Rebate King: Every Beauty I Spoil Makes Me a Billionaire

He sat a moment with the key in his hand, not from hesitation, only from the habit of arriving fully in a space before asking it to move. The dashboard woke when he started the engine, pale instruments, a soft hum came with no growl.

The Audi’s voice was a low, even hum, almost modest. He adjusted the mirror and the seatbelt found its latch.

Alone, the tightness he carried in other people’s rooms eased a fraction. Not relief exactly. Lightness, the small kind that came with a moment alone and a clear next step. Pick up his sister. Velaris. Mia and her mother. One night. The route was simple. The evening had edges again.

A residual awareness of the landing remained, the red of Camilla’s eyes, the bitten lip he was not supposed to have seen, the formal promise of cultivation resources hanging in the air like an unpaid invoice. He set it aside the way he set aside weather he could not change. The road asked for his hands.

He shifted into gear and pulled out of the space. Tires whispered over clean concrete.

At the mouth of the lot the city opened in a corridor of lights, shopfronts and signals and the dark intervals between them. He waited for a gap, then merged into the nighttime streets.

The Audi took the lane without comment, smooth, quiet, precise. Behind him the high-rise receded, a stacked geometry of windows, some lit, most not. Ahead, his sister’s building, then the longer stretch toward Velaris.

He drove. The cabin stayed still except for the engine and the faint tick of cooling metal settling into motion. Streetlight after streetlight passed over the hood and sliding off again. He did not look back.

He kept to the quieter route, the one that avoided the worst of the late traffic, and let the city thin around him in layers: shopfronts first, then darker blocks of apartments, then the older streets where the lamps stood farther apart and the night had more room.

Camilla would be upstairs with the phone by now. He pictured her turning it in her palm, red eyes narrowed in that serious way she had when a thing was new and therefore deserved attention. The thought did not pull at him. It simply existed, then moved aside for the next practical piece. Sacha. Then Velaris. Then a night that needed to stay ordinary on the surface.

He drove through a district he knew by the smell of fried oil and warm pavement, past a corner store still open for no good reason except that someone always needed something late. A bus sighed at a stop and pulled away. He waited for it, then went on. The radio stayed off. The cabin was enough: engine, tires, the faint tick of the dash.

Closer in, the streets grew familiar in a different way. Not the high-rise’s polished quiet. This was his sister’s neighborhood, uneven sidewalks, windows lit in mismatched squares, a bicycle locked to a rail that had been there for years.

He slowed without thinking about it. The last turn came up on the left, the one with the leaning sign and the tree that dropped leaves onto the curb in every season.

He took it.

The road opened in a short, straight run. A streetlight stood at the far end like a marker. Under it, already waiting, bag on her shoulder, face tipped toward the sight of a car she recognized,

Sacha. Stan saw her before he fully stopped.

Sacha stood at the curb in the spill of a streetlight, bag slung over one shoulder, already looking at the Audi as if she had timed his arrival to the second. He pulled in. She opened the passenger door and dropped into the seat with the unthinking ease of someone who had been doing this since the car was still too big for both of them.

”You’re late by three minutes,” she said, buckling in. ”I was about to start a rumor.”

”You were on your phone.”

”I can start a rumor from my phone. That’s the point of living in this century.” She glanced at the dashboard, then at him. ”You look less tragic than I expected. That’s good, seems as expected you’re having fun with your ’comrade’ Camilla.”

Laughing at the teasing joke, He pulled back into traffic. The Audi took the lane in its quiet way. Night lay along the windshield in streaks of shop light and signal red. Sacha settled, kicked her shoes a fraction looser, and exhaled as if the car itself were a room she trusted.

”I kept thinking about their kitchen,” she said, after a stretch of ordinary road. ”Isn’t that stupid? Not even Mia first. The kitchen. Mrs. Edith always had something on that back burner that smelled nice, like it had been there since morning on purpose. And that yellow towel on the oven handle that never matched anything.”

”It was burnt on one corner.”

”Because you put it too close to the flame that one time and then denied it.”

”I was eleven.”

”You were guilty.” She smiled at the glass. ”I missed that house. The way their front room always felt like it had just been lived in, it felt lively even if nobody was talking. Shoes by the door that weren’t only theirs. Dad, Mia’s dad, leaving the news on low like it was company. And us just... fitting. Two families in one hallway and nobody making a speech about it.”

Stan drove. The memory arrived without asking: the narrow side street, the paint that peeled in the same place every summer, Mia’s laugh from the stairs, Mrs. Edith’s voice carrying from the kitchen as if volume were a form of welcome.

”It felt normal,” he said. ”That’s what I remember. Not special. Just normal. Then they were gone and the normal had a hole in it.”

”Strange doesn’t even cover it.” Sacha’s voice thinned, then found itself again. ”One week they were asking if we wanted extra rice. Next week the windows were dark and someone else’s mail was on the mat. I used to walk past on the way to the shop like an idiot, as if the house might change its mind.”

”I did that once.”

”You never told me.”

”There was nothing to tell. It was still dark.”
