The Shadow of Great Britain

Chapter 1001: Chapter 59: Victor’s Big List

Today, the Breaux Detective Agency was much noisier than usual. This recently established detective office often doesn’t receive more than a few clients in a day, yet today it’s overcrowded.

The bank manager and the goldsmith shop owner angrily looked at the crowd filling the hallway and the carriages blocking the entrance, their faces growing noticeably darker. They planned to go upstairs to argue with Victor, as if this continues, Victor’s detective agency might indeed have endless work, but their bank business and gold and silver jewelry business would be affected.

The bank manager and the goldsmith squeezed through a gap in the crowded hallway, but just as they intended to point at Victor’s Nose and scream, they suddenly realized the guests visiting the detective agency today seemed to have unusual identities.

Dark black, uniforms with copper buttons, high boots reaching the knee, flat-top military kepi hats with visors, prominently unique hat insignia, plus handcuffs and whistles strapped to the waist.

This outfit, a real Parisian would immediately recognize what they do.

These guys are not to be messed with!

Sure enough, before the bank manager and goldsmith could speak, the police chief at the door glared at them viciously: “What are you doing? Rushing in so eagerly, could you be Royalists? How about we go to the station for a chat together?”

The bank manager and goldsmith were sweating all over, hurriedly took off their hats and said awkwardly: “Turns out it’s a public investigation, we thought some thugs had come to make trouble, surrounding Mr. Victor’s agency, so we intended to help out.”

“If you have nothing to do, get out! We haven’t been able to sleep well for days, trying to catch assassins. If you stay here any longer, I’ll take you both back to report.”

Upon hearing this, the bank manager and goldsmith fled the scene as if granted amnesty.

The police chief glanced in their leaving direction, lit up a cigarette and said to his men: “Send two people to follow them. Although cowardly ones like these shouldn’t dare mix with Royalists, better safe than sorry, what if they are indeed here to gather intelligence for the Royalists, then we’d be negligent.”

“Understood, Chief.”

The young policeman, having received orders, hastily exchanged coats with his plainclothes companion and trotted downstairs.

Seeing the young policeman walk away, the police chief winked at the old pal leaning against the wall.

The old policeman sighed with some displeasure: “Still not trusting the kid, do you think he could be undercover?”

“Who can really tell in matters like these?” The police chief muttered: “Days of investigation, and all we’ve caught are irrelevant people, while the real assassins remain at large. If the Royalists don’t have an inside man, I wouldn’t believe it.”

“Alright then.” The old policeman rubbed his face: “I pray to God that this kid is indeed an inside man for the Royalists. If we don’t find any clues soon, Great Paris Police Hall could be completely upended by Chief Jusco.”

“Rudy, cut the crap, do you think the past few days have been easy for me? I’m the one facing the pressure from Chief Jusco, not you. Get to work!”

Named Rudy, the old policeman, having been reprimanded, merely curled his lip, then walked downstairs without saying a word.

Rudy had just reached the first floor when he saw an English gentleman leaning on a cane, standing outside, scrutinizing the armed carriages of the Great Paris Police Hall.

Arthur saw his uniform and couldn’t help but laugh: “Paris police uniforms are quite different from London’s.”

Frustrated, Rudy casually replied: “Uniform differences are the least of it. I’ve heard from colleagues who’ve been to London say the London police spend most of their time not catching thieves or subduing robbers, but giving directions. Their work is much easier than ours.”

Arthur laughed and asked: “Could you tell me how to get to the Breaux Detective Agency?”

Upon hearing this, Rudy snorted and walked away: “Paris police don’t provide direction services. Sir, if you want to go somewhere, I’d advise you to inquire in London first before coming to Paris.”

Arthur shrugged slightly as he watched Rudy walk away: “Now I finally understand why Paris police have such a bad reputation.”

Arthur went upstairs, yet before he could enter the door, he was stopped by the policeman at the staircase.

Before he could properly explain his intent, the policeman promptly issued an eviction order.

“Sir, please go back. The agency doesn’t have time to accommodate other clients today.”

Arthur took off his hat and said: “I think you may be mistaken, I’m not a client, I’m here to work.”

“Oh?”

The policeman glanced over Arthur’s attire: “Dressed so conspicuously, walking like a peacock displaying its tail, and you tell me you’re not here to sell yourself but are a detective? Ha! Although Victor left the Security Department nearly a year ago, I’m surprised his hiring standards remain humorously unchanged.”

Arthur, hearing this, didn’t get annoyed, merely smiled and replied: “Officer, it seems your observation wasn’t thorough. Those who truly make a living selling themselves usually dress quite properly, if they were easily seen through, only the Guillotine awaits them.”

The policeman sneered: “Really? Seems you know them well. What do they generally wear when you frequent them?”
