Chapter 319: The Weight of Her Heart

The Weight of Her Heart

Mia’s shoulders shook, barely, like she was holding back more than just a nod. Her voice came out low, fragile, almost breaking—like the weight behind it was too much for words alone.

”I just... I worry for my mother.”

Leon felt it before she even spoke—her fear, the tight, suffocating silence wrapped around her like a shroud. His golden eyes narrowed, catching the light sharp as a blade, but beneath that edge, there was something softer, quietly surprised and aching.

They all understood. The heaviness sat thick in the room, like a storm waiting to crash down. Everyone remembered what Leon had revealed. The truth about the monster behind the Eastern assault. The name of the traitor that turned their blood cold. And above all, the final, rasping words of dying General Dire—barely audible, yet heavy with doom: The Eastern border has already fallen.

Vellore’s army had taken the Eastern Duchy.

And the Eastern Duchy... was Starlight Duchy. Mia’s home. Her city. Her bloodline.

The fall wasn’t just strategic. It was personal.

Leon drew in a slow breath, heavy in his chest. He knew this wasn’t about the city itself. Not the walls, the banners, or the pride of a house. Mia didn’t care for the marble halls or the father who once ruled them with vanity. That wasn’t what made her voice tremble.

It was her mother. Still trapped there. Still alive, maybe. And Mia—gentle, quiet Mia—cared with a depth few could match. That kind of love didn’t fade just because a city fell.

And that love... it settled inside Leon like a thorn, sharp and undeniable.

He reached for her, hand soft as it cupped her cheek. His thumb brushed lightly over the tear she refused to let fall. His voice was low, quiet, without drama—but heavy, steady. The kind of voice that anchors someone when the world trembles.

”Mia... look at me.”

She hesitated, then slowly raised her gaze. Her dark eyes shimmered, wet with emotion, the edges trembling despite her efforts to stay strong.

Leon’s thumb glided over her skin again, gentler this time, as if he could brush away her fear just with touch.

”Don’t worry. Your mother will be safe.” His tone didn’t waver, not even when he spoke the harder truth. ”Your father... he’s made selfish choices. You know that. So do I. But when it comes to protecting his blood—his region, his family—he’s not the kind of man to run. Not when it matters.”

There was a pause. A faint catch in his throat. He exhaled, steadying himself.

”And we don’t even know if what General Dire said was true. The border, the city... it could be misinformation. Meant to weaken morale. To divide us before the real attack even begins.”

Mia pressed her lips together, worry still there, but no longer consuming her whole. A thin thread of hope slipped into her eyes—fragile but enough to hold onto with trembling fingers.

Leon leaned in slightly, his next words chosen with care. ”For your peace of mind... I’ve already sent Natasha.”

That name stopped her. Her eyes widened.

Leon gave a small, meaningful smile, not cocky—just certain. ”You know who she is. What she’s capable of. Natasha’s not just some warrior or soldier. She’s Monarch Realm. Trained under the enemy’s nose. A ghost in Vellore’s own ranks. If your mother is still alive... if the city hasn’t completely fallen... Natasha will find her.”

Mia’s shoulders eased, just a little—but that was enough. She nodded softly, eyes gentle.

Leon cupped her face gently and kissed her. Slow. Deep. Their lips met like the answer to a silent ache—lingering, warm, full of quiet understanding. When they parted, his smile reached deep, touching her soul.

”Rest now,” he murmured, voice low and warm.

But before she could even find the words, he leaned in once more, pressing one last kiss against her lips. It was steady, sure—unwavering. The room around them melted away, time holding its breath between their mouths. Every shared breath hung heavy, like a silent promise neither dared speak aloud. When they finally pulled apart, the gentle warmth in his smile said everything words could never capture.

”Good night, love,” he whispered.

Mia’s eyes softened, her voice barely more than a whisper, brushing against his chest like a soft breeze. ”Good night, darling.”

Behind them, the others stayed frozen, quiet witnesses to a fragile moment they knew was theirs to watch, but never to break. They said nothing, their eyes speaking only respect. Whatever questions lingered on their tongues, they held them back. Mia needed this—no one would take it from her.

Rias, always the first to step in when it mattered, moved beside her after Leon’s touch had steadied her heart. She wrapped an arm around Mia’s shoulders, her voice gentle, almost motherly. ”Don’t worry. Your mother’s safe. Get some rest, darling—you’ve earned a long night.”

Tsubaki’s black eyes, normally so disciplined, softened around the edges. Her words came low and calm. ”We all need rest... for tomorrow.”

Aria, Cynthia, Syra, Kyra, Tsubaki, Fey, Rui, Lena, Mira, and Mona drifted off one by one, the tension of the night easing into light, playful farewells.

”Goodnight, Darling!” Syra called out, blowing exaggerated kisses like a mischievous schoolgirl.

Lira blushed at once but smiled out of it, fingers stroking back hair as she laughed—torn between mortification and love.

Leon shook his head, letting a soft laugh escape from deep within him. That love they shared curled up warm and settled in his chest, like a low-burning flame. He didn’t say it out loud—he didn’t need to—but it was there, in plain sight. This was home.

When the last door creaked shut into place, the room again silent, Leon’s eyes swept over the room. There was just one person remaining.

Lira.

She lingered right at the very edge of the hallway, wrapped softly in the glow of the orb floating overhead. Her silver-white hair caught every flicker, sparkling like moonlight scattering over freshly fallen snow. That faint flush from their teasing still bloomed softly on her cheeks, but her eyes... her eyes had shifted. There was something different there now.

”So, my princess,” his voice dropped to a low, smooth whisper—like a secret breathed just between them, ”are you coming with me?”

Her lips lifted into a quiet, shy smile, her eyes bright with a strange mix of nervousness and electricity. ”Yes,” she breathed back.

They moved side by side toward the last door on the left. The door clicked softly behind them—a sound oddly sharp in the silence.

The room was small, yes, but it felt warm and inviting, like a quiet promise. A plain bed, no windows. Nothing but the soft golden light of a magical sphere suspended above, dropping down quiet light everywhere. Silent now. The two of them.

Leon turned, his eyes meeting hers.

Lira took a sharp breath, color flushing into her cheeks again. Her hands toyed with the hem of her robe.

Leon smiled—not taunting, no—but gentle. Drinking in the vision of her shy, flustered beauty. He leaned slightly closer, voice playful but low.

”So, my princess... how do you want to start?”
