Investing in My Crippled Wife: My Duchess Makes me Overpowered

The arena erupted.

A knight in full plate charged him.

The man was massive—six and a half feet of steel and muscle. He carried a broadsword in both hands, the blade as long as Emeric was tall. He bellowed as he swung, a wild overhead strike meant to cleave Emeric in two.

Emeric didn’t draw his daggers. He didn’t reach for his magic.

He stepped inside the swing.

The blade whistled past his ear, close enough to stir his hair. He caught the knight’s wrist with his left hand, twisted, and felt the bones grind. The man screamed. The sword clattered to the stone.

Emeric drove his right fist into the knight’s breastplate. The metal buckled. The man flew backward—five feet, ten, fifteen—and tumbled over the edge of the platform.

He hit the sand below with a crash of steel.

Emeric didn’t watch him fall. He was already moving.

A mage hurled a fireball.

Emeric ducked under it. The heat washed over his back. He rolled, came up inside the mage’s guard, and drove his elbow into the man’s throat. The mage gagged. Emeric grabbed his collar and threw him over the wall.

Two.

A pair of mercenaries rushed him together. Coordinated. One high, one low. The first swung a sword at his head. The second stabbed at his legs.

He jumped.

He planted his foot on the first mercenary’s sword arm, using it as a step, and drove his knee into the second man’s face. The mercenary’s head snapped back. He collapsed.

Emeric landed, spun, and caught the first mercenary’s follow-up swing with his forearm. The blade bit into his skin—shallow, not deep. He ignored it. His fist found the man’s jaw. The mercenary crumpled.

He kicked them both over the edge.

Four.

The platform was chaos.

Warriors fought warriors. Mages dueled mages. Knights clashed with Vessels. The sand was stained with blood. The air was thick with smoke and screams.

Emeric moved through it like a ghost.

He didn’t seek fights. He didn’t avoid them. He just moved. When someone attacked, he defended. When someone blocked his path, he removed them. Efficiently. Methodically. Without mercy.

A woman with twin daggers came at him. Fast. Precise. She slashed at his throat. He leaned back—barely—and felt the wind of the blade pass over his skin. He caught her wrist, twisted, and drove his palm into her chest. She flew backward and hit the wall. She didn’t get up.

Five.

A paladin with a glowing mace charged him. The weapon crackled with holy energy. Emeric sidestepped the first swing, ducked the second, and drove his fist into the man’s armored gut. The paladin doubled over. Emeric grabbed his head and slammed it into his knee. The man collapsed.

Six.

He saw faces he recognized.

Vespera Pendragon. She moved like water. Untouchable. Every attack that came her way was redirected. Every opponent that faced her was defeated. She didn’t even look winded. She caught a knight’s sword with her bare hand, twisted it from his grip, and kicked him off the platform. She didn’t glance at Emeric. She didn’t need to.

The Vaelthorne elves. Aerion. Caelum. Lyra. They fought together—coordinated even if there were no teams involved. They deadly, their magic intertwined. Fire and wind and ice swirled around them, creating storms that swept opponents off their feet. They moved as one. They killed as one. He knew how dangerous they were first hand.

Emeric noted them. Filed them away.

Then he kept moving.

A massive warrior charged him.

The man was maybe seven feet tall. Arms like tree trunks. He swung a hammer that could crush stone. Emeric dodged left. The hammer hit the ground where he’d been standing, cracking the stone. He dodged right. Another swing. Another crack.

The warrior was strong. But he was slow.

Emeric waited. Let him commit to another swing. Then he stepped inside, grabbed the hammer’s handle, and twisted. The warrior’s grip broke. Emeric took the hammer and swung it—not at the man, but at his legs. The warrior toppled. Emeric kicked him over the edge.

Seven.

The numbers dwindled.

Hundred became seventy . Seventy became sixty. The platform was littered with the fallen. Some were unconscious. Some bleeding. Some dead.

Emeric stood near the center. Breathing hard. Covered in sweat and blood—none of it his own.

He saw a woman fighting nearby. Young. Wiry. Hair the color of fire. She fought with a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other—fast, aggressive, relentless. She cut down a knight who had been charging her from behind. Then she spun and drove her blade into a mage’s chest.

She was good. Very good.

She glanced at him. Their eyes met for a moment.

Then she turned and disappeared into the chaos.

He didn’t follow. He didn’t need to.

A horn sounded.

The messenger’s voice echoed across the arena.

”The qualifiers are complete! Fifty competitors remain! Congratulations to those who advanced! The rest of you—leave the arena!”

The crowd roared.

Emeric looked around. Fifty warriors stood on the platform. Bloodied. Battered. Victorious.

He saw Vespera Pendragon. The Vaelthorne elves. Kaelen—somehow, his brother had survived. He was standing with a group of nobles, his face pale, his eyes wild.

And he saw a man he didn’t recognize.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. Scarred. The man was staring at him. His eyes were cold. Calculating. There was something familiar about him—something in the set of his jaw, the way he held himself.

But Emeric didn’t know him.

Then he turned and walked toward the staging grounds.

The qualifiers were over.

The real trials had just begun.

Emeric read the notification and closed it.

He had advanced.

But this was just the beginning.

The sun was setting when Emeric left the staging grounds.

His body ached. Not from injury—he had none worth mentioning. Just the deep, bone-tired ache of a long day. His muscles were sore. His knuckles were raw. His tunic was stained with sweat and sand and blood that wasn’t his.

The streets of Aurelia were still crowded.
