Legend of Swordsman

Chapter 6257: Ambush

Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation

This time, despite Iron-faced Liang Chen’s tough talk, he had to marvel at Jian Wushuang’s audacity.

Just with such a small group, he dared to attack hundreds of organized soldiers.

This was outright rebellion!

Seeing that he had said enough, Jian Wushuang waved his hand and said, “Take Brother Liang Chen down to rest first. After I deal with those soldiers, we can continue our conversation!”

To him, these people were merely stepping stones.

Of course, he would also give them certain benefits.

After taking over the entire Shajia Town and Shajiakou, Jian Wushuang left Wang Lun to guard and oversee the place.

He also left behind twenty axemen.

This was enough to secure the rear.

He then took Scarred Xuan and a dozen other axemen to the official road.

At this moment, the light cavalry from Qingshan Town had already reached their ambush point.

The first round was the horse-tripping rope.

This military equipment was something Wang Lun had robbed.

Originally, obtaining such things felt like a loss, as they couldn’t be sold and had offended the bigwigs in Yongcheng.

But this time, it played a crucial role.

Horse-tripping ropes didn’t require much skill; the main issue was that they were troublesome to make.

Now, it only took a few strong men to topple over a dozen cavalrymen.

Clang!

As the horse-tripping ropes were raised, the horses neighed.

“Not good, it’s an ambush!”

These people, being elite cavalry of the court, reacted quickly.

They immediately prepared to turn around.

But behind them were more horse-tripping ropes.

They had already fallen into the full trap set by Jian Wushuang.

“Dismount and fight these bandits to the death!”

Being attacked from both sides, the cavalry lost their advantage and had to dismount to fight.

Though a bit chaotic, dozens of cavalrymen dismounted, still wearing soft armor and wielding curved blades.

They could still fight their way out.

But as they charged to both sides, their feet sank, and they fell into the pre-dug traps.

Below were sharp bamboo knives.

Even with soft armor, they were still pierced through when they fell.

The panicked horses and the dismounted, confused cavalry were all quickly dealt with by Jian Wushuang’s men in less than a quarter of an hour.

There weren’t actually many people here.

Initially, Jian Wushuang had planned to bring in a group of archers.

This would have been faster.

They had good bows and sharp arrows, but unfortunately, not many knew how to use them.

It was easier to set traps instead.

“Leave ten people to send the horses to Shajia Town. The rest, follow me!”

After giving his instructions, Jian Wushuang led over fifty men towards the back mountain.

The cavalry seemed to pose the greatest threat to them, but their small numbers made them the easiest to deal with.

The infantry was a real trouble.

Once detected, they would all rush into the mountains and forests. Even with the advantage of the terrain, they would still lose a lot of men.

Moreover, most of these people were porters, laborers, or boatmen.

Losing one or two was acceptable, but if too many died and the rest got scared, it would be a disaster.

Therefore, Jian Wushuang dared not be careless.

After crossing the back mountain, it was still an official road.

This official road encircled half of the mountain. The ambushes on both sides seemed far away on the official road, but relying on the terrain, Jian Wushuang and his team found Xiang Yang and the others after crossing the mountain.

“How is it? Is it resolved over there?” Xiang Yang was still a bit worried.

Scarred Xuan, hearing this, beamed with joy and said, “It’s resolved, we’ve taken them all down. Not a single one of us got injured. It was like hunting tigers in the mountains; no matter how fierce they were, they couldn’t touch us in the traps!”

With this statement, the hearts of the surrounding ambushers relaxed.

Their biggest fear was failure.

Now, the good news undoubtedly boosted their confidence tremendously.

Especially the axemen who had acted with Jian Wushuang twice, they were filled with confidence, thinking these government soldiers were not as terrifying as the rumors claimed.

But the real test of life and death was yet to come.

Taking down Shajia Town was mostly about gang fights.

But the government soldiers lying in ambush here would be engaged in battlefield slaughter once they resisted.

Jian Wushuang lowered his breath, quietly waiting for the soldiers to arrive, not wasting words with the others.

They waited for about the time it takes to burn a stick of incense.

Then they heard the heavy footsteps.

This sound made Jian Wushuang frown.

“Heavy infantry?”

A thought flashed in his mind about heavy infantry.

If that were true, their traps might not be as effective against these heavy infantry.

Moreover, in close combat, they wouldn’t be a match even against lightly armored infantry, let alone heavy infantry.

It would take at least three to fight one, and their numbers were already much fewer.

Now, with heavy infantry, it would take five to fight one.

The only advantage was that the opponents were not very agile, each wearing thirty pounds of armor, making their movements cumbersome.

They could only rely on this advantage.

“The plan has changed. Team one and team two, step back ten steps and dig deeper trenches. Team three, spearmen, hold the counterattack. Once teams one and two are free, split and escape to both sides!”

After arranging everything, Jian Wushuang’s figure silently disappeared into the night.

He had his own task to complete.

That was to take down the leader of the opposing side.

The cavalry just now did not include the officer from Qingshan Town he was looking for.

However, the officer must have come.

At the forefront of the soldiers, there were several tall horses.

Among them, a middle-aged man with a long beard caught Jian Wushuang’s eye.

No need to ask, this man was the officer of Qingshan Town.

He was also a proud student of the instructor in Qingshan Town.

But Jian Wushuang didn’t understand why heavy infantry was deployed this time.

This puzzled him. Logically, they had nothing to fear from the opponents!

Fifty cavalry were enough to kill those mountain bandits.

Why bring two hundred heavy infantry?

Wasn’t this redundant?

Jian Wushuang wasn’t a god now and couldn’t figure it out. He could only capture the man and ask.

“Positions in place, start the operation!”

Following Xiang Yang’s order.

The spearmen ambushed on both sides instantly charged out.

Along with them, several jars of strong liquor were thrown into the crowd. The smell of the liquor made the soldiers frown.

Then came the torches, thrown at them.

This wasn’t Jian Wushuang’s idea. He thought it unnecessary to be so ruthless. It was best to keep some alive.

By using their superior knowledge and persuasive skills, he and Xiang Yang could win these people over to their side.

But doing it this way would likely leave no one to surrender.

However, it worked out well.

Using fire, they quickly overwhelmed a large number of soldiers.

As the spears thrust out uniformly, they had little effect.

Because of the heavy armor, and since few on Jian Wushuang’s side knew how to use spears properly, they just charged forward, trying to take advantage of the weapon’s length.

But they didn’t pierce the armor, causing them to stumble instead.
