Count Blade did not open the sixth bottle.

He set his palm on the ledger instead, as if the paper might try to leave the table.

”Three villages in the first month. Then it stopped looking like bandits.”

Rigel leaned back.

Stone dust still clung to his sleeve.

Across from him, Mesterica had already stopped glaring at Cynthia.

Cynthia had already stopped gripping her own wrist.

Both of them faced the map.

That, more than the Count’s tone, told him it was real.

”Names,” Rigel said.

”East woodcutter hamlet. Riverbend. The old relay post on the north road.”

Count Blade tapped each mark.

”At first we assumed remnants. Old Valstine soldiers hiding in the hills, taking laborers, selling them over the border.”

”And?”

”Remnants do not return the stolen goods.”

A civil official turned a page.

The paper was cheap and already worn at the corners.

Someone had been reading it too often.

”Riverbend lost seven. Four men, two women, one boy. Six days later five of them walked back at dawn.”

”Walked,” Mesterica repeated.

”Yes. No bindings. No wounds worth a healer. They knew their houses. They answered to their names.”

The official swallowed.

”The boy came back too. His mother fed him. He ate. Then he asked where the well cover was kept, and whether the night watch still changed at the third bell.”

Cynthia’s brows drew together.

”That is a normal question.”

”It is,” Count Blade said.

”If the boy had ever stood night watch. He was nine. He had never been allowed near the well after dark.”

The room went quiet in a different way from the earlier shouting.

A chair creaked.

Dust from the cracked ceiling settled on the ink bottle and nobody brushed it off.

Rigel looked at the map.

Three marks were not a pattern yet.

They were a direction.

”The two who did not return?”

”The woodcutter’s wife. And a hired guard from the relay post.”

Count Blade’s finger slid west, then stopped short of the old border stones.

”We found the guard’s sword in a ditch. No body. The wife… her husband swears he heard her voice in the treeline the night the others came home. He went out with a lamp. In the morning he was sitting by the fence. He said she told him not to follow the lights.”

”Lights,” Rigel said.

”He could not describe them. Only that they were the wrong color for lanterns.”

Mesterica folded her arms.

”Illusion. Suggestion. Or a contract that leaves the body and borrows the mouth.”

She said it like inventory.

”Have you brought one of the returned here?”

”We did. A miller from Riverbend.”

Count Blade glanced at the door, then back.

”He sat in this chair. He thanked us for the bread. He asked after grain prices. Then he asked how many soldiers sleep in the north wing, and whether the inner storerooms still connect to the old servant passages.”

Rigel almost smiled.

Almost.

”He wanted a floor plan.”

”He wanted several. We locked him in a side room. By morning the room was empty and the window latch was still bolted from the inside.”

Cynthia stood so fast her chair hopped.

”That is not a villager.”

”No,” Count Blade said.

”That is why I did not put it in the first report to the capital. His Majesty sent you to look with your own eyes. I would rather you look before the story grows teeth.”

Rigel turned the ledger toward himself.

The handwriting was neat where the Count had written.

It grew uglier where field officers had added lines at night.

Missing.

Returned.

Wrong questions.

Empty room.

At the bottom, in a different ink:

Do not let them near the old royal archive.

”Who wrote that?”

The civil official hesitated.

”Lady Mesterica. Yesterday.”

Mesterica did not look embarrassed.

”The archive still has maps of the underways. If whatever this is is mapping us, that room is a gift.”

”You went in?” Rigel asked.

”I started to.”

Her mouth thinned.

”Cynthia stopped me. We argued. A pillar paid for it.”

Cynthia’s ears colored, but she did not deny it.

”The door had been opened recently. Not by us. The dust on the threshold was wrong.”

Rigel stood.

The repair-site ache in his hip was still there.

It felt far away.

”I want the miller’s house. And the boy. And the husband who heard his wife in the trees.”

”The boy is in the east ward infirmary,” Count Blade said.

”The husband will not leave his fence. The miller’s house we sealed.”

”Unseal it.”

”Tonight?”

”Now.”

Rigel picked up his coat.

”If they come back asking about wells and night watches, they are not done asking. I want to see what they left on the floor before someone sweeps it into a story about grief.”

Mesterica moved with him.

Cynthia moved too.

Their shoulders almost touched, then both of them noticed and made a space with Rigel in the middle again.

”You two stay here,” he said.

”No.”

”No.”

The same word, same timing.

Rigel clicked his tongue.

”Then you do not fight. You do not break doors. You do not pour mana into a holy sword inside a house where a child slept.”

