The Archmetamagician: The Weave Collapses Again

’Looks like I need to pick a good Feat, or just raise an ability score directly.’

Anser pondered for a moment, pulled up his character sheet, and touched the class option:

Increase Sorcerer level or choose a new class.

’Increase Sorcerer level.’

[Level Up: Level 8 Sorcerer!]

[Your true dragon power has increased: gold dragon power +1, silver dragon power +1]

[You have mastered a new Feat]

[You can learn one new spell, one Evocation spell, and one Metamagic option]

There were very few level-up prompts. The gains from reaching level 8 were not especially large. There were no class features or subclass features, but fortunately there was a new Feat and two points of true dragon power.

The upper limit of true dragon power at the wyrmling stage was 20. Since it could not be added to Charisma, he could only continue increasing Intelligence, bringing it to 18 and taking another step closer to multiclassing into an Intelligence-based class.

The best new Feat would ideally be one that increased an ability score, but the upper limit of ability growth from general Feats was only the mortal peak and could not break past 20, including normal ability score increases.

And he could not learn Epic Boon Feats yet, which was a little awkward.

He carefully flipped through the Feat list, passing over general Feats and Fighting Style Feats, ignoring the dimmed Dragonmark Feats and Epic Boon Feats, and fixed his gaze on a glowing unique Feat.

...

[Draconic Ability Score Increase]: racial Feat.

The potential in your draconic bloodline awakens, realizing part of your talent. One chosen ability score increases by 1, to a maximum of 30.

...

This Feat was easy to understand in plain terms: it increased an ability score. But unlike a normal ability score increase, it could only raise it by one point each time, though its upper limit was higher.

A score of 20 was the mortal peak, but he was a variant metallic dragon. In theory, he could realize his draconic gifts through training, which was why this Feat existed.

’It only raises it by one each time? That feels a bit wasteful. Will there be any special change once it goes above 20?’

After thinking for a moment, he still decided to give it a try.

Raising ability scores was something he would have to do sooner or later. His Feats were sufficient for the moment, so he might as well break through and see what happened. It could also activate the new adventure trait [Brilliant Soul].

After confirming the Feat, he began choosing spells.

There were not many fourth-circle Evocation spells, and in the end he chose Wall of Fire.

[Wall of Fire]: fourth-circle, Evocation spell.

Base casting range: 36 meters

Duration: Concentration, 1 minute

You create a wall of fire on a solid surface within range. Its shape can be freely adjusted, and it is opaque.

It can be a straight wall up to 18 meters long, 6 meters high, and 0.3 meters thick, or it can be ring-shaped or curved.

When the wall appears, every creature within 3 meters of the wall’s area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 5d8 (5–40) fire damage. On a successful save, it takes only half damage.

When you cast this spell, you can choose the burning direction of the wall. The damage area extends 3 meters, and any creature that enters or fails to leave that area in time continues to take 5d8 fire damage.

The other side of the wall does not deal damage.

Wall of Fire looked a little clumsy at first glance, but in specific situations it was extremely useful, and its area was not small.

For example, against a bulky enemy or one unable to move, he could completely surround it with rings of Wall of Fire, coil them around several times, and burn inward, forcibly cremating it.

There were many ways to use it. It all depended on the user’s own development.

The remaining fourth-circle spell was harder to choose: Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility, Raulothim’s Psychic Lance, Dominate Beast...

The base duration of Greater Invisibility was only one minute, which made it a little lacking in practicality.

Raulothim’s Psychic Lance dealt the relatively rare psychic damage and automatically sought its target, but Anser already had plenty of attack spells, so it did not seem like he was missing this one.

After thinking for a while, he chose Dimension Door.

It was a fourth-circle Conjuration spell with a base casting range of 150 meters. Its effect was to teleport yourself and one willing creature together to a location within range.

The key point was that you did not need to see the destination. A location you imagined, or one you could describe through distance and direction, would work—for example, 150 meters at a 45-degree angle to the northwest and upward.

However, if the destination was already occupied by another creature or an obstacle, he and the creature he carried would be repelled by space, take 4d6 (4–24) force damage, and the teleportation would fail.

With Anser’s physical toughness, even if it failed once or twice, it would not matter much. Whether for pursuit or escape, it was extremely practical.

As for the last Metamagic option, there was no need to choose, because only one remained for him to master.

[Careful Spell]: When you cast a spell that forces other creatures to make a saving throw, you can protect certain creatures from the spell’s danger.

Spend 1 sorcery point and choose a number of creatures up to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1).

The chosen creatures automatically succeed on the spell’s saving throw. If the spell would still deal half damage on a successful save, those creatures take no damage at all.

At only level 8, he had already mastered all ten Metamagic options. He fully deserved the title of Metamagic Master.

[Feat: Draconic Ability Score Increase (Charisma +1), spells: Dimension Door, Wall of Fire, Intelligence: +2, Metamagic: Careful Spell. Confirm?]

”Confirm!”

The calm Holrewen suddenly stirred with wind. The gale grew stronger and stronger, whistling in circles around the top of the black tower as Magic Power gathered, forming a funnel-shaped vortex of Magic Power.

Then the vast surge of Magic Power poured down from the tower top into the black tower, carrying Anser’s body as it teleported him into the astrological ritual array.

The spherical array, like a starry sky, released streak after streak of starlight, weaving a mysterious astral pattern across Anser’s body. Magic Power resonated, stirring ring after ring of rainbow halos.

Anser was completely unaware of all this, fully immersed in the metamorphosis of his soul. For the first time in his life, he saw his soul-body surrounded by countless points of starlight. It was like a universe, layered and clearly structured, not a chaotic mass.

At one moment, a brilliant spark of spiritual light was born at the center and spread outward, quickly illuminating the entire soul. It was not dazzlingly magnificent, but it was still bright and eye-catching.

Anser felt light and airy, with an indescribable sense of ease and comfort.

After a long while, the change stopped. He awoke from his absorption, and a trace of clear spiritual light flashed through his eyes.

’So this is the sublimation of the soul. It feels like... the openness and joy of fulfilling every ideal in life.’ He stretched lazily, feeling wonderfully comfortable.

Starlight filled the surroundings. He observed for a moment but found nothing. He only knew that this array had just been helping him stabilize his Magic Power and guard against interference from the outside world.

’No idea what it was guarding against. Devils, or the prying of powerful beings?’

He took one step, and his figure reappeared in the room at the top floor.

Pulling up his character sheet, he saw that the data on it had changed drastically.

His Hit Points had surged to 90, comparable to a monster’s Constitution.

His Magic Power had reached 95, giving him much greater staying power. If he only cast Magic Missile, he could fire it eighty or ninety times—more than enough to turn the werewolf leader into minced meat.

His Intelligence had risen to 18, making his thinking sharper. His memory, comprehension, logical reasoning, and spatial imagination had all improved noticeably.

If he took levels in Wizard, he would absolutely fit the template of a genius.

The greatest change was in Charisma. It had broken through the mortal limit and reached 21—the extraordinary realm!

The exact changes were unclear, but he could feel that his Magic Power had become docile and obedient. He could cast with a mere thought, with remarkable ease.

The change brought by that alone was far greater than before.

’I’ll study it slowly.’

He focused his mind on the character sheet:

[Experience Pool]: 10129

Even after leveling up, he still had more than ten thousand experience points left, wealth on a scale he had never had before.

And his current experience was 34000/48000. He was only short by four thousand experience points from leveling up again—not far now~

’Werewolves... are pretty cute too.’
