High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 207: Chapter 131: Day Has Its Thoughts_1

The lakeside of Lin Zhong Lake was unusually tranquil at night.

No insects flew, no birds sang, no fish swam.

The ghastly moonlight reflected on the black glassy lake, its twinkling shimmer like fragments of a shattered mirror, So disorienting to look at.

Zheng Qing sat blankly by the lake, staring at its fragmented surface, pondering why he was there.

Class? No, it was already night, no classes were scheduled.

Self-study? Also incorrect, even across a small square, Zheng Qing could see that the Book Mountain Library not far away was pitch black, not a single light, let alone self-study.

A date? But with whom?

Before he could figure it out, a hand patted his shoulder.

”You’re here!” a familiar voice echoed by his ear, followed by a series of silver-bell-like laughter.

Zheng Qing turned his head sharply. All he could see was a graceful figure melting away into the thick fog by the lake.

”Wait,” he yelled, chasing after it.

After a few quick steps, he caught up with her in the dense fog. Zheng Qing domineeringly grabbed the figure and pinned her against the rugged bark of a camphor tree.

Her long eyelashes trembled intensively, then slowly drooped.

A blush spread across her fair cheeks.

The girl didn’t resist, but her breath became slightly ragged.

”What am I doing?” As Zheng Qing tried to kiss her, this thought suddenly surfaced in his mind: ”Who is she?”

Shaking his head forcefully, the girl’s face in front of him started flickering rapidly.

So familiar, yet so unfamiliar.

Her eyes seemed very big and beautiful, yet they seemed to merely be dark and bright.

Her lips were one moment a beautiful, lush rose color, and the next moment tightly pursed as if suppressing something.

Her hairstyle was extraordinarily peculiar.

The left side was long, straight, black hair, carrying a faint jasmine scent; the right side was a curly chestnut color, its sway hinted at a seductive aroma.

”What’s that!” The girl suddenly screamed, pointing behind him.

Zheng Qing turned to look.

The fragmented surface of the lake had completely crumbled, revealing a fierce fish head.

The fish head was several tens of meters high, its dull round eyes stared fixedly at the young man and woman not far from the shore.

”... Hiss ... Eat ...”

A hoarse voice was spat from the fish’s mouth.

Inch by inch, the fish head moved towards the shore, revealing sharp gills on its head, shoulder, and neck, the muscular arms, and an abdomen covered by dark, green-black scale armor.

”... Hiss ... Tear ...”

A stench hit them face on as the fish head steadily drew closer, suffocatingly odious.

”It’s the Fishman King, run!” Zheng Qing turned around and pushed hard.

The girl immediately disappeared into the thick fog.

”The north is chilly! No, it’s the north wind cold! Not right, not right!” Zheng Qing flipped frantically through his law book, constantly yelling various spells, finally finding the required incantation in an insignificant corner.

”The North Wind is Chilly!” He stood up, throwing the law book hard at the Fishman.

A massive light pierced the solemn night sky, slamming into the Fishman, as distant thunder rumbled.

”Roar!!!” The Fishman roared in anger, retreating swiftly deep into the lake until it could no longer be seen.

The surface of the lake calmed back into its fragmented tranquillity.

The fog once again concealed everything.

The struggle from moments ago vanished without a trace, as if it were merely an illusion.

”Meow...” A kitten’s timid voice echoed from deep within the fog.

Zheng Qing hesitated before following the sound.

On a man-made mountain stone by the lake, a small white short-haired kitten was chasing a dancing black butterfly. Its chubby little fur paws sparkled with tempting soft light under the moonlight. With its playful leaps and bounds, it looked adorably naïve.

”You can’t catch it!” He shouted, trying to prevent what was about to happen.

”Uh-oh, we’re in trouble.” A raspy yet pleasant voice rang in his ear. A graceful figure was rising from the lake, the fog around her acting like thin veil covering her, making it impossible to see her true face.

There was a tremendous force pushing Zheng Qing from behind, throwing him into the lake.

Thick, sticky, red liquid surged in from all directions, pouring into his open mouth, his nose, his ears.

Zheng Qing waved his arms, struggling as he sank deeper into the lake.

Just before he disappeared under the water, he heard the last sentence:

”Maybe cuteness is a type of original sin?”

”Thud!” Accompanied by a scream, Zheng Qing tumbled out from behind the curtain and fell face-first onto the carpet.

”Hehe...” The elves quickly woke up, their wings flapping as they worriedly watched the young witch mumbling and dragging himself back to his bed.

On the windowsill, Tuan Tuan, who had been dozing off with his eyes half closed, twitched his whiskers lightly and then insolently resumed his snoring.

The night was deep.

There were storm clouds filling the sky outside the window, not a trace of moonlight could be seen.

...

Saturday morning.

When Xiao Xiao once again called out to Zheng Qing for morning exercises, the normally active scholarship student had been missing for a while.

It wasn’t until Xiao Xiao drove those elves back under the curtains that Zheng Qing, in low spirits, crawled out of his six-pillar bed.

”Not planning on exercising this morning?” Xiao Xiao asked, cinching his belt. He turned to look at Zheng Qing and startled by his appearance, he blurted out, ”What on earth happened!”

Xiao Xiao’s voice had risen considerably, clearly ignoring the fact that the other figures in the dormitory were still asleep.

”Meow!” Tuan Tuan let out a dissatisfied cry and, wriggling his fat body, burrowed deeper into Xin Fat Man’s bed.

The fat man grumbled a couple of times and continued playing chess with the Duke of Zhou in his dreams.

In mid-air, the startled elves hiding behind Zheng Qing’s neck squeaked in fright.

Xiao Xiao bobbed his head apologetically at them and smiled.

”What happened?” He pushed his glasses up and lowered his voice to ask again, ”Your eyes look like someone’s beat them to a pulp.”

Zheng Qing squinted and peered into the mirror.

Indeed, his already small eyes were now almost reduced to a slit. His puffy eye bags looked like they had been shot with a few liters of ink, or perhaps stung by a hive of horseflies.

”Had a nightmare.” Zheng Qing murmured, massaging his sore shoulders and simply replied, ”I kept waking up last night... Seems like I can’t sleep peacefully anymore.”

”A nightmare?” Xiao Xiao muttered while pushing Zheng Qing towards the door, ”Even in the University, you can have nightmares? How disliked must you be.”

”What do you mean?” Although Zheng Qing was a little groggy, he hadn’t forgotten his sleeve buttons. He instructed an elf to fly back to the dorm to retrieve them.

”What kind of nightmare did you have?” Instead of answering Zheng Qing’s question, Xiao Xiao questioned further.

Zheng Qing opened the door of the dormitory and walked out into First University at dawn.

”I forgot.” He rubbed his face vigorously, taking several deep breaths.

The campus in the early morning was very fresh.

The smell of earth and grass mixed with the morning dew rose into the air and entered Zheng Qing’s lungs.

It was a timeless antidote to drowsiness.

Zheng Qing’s spirit immediately lifted.

”As soon as I fell asleep, I started having nightmares, and as soon as I woke up, I forgot them. I could still recall a few fragments just after waking up, but as soon as I breathed in the fresh air outside, I totally forgot about them.” As he walked, he complained, ”A perfect nightmare sequence.”

”It’s indeed a perfect nightmare sequence.” Xiao Xiao nodded thoughtfully.
