Harbinger Of Glory

The breakthrough finally came in the fifty-seventh minute.

Wigan worked the ball into the penalty area, where Jake attempted to turn his marker.

The Everton defender stepped across him, and the ensuing challenge sent the striker to the ground.

Without any deliberation, the referee pointed to the spot.

A penalty.

The Everton players protested, but the decision stood.

Wigan had been handed a chance to take the lead, and Leo was among the first to go for it.

For a moment, it looked as though he would take responsibility himself.

Instead, he picked up the ball and handed it to Jake.

Leo nodded towards the spot.

”Go on.”

Jake gave him a short nod in return, then placed the ball on the penalty mark.

He took several steps back, waited for the referee’s whistle, began his run-up, and struck the ball with force.

With his last goal coming in a few games back against Chelsea, Jake drove the ball into the net, giving the goalkeeper little chance of reaching it.

The Wigan players rushed towards him, celebrating as the away supporters made themselves heard in the stands.

Everton 1–2 Wigan.

Jake was swallowed by his teammates near the corner of the penalty area, with some clapping him on the back before they headed to the halfway line.

When the game restarted, the home side pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but their attacks increasingly left space for Wigan to exploit.

Whenever Everton tried to build through midfield, the Latics closed them down and forced them into hurried passes.

Tiehi and the players around him worked tirelessly to recover possession, while Leo helped turn those recoveries into counter-attacks.

Everton’s attempts to stop the bleeding often ended with Wigan winning the ball back before the home side could get near the penalty area.

As the minutes passed, frustration crept into the home team’s play.

Their passes became less precise, and Wigan’s defence remained organised under pressure, shutting down their forward runs.

Then, in the eighty-fifth minute, the visitors struck again.

Everton tried to work the ball forward, but Wigan disrupted the move and forced a loose pass in midfield.

The ball broke into space, and Darikwa, back in a while, reacted first.

The captain moved onto it, set himself and struck across goal before the defenders could close him down.

His shot travelled low to the bottom-left corner as the goalkeeper stretched, but the ball slipped past him and nestled in the net.

Everton 1–3 Wigan.

Darikwa wheeled away, raising both arms as his teammates ran over to celebrate.

The away end erupted, and players soon surrounded the captain to congratulate him on a goal that gave Wigan some breathing room.

With five minutes left of normal time, the tie looked all but settled.

Everton still tried to find a way back, but Wigan defended with discipline.

They didn’t let the home side build sustained pressure, but when Everton finally got into the box in stoppage time, the attack ended in a penalty.

The referee pointed to the spot in the ninety-second minute.

Everton stepped up and converted, reducing the deficit to one goal as the home crowd found its voice again.

”Not done yet,” the commentary said as the Everton players grabbed the ball and headed back to the kick-off spot.

There was still a chance, however small, to snatch something from the match.

The opportunity they hoped for, however, slipped away as Wigan kept possession long enough to run down the remaining seconds, and the referee’s whistle followed shortly after.

The match was over.

Wigan had won 3–2, eliminating Everton and securing their place in the next round of the FA Cup.

After the disappointment against Middlesbrough, it was a welcome response.

They fell behind, recovered, and then took control of a difficult away tie against a Premier League opponent.

The broadcast returned to the studio as the players exchanged handshakes and headed off the pitch.

”That’s a significant result for Wigan,” the commentator said.

”They’ve had to work for it, especially after Everton took the lead, but they’ve responded well. Tiehi’s equaliser got them back into the game, Jake took his penalty brilliantly, and Darikwa’s goal looked to have settled things before that late spot-kick made the finish a little more uncomfortable than it needed to be.”

His co-commentator nodded.

”And they’ll be pleased to get through after going out of the Carabao Cup.

They’ve shown again that they can recover when a match doesn’t start the way they want it to. That’s an important quality to have at this stage of the season.”

The discussion soon turned to the next-round draw.

With Everton out of the way, Wigan would face Manchester City, a meeting that was becoming increasingly familiar.

City had already beaten the Latics twice: first in the FA Cup final the previous season, and again in their more recent encounter.

The second defeat had been particularly painful, with Haaland’s late winner ending Wigan’s long unbeaten run while Leo was unavailable through injury.

Now, the two sides would meet again in the same competition that had brought them together at Wembley.

”That’s a tough draw for Wigan,” the main commentator observed.

”They’ve done their job against Everton, but Manchester City are a different proposition altogether.

Pep Guardiola’s side have the experience of going deep in these competitions, and they’ll know exactly what it takes to win a tie like this.”

”Absolutely,” his colleague replied.

”But it’s still a few games away, and Wigan have plenty to deal with before then.

They’ll need to prepare properly and be at their very best if they’re going to stand a chance against Pep’s side. City have punished them before, and Wigan can’t afford to give them the same opportunities again.”

For now, though, the Latics had another win to celebrate.

The season was beginning to ask more of them, and every match seemed to bring a new test.

They had done well to win this one, but what they would make of the next was another question entirely.
