The Archmetamagician: The Weave Collapses Again

The wyvern’s Strength and Constitution were very high; its Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma were a complete mess.

Anser knew it would certainly fail its saving throw against his Fear, but a panicked wyvern would flee madly, far faster than Fly. If he couldn’t catch up, then the spell would have been cast for nothing.

Only after obtaining the essence of wind elementals did he gain a bit of confidence in aerial combat.

’I still lack a protective spell that can directly withstand a wyvern’s venomous stinger.’

He looked down. The half-dragon was slowly descending onto the city wall, surrounded on all sides by a group of professionals led by Baron, Tim, and Giant Tail.

The half-dragon carried a magic item with a Feather Fall effect—standard equipment for flying knights. It would have been strange not to have one.

It was said that the griffon riders of Waterdeep were all equipped with such items.

Anser spread his butterfly wings and descended.

The moment he landed on Nornoth’s back, a thunderous boom came from the distance. The wyvern, grievously wounded and incapacitated, fell into the city.

[Target eliminated. Gained 2300 experience points. Level up!]

Anser burst out laughing. The one that was good at flying had fallen to its death, while the one without wings was fine—how interesting.

Clang—

Weapons collided with a piercing sound.

Giant Tail took a step back, shook his numb arm, and charged forward again.

The half-dragon was very strong, but not overwhelmingly so. With shield in his left hand and hammer in his right, Giant Tail lacked offensive power, yet he did not press recklessly. In the short term, the half-dragon could do nothing to him.

Tim held a longsword at the side, providing support, while the elite rogue Sandray was eager to make a move.

Baron, the strongest among them, did not act. A javelin was gripped in his hand as he stared coldly at the wyverns circling overhead.

The wyverns moved quickly to provide support, but having witnessed their companion’s fate, they did not dare descend.

Several blue-armored soldiers raised the bed crossbows to their maximum elevation, adjusting the angles from time to time. The armor-piercing bolts were as thick as a baby’s arm, their intimidation at full display.

Using bed crossbows to shoot down a wyvern was indeed extremely difficult, but as long as a wyvern landed or was forced to slow by interference, several crossbows working together to seal off its angles still made dragon hunting possible.

At the thought of this, the vanguard soldiers felt as if they had been injected with adrenaline. If they could bring down another one, it would be enough for them to boast about for the rest of their lives.

The half-dragon turned and saw Anser. A flicker of panic flashed in its heart. It did not dare utter even half a harsh word. Facing Giant Tail, it opened its mouth and exhaled a breath of dark green dragonfire.

Giant Tail raised his round shield in front of him and shrank his body behind it. He was only lightly injured; his defensive technique was skillful.

The dragon breath had a wide area of effect, instantly forcing the surrounding people back.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the half-dragon leapt down from the city wall and landed outside the southern gate. But before it could even feel pleased, a two-handed greatsword suddenly descended from the sky.

Baron truly lived up to being a high-ranking professional. His two-handed greatsword was light and nimble, pressing the half-dragon until it was hard-pressed to defend.

In just a few seconds, several more bloody gashes appeared on the half-dragon’s body. If its dragon scales were not hard enough, it would likely already be severely wounded by now.

Compared to a ”Battle Master,” the half-dragon’s little bit of technique looked far too crude.

Anser lightly patted Nornoth and cast Jump and Longstrider on it.

Nornoth borrowed force from the steps and easily leapt onto the city wall.

’So fast.’ Anser watched the fight below, his heart jolting.

The combat of high-ranking professionals was concise and fluid, their movements so fast they far exceeded the limits of ordinary human reaction. It gave him a huge shock.

If they got in close, reacting a bit too slowly would get you chopped into mince on the spot.

’But I can’t let you have this head.’

He focused and drew on his Magic Power. A dense, faint glow of Magic Power shot from his eyes.

”બર્નિંગરે”

Metamagic: Empowered, Seeking + Upcast: Scorching Ray!

Along with an impassioned draconic phrase, four flame rays flashed through the air in an instant.

The half-dragon was very alert and instinctively tilted its head to dodge, but it did not expect the rays to bend slightly and strike almost simultaneously at its head and its chest and abdomen.

Bang, bang, bang, bang!

Dragon scales shattered, flesh scorched. Green-black smoke and the smell of roasted meat drifted on the wind.

