Chapter 538: Chapter 216: Serum

On the first floor of the Defense Army 101 General Hospital.

”How is it? What is the current condition of the patient?”

”The condition has stabilized. This time we can confirm that the patient is out of danger. The specific effects will require long-term observation, but it can be confirmed that the mamba snake serum has an excellent effect on mamba snake bites.”

”That’s great, this indicates that the snake venom serum can indeed be incorporated into the latest medical research findings.”

Soon, this joy was also known to Ernst upstairs.

”Your Highness, this is Prince Friedrich’s physical examination report. The prince is in good health and has no problems.”

”And the clinical results of the snake venom serum have just come out as well. It has been proven that the snake venom serum has an excellent effect on poisonous snake bites.”

Hearing that the snake venom serum research was completed, Ernst became interested and said to his wife, ”Would you like to accompany me to take a look?”

Karina readily agreed.

Soon, the news of the Crown Prince and Princess coming to inspect arrived, and the guards prepared in advance to prevent any accidents.

The Ernst couple arrived on the first floor and, under the guidance of the medical staff, met the researchers from the East Africa Snake Venom Research Institute.

A researcher took a bottle of the agent from a small cabinet and handed it to Ernst to inspect.

”Is this the snake venom serum?”

Ernst carefully examined the small sealed vial, which contained a powder-like substance inside.

”Yes, Your Highness. Based on the ideas you provided years ago, after years of cultivation, we finally purified a relatively reliable snake venom serum, which has an excellent effect on mamba snakes.”

”However, the snake venom serum also has many drawbacks. The biggest problem is that it’s difficult to store; preserving the snake venom serum requires a refrigerator, and cities with such conditions are very rare. Moreover, the serum is only effective against mamba snake bites, and for other snake venom, it only provides relief or is ineffective.”

Refrigerators are indeed hard to come by, and only well-funded places like the Defense Army 101 General Hospital can afford them.

Linde, the manager of Heixinggen Electric Company, was one of the inventors of the refrigerator in a past life, having invented the first household electric refrigerator in 1879. This year is precisely 1879, and with financial support, Linde actually completed all refrigerator experiments as early as 1875.

So Ernst told the research personnel at the Snake Venom Research Institute, ”Don’t worry about storing the snake venom serum. Heixinggen Electric Company has already made a technological breakthrough in this area. In the future, refrigerators will become prevalent in East Africa. Now, they are quite expensive and uncommon, but in two to three years, all the large hospitals in East Africa should be able to use them.”

Karina shot Ernst a glance; she was quite familiar with refrigerators since Qivite Palace was equipped with them.

Having experienced life in the 21st century, Ernst naturally had fond memories of many household appliances, so Qivite Palace was the palace with the most extensive use of electrical appliances in the world.

And in the relatively hot climate of East Africa, refrigerators, electric fans, and other new inventions are naturally indispensable. In fact, air conditioning is also being researched.

So Karina had seen many actual household appliances, hence she had no doubts about Ernst’s words. As the most advanced technological products, the wealthy had been using them for a while.

Upon hearing Ernst’s assurance, the research personnel at the Snake Venom Research Institute naturally believed him, but they also asked, ”Your Highness, if so, can our Snake Venom Research Institute also apply for a few units?”

Ernst: ”Yes, you can write a report to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce when the time comes, and I will approve it.”

The greatest obstacle to the widespread use of refrigerators is electricity supply. As the capital, First Town certainly has no problem, and other large cities in East Africa can also use it. However, areas without electricity may have to rely on generators.

Ernst continued, ”You should not slack off; besides the mamba snake, there are other venomous snakes in East Africa. The research on their venom and serum should also be expedited. Not only in East Africa, but research can also be conducted starting with the snake species in the Lan Fang Overseas Province and Zhuhai Trade Region.”

”Of course, you don’t have to worry about funding; overseas caravans will provide you with venomous snake samples.”

Ernst is quite willing to invest in this research area, as it requires a significant investment but also offers a quick return. In this era, being bitten by a poisonous snake is almost a matter of life and death, so once the anti-venom serum is developed, it will definitely be a huge market.

Naturally, with the principle of prioritizing good things for one’s own people, Ernst first thought of the local East Africa, Lan Fang Overseas Province, and Zhuhai Trade Region.

These three places are also areas with a high incidence of venomous snake bites. Places like the Alaska Royal Territory and Huaihai Economic Zone are not currently within Ernst’s consideration, but later, if a separate enterprise is established, they will definitely open up to the European and American markets.

At the same time, considering the contributions of the Snake Venom Research Institute, Ernst thought that East Africa might also establish a medical award of some kind.

This point is quite promising, since East Africa has long been trying to attract advanced talents, but the results are not noticeable. If some scientific awards are set up in East Africa, it would also help promote East Africa’s preferential treatment of scientific talents in relevant scientific circles.

For instance, the famous German medical scientist Rudolph Virchow, whom Ernst is quite envious of. He is a renowned global expert in cell biology and has great research on leukemia and bone tumors, being one of the founders of modern pathology. The most important thing is that this national treasure-level figure is still alive. Rudolph Virchow was born in 1821 and historically lived until 1902.

Getting him from Germany would certainly be impossible, but if he could come to East Africa for a few days and give a few lectures, Ernst would feel that East Africa has made a great gain.

Thinking of this, Ernst believed that setting up a medical award in East Africa had great potential, so he told the research personnel at the Snake Venom Research Institute, ”I plan to establish an award in East Africa for those who have contributed to world medicine. I expect it to take place early next year, and by that time, you will surely be award winners. Remember to participate.”

Upon hearing this, the research personnel at the Snake Venom Research Institute all smiled with joy, feeling that their efforts had been recognized.

Why choose the beginning of the year? That’s because East Africa is about to celebrate the New Year, and at the end of the year, East Africa has an extended one-month holiday. Considering East Africa’s unique national conditions, Christmas and the Chinese New Year are celebrated together. With these two important holidays combined, there’s this long holiday. Of course, not everyone gets this treatment, but it definitely serves as a benefit for research personnel.

Currently, the research personnel at the East Africa Snake Venom Research Institute are already pre-selected award winners. This is not some insider deal but rather the fact that the only medical achievement East Africa can showcase is the snake venom serum, with no competitors, allowing for pre-selection without controversy.

Moreover, the research on snake venom serum is extremely important for East Africa, a tropical country, as venomous snake bites have long been one of the leading causes of unnatural death for East Africans.

In terms of contribution and impact on human society, as well as the economic value it represents, winning an award is well-deserved.

If there were any Nobel Prize in Physiology in this era, Ernst believed that the snake venom serum research would be a strong contender. It’s just that Nobel is currently alive and probably has no time to establish any scientific awards.
