ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Arthur followed Eddard Stark’s party in silence as they left the place of execution. He walked near the rear, his eyes moving over the snowy plains and the dark line of trees beyond them. The men of House Stark advanced with the slow steadiness of those who belonged to the land beneath their feet. The direwolf sigil stood out against leather, wool, and steel, almost too fitting beneath the pale northern sky.

The Stark children rode or walked among the party: Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Rickon, and the bastard Jon Snow. Their young faces still carried the solemnity left behind by Will’s death, though youth fought against it. Children recovered quickly. Perhaps that was mercy. Or perhaps they simply did not yet understand how easily a head could leave a body.

Arthur watched them carefully without seeming to. Robb looked like a young lord already trying to become the man others expected him to be. Sansa was beautiful in a polished, delicate way, too clean for the land around her. Arya looked like she wanted to run somewhere she had been told not to go. Bran’s eyes moved everywhere, curious and bright. Rickon was too young to understand much beyond fear and comfort. Jon Snow was quieter than the rest, carrying the unease of a boy who belonged and did not belong at the same time.

A bastard, then.

Westeros seemed fond of making children pay for the sins of adults. A very efficient cruelty, passed down like inheritance.

Halfway back, a murmur rose from the front of the party. Lord Stark raised one hand, and the group stopped. He dismounted and walked toward the trees. Arthur looked in the same direction and saw the body of a direwolf lying in the snow.

It was enormous.

Larger than any wolf Arthur had ever imagined. Its fur was thick and grey-white, its body strong even in death. A wound marked its neck, still wet with blood. Beside it were six pups, small and blind to the cruelty of the world that had already taken their mother. They whimpered softly, their fur pale against the snow.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

The direwolf was the sigil of House Stark. That much he knew. A dead mother with six living pups. Six Stark children. A ridiculous coincidence, if one still believed in those. Men loved calling things coincidence when they were too frightened to use the word fate.

The Stark children gathered around the pups almost immediately. Robb picked one up first, careful despite his excitement. Sansa’s expression softened when she saw them. Arya was quicker, less delicate, but not less gentle. Bran and Rickon looked as if they had discovered something sent by the old gods themselves. Jon Snow took the smallest and palest pup, the quiet one that looked half ghost already.

There were exactly six.

Enough for all of them.

Arthur watched their faces as they looked toward Eddard Stark, asking without asking.

Lord Stark stood still for a long moment. His eyes moved from the dead mother to the pups in his children’s arms. Snowflakes crossed his face, but he seemed carved from something colder. Finally, he sighed. It was a small sound, almost lost to the wind. He did not scold them. He did not order the pups killed. He simply told his men to take care of the dead direwolf’s body.

Permission, northern style.

Arthur watched in silence. This was not merely children taking in orphaned beasts. There was weight in it. He could feel it, though he could not name all the pieces. The bond between House Stark and those wolves would matter. Perhaps not today. Perhaps not tomorrow. But Westeros seemed like the kind of land where every small mercy grew teeth eventually.

The party moved on. After some time, the walls of Winterfell appeared through the falling snow. The castle rose from the land like something that had grown there instead of being built. Its stone walls were heavy and dark, the towers grim beneath their caps of white. It was not beautiful in the way southern castles might be beautiful, with bright banners and delicate towers. Winterfell had no need to be pretty. It only needed to endure.

It had stood for thousands of years.

Arthur, a stranger with a false story and a system whispering impossible ambitions into his skull, was being carried into its shadow.

He had thought they might place him in a guest chamber, perhaps under guard. Instead, after entering through the heavy gates, two guards approached with faces as expressive as stone and led him down beneath the castle. The place they brought him to was not quite a dungeon, though it was not freedom either. It was a dry stone room with iron bars, clean enough not to insult him, cold enough to remind him that he was not a guest. There were no chains on the wall, no torture rack, no filth. Dry straw had been placed in one corner. A kindness, perhaps. Or merely northern practicality.

No one beat him.

No one threatened him.

That was almost more unsettling.

Soon after, an old man entered the passage beyond the bars. He wore a maester’s chain around his neck and carried parchment and a quill. His face was gentle, but his eyes were not lazy. This was Maester Luwin. Arthur recognized the type immediately. A kind man could still dissect a lie if given enough time.

The questioning began politely.

That made it worse.

