I Can Devour Spirits

Chapter 710: Chapter 435: People Change, Old Friends Remain

Yunfu Peak, inside the pavilion.

In Duan Rong’s room.

The table is filled with dishes and wine cups, and he sits opposite Liu Shushan.

Liu Shushan is presently bowing his head and eating heartily, devouring without lifting his head, like an old sow buried in a feeding trough.

Duan Rong is already full, watching Liu Shushan eat, he smiles faintly, and starts to pour himself wine.

Duan Rong drinks down a cup of yellow wine, shaking his head slightly, and sighs: “Take it easy, no one’s going to fight you for it!”

“Mmm mmm…” Liu Shushan, while munching on a chicken leg, is scooping braised pork into his bowl, completely unconcerned with appearances.

Duan Rong can understand Liu Shushan; after all, Liu Shushan has been confined in the Tower Forest for over half a year, while he stayed there only one night.

Liu Shushan has always been steady; seeing him eat like this, we can imagine the hardship in the Tower Forest.

Just half a year turns into this, if confined in the Tower Forest for two to three years, wouldn’t it drive someone insane?

With these thoughts, Duan Rong can’t help but think of Xiao Yu.

His heart heavy, he starts drinking cup after cup of yellow wine.

Duan Rong was drinking when Liu Shushan suddenly pressed his hand, burping, he smiled with an oily mouth: “Brother Duan, that’s no way to drink, not even eating a bite?”

Duan Rong chuckled, saying: “Where’s the food? The plates are all empty, thanks to you!”

Liu Shushan laughed along with him; indeed, all the dishes on the table had been swept clean by him. He smiled with a touch of awkwardness, saying: “I’ve craved too long, couldn’t help myself. Hope I didn’t make a fool of myself in front of Brother Duan. But we still have wine here. Come, Brother Duan, I toast to you.”

They clinked cups, and drank.

Seeing Duan Rong’s demeanor, Liu Shushan’s expression changed, saying: “Brother Duan, it seems like you have something on your mind.”

Duan Rong sighed deeply, saying: “Shushan, you’ve stayed in the Tower Forest for over half a year, you surely know well by now. Any inner sect disciple entering the Tower Forest, unless achieving True Qi Realm Great Perfection, will never leave the Tower Forest. It’s a sect ironclad rule.”

Hearing this, Liu Shushan’s eyes also darkened suddenly, his voice somber: “In the half year inside the Tower Forest, seven or eight corpses were carried out and buried on Iron Peak Mountain. The sect built the Tower Forest, assisting breakthroughs, yet it’s too cruel.”

“Seven or eight corpses…” Duan Rong’s expression was mournful as he drank another cup of wine, unsure how long Xiao Yu could hold out. Two years? Three years? Or five years?

Liu Shushan glanced at Duan Rong and said: “Brother Duan, you haven’t stayed inside. You don’t know. It’s too hard to endure.”

Liu Shushan spoke, a fleeting trace of fear flashed in his eyes.

Duan Rong’s voice trembled slightly as he asked: “How are they doing?”

Liu Shushan replied: “Kankan and Shen Mizhi are doing well, both have broken through to True Qi Realm Third Level, especially Kankan, who is probably close to breaking through the Fourth Level. However, achieving Great Perfection after breaking through the Fourth Level is the hardest.”

Duan Rong nodded and asked: “And Xiao Yu?”

“This…” Liu Shushan hesitated, looking at Duan Rong, seemingly reluctant to speak.

The more Liu Shushan hesitated, the more Duan Rong’s heart ached as if stabbed by needles. “It’s okay, Shushan, just tell me straight. I’ve already heard some from Tutor Yao.”

Liu Shushan said: “Actually, the day I left the tower, Xiao Yu asked me to bring you a message.”

Duan Rong, hearing this, immediately opened his eyes wide and asked: “What message?”

Liu Shushan said: “She said she has a premonition that she may never leave the Tower Forest in this life. Someday she might be buried on Iron Peak Mountain. She said… to forget her… also to… treat Xiaoqi well…”

Upon hearing these words, Duan Rong crushed the wine cup in his hand, and at that moment, his eyes revealed a piercing coldness!

After a while, Duan Rong declared: “It’s just a Tower Forest, right? If worse comes to worst, I’ll just rescue her!”

Liu Shushan immediately made a gesture for silence, looking towards the door before saying: “Brother Duan, do not speak recklessly! This is Taiyi Sect! If you really dare to do such a thing, would the Ministry of Rites Decision Department not pursue you?”

Duan Rong realized the topic was inappropriate for further discussion, so he said no more.

The two chatted about random things until evening, when Liu Shushan returned to the training camp on Iron Peak Mountain. After all, in two days, he was to go to Cuiwei Peak to pay respects to the ancestors in Taiyi Pavilion.

After Liu Shushan’s departure, Duan Rong sat alone, trying to pour more wine, but found the wine jug was empty. He summoned an attendant, who brought him another jar of wine.

Duan Rong hugged the jar, drinking until it was empty, then staggered to lie on the bed to sleep.

Upon waking, it was early morning on the second day, and after a hangover, Duan Rong felt a splitting headache.

However, between being drunk and sober, he had found his answer concerning Xiao Yu.

He absolutely could not give up on Xiao Yu!

What kind of man would watch his wife trapped in the Tower Forest, turned to bones, and still have the face to live in this world?

However, this matter couldn’t be done hastily; he also had to consider the consequences!

Firstly, the defense around and inside the Tower Forest was tight, yet based on the attack received at the edge of the mountain slope’s forest yesterday, the martial artists guarding the Tower Forest were likely all Qi Vortex Realm.

Firstly, regarding cultivation, he must ensure he can extract Xiao Yu from the Tower Forest.

As Duan Rong considered this, his expression suddenly changed.

He thought of one thing, regarding the defensive forces around and inside the Tower Forest, perhaps the Internal History Department would have detailed records. If he could see those records, he’d know himself and the enemy. This would greatly increase the chances of success.
