My Youth Began With Him

After Huo Mian finished changing, she refused the offer from another nurse in her department to accompany her and walked up to the VIP area on the top floor alone.

On her way there, the only thing she could think of was that, if the procedure were to fail, she might not even get the chance to see her family again.

At that thought, she pulled out her cell phone and called her mother. It rang for a while, but no one answered. Clearly, her mother didn’t want to talk to her.

She sighed and then called her little brother, Jing Zhixin.

”Sis!” Jing Zhixin’s youthful voice sounded from the other end.

”Zhixin, are you in class?”

”Not anymore. I didn’t have many classes today so I’m at the library, doing a bit of research. Is everything okay?”

”Oh, it is. I’m a bit busy today, so I might not be able to go to Fourth People’s Hospital. If you have the time, don’t forget to go check on mom.”

”I know. I’ll go when I’m done here, and I’ll buy some dinner for mom.”

”Alright.” Huo Mian’s mind was weighed down by other things.

”Sis, I’ll talk to you later.”

”Zhixin, if I become too busy, I might not be able to take care of you two. You have to take care of our mom for me.”

”Got it, Sis.” With that, Jing Zhixin hung up.

Lifting up her phone again, Huo Mian flipped through her contact list until she reached Ning Zhiyuan’s name. She didn’t really see a need to make that call.

Instead, she dialed Zhu Lingling’s number. However, the call didn’t go through, so she was probably on a flight.

Putting away her phone, Huo Mian took a deep breath and, clearing her mind, she opened the door of the lounge adjacent to the operating room.

A man, who seemed to be in his thirties, spoke to her first, ”You’re Huo Mian, right?”

”I am.”

”I’m the scrub nurse of the Neurosurgery Department, Song Heng. You can just call me Song.”

”Hello,” Huo Mian greeted him.

”These are the names and profiles of those involved with the surgery today. Have a look.”

Song Heng handed Huo Mian a file, and she slowly flipped it open.

Assistant Surgeon: MD Wang Qi, male, 47, renowned neurosurgical specialist, graduated from Jing Medical University

Assistant Surgeon: MD Huang Xiaoning, female, 43, renowned neurosurgical specialist, graduated from the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland.

Anesthesiologist: MD Fang Xu, 42, expert anesthesiologist, graduated from Osaka Medical University.

Scrub Nurse: NP Song Heng, 35, neurosurgery scrub nurse, graduated from the School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore.

Scrub Nurse: Huo Mian, 24, intern obstetrics scrub nurse, graduated from the Advanced Nursing Program at C City Medical Academy.

Compared to the profiles before her, Huo Mian felt like an ant before giants.

If there were so many experts lying about, why did they have to send an OB/GYN intern nurse like her in here to risk her life?

That’s right, the director said that she was personally picked by the lead surgeon. Where was his or her profile?

She raised her head. ”Umm…” she asked, ”why isn’t the profile of the lead surgeon here?”

”Oh, it’s not on file. The lead surgeon doesn’t like attention, and he refused to reveal too much of his personal information. All I heard was that he’s a very young man with a postdoctoral degree from Harvard Medical School.”

”He has a postdoctoral degree from Harvard Medical School?” Huo Mian was left completely in shock.

Someone as impressive as him existed in a little third-tier city like theirs? How come she had never heard of this person before?

”Okay, have some confidence, we’ll definitely succeed!” Song Heng smiled.

”I really hope so,” Huo Mian said and returned a smile.

Just then, the door of the lounge was pushed open and four doctors in white lab coats entered the room.

When Huo Mian saw the last person to walk in, she felt like her brain was about to short-circuit.

That’s… Qin Chu… right?
