Investing in My Crippled Wife: My Duchess Makes me Overpowered

”The four Primal Elements are the foundation. Fire, Water, Earth, Wind. Everything else—everything derives from them. A mage with a single affinity controls one element. A mage with two can do more. But those who can combine elements? That’s where true power lies.”

Emeric was clearly intrigued. ”Combinations?”

”Fire and Wind create Storm Magic. Lightning, tempests. That was what I used.” Her voice was quiet, tinged with old loss.

”Earth and Fire create Forge Magic. Earth and Wind create Force Magic; that’s what Voss uses. Earth and Water create Nature Magic. The combinations are limited only by the mage’s ability to master both elements and merge them seamlessly.”

”And the Hero?”

”He was something else entirely.” Isolde said, almost reminiscently. ”The old texts say he was blessed with all four elements. He could combine all of them. Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, working in perfect harmony. That’s Primordial Magic.” She looked up at him, her eyes intent. ”The power to shape reality itself.”

Emeric sat with that for a moment. Primordial Magic. Control over all four elements working together.

”And what about the demons?” he asked. ”What made them so powerful?”

”Demons don’t use Primal Elements.” Isolde’s voice was flat. ”They use something else. Dark magic, Blood magic, Void magic. Magic that consumes rather than creates. The Hero’s power was creation. Theirs was destruction. That’s why they could be defeated—but only by someone who could match their power.”

She paused, her fingers tracing the spine of a book she was unconsciously playing with.

”And that’s where the legend ends,” she said quietly. ”Once the demons were defeated, he vanished. No one knows what happened to him. The gods blessed him, and then he simply... disappeared.”

”Why did you want to know?” she asked.

Emeric considered his answer carefully. He couldn’t tell her the truth.

”I just want to understand,” he said finally. ”Where magic comes from. What it means to wield it. What I’m supposed to do with what I’ve been given.”

She studied him, her eyes searching his face. Then she nodded slowly, accepting his answer.

”Fire, Water, Earth, Wind,” she said, her voice soft but steady. ”Those are the elements. But it’s what you do with them that matters. The best mage I ever knew was a single-affinity Water mage who healed more soldiers than any ten combat mages combined.” She reached out, her hand finding his. ”It’s not the elements that make you powerful, Emeric. It’s what you choose to do with them.”

”Now!” She said, changing the tone from its previously tell-tale nature. ”Back to training.”

”Kylian Voss is a force mage,” Isolde continued. ”He uses telekinetic blasts and shockwaves to overwhelm his opponents. He’s not subtle, and he’s not creative. He’s brute force, pure and simple. But brute force is effective, especially against someone who doesn’t know how to counter it.”

”How do I counter it?”

”You need to learn how to fight with magic,” she said. ”Not just defend. Attack. Counter. Control.”

”Survival won’t win you a duel. You need to be able to strike back.”

He nodded, absorbing her words. ”What do you suggest?”

She wheeled closer, stopping a few feet from him. ”Show me the wind.”

”But I...”

He had never used any type of magic apart from sensing his core and tapping into it.

He could do this, he told himself, without waiting for her to repeat herself.

He closed his eyes, reaching for the familiar warmth of his core. It came easily now—the soft pressure of air moving, the sensation of pressure building around him. He opened his eyes and extended his hand, palm up.

A faint breeze stirred the air in the room. The lamp flickered. A loose piece of paper on the desk lifted, fluttered, settled back down.

”Good,” she said. ”The wind responds to you. But wind alone is just a part of the process.”

She looked at him, her eyes intent. ”Now I don’t know what elements you can control but let’ try.” She said, directing him to a spot away from the shelves.

”I need you to feel something else. Heat. Pressure. The spark of energy that lives beneath your skin.”

He frowned. ”I don’t—”

”Close your eyes.”

He did.

”Now, reach for the wind again. Let it move through you, feel its shape, its motion.” Her voice was soft, guiding. ”Now, imagine something else. A warmth in your chest. A heat that builds and builds, pressure that wants to be released. Don’t force it. Just let it exist alongside the wind.”

He focused inward, trying to follow her guidance. The wind was there, familiar. But the heat was elusive. He could feel something stirring, but it wouldn’t take shape.

”I can’t,” he admitted, frustration creeping into his voice.

”Yes, you can,” she said firmly. ”You’re just not letting yourself feel it.”

She reached out, her hand finding his. Her fingers were cool against his palm.

”Listen to me,” she said. ”I want you to imagine the wind as movement. As motion. The way air rushes through a storm. The way it builds and builds, ready to break free.”

He nodded, his eyes still closed.

”Now, I want you to imagine the fire as pressure. Not heat—not yet. Just the feeling of something building. Something waiting to be released. The pressure behind a storm, the moment before lightning strikes.”

He focused inward, letting her words sink in. The wind was there, a familiar companion. But beneath it, something else stirred. A warmth. A tension. A pressure that wanted to break free.

”I feel it,” he said, surprise coloring his voice. ”There’s something there.”

”That’s the fire,” she said, her voice soft. ”Now, imagine them together. The wind and the pressure. The movement and the power. They’re not separate. They’re one force. The wind becomes the pressure. The pressure moves with the wind. They’re the same thing, just... different parts of the same storm.”

He tried to merge them. The wind, the pressure, the warmth—all of them flowing together.

It was like trying to hold water in his hands. The moment he thought he had it, something slipped, and the feeling faded.
