Necromancer: Kingdom Building with My Legion of Undead Knights

The castle had become a different place. The quiet, hollow silence that had once filled its halls was gone, replaced by the constant hum of activity.

It now felt like a busy, productive work section, which it was now. Darion wasn’t as comfortable as he had been before, but at least he was not bored.

He could be entertained all day, watching the transformation unfold, seeing the workers work, hearing the sounds of creation replacing the sounds of decay.

At night, the workers returned to their working place, which was the tents they had set up outside. Darion had even offered that they slept inside the castle, but they had refused.

They said they were used to sleeping outdoors, that the tents were comfortable enough, and that they didn’t want to get in the way of the castle’s daily routines. Darion had respected their decision.

Now workers moved through the corridors, their boots heavy on the worn floors, their voices low as they coordinated their efforts.

Dust drifted through the air like a fine mist, settling on every surface, coating the furniture and the walls. The smell of fresh timber and stone dust mingled with the familiar scent of the old castle, creating something new.

Breakfast was louder now. The great hall, once a quiet space where Darion, Garren, and Seren ate in comfortable silence, was now filled with the sound of workers.

They sat beside their tents, their plates piled high with bread and cheese, their voices rising and falling as they discussed the day’s work.

They had brought pots and lots of food supplies to last through the rebuilding, so all they did was cook in the morning and evening. Well, at least Darion wouldn’t be feeding them, that was one less expense to worry about.

Some of them were young, their faces fresh and eager. Others were older, their hands calloused, their eyes carrying the weight of years of labor. They ate quickly, efficiently, their bodies fueled for the work ahead.

Darion sat at the head of the table, his plate in front of him, his mind already turning to the day’s tasks.

He had grown used to the noise, the chaos, the constant motion. It had been jarring at first, a disruption to the routine he had established. But now it felt natural, a sign of progress, a symbol of the barony’s recovery.

He finished his breakfast and stood, leaving the hall behind.

The corridors were already busy, workers moving in every direction, their arms full of tools and materials.

Darion walked through them, his steps steady, his eyes scanning the progress. He started each day this way now, checking on the work before moving on to his other duties.

The roofs were nearly done. Ghan had made quick work of the most urgent repairs, his crew working tirelessly to replace the rotting timber and patch the leaking sections.

The scaffolding that had surrounded the castle’s upper floors was beginning to come down, revealing the clean lines of the new roof. It was a satisfying sight, a tangible reminder of the progress that had been made.

Darion climbed the stairs to the upper floors, his boots echoing on the worn stone.

The workers nodded to him as he passed, their faces respectful but focused. They had grown used to his presence, his daily inspections. He was not a distant Baron, content to let the work happen without his involvement. He was present, invested, and they respected that.

He reached the top floor and stepped out onto the scaffolding.

The view was breathtaking: the entire barony seemingly spread out before him, the fields green and vibrant, the distant forests dark and mysterious.

He could see the workers on the roof, their movements precise, their voices carrying in the crisp morning air. He watched them for a moment, feeling a sense of pride in the work being done.

The knights trained nearby, their drills mixing with the sounds of hammering and sawing.

They did their training sessions in the courtyard, the only space large enough to accommodate both their practice and the construction.

The clash of swords and the shouts of the trainers echoed off the castle walls, blending with the rhythmic sounds of the work.

Darion stopped to watch them for a moment. They had come a long way, these knights. When he had first arrived, they had been broken, their spirits crushed by years of neglect and failure. Now they were strong, confident, and disciplined.

They moved with determination, their weapons flashing in the morning light. They were becoming what he had always known they could be.

He smiled and continued on his way.

Seren was in the courtyard, training the archers. They stood in a loose formation, their bows raised, their eyes fixed on the targets. She moved among them, her voice calm and steady, correcting their postures, adjusting their aims. She was a natural leader, her presence commanding without being overbearing.

But Darion noticed that she was also drawn to the construction.

Her eyes would drift toward the workers, her attention wandering from the archers to the progress being made. She had become interested in the process, fascinated by the transformation of the castle. She asked questions, learned the names of the tools, and watched the techniques with genuine curiosity.

Darion approached her between rounds. ”Keeping an eye on the work?”

She smiled. ”It’s hard not to. The castle is changing so quickly. Every day, something new is completed.”

He nodded. ”It’s exciting. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”

She looked at him, her eyes thoughtful. ”You’ve done a lot here, Darion. More than anyone could have expected.”

He shrugged. ”I’m just doing what needs to be done.”

Darion found Ghan pointing to a worker later. The mason was giving instructions, his hands moving as he described the next phase of the project.

”How’s it going?” Darion asked.

Ghan looked up. ”Well. The timber we ordered arrived this morning. The stone should be here soon. We’re on schedule.”

Darion nodded. ”Good. Keep me updated.”

Ghan nodded and returned to his work. It seemed he had ordered extra materials that were needed, more than the ones he hadn’t brought initially. He had planned ahead, anticipating the unexpected issues that always arose during a renovation.
