Chapter 60

There was no time to feel the pain pressing on my abdomen.

“Then, shall we take a look at that proud face of yours?”

I fixed my gaze on the spot where the altar had been, beyond Park Oseok’s sinister expression.

…Where on earth is the shard?

Until a moment ago, Park Oseok had moved cautiously around the altar.

Therefore, I thought it was highly likely that the shard would be there, but it was just bare ground, not even a crumb of the shard.

Could there have been a variable due to the intervention rate?

No, the fact that this old cathedral was intact even after a fierce battle meant there was almost no room for the avid reader’s intervention.

Most importantly, Park Oseok had called my attempt “a shame.”

That meant I was very close to the shard.

“…”

I lifted my head slightly.

My gaze was directed exactly above the altar’s location.

That is, the ceiling.

The ceiling was high, as befitting a cathedral, but an unnaturally cracked groove caught my eye in that position.

A foreign crack that could be clearly distinguished even without the Demonic Eye, using only natural eyesight in this darkness…

It was clearly the hiding place of the shard.

Upon discovering it, I rolled my eyes, searching for the Mist-Clearing Sword.

At the same time, Park Oseok bent down and reached out his arm to remove my cloak, and I spotted the pure white sword lying on the floor a little distance away.

The Mist-Clearing Sword, lying ownerless on the floor.

But my gaze was fixed on Do Minyeong, who was slumped near the Mist-Clearing Sword.

Because she was watching the situation with wide, angry eyes.

Since when had she been watching?

Whatever else, it was certain that she was aware of the situation.

Do Minyeong stealthily approaching the Mist-Clearing Sword was proof of that.

She had noticed that the Mist-Clearing Sword was Park Oseok’s weakness.

As soon as she gripped the Mist-Clearing Sword, she rushed towards Park Oseok’s back.

Feeling her movement, Park Oseok left me and dashed to meet her.

“Damn it!”

An overwhelming speed incomparable to Do Minyeong’s.

Even though she held the Mist-Clearing Sword, it was clear that she would be struck before the sword could be swung.

I urgently shouted.

“Stab the groove in the ceiling above the altar!”

Do Minyeong understood my words and ran towards the altar.

Park Oseok also changed direction and instantly reached Do Minyeong’s face, unleashing a thick punch.

“...!”

But before his attack, I managed to bind his shadow.

“M-my body!”

Mana poured out of my body, disappearing.

Still, maintaining the Bind was a little easier than at the entrance ceremony.

If Park Oseok had directly used the shard, I would have already lost consciousness.

Do Minyeong gracefully dodged the punch that stopped right in front of her and immediately jumped, stepping on the altar.

She was aiming for the unnaturally cracked groove.

Do Minyeong, who maintained her composure until her head touched the ceiling, confidently aimed the tip of her sword when she found the groove, and mercilessly pierced the ceiling.

WHOOSH—!

At that moment, an indescribable wave of mana surged several times.

Simultaneously, Park Oseok’s death agony echoed throughout the cathedral.

Demonic Being Lee Gangju entered Hero Prep with light steps.

He moved cautiously, mindful of the drone blind spots as he had learned while working as an instructor here, and eventually stepped into an outdoor training ground.

‘It should be around here…’

He was looking for a secret passage leading underground.

The passage connected to Hero Prep’s underground training ground, and using the underground training ground, one could easily move to where the cadets’ dormitories were located.

In fact, the underground training ground was an ideal shortcut for infiltration, as long as its internal system wasn’t activated.

As for the security at the entrance and exit, he could just use the access card he had taken from a human who once worked as a Hero Prep Guard.

‘I wonder how he’s doing, by the way.’

The person Lee Gangju was concerned about was Park Oseok.

While formulating this plan, Lee Gangju had given Park Oseok an opportunity for revenge, but in truth, he was merely a decoy for his own purposes from the start.

He would have done his part as long as he drew Dispel’s attention in any way.

If he could also dispose of the bothersome Lee Eunho, it would be even better.

Of course, he wasn’t expecting much.

‘Still, human desire can sometimes lead to unexpected results.’

Soon, Lee Gangju found a secret passage that looked like the entrance to an underground bunker.

It was covered in overgrown bushes, likely because it wasn’t frequently used, and its crude seams were covered in moss and rust.

Lee Gangju wiped away the foreign matter from the handle with his foot, then pulled the handle with both hands.

But it only made a CLUNK sound, and the door showed no sign of opening.

“...Something’s strange.”

A sudden wave of uneasiness.

Soon, he sensed someone’s presence, and Lee Gangju turned his head towards a man approaching nearby.

“Phew, of all people… I thought it was going too smoothly.”

The person he least wanted to encounter, Principal Kim Shinwoo of Hero Prep, appeared as if he had been waiting.

Lee Gangju chuckled bitterly and acknowledged him.

“Long time no see, really.”

“…We’re not in a position to exchange greetings.”

“Are you drawing a line? No matter how much of a love-hate relationship it is, that’s too cold-hearted, isn’t it?”

Instead of answering, Kim Shinwoo drew his long sword.

Accordingly, Lee Gangju stepped a few paces back from the passage door and said.

“I heard you suffered quite a severe injury in the Labyrinth? But you look perfectly fine.”

“…”

“I’ve always felt it, but both the older and younger brother seem to have very tenacious lifelines.”

Kim Shinwoo nodded with a strange expression.

“Interesting. There aren’t many who know about my injury.”

“Well… secrets in this business can’t be kept.”

