Chapter 440 440: Twilight of Vellore: The Knight Commanderʼs Presence

Twilight of Vellore: The Knight Commanderʼs Presence

The city of Vellore lay out before them like a living gemstone, lit up by the violet light of twilight. The sun had dipped completely below the horizon, leaving streaks of red and gold that gradually seeped into the richening purple of the evening heavens. Above, there were two moons suspended precariously like remote lanterns, but one had apparently disappeared, consumed by creeping darknesses of night as if the very heavens had decided to toy with the city below.

In spite of the gloom, the capital glittered with life. There were ethereal lamps drifting sluggishly above streets, spilling their golden light over market stalls and walls of stone, bathing all in a gentle, magical sheen that danced very lightly in the soft evening wind. The streets vibrated with the beat of night-time vitality: traders shouted their final deals, their voices threading through the alleys like song; kids weaved in and out of carts and barrels, bursts of laughter echoing into the cool night; horse-drawn carriages rattled along the weathered cobblestones, their wheels ringing sparks in the dying light.

But the city was not wholly alive. Beyond the teeming marketplaces and vibrant piazzas were closed-off sections, enclaves guarded for the privileged. There, silence was a living force, thick and intentional. No peals of laughter disturbed the mansions; no voices spread across the courtyards. Even the lamps hesitated, their light reserved, as though not wanting to disturb the flawless quiet. The difference was stark—one side of Vellore thrumming with living color, the other standing in religious stillness, untouched by the churning tide of humanity.

Centermost in Vellore, the majestic palace towered like a crown over the city, its double spires piercing the mauve dusk. The roof glimmered with white, gold, and dark green tiles, reflecting the light of lamps below and sending out light like a shower of tiny jewels. From five hundred meters away, the palace shone with an undeniable power, its outer walls faintly glimmering—a quiet declaration of wealth, power, and unyielding prestige. Within it, the courtyard buzzed with disciplined life. Armored men advanced in deliberate cadence, their high-polished plates reflected the light of lanterns, swords belted at their waists, each one bearing the unmistakable sigil of the lion on its chest. Their feet moved in unison, each action a ritual honed after years of relentless training, a living attestation to order and total control.

The huge gates groaned as they creaked open slowly, the thick hinges screaming against the weight of centuries. Out of the gap, a man stepped forward with purposeful intent, each movement careful and calculated. Older, his grey hair whipping about his shoulders, tinged with the toll of decades of service. Deep black eyes watched with quiet ferocity of a man who had battled countless wars and led armies without hesitation. Authority hung around him like armor, and beneath that gravitas there was a quiet edge of danger, a suggestion that he would not hesitate to lash out if provoked—but there was also nobility in the manner in which he moved, quiet dignity that commanded respect.

His armor was heavy and massive, marked by the insignia of many campaigns: shiny enough to catch the soft glow of the lamps, but scuffed and scratched for the efforts awarded in the fiercest of many battles.

He walked like a narrative solidified—every step a sentence, every turn a paragraph of previous battles and steel dicta. The plates were molded to his body as if they had grown on him; the leather thongs sighed where metal touched skin. As he moved, the faint smell of oil and ancient smoke wafted from the mail, intermingling with the courtyard dust. A loose banner danced on the wall, but it was his arrival that caused the entire square to catch its breath.

Outside of him, the peasants bowed involuntarily. Old women grasped their shawls, children hid behind skirts, and the merchantsʼ chatter dropped to a low, cowed hum. Their eyes followed him like flint after a spark—half reverence, half terror. You could see the tale written on their faces: a thousand unpaid debts small, thousands quiet hopes staked on the favor of a man clad in steel.

Sir Aden halted in the middle of the courtyard. The sun illumined the upper ridges of his armor and cast them back like a threat. He did not need to brush his cape aside or lift a hand; the hush around him was already a response. His jaw was set, though not cruel—a bit more like stone that had learned to hold its shape.

His words dropped like a sleep-practiced command. His voice was sharp, deliberate, and held the kind of authority only tempered by decades of continuous service. ”As you are aware, I am your Knight Commander. Do not falter in your duties. One error, and my blade—and your throat—will be there to pay the price.”

Even the most junior recruits, some barely out of boyhood, felt a shiver run down their spines. They had trained for years, but Sir Adenʼs presence was a living proof of what discipline and steadfast resolve could achieve. His hair had gone silver, the lines etched on his face proclaiming countless battles and sleepless nights, but his aura remained unbroken, an unmovable force of power and precision. He was a Grandmaster Realm practitioner, a man whose blows could fracture stone and smash mountains. To see him was to experience the reverberation of centuries of honor and war, and all the soldiers of Vellore bore him respect not out of fear, but because he represented the justice, which they all strove to maintain.

Legends told of Sir Aden standing firm in front of kings, contending, defying, and defending the kingdom without fail. Even now, observing him scanning the muster with eyes that seemed to bore into the souls of those who attended, one could sense the gravity of his wars and the wounds taken in the name of the kingdom. His eyes scanned each soldier, a silent reminder that every step counted, every decision had weight.

”Yes, Sir Aden,”
