Rebate King: Every Beauty I Spoil Makes Me a Billionaire

”I’m not trying to settle a debt,” Stan said. ”I want to help. If there’s anything. Anything at all.”

”Work,” she said at last, quieter. The embarrassment sat on her without making her smaller. ”It has been difficult. If it stays like this...” Her eyes moved, unwilling, toward Mia. ”Even school. Velaris Crown. I don’t like saying that to you. You used to fall asleep on that sofa with your shoes still on.”

Stan took it the way he took most serious things: without flinch. ”I have receptionist posts open. Several companies. Different offices. Pay depends on the site, twenty thousand to sixty thousand dollars, depending on what you want to carry. You look at them. You pick. You start when you’re ready. Grayson will walk you through all of it.” He took out his phone, wrote the number on the back of a receipt that had been holding the salt, and slid it across the wood. ”That’s him. He answers.”

Mrs. Edith stared at the paper as if it might change its mind. Behind her eyes the arithmetic of years rearranged itself: the boy whose parents left him in her care, the teenager who ate second helpings without shame, the nineteen-year-old sitting in her morning light with majority shares in more than two companies whose names people said in the same breath as money.

Who would believe her. She almost laughed. She almost cried. She did neither. She folded the receipt once, carefully, and put it in the pocket of her apron like something that should not be left on a table.

”Thank you,” she said, and the two words had to hold more than they were built for.

Stan stood and put his arms around her. It was a polite hug. It was the kind that says the door does not close because breakfast is over.

When he turned, Mia was already there, and he held her too, warm, brief, a pressure that remembered last night without announcing it. She breathed against his shoulder and let go first.

Sacha piled on with both of them, noisy, extra, kissing Mrs. Edith’s cheek and bumping Mia with her hip. ”We’ll call. Don’t let the garden win.”

With Sunlight on the threshold and the house behind them still smelling like breakfast. Soft goodbyes stacked on top of each other, come back, eat before you travel, tell Grayson I said he had better be kind, until there was nothing left but the step down into the day.

Stan paused on the path and looked once at the windows. Mia was in one of them, not waving, just present. Sacha hooked her arm through his and tugged.

They left. The goodbye stayed in the air the way good cooking stays in a hallway: unseen, and unmistakable, and not quite finished.

....

The street received them without ceremony.

Mild air, a quiet run of houses, someone’s radio two doors down turned low enough to be furniture.

The Audi sat where he had left it, dark paint holding a thin skin of morning. Stan and Sacha walked side by side, not quite touching, the easy spacing of people who had shared back seats and secrets since they were small.

Sacha spoke first, softer than she had been at the table.

”They’re still the same,” she said. ”Auntie. Mia. Warm like nothing in the city ever taught them not to be.” A breath. ”I thought I’d lost those years. Then I sat there eating her eggs and it all came back. The porch. The way she used to shout our names like the whole block was her kitchen.”

”Yes,” Stan said.

They took a few more steps. A dog barked once and thought better of it.

”It felt like the old neighborhood put a light on for a night,” Sacha went on. ”Even if we don’t live in it anymore.”

”They’re doing all right,” he said. ”Better than all right, if the bread is evidence.”

She smiled at the ground. ”You always measure love in food.”

”It doesn’t lie.”

They reached the car. He took out his phone before he opened the door, thumb already finding Grayson. The call connected on the second ring.

”Stan.” Grayson’s voice came easy, the particular ease of a man who owned a piece of the same mountain and did not need to perform it. ”How’ve you been. You need something?”

”I’m well. A friend of mine needs work. Reception. I’ve given her the vacant posts across the Wanhai branches.” He said it the way he said most useful things: without ornament. ”Don’t worry about whether she can do it. Years in the chair. She knows the job.”

He did not add the rest. He did not need to. In Inksea, back when their families had still lived wall to wall, he had heard the adult talk drift through open windows, Mrs. Edith’s name spoken with the particular respect people save for someone who kept a front desk from becoming a mess. Capable. Remembered. The kind of competence that does not advertise.

”She’ll call you,” Stan said. ”Brief her on all of it. Locations, hours, what each desk actually carries. Let her choose.”

”Done,” Grayson said. ”Send her through.”

”Thank you.”

The call ended as cleanly as it had begun. Stan opened the driver’s door. Sacha took the passenger side with the unthinking claim of someone who had always sat there. Doors shut, two solid sounds in the quiet street. The engine woke, a low civilized hum. He pulled out of the little parking strip and turned toward the road that would take them out of Velaris and back toward Inksea.

Movement found Mia.

She was in the window they had left behind, one hand lifted, not frantic, just present. Morning light made a pale frame of her. Stan raised his hand off the wheel in answer. Sacha leaned across him without shame, waving hard enough to be seen from the moon, and blew a kiss so theatrical the glass should have fogged.

Mia smiled. She blew one back.

It was a small thing. It closed the visit better than another spoken goodbye would have. Stan watched her a second longer than the road strictly allowed, then put his eyes forward. The house slid out of the mirror. Velaris began to thin.

Sacha sat back, still a little bright from the window.

”She’s going to stand there until she can’t see the car,” she said.

”Probably.”

”You’re allowed to look pleased about that.”
