My Living Shadow System Devours To Make Me Stronger

Damon’s expression tightened slightly as the memory passed through him.

He understood it now.

The Unknown God did not want blind faith.

He wanted agreement.

He wanted someone to stand in front of truth and not deny it.

But also not submit to it.

That was the contradiction.

That was the trap.

Damon’s lips curved slightly, not into a smile, but something closer to disbelief.

“He may be correct,” he whispered to himself, “but that doesn’t mean he is right.”

The air around them felt heavier for a moment.

Ashcroft trembled slightly where he knelt, as if realizing something had shifted.

Doom remained still.

Watching.

Then time resumed.

Damon let out a short, breathless laugh, almost disbelieving that he was still standing here.

He lifted his hand slightly, palm open, as if testing whether reality would collapse around it.

“Truly…” he began, then stopped.

He did not finish.

Something in him warned him that continuing that thought might be dangerous in a way that had nothing to do with death.

Ashcroft remained fully bowed now, forehead nearly touching the ground.

Even Lilith did not speak.

Then Doom spoke.

Her voice did not come from one direction.

It came from everywhere at once.

“Interesting.”

The word alone made the space feel smaller.

Ashcroft flinched slightly at it.

Damon, however, did not lower his gaze.

He simply watched her.

Doom tilted her head slightly.

The motion felt almost human.

Almost wrong.

“I have not seen defiance like this in a long time,” she said.

Then, unexpectedly, she smiled.

Not warm.

Not kind.

Curious.

She turned slightly, as if speaking to someone else that only she could see.

“I hope he appreciates my effort.”

Ashcroft’s mind stuttered at that.

He did not understand who she was referring to.

But Damon did not ask.

Not yet.

Damon felt time begin to move again, and the first thing that came back was laughter.

It burst out of him suddenly, sharp and uncontrolled, as his shoulders lifted and dropped once in a brief shake. He tilted his head back slightly, breathing through it, as if he had just stepped out of something far too heavy to carry.

He laughed in the face of Doom.

Not out of confidence.

Out of survival.

Out of disbelief that he was still standing after facing something that should not have been survived.

His gaze flickered briefly across the space where Doom had been, then he muttered under his breath, the smile still half-formed on his face.

“Truly… she was…”

His voice trailed off.

His lips stopped moving mid-thought.

His jaw tightened slightly.

His eyes narrowed as if something inside him had warned him not to continue that sentence.

So he didn’t.

He let the thought die unfinished.

The silence that followed felt heavier than the laughter.

Damon’s expression slowly shifted as the realization settled in.

The actual failure condition was not death.

Their bodies had already died more than once.

Burned, erased, corrupted, rewritten.

None of it mattered.

The real failure condition was something else entirely.

Agreement.

Damon slowly lowered his head, eyes unfocused for a moment as the idea formed fully.

Not worshipping Unknown.

Not serving him.

Agreeing with him.

The moment a person accepted the conclusion as truth.

The moment they stopped resisting and thought:

’Existence is a mistake.’

That was the end.

That was the loss.

Damon exhaled slowly through his nose.

“Son of a bitch…”

The words came out low, almost tired, like someone acknowledging a trap they had only barely avoided stepping into completely.

His fingers curled once at his side, then relaxed.

Now he understood.

Unknown was not simply judging them.

He was pushing them toward agreement.

Not through force.

Through evidence.

Through suffering.

Through truth stripped bare until only one conclusion remained if you let it.

Damon lifted his gaze again slightly, eyes sharper now.

Which meant the trial was never about survival.

It was about conclusion.

Ashcroft remained on his knees nearby, one hand still braced against the ground. His head was lowered, horns angled forward, his breathing uneven. His posture wasn’t forced anymore, but it had not fully recovered either, like his body was still deciding whether it was safe to move.

Damon spoke again, voice steadier now.

“He doesn’t want worship,” he said quietly.

His eyes narrowed slightly as he stared at the space where Doom had been.

“He doesn’t want loyalty.”

A pause.

“He wants agreement.”

That word carried more weight than the rest.

Ashcroft’s head lifted slightly at that, expression tightening as he listened.

Damon continued, almost speaking to himself now.

“If you agree with him…” his hand flexed slightly, fingers opening and closing once. “If you accept that existence itself is wrong…”

He stopped there for a moment, letting the idea settle.

Then he let out a short breath.

“You lose.”

Ashcroft made a low sound in his throat, not quite a growl, not quite agreement, but something strained.

Damon ignored it.

Because the pattern was already clear in his mind.

Every vision.

Every collapse.

Every impossible suffering.

It was all leading to the same edge.

Not defeat through strength.

Defeat through acceptance.

Damon’s lips curled faintly, not in humor, but in bitter recognition.

“That bastard…”

Ashcroft shifted slightly behind him, still on his knees, shoulders tense, but listening.

Damon finally straightened fully, rolling his shoulders back once as if physically resetting himself.

Then he spoke again, more casually, as if testing whether reality still responded normally.

“You… seem to be in a better mood than I thought,” he said, glancing upward toward Doom’s presence. “I mean, we’re still alive.”

Ashcroft’s eyes snapped toward him immediately, sharp with disbelief at the timing.

Damon didn’t stop.

He raised one hand slightly, palm open, gesturing toward the overwhelming presence as if commenting on something inconvenient rather than divine.

“You’re glowing,” he added, squinting faintly. “And I don’t mean in a comforting way. More like reality is being crushed under pressure.”

Behind him, Lilith’s body jolted slightly, as if she had just remembered fear again.

The atmosphere shifted.

A distant pressure rolled through the space, heavy enough that Ashcroft instinctively lowered his head further.

Then Doom changed.

Not gone.

Not vanished.

Condensed.

Her vast presence folded inward, shrinking from something incomprehensible into something that could be seen directly.

But the weight of her existence did not lessen.

Only became focused.

Damon did not step back.

He simply held his ground, eyes fixed forward.

“You are interesting,” Doom said.

Ashcroft’s eyes widened immediately at the direct address.

That was not judgment.

Not punishment.

Attention.

Doom’s gaze lingered on Damon, slow and deliberate, as if evaluating something that had behaved in an unexpected way.

“Your impudence is amusing,” she continued. “I have not seen anyone so foolishly bold in eons.”

Then she smiled.

That single expression made Ashcroft stiffen completely.

Not because it was gentle.

But because it was unexpected.

Doom turned slightly, her expression shifting as if she was addressing someone not present.

“You can tell…” she said softly.

A pause.

“I certainly hope he appreciates my effort.”

Ashcroft’s brow furrowed deeply, confusion tightening his expression.

“He?”

He did not mean to speak aloud.

But the word slipped out anyway.

The silence that followed was heavier than anything before it.
