High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 740: Chapter 88 Big Snow_1

When the heavy snow comes, it’s a flurry of rain and snow.

The weekend of the fourteenth week happens to be the day of ”Big Snow,” one of the twenty-four solar terms.

Since last night, the weather on Buji Island has seemed a bit gloomy, and the drifting winds felt rather solemn. At lunchtime, the young cost student who had just taken a nap opened the curtains to find the sky still a dull grey. The sun seemed to have lost its colour and warmth, leaving behind only icy light, silently pouring down upon this world amidst the howling wind.

The dormitory is very quiet.

The beds of Fatty and Xiao Xiao are empty, and there is nobody at the desk. I suppose one must have gone to the library, and the other to the campus newspaper’s editorial room. The curtains over Dylan’s bed are tightly closed, and through the gaps in the curtains, one can vaguely see the shadow of a large black coffin - I wonder if Mister Wolfman is still napping.

Of course, these have nothing to do with Zheng Qing; he is just a wizard who just woke up and wants to go to the bathroom.

The sound of the curtains being drawn woke the other guests in the dormitory -- Fatty Cat was curled up on Fatty’s pillow, its round body bunched up into a ball, head buried in the crook of its forelegs. On hearing the sound, it just twitched its ears without even bothering to open its eyes. The elves that the cost student raised, on the other hand, perked up, left the warm belly of the Fatty Cat, flapped their wings, and scattered.

In the blink of an eye, they were carrying toothpaste, a water cup, cold and hot water kettles, warm towels, and cleaned robes. In a lined formation, they floated obediently in front of Zheng Qing, ready to help him get out of bed.

”You guys go back to sleep, I can handle this myself.” The young cost student mumbled vaguely, but his voice was somewhat helpless. Ever since he helped these little elves partially break free from their constraints, they had switched their services to him, and over time, they’ve become more and more spirited.

In the past, without anyone instructing them, these little creatures would only hang dumbly on Zheng Qing’s curtain, never daring to step out of the dormitory. Even when frightened, they would hide their heads with their wings and tremble in secret.

Now, in their spare time, they will sneak out to the balcony, pick a few fresh flowers from the flower bed and bring them back to put in the vase of dormitory 403, throwing away the wilted bouquets from before. When they are tired, they will find comfortable places to have a good sleep, such as the paper houses given by the witches of Astronomy Class 08-1, Fatty Cat’s belly, and Zheng Qing’s quilt. In comparison, the soft and warm belly of the Fatty Cat is their favorite bed.

In addition, the servants’ abilities of the elves had greatly improved. Initially, they could only help Zheng Qing with clothes, shoes, socks, organize the bed, and desk. Now, they can actively boil hot water, brew tea, grind ink, spread paper, even the tasks of clothing cleaning and arrangement are done in an orderly manner.

Entirely without any instruction from Zheng Qing, they do everything even better than the professional servants of the wizard families.

If one day, they hold a quill and helped Zheng Qing finish homework or even lab reports assigned by the professors meticulously, he won’t be surprised - he might even look forward to it.

Such changes made Zheng Qing both gratified and uneasy.

What made him gratified was that these little elves seemed to have gotten over the shadow of their former owner’s death and resumed their lives; what made him uneasy was that he felt it was inappropriate for the little elves to serve him like this.

He can’t pinpoint exactly where the impropriety lies.

Perhaps it was because he felt that he was just a student with no foundation and should not enjoy such services; perhaps it was because he always felt that the elves are also intelligent creatures and there was no reason for them to do these trivial chores; maybe it was just because he never paid these little elves any wages.

Anyway, he feels he can’t in good conscience accept the elves’ meticulous care.

Regarding this issue, during a visit to the Abnormal Life Research Institute to meet Doctor Du Zemu, the young cost student had a thorough discussion with the doctor.

The doctor disdained his carefulness and consideration:

”Life in the world must have its own meaning. If they think it’s good to do so, then it is good. If you arbitrarily interfere with their choices, what difference does it make with what you oppose?”

”As for the wages you mentioned, I think that helping them extend their lives is more valuable than any bronze or jade coins.”

”After all, in this world, time is a stronger currency than money and school credits.”

”Every minute and second of their existence is what you paid for... and you’re just borrowing part of their time. It’s fair, reasonable.”

”Remember, life is precious; you can’t just add a second or subtract a second casually.”

The doctor’s reasoning left Zheng Qing speechless and eventually made him slowly start to accept the changes of the elves. Compared to him, the other wizards in Dormitory 403 accepted the changes much quicker- whether it was the always ready hot water, the consistently cleaned and neat desks, the cleaned clothes, or the always fresh flower arrangement, all were received to great satisfaction by the young wizards.

The thoughts flashed through his mind.

Zheng Qing took the water cup, gargled with warm water, then took the toothbrush. While brushing his teeth, he slipped on his slippers, squinted his hazy eyes, and wriggled his way to the balcony.

There are many small and dense runes engraved on the door frame between the balcony and the dormitory, offering many effects such as warmth, sound insulation, and wind protection.

Crossing the door frame, a cold wind hit him squarely, and he immediately woke up a lot. The young cost student couldn’t help but shiver and bit hard into the toothbrush that had been vigorously working in his mouth.

”Open your mouth, you idiot!” The little person carved on the toothbrush handle stood with his hands on his hips, glaring angrily at the young wizard and shouting, ”I have never seen someone as hard to serve as you... you bite the brush, how can I work!”

Zheng Qing sniffed and immediately opened his mouth again.

”So cold!” He exclaimed, ”It’s really snowing today!”

Today is the day of Big Snow, of course he knows it. Yesterday, he even discussed with several hunters of the Absolution Hunting Team about how the school’s department that manages the weather is so relentless. He even knew that a broker named Lǜèyǎnér was selling betting tickets a few days ago whether it would snow today and if it does how much snow there would be.

”Shut up! Don’t talk! You licked off the toothpaste foam on the brush with your tongue!”
