The Shadow of Great Britain

50: Chapter 12 Things Went Bad 50: Chapter 12 Things Went Bad Arthur looked at Faraday standing in front of him, feeling the other’s amiable and gentle demeanor, along with that familiar face.

Arthur remained silent for a while, suddenly feeling that perhaps it was better to have seen him in textbooks.

Even though Arthur thought his physics was fairly good, and his memory was in a relatively excellent range.

But what if, what if he remembered the theorem incorrectly?

Wouldn’t that leave him stigmatized for eternity?

Faraday, noticing that Arthur had been silent for a long time, thought his sudden arrival had drawn too much attention from the audience, thus frightening the science-loving Scotland Yard officer.

In the Royal Society, Faraday often encountered scientists who disliked attracting attention.

Therefore, he naturally classified Arthur as one of their kind.

Faraday, feeling embarrassed, leaned forward to apologize, “Officer, I did not mean to interrupt your discussion with your friends.

However, I think the memory method you mentioned just now seems really suitable for helping students who are new to the field of electrodynamics.

If you are embarrassed to share it publicly, we can talk more about it after the lecture.”

Before Arthur could respond, Eld sitting beside him was not happy.

This young man noticed that all the ladies in the room were focusing their attention on the three of them.

Hormones surged to the limit, and Eld suddenly stood up and addressed Faraday.

“Mr.

Faraday, my friend here is shy and not good at speaking.

It would be better if you ask me your question.”

Faraday, seeing that Eld was willing to volunteer, happily shook his hand, “Then, could you please explain what exactly is the right hand matter you just mentioned?”

“That’s simple.

This…

right hand…

um…

right hand…

sigh…”

Perhaps standing up too abruptly had caused a lack of oxygen in Eld’s blood, leaving his mind blank; not to mention recapitulating the knowledge Arthur had passed on, he couldn’t even utter a complete sentence.

Mister Eld stuttered and struggled for a long time, when suddenly a spark of inspiration flashed through his mind.

He grabbed Faraday’s right hand and brought it close to his eyes, studying it carefully for a while before slowly speaking.

“Uh…

Mr.

Faraday, your right hand’s line of wisdom…”

As soon as Eld spoke these words, bursts of laughter exploded throughout the venue, filling the air with a joyful atmosphere.

Dignified ladies took up their fans, covering their mouths while their eyes crinkled to slits with laughter.

As for the gentlemen, they had far less decorum; laughing so hard they gasped for air, clutching their stomachs, unable to straighten their backs.

And that gentleman who graduated from Cambridge sitting behind Arthur was laughing while slapping the back of his chair, intermittently crying out.

“No…

No mistake.

That’s how they teach at Oxford.”

Seeing this, Arthur couldn’t help but cover his face with one hand, “Eld, if you don’t know, you don’t know; why pretend?”

Eld turned pale, his forehead sweaty from nervousness, and he muttered lowly, “Arthur, Arthur!

Damn it, help me out here!”

With things having escalated to this point, Arthur had no choice but to step in.

He stood up and began to explain: “Mr.

Faraday, I…

”

Faraday, too, was somewhat bewildered by the comedic scene Eld had created.

Seeing Arthur stand up, his first reaction was to hesitate and ask, “You’re not going to read my palm lines too, are you?”

Before Arthur could speak, Eld, eager to escape the awkwardness, interjected, “Mr.

Faraday, there’s no need to trouble Arthur with such a trivial matter; I have already examined them for you, and your fate line is also very good.”

This time, the laughter in the hall was enough to host a concert.

The usually good-tempered Arthur, upon hearing this, finally couldn’t help but glower at Eld, muttering to him in a low voice.

“What does this have to do with you?

Shut your mouth now!”

Eld quickly shut up, knowing that if he spoke a couple more sentences, his reputation in the Royal Society lecture hall would be completely destroyed from today onwards.

Arthur took a deep breath and quickly adjusted his emotions.

He began, “Mr.

Faraday, I use my right hand to determine the direction of electricity.

Of course, you used a coil in your second experiment, so you can also use…”

Faraday listened to this and nodded repeatedly, “That’s right, the coil can be used with Ampere’s Rule, the right-hand rule.

But the right-hand rule you just mentioned seems different from the right-hand spiral rule.”

Arthur, although maintaining the composure and calm characteristic of a Scotland Yard officer, couldn’t help but his Red Devil already began to laugh uncontrollably.

“Arthur, what’s wrong with you?

Look at your neck, you’re sweating.

Don’t you know the right-hand spiral rule?

It was proposed by the Frenchman Andre Ampere in 1820.

If you don’t know it, I could teach you.

One soul, reasonably priced and affordable.”

Though Agares saw Arthur sweating, he clearly guessed Arthur’s thoughts wrong.

Arthur wasn’t unfamiliar with the right-hand spiral rule, but what surprised him was—had Ampere already proposed it?

Arthur pondered a moment and cautiously said, “I was also inspired by Ampere’s Rule, so I thought of using left and right hands for judgment.

The method of the right-hand rule is to make the thumb perpendicular to the other four fingers, and all should be on the same plane as the palm.

Then, place your right hand into the magnetic field, let the magnetic lines pass perpendicularly through the palm, with the thumb pointing in the direction the conductor moves, and then the direction pointed by the other four fingers will be the direction of the induced current.”

Faraday heard this and immediately extended his fingers to gesture on his own, and soon, his deeply furrowed brow suddenly smoothed out.

He joyfully laughed, “It indeed works this way!”

With Faraday’s words, the laughter of the gentlemen and ladies present gradually faded, and they began stretching out their right hands to each other.

Before long, a buzz arose in the hall.

“A genius summary.”

“Just as Mr.

Faraday said, it’s really suitable for beginners to remember.”

“Officer, what about the left-hand rule then?”

As Faraday heard the audience already helping him inquire, he remained silent, just smiling and looking towards Arthur.

Arthur understood the meaning in Faraday’s eyes.

He stretched out his left hand and demonstrated, “The use of the left-hand rule is similar to the right-hand, but the difference is, it’s used to determine force, not current.

Ladies and gentlemen, please extend your left hand with the thumb perpendicular to the other four fingers, let the magnetic lines enter through the palm, the fingers pointing toward the direction of the current, then the thumb points towards Ampere’s force, the force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.

If the moving charge is positive, the direction the thumb points can also be considered the direction of Lorentz Force, and if the charge is negative the opposite direction of the thumb points towards Lorentz Force.”

Arthur finished speaking and breathed a slight sigh of relief.

Right or wrong didn’t matter to him anymore, anyway, a master scientist like Faraday would certainly correct any mistake, and to get Eld out of trouble, today he had gone all out.

Just as he was about to sit down, Arthur suddenly realized that the atmosphere in the hall was a bit off.

The gentlemen and ladies present neither reached out their hands to gesture as before nor burst into laughter, but were all staring blankly at him.

Just when Arthur was utterly confused, Faraday spoke.

He apologized to Arthur asking, “Please forgive my ignorance, but may I boldly ask you, what is Lorentz Force?”

Arthur, upon hearing this, felt his pupils contract and thought to himself, “It’s gone terribly wrong.”
