The Shadow of Great Britain

Indeed, his workload was much greater than that of a typical priest; a single day in Old Nicol would equate to several weeks in Westminster, so I think his occasional complaints were entirely understandable.

Even though he was an Angel Envoy, he was, after all, still temperamental.”

Lionel couldn’t help but shake his head upon hearing this, “I thought the poverty-stricken Jewish community in London was bad enough; I didn’t realize there were worse places.”

“Yes!

London is always full of surprises.”

Arthur chuckled self-deprecatingly, “Whenever I discover an area that’s bad enough, London always wraps its arm around my shoulder and tells me, ‘hey!

You must be new here?

Stop damn marveling because the worse is yet to come!’”

Agares, resting his hand on Arthur’s shoulder, spoke up, “Arthur, I don’t recall ever changing my name to London.

Besides, I’m not that familiar with London; my knowledge is genuinely authentic about Jerusalem.”

Lionel asked, “You just mentioned that the attacks on the police by the citizens are mutual.

Can you talk about the following parts?”

Arthur continued after pouring some more tea, “It’s nothing major; just don’t spread it around.

Or even if you do, it won’t make much of a difference because the impactful Scotland Yard has pretty much handled it already.”

“Handled it means?

Handling the police?”

“Of course.”

Arthur raised an eyebrow, “Lionel, although our internals are not clean, we still have clear regulations.

And I admit, the reason for the attacks on Fleet Street is that, indeed, there are some scumbags within our officer ranks.

Scotland Yard fires nearly a hundred employees each year, and Nicol’s Kingsland Road station even fired up to six employees last year.

Last year, an incident on Nicol Street utterly embarrassed me; a police officer entered a pub on Nicol Street while on duty, got drunk, and beat up a child for staring at him.

Moreover, he gave a contradictory account of the incident in court, which shamed the entire Tower Hamlets police division.

Police Superintendent Clyde, who was attending the trial, furiously ordered him to shut up and sit down.

As soon as the trial ended, he immediately announced the dismissal decision.”

Lionel curiously asked, “How do you know so much about this?

Were you there at the scene?”

Arthur nodded slightly, “I was in the public gallery.”

Lionel, smiling, asked, “So you weren’t angry then?”

“Of course not, or even if I was, I wouldn’t burst out in court.” Arthur, lifting his white porcelain teacup to clink with Lionel, spoke calmly, “I learned that from you, Lionel.

Remember?

The time I went to buy a house.”

Lionel’s eyes squinted into a line as he smiled, “So you’re saying…”

Arthur sipped his tea gently, “Yes, I just had a quiet talk with Police Superintendent Clyde at Whitehall 4 afterward”

“Hahaha.” Lionel, trying to hold back his laughter, asked, “What did you say?”

Arthur massaged his temples, “Let me think; I believe I told Police Superintendent Clyde that a restless anxiety was brewing internally at Scotland Yard.

Although I didn’t want to criticize his work, the attention from Parliament and public opinion on local security and police ineffectiveness seemed to be increasing.

This led Scotland Yard colleagues to start questioning his reliability, but as the Police Superintendent managing both Greenwich and Tower Hamlets, I still trusted him.

However, although I trust his capabilities and highly recognize the work he has achieved so far, considering the magistrate’s long-standing hostile attitude towards Scotland Yard, I understand that the local work is not easy.

So, if he feels overwhelmed, there’s no need to push himself too hard.

Gold shines no matter where it goes, and I’m willing to subtly convey his application for a transfer to a more suitable department to Director Rowan on his behalf.”

Lionel burst out laughing so hard that tears came: “Arthur, I admit I might have inspired you in the first half, but most of this latter part must be your own realization; you have the knack, no need to put all the ‘credit’ on my head.”

Arthur finished the last bit of tea, smiling back, “Lionel, you’re too modest.”

The Red Devil resting his hand on Arthur’s shoulder bit into a sugarcane, chewed twice, and spat out a mouthful of pulp, “Arthur, the modest one is you.

You rascal, you were born to make deals with the devil.

Keep it up; I see great potential in you.”

Lionel pulled out a handkerchief to wipe the tears of laughter from his eyes, he pursued further, “So, was Police Superintendent Clyde inspired after this talk?”

Arthur nodded lightly, “Very inspired.

Incidentally, due to his outstanding performance over the past year, Police Superintendent Clyde was recently promoted to Police Commissioner.

Now he, like me, bears a St.

Edward’s Crown Badge on his shoulder.

Just as I mentioned, Police Superintendent Clyde is a very capable officer, and all this is what he deserves.

Tower Hamlets’ loss is significant,

but fortunately, we still have excellent police commanders like the newly appointed Police Superintendent Jones in the area, or Police Chief Ledley at Whitechapel station.

Even Kingsland Road station, which I’ve always criticized, also has many officers with noble moral qualities and a sense of social responsibility.

From what I know, the relations between the officers of Kingsland Road and the residents of Old Nicol are rather complicated.”