Cynthia’s hand had already drifted to her hilt.

She took it away.

Mesterica said, ”If something wearing a villager’s face reaches for you, I will cut first and apologize at the funeral.”

”Do that outside the archive.”

Count Blade watched them go.

When the door shut, the civil official exhaled like a man coming up from water.

”Shall I send an escort?”

”Send Erna’s crew to brace the north corridor,” Count Blade said.

”If the young lord starts opening sealed houses, I want the castle able to close.”

He looked at the unopened bottle.

This time he pulled the stopper.

”And keep the returned names off the open duty roster. If they walk in asking for work, they already know too much about how we sleep.”

The miller’s house sat at the edge of Riverbend like it had been trying to leave the village and lost its nerve.

The well in the yard had a new cover.

Someone had nailed it down twice.

A local watchman unlocked the door and would not step through it.

”Smell’s wrong,” he said.

”Not death. Just… flour that sat in the rain.”

Rigel went in first.

The front room was ordinary.

Table. Two chairs. A clay bowl with a dried ring of porridge.

A child’s wooden horse under the bench, one ear chewed.

Mesterica opened the shutters a finger-width.

Light cut the dust and showed footprints.

Not mud.

Pale film, like someone had walked through wet chalk and forgotten to wipe it.

Cynthia crouched by the hearth.

”Ash is cold. Last fire was days ago. But the kettle’s been moved since.”

Rigel picked the kettle up.

The bottom was clean.

Too clean for a house that had been sealed.

He set it down and opened the back room.

The bed was made.

That was the first mistake.

A miller pulled out of his life in the dark does not come home and square the corners.

On the pillow there was a hair.

Gold, not the miller’s brown.

Too long for the boy.

Mesterica’s voice dropped.

”Elf?”

”Or someone who wants us to think elf,” Rigel said.

He turned the pillow.

Under it was a strip of black metal, no wider than a finger.

No luster.

On the inner face, a fragment of a carved mark.

Not a full array.

A piece, as if it had been broken off something larger and left on purpose.

Rigel’s thumb stopped before it touched the groove.

He had seen that style of mark two weeks ago.

On a collar.

On Irina’s throat, and then in the formula he had taken apart and rebuilt for Miena.

Not the same.

Close enough that his mana itched.

”Don’t touch it,” he said.

Cynthia had already been reaching.

She pulled back.

”What is it?”

”A leftover command.”

Rigel wrapped the strip in a cloth from the table without letting skin meet metal.

”Or bait that wants a caster to finish the sentence.”

Outside, the watchman called, thin.

”My lord. The boy’s awake. He’s asking for the man who came in the carriage.”

Rigel looked at Mesterica.

Then at Cynthia.

Then at the neatly made bed.

”He shouldn’t know I came in a carriage.”

No one answered that.

They left the house as they had found it, except for the cloth packet in Rigel’s coat.

The well cover stayed nailed.

The chalk footprints stayed on the floor.

Wind moved the wooden horse’s remaining ear, and it knocked once against the bench leg like a small, polite visitor.

At the infirmary the boy sat with his feet not quite reaching the floor.

Nine, the report said.

His eyes were older than that in the way of children who have watched a house burn.

They were older than that in another way too.

He smiled when he saw Rigel.

It was a good smile.

Practiced.

”You’re the strong one,” the boy said.

”Mother said a strong one would come if we were good.”

”Where is your mother?” Rigel asked.

The boy’s gaze flicked to the window, to the line of trees beyond the ward wall.

For a moment the smile slipped, and something behind it looked out.

Hungry.

Interested.

Then the child-face came back, seamless.

”She’s waiting where the lights are,” he said, gentle, almost kind.

”She told me to ask you how the collar works.”

Mesterica’s sword was half an inch from the scabbard before Rigel’s hand found her wrist.

Cynthia had not drawn.

Her holy blade was already humming, very low, like a warning only another fighter would hear.

The boy tilted his head.

”If you don’t tell me, that’s all right. The others will. They always do, after they come back.”

He swung his feet.

The wooden edge of the bed tapped a rhythm.

Third bell.

Night watch change.

Rigel smiled with his mouth only.

”What’s your name?”

”Pell,” the boy said.

”It was Pell this morning, too.”

He said it as if that were the joke.

Then he looked straight at the cloth packet inside Rigel’s coat, at a shape he should not have been able to see, and added, quiet enough that the healer by the door missed it:

”You should not have rebuilt that formula, Lord Gousel. It remembers being worn.”
