55: Chapter 16: Conversation in the Detention Room 55: Chapter 16: Conversation in the Detention Room Superintendent Brayden Jones hurried into the district police station.

As soon as he stepped through the main entrance, he bumped into a junior officer holding some documents.

“Superintendent Jones, what brings you here?

The district staff meeting isn’t until tomorrow, did you get the dates mixed up?”

Upon hearing this, Jones stopped in his tracks and squeezed out a smile, “No.

The custody cells at my station are nearly full, so I planned to clear out the suspects and transfer them all together to the Magistrates’ Court.

It just so happened that I was passing by the district station today, so I thought I’d check if you have any suspects here.

If so, I might as well take them with me.”

The junior officer said with a smile, “Superintendent Jones, you really are thoughtful.

I won’t hide it from you; we just arrested someone this morning, and he’s sitting inside right now.”

“Good, gather his charging documents and hand them over to me.”

“No problem, his case is pretty straightforward.

Just wait here for a moment; I’ll draft his case report right now.”

“Alright, go ahead with that.

I’ll go and cuff him in the back, and once you’re done, I’ll take him away directly.”

As Jones said this, he was about to stride towards the custody room, but before he could take a step, he suddenly remembered something.

He quickly called out to the junior officer who was about to draft the documents, “Oh, Anthony, is Superintendent Hastings here today?”

“The Superintendent?

If you’re looking for him, it might not be the best time.

He just left with Tom and Tony not long ago and specifically instructed us that he might not return until the afternoon.”

Jones asked, “What did he go out for?”

“That, I’m not sure of.

Oh, right, they were also accompanied by a child around eight or nine years old, whom Officer Tom has just adopted.

Could it be that they went to handle the adoption paperwork?”

“Does handling adoption procedures require three people?”

“That’s a good point, I really don’t know then.

Could it be that they went to gather information about Fred?

Recently, the Superintendent has been giving classes to Tom and Tony daily, saying they are going to be detectives specializing in case investigations.

Speaking of which, Superintendent Jones, have you found any leads on Fred in your patrol area recently?

In tomorrow’s meeting, the Superintendent might ask this question, so you better prepare early.”

Upon hearing this, Jones just pinched his chin and said helplessly, “Fred isn’t so easy to track down.

According to what the pickpockets say, it seems like that old guy hasn’t shown his face for two or three years now; who knows what he’s been up to—he might even be dead for all we know.

The gangs that are committing crimes under ‘Fred’s’ name might just be like those workers who rebel under the banner of ‘General Lud.’ Maybe they just want to use Fred’s name to intimidate their rivals.”

“Exactly how it is, nobody really knows.

But you still have to give the Superintendent an explanation.

Even if there’s no progress with Fred’s case, you still need to produce some tangible results; otherwise, it won’t be good when reporting back.”

“Thanks for the reminder,” Jones said, pulling a candy from his pocket and tossing it over, “You’ve worked hard today; I’m off to find the suspect in the custody room.”

The junior officer caught the candy and cheerfully said, “Just wait two more minutes, the charging documents will be ready soon.”

Jones nodded and then walked towards the custody room.

The door to the custody room opened, revealing rows of small compartments separated by iron bars, each with very simple furnishings.

A barrel used to contain excrement, a wooden plank fixed to the wall with two iron chains, which turned into a seat by removing the thin blanket and turned back into a bed with the blanket on.

At this time, there was only one suspect detained here, thus saving Jones the effort of looking for people.

First, he glanced behind him, made sure no one was following, then slowly closed the door and ambled over to the suspect with arms crossed.

“Fred, didn’t I tell you?

At 7:30 AM, cause a scene at Carlson’s store on Thames River Avenue No.

85.

At that time, my officers should be patrolling right there, they would arrest you, and then I would take you to the Magistrates’ Court for a fast-track trial procedure.

Two days later, you would appear as you wished in the old ship’s prison.

What were you thinking, letting yourself get caught and brought to the district police station?”

The suspect was squatting on the ground, idly drawing circles with straw, not even lifting his head to look at Jones, just humming response.

“Damn it, how was I supposed to know that the passing patrol officer wasn’t one of your scruffy men?

Look at this lousy idea you came up with, just to catch a charge of disrupting public order.

My ass has been shown off by people, why don’t you consider my loss?”

Jones’s voice carried a hint of anger, “Didn’t I teach you how to identify patrol officers?

Look at the numerals on their epaulets; only those starting with RG2 are my men.

You idiot, do you know Hastings, the Police Superintendent, is searching for you worldwide?

And what are you doing?

You’ve delivered yourself right into his prison.”

Upon hearing this, Fred burst out laughing, “Can’t help it, the world is sometimes just this humorous.

He might never expect that the Fred he wants to catch is actually locked up in his prison.”

Jones angrily said, “You still can laugh?

Luckily, we swapped your identity six months ago, or else you’d be totally exposed by now!

Do you know what the consequences of being exposed would be?

You’d be hanged on the gallows!”

Fred lifted his head, raising his eyebrows, “You’re trying to scare me?

A young rookie just replaced Wilcox, and you dare talk to me like this?

You should really ask him what role I used to have in the Army?

If I hadn’t messed up back then, I wouldn’t have been dishonorably discharged so early.

If I hadn’t been discharged, maybe I would be working in the Greater London Police Department right now.

Wilcox could become Chief of Police, what should I have become?

A Police Superintendent?”

Jones sneered, “Wilcox?

He’s already dead, where do you expect me to find him to ask?”

“Right, I certainly know he’s dead.”

Fred stood up, his hands gripping the iron bars and pulling hard outward, a ghastly scream echoed from the wrought iron as he poked his head out.

His head pressed against Jones’s forehead, his enlarged eyes seeming to devour Jones whole, “I’m not God, so I can’t bring Wilcox up here for you to question.

But, I can send you down there.”

Jones’s forehead was covered in cold sweat, his peripheral vision catching sight of the twisted bars of the cell, his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.

As the two were at a stalemate, the voice of a junior officer resonated outside the cell.

“Chief Jones, haven’t you brought him out yet?

I’m about to draft the indictment over here.”

Jones took a step back, he reached out and patted Fred’s shoulder, “Do a good job once you’re in, and you might also avoid some heat from Superintendent Hastings.

It’s beneficial for you and for us.”

Fred’s mouth curled into a scornful smile, and he extended his hands out.

“Come on, handcuff me.”