“No, there’s a way to keep them. …Just kill everyone who knows the secret.”

Lee Gangju subtly curled the corners of his mouth.

“You’re a truly easy human to understand. But I like clarity, even if it’s troublesome.”

With those words, Lee Gangju released his mana.

Simultaneously, a low gust of wind arose around them, where there had been none, and Lee Gangju’s body began to turn black.

“That you came first and waited for me means you knew what I was after from the start.”

The black coloring Lee Gangju’s body stopped after covering half of his physique, and the wind subsided as if a lie when a single wing sprouted from his back.

“Well, it’s good that I don’t have to bother hiding.”

“…”

Kim Shinwoo tightly held his sword towards his opponent.

A perfect stance, without the slightest opening.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Are you pretending not to know, even now? …Khu-hut, still repulsive brothers, aren’t you?”

“…”

“Then I’ll speak plainly.”

Lee Gangju distorted his blackened face.

Then his grotesque voice reverberated, tapping at the surroundings as if echoing through the space.

“…Where is the Witch?”

***

Park Oseok screamed and collapsed as the shard was destroyed, and his breathing quickly ceased.

His body had withered and twisted, devoid of any moisture, and his face was so contorted that his expression was indiscernible.

Was he in pain, or was he joyous at being freed from the shard’s shackles…?

Perhaps he only felt regret that he couldn’t kill Lee Eunho.

“Th-there…!”

Do Minyeong spoke to me.

However, I had already retrieved the Mist-Clearing Sword from the ceiling and reached the entrance in one breath.

I didn’t have the leisure to chat idly with her.

Dispel would soon storm the cathedral, and now that the shard was destroyed, the victims would gradually regain consciousness.

The fact that the Phantom Thief was involved in this incident was enough with Do Minyeong’s testimony alone.

Originally, if I had defeated Park Oseok by myself, I had intended to deliberately wake Do Minyeong and inform her of the inside story of the incident.

My appearance as the Phantom Thief was to act as an adhesive for this episode.

“Thank you…”

Thank you, huh…

It was rather I who should express gratitude.

Truthfully, if Do Minyeong hadn’t regained consciousness, I would have been helplessly trapped.

Well, there was always the option of using Remake Coins if push came to shove.

Anyway, I left the cathedral with Do Minyeong’s thanks.

The academy was already blaring its internal alarm.

It must have been due to the waves of mana that had surged several times a moment ago.

I quickly exited the premises.

I moved, intentionally getting caught on closed-circuit cameras, and after running through the narrow alleyways of the 4th Scholastic District, I found a place where I could remove my cloak.

This was a typical back alley where successful students might secretly smoke cigarettes, and faint wall-mounted lights illuminating the ground dotted the area here and there.

“Haa… I need a healing potion quickly…”

The aftereffects of the recent battle and binding Park Oseok weighed heavily on my body.

I had managed to swallow a mana potion while escaping, but my stamina had already surpassed its limits many times over.

I first raised my arm to remove my hood.

But at that moment, a muffled gunshot was heard from the end of the alley, and then…

WHOOSH—.

“Gah!”

A bullet lodged in my ankle, and I helplessly collapsed onto the ground.

My Stealth was canceled as a bonus.

“Long time no see, Phantom Thief… The Imitator.”

Then, a somewhat familiar voice was heard.

Ignoring the groans of pain, I moved my head to glimpse the owner of the gunshot.

“I haven’t been able to forget this scent and have been tormented by it.”

A man sniffing his nose as if checking his prey, intentionally isolating his shadow below the wall-mounted light…

It was Bruno, the second-in-command of the Psychic Mafia Catalina, the Hunter.

“How did you…!”

“No need to be surprised. I simply followed your scent.”

“…”

He followed my scent?

Even into the 4th Scholastic District, which was difficult to enter?

This surely meant he knew that the Phantom Thief was connected to the 4th Scholastic District.

He had hidden, using the Spring Scholastic War as an opportunity to target me.

I struggled to get up from the ground, but my body wouldn’t obey.

I was wriggling like a caterpillar, and Bruno, watching this, snorted and said.

“It’s paralysis. I used a lightning-element bullet.”

Paralysis, the representative status effect of lightning-element bullets.

Of course, I could use abilities, but they wouldn’t be very effective at the moment.

There was no way I could escape by using Stealth, and the shadows weren’t close enough for me to use shadow abilities.

“Is this what they call déjà vu? It feels like it was the same situation last time.”

“…”

Suddenly, I felt cold sweat.

My spine, touching the cold ground, shivered chillingly, and although the bleeding from my ankle wasn’t flowing out due to the cloak, its metallic scent permeated the alley.

A fact I had overlooked throughout this episode suddenly consumed my mind.

Title: Spring Scholastic War

Characters: Lee Eunho, Park Oseok

Reward: Remake Coins

[The difficulty of the Main Episode will be adjusted proportionally to the amount of Remake Coins used.]

[Remake Coins used for this episode: 0]

[Applied setting intervention rate: 50.000%]

It was the 50% setting intervention rate.

Until now, the intervention rate had affected very little, with the exception of very minor fluctuations.

It wouldn’t have been strange even if it was 5% instead of 50%.

But now, that number began to make sense.

At this point, before the episode had ended.

That is, now, on the verge of its conclusion…

There was no development that better suited a figure of 50% than the death of a sub-character who showed some presence around the main characters.

I quietly swallowed in this predicament.

Bruno’s voice, along with his gun, sharply aimed at me.

“Now, where is the MA13?”
