Chapter 660: Chapter 660 Challenge Rules_1

The winner lives, the loser dies!

Such are the rules of the Battle Beast Arena!

This place is cruel, but it is precisely because of this that it sharpens a person the most!

All ten of the Sword King Sect’s core disciples had experienced the brutal life-and-death battles of the Battle Beast Arena and ultimately survived.

Therefore, not only was their cultivation level powerful, their combat experience was equally terrifying!

Ling Xiao’s heart was somewhat excited.

Although the four-faction martial arts competition was important, it was, after all, just a sparring match. Where could it compare to a life-and-death battle in honing a person’s combat skills?

He now very much wanted to enter the fray and test himself, considering the four-faction martial arts competition wasn’t until tomorrow. Even if he returned late, it wouldn’t matter.

”Liu Cang, if one wishes to participate in a battle in the Battle Beast Arena, what should they do?”

Ling Xiao asked.

”It’s simple; if you are willing, you can just put your name forward. There’s someone over there who specifically handles this kind of matter,” Liu Cang replied, pointing to a small house among the stepped seating of the arena.

”And the rules?”

Ling Xiao continued.

”The rules are quite straightforward. As long as you meet the requirements, you can join the battle. There are only two rules:

First, your cultivation level must be equal to or below that of the battle beasts, slaves, or death row inmates. This should be understandable, right? It’s not about entering the stage to bully the weak; and

Second, each challenge requires a minimum deposit of ten thousand low-grade spirit stones. If you win, you can obtain more than ten times the return, but if you lose, you die, and your belongings are not returned.”

”A minimum of ten thousand? So, it’s possible to deposit more?”

”Of course, the minimum is ten thousand, up to a maximum of one hundred thousand.”

Liu Cang answered.

These rules were indeed straightforward.

Just like the fights in the jianghu, if you want to gain more, you have to take on greater risks. This suited Ling Xiao just fine.

”Gentlemen, please take a seat here; there’s no way to walk further forward. The closer the seats are to the arena, the more dangerous they become. Moreover, a powerful force prevents passage. Without sufficient strength, you can’t get through,” Liu Cang said as they reached the middle section. ”And those seats up front require a fee of over ten thousand low-grade spirit stones, which is simply not worth it.”

Although he appeared to be considering Ling Xiao and the others’ well-being, his tone couldn’t help but carry a hint of condescension.

It was because the front three rows in the Battle Beast Arena were usually seated by the cream of the Sword King Sect’s inner sect disciples. Although Ling Xiao and the others were Moon Hua Sect’s core disciples, in Liu Cang’s view, they probably didn’t even compare to their Sword King Sect’s ordinary inner sect disciples.

”Hmph, looking down on us, huh? Then you just stay here,” Leng Hao replied, unable to listen any longer. He snorted coldly, lifted his foot, and continued walking forward, as the area behind was mostly crowded, but the first three rows of seats were comparatively empty and more comfortable to sit in.

”Liu Cang, thank you for leading us here. Here’s a little token of appreciation; we won’t need your company any longer,” Ling Xiao said casually, tossing out a hundred low-grade spirit stones as a reward before walking forward with the other three.

”Let’s sit in the third row; the view is the best there, even better than the front two rows,” he said as he walked.

”Sure!”

The other three naturally had no objections. Dai Yuling and Leng Hao had long regarded Ling Xiao’s word as paramount, and Lan Yu’er had gradually begun to see Ling Xiao as her mainstay. Naturally, they would listen to him.

”Hmph, a bunch of presumptuous people!”

Liu Cang snorted coldly, then stood there, waiting to see the four people make a fool of themselves.

However, to his utter amazement, Ling Xiao and the other three, when faced with that invisible wall of air, didn’t show the slightest hint of difficulty; they walked to the third row as if strolling in a courtyard and then sat down.

”These guys really aren’t simple! It seems that the Core Disciples of the Moon Hua Sect aren’t all trash after all.”

Liu Cang had always heard his Senior Brothers say how useless and incompetent the disciples of the Moon Hua Sect were, but today’s observation didn’t entirely fit that description.

He couldn’t help but develop some doubts regarding the discussions he had heard before.

As Ling Xiao and the others took their seats, a battle in the Battle Beast Arena had just ended, and what elicited people’s sighs was the sight of the challenger’s head being lopped off by a prisoner’s sword.

For each battle this prisoner won, he would receive some gold as a reward, and after winning a hundred battles, he would be granted his freedom.

It was the same for slaves.

Of course, the Monster Beasts and Ferocious Beasts were unlucky — unless they died in battle, they would have to face those grim and fierce challengers at any time.

Watching this bloody scene, as a Martial Artist, naturally there was nothing unsettling about it.

If a Martial Artist couldn’t even get used to blood and death, then he could only be considered worthless.

In the stands, cheers and curses interwove into a cacophony.

No one cared about the life or death of the challenger.

The cheers were simply because they found it thrilling, exhilarating!

The curses were because they lost money, not because they saw someone die!

This was the nature of beast fighting — not only could one earn Spirit Stone rewards for winning, but it might also be possible to break through one’s limitations!

Therefore, many Martial Artists often chose opponents that were not absolutely certain to be defeated because that would mean no improvement; however, this also meant a greater chance of death.

”Senior Brother Ling, when you just asked Liu Cang about beast fighting, were you planning to issue a challenge?”

Leng Hao asked curiously after they sat down.

”Yes!”

Ling Xiao indeed had this intention.

”Then do you plan to challenge a Ferocious Beast, a prisoner, or a slave?” Leng Hao pursued.

”A prisoner!”

Ling Xiao answered very clearly and decisively.

”The reason?”

Leng Hao asked, somewhat puzzled.

”First of all, I definitely won’t choose a slave. Slaves already have a tragic fate, and though I’m not a good person, I decidedly won’t lay hands on such pitiful people;

Next, I will not choose a beast kind because even though a Ferocious Beast of the same realm may usually be stronger than a Martial Artist, in a life and death challenge like this, humans can often unleash strength far more terrifying than usual. Choosing a human can better temper my Battle Techniques. As for Ferocious Beasts, though they possess some intelligence, they are still too foolish;

Lastly, a prisoner is different from a slave. Prisoners are placed here because they committed crimes warranting death. While they may also be pitiable, they largely deserve their fate, and I won’t feel any guilt in killing them.”

Although Ling Xiao wouldn’t go as far as becoming a savior, feeling compassion for the world, within his power, he tried to avoid harming the innocent and pitiful. This was his baseline as a human being.

He was a Martial Artist, but first and foremost, he was a person!

”Hahaha, it’s hilarious, to actually treat slaves as people. Those things are no different from livestock, from wild beasts. Killing them is just killing them; it’s truly ridiculous!”

No sooner had Ling Xiao finished speaking than a Martial Artist not far from them burst into derisive laughter. The people around him also nodded in agreement.

Ling Xiao and his companions turned their heads to look and noticed these people were all dressed in the clothing of the Sword King Sect.

Moreover, judging by the features of their attire, among the six people, three were Inner Sect Disciples, and the other three were Core Disciples.