Maester Luwin asked about his origin, his ship, the ports across the Narrow Sea, the goods carried aboard, the pirate flag, the route taken, the weather, the crew, the customs of the places Arthur claimed to have seen. His voice never rose. He never accused Arthur of lying. He simply pressed, again and again, touching every weak point in the story like a man checking the seams of a cracked cup.

Arthur answered as best he could. He mixed fragments of memory with invention and fear. A merchant ship. Spices, cloth, ironware. A black sail marked by a skull, though he kept the details vague enough for fear to excuse them. Pirates did not usually introduce themselves with proper heraldry before slaughtering sailors. He let confusion show, but not too much. Survivors remembered strange things and forgot obvious ones. That was useful.

By the time Luwin finished writing, Arthur’s back was damp beneath his clothes.

The maester nodded, said nothing more, and left.

Arthur remained alone.

The wait lasted three days.

No one came to question him again. Bread and water arrived on time. The room stayed cold, but not unbearable. Arthur used the time well, because a man had to do something while waiting to learn if he would be hanged, imprisoned, or merely watched until he became useful. He studied the system panel, opened and closed the troop list, counted the cost of basic Battanian recruits, and considered every possible path ahead.

Unifying Westeros was absurd.

Before a man conquered kingdoms, he needed the right to walk through a gate without being stopped by guards.

Arthur checked the store again and again. Lords and followers remained far beyond his reach. Soldiers were possible, but recruiting men from nothing would raise questions. A foreigner of uncertain origin suddenly surrounded by armed warriors was the sort of thing that made lords sharpen axes. He needed coin. He needed a name. He needed people to see him as useful before they saw him as dangerous.

On the morning of the fourth day, the iron bars opened.

The guard at the door looked at him without interest.

”You may go.”

Arthur stood slowly. His shoulders ached from sleeping badly, and his legs felt stiff from confinement. He followed the guard out and stepped into the courtyard of Winterfell. The sunlight struck the snow and reflected upward, bright enough to hurt his eyes. The air smelled of ice, smoke, horses, and wet wool. It was not pleasant. It was real. After three days behind bars, that was enough.

”Lord Stark has given his order,” the guard said. ”Until your identity is confirmed, you are not to leave the lands under Winterfell’s protection. If you run, you will be treated as a spy.”

Arthur nodded.

It was not a pardon.

It was a leash.

Still, a leash was better than a noose.

He did not remain long in the castle. Winterfell was the heart of the North, and hearts had eyes. Too many people served too many masters. Instead, he followed the road down toward Wintertown, the settlement that clung to Winterfell like a smaller, rougher shadow.

It was not the height of winter, so the place was not swollen with the full population that gathered there during the worst cold. Even so, there was life in it. Wooden stalls lined the streets. Traders shouted over one another. Hunters displayed wolf pelts, bear skins, salted meat, rough iron tools, clay jugs, and anything else men needed when the world tried to freeze them.

Most of the people wore heavy furs. Their faces were hard, their speech blunt, their movements practical. Mountain clansmen passed through with their own accents and customs, looking at everyone as if measuring whether they could be robbed or trusted. Sometimes both.

Arthur walked through the market slowly, listening more than speaking. His eyes eventually settled on a fur stall. The owner was a lean northerner with a wind-cut face and a voice strong enough to compete with the whole street.

”Fine wolf skins! Bear pelts! Cloaks thick enough to shame the cold itself!”

Arthur approached and ran a hand over one of the pelts. The fur was coarse but warm. Useful.

”Master Barro,” he said, having heard the name shouted twice already, ”business looks good. Do you need another pair of hands?”

The blue panel flickered at the edge of his vision.

Pale golden words appeared.

[Quest Triggered: Hunter’s Order]

Content: Collect 10 complete animal skins for fur merchant Barro. Wolf, deer, or boar.

Reward: 100 dinars, 100 experience.

Status: 0/10

Arthur kept his expression calm.

So that was how it worked. The system did not throw tasks at him from the sky like a drunken god. He had to touch the world, speak to people, find needs, and turn them into opportunities. Good. That was easier to understand than fate. Less dramatic too, which made it more trustworthy.

He bought a skinning knife from Barro for a handful of copper pennies, checked the axe at his waist, and adjusted the small shield on his arm.

The system had not given him a kingdom.

It had given him errands.

A man had to begin somewhere.
