My Youth Began With Him

Director Wu became anxious as he watched Huo Mian hesitate…

“Director Wu, I would like to resign.”

Finally, Huo Mian clenched her teeth and told him what she wanted. Then, she felt like a heavy baggage had been lifted from her shoulders.

Director Wu wasn’t surprised; he seemed to expect Huo Mian to make this decision.

“Are you sure?” Director Wu poured himself a cup of tea before asking slowly, and Huo Mian nodded with determination. “Mhm, Qin Chu’s been so busy and there’s so many things going on at the company. My father-in-law isn’t doing very well, so I want to help him.”

“But… isn’t being a doctor your biggest dream in life?”

“Yes, but to me, my husband’s matters are my priority… I’m not ambitious, nor do I want to be an iron-lady. Therefore, my husband’s business will always come first, because I don’t want to see him so exhausted… so…” Then, Huo Mian fell silent, but her intentions were clearer than ever.

After a long pause, Director Wu looked up at her. “Huo Mian… you know how much I appreciate your talents.”

“Yes, I know.”

“There are a lot of doctors in C City, but none of them are as professional as you… You’ve been working at South Side for so long. Although I’ve never praised you, I cannot overlook your significant contributions.”

“Director Wu, I’m really not that good… you think too highly of me,” Huo Mian replied, feeling embarrassed.

“Let me finish… I understand where you’re coming from, and it’s only normal for you to resign… GK’s a big corporation and Qin Chu doesn’t have any helpers, so of course he’s exhausted. With your help, he’ll be able to relax a little bit. You love each other, so I understand your wish to help him… but, I won’t accept your resignation.”

Huo Mian froze upon hearing this. “Director Wu…”

“I’m a selfish person, I don’t want our hospital to lose such an outstanding doctor… so I’m going to issue you an unpaid leave.”

“Unpaid leave?” Huo Mian opened her mouth but no other words came out.

Unpaid leaves were the ultimate form of honor; it meant that the position will always be there for you, but you won’t get paid until you come back.

Normal workplaces didn’t offer this to their employees unless they performed outstandingly at their jobs.

Huo Mian was flattered…

“You will still be the chief of neurology at South Side… once you’re done at GK and want to come back, we’ll welcome you with open arms.”

“Director Wu, how can I…” Huo Mian began to sob.

“But… you won’t get paid or receive any bonuses,” Director Wu emphasized with a smile on his face.

“I don’t need a salary or bonuses, Director Wu, thank you so much for this…” Huo Mian felt a little emotional, and Director Wu replied, “You deserve it. You’re so outstanding, so your talents shouldn’t go to waste… If you weren’t married, I would’ve asked you to study abroad and contribute more to the medical community… I’m old, and my thoughts are probably different from yours, and you may think that I’m old-fashioned. But Huo Mian, remember that a person’s success cannot be measured by money, status, or power… It’s determined by the contributions you make to society and the values you create… Do you understand?”