[…The half-dragon is hit, taking 45 fire damage. Current Hit Point 35/105]

Baron was startled as well, but he reacted quickly. As the half-dragon recoiled after being injured, he stepped in and lifted into a thrust.

Suddenly, several sharp whistles closed in at extreme speed.

Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh—

Baron knew this sound too well. He decisively abandoned the pursuit and retreated explosively.

The moment he left his position, several javelins stabbed into the ground in succession, sinking in more than halfway, their tails still trembling violently.

Anser lifted his head to look. Three wyverns dove in crisscrossing, trying to save their companion.

A half-dragon stood on a wyvern’s back, one hand gripping the reins, the other throwing javelins.

Swoosh, swoosh—

Bang!

Giant Tail arrived, and with a flying shield, knocked one javelin away.

Nornoth suddenly exerted force and barely dodged another javelin.

The spearhead scraped past its body and plunged into the brick wall. The shaft burst and snapped, the force terrifying.

On the other side, Baron was also forced back several steps.

The half-dragon’s strength was already formidable. Add to that the wyvern’s impact, the advantage of height, and a javelin could skewer a person to pieces.

Seizing the chance, one wyvern skimmed low toward the half-dragon. With a long sweep of its tail, it hooked the half-dragon and carried it into the air.

’Teleport!’ Anser’s face turned cold. If they got away like this, it would be humiliating to the extreme.

Man and horse vanished abruptly. In the next instant, they appeared in midair more than fifty meters diagonally above, only dozens of meters from the wyvern that was making the rescue.

Anser casually cast Feather Fall on Nornoth, then flew in midair himself, unleashing his full firepower.

”ફાયરબોલકલા”

Metamagic: Quickened, Empowered, Distant + Fireball!

A flash burst from his fingertips and, in the blink of an eye, streaked across the sky, appearing ahead of the wyvern that was pulling up with all its might.

The wyvern hurriedly twisted its body to change direction, but the half-dragon hanging from its tail was too heavy and was instead flung forward by inertia.

The half-dragon watched helplessly as that flash appeared before its nose and instinctively raised a hand to swat at it.

Boom—

A massive red-and-yellow fireball exploded in midair. Flames engulfed half of the half-dragon and the wyvern’s bodies, clinging like a festering parasite and continuing to burn.

[Target eliminated. Gained 1371 experience points]

The half-dragon turned into a charred corpse and fell, dead on the spot.

The wyvern’s tail was injured, but its wings were intact. It desperately pulled up and fled.

”Lucky for you.” With the brief flight granted by elemental resonance, Anser slowly descended to the ground.

That wyvern had companions providing support and was flying fast; it was not easy to pursue. Moreover, his sorcery points were already depleted and more than half his Magic Power had been consumed. It was better to stop while ahead.

Baron stood not far away. Hearing Anser’s words, the corner of his mouth twitched, and his expression froze. For a moment, he did not know how to describe his feelings.

’This… is how a warrior fights.’

He comforted himself, yet in his mind there involuntarily surfaced the ”expression” of that Wizard friend of his.

Anser swung himself onto his horse and looked up at the sky. The wyverns were now only three small black dots, temporarily retreating.

If they returned, it might be two squads, three squads, or even more wyverns and half-dragons.

Seeing the battle end, Giant Tail ran over, lifted the half-dragon’s corpse and weapon, and dropped them before Anser.

Anser gave him an approving look, then turned to Baron. ”Sir Baron, this loot?”

”Haha… it’s all yours.” Baron was somewhat covetous, but he did not want to offend Anser.

This was an elite spellcaster who had consecutively blasted to death a wyvern and a half-dragon. In terms of status, he could stand entirely on equal footing with him.

”Many thanks.” Anser nodded. ”There’s still a wyvern in the city. It’s not convenient for me to handle. Perhaps…”

”I’ll take care of it.” Baron understood that Anser was offering him a favor and immediately felt goodwill rise in his heart.

”Then I’ll go back and rest.”

”Very well.”

The city gate opened. Anser rode into the city, Baron walking at his side like a… high-ranking attendant.

Giant Tail followed behind carrying the half-dragon’s corpse, grinning broadly, extremely pleased.

This was a half-dragon. Although their Challenge Rating was the same, even two of him together would not be a match for it.
