Harbinger Of Glory

The Premier League faded on the broadcast, showing the inside of the DW Stadium.

One final sweep of the cameras carried viewers around the ground where blue and white scarves stretched across the home end in waves. In contrast, the travelling Tottenham supporters answered with songs of their own from the opposite corner.

Every stand was full, every seat occupied long before kickoff, and the atmosphere had already reached the kind of volume most stadiums only found after a goal despite the players not even showing.

On the touchline, photographers crowded together near the dugouts, lenses trained toward the two sets of players finishing their final preparations.

And for a brief moment, the league table flashed across television screens showing the sides’ respective players on the table.

1. Wigan Athletic - 21 points.

3. Tottenham Hotspur - 16 points.

Another graphic followed almost immediately, showing the names of the two sides right before the broadcast returned to the pitch.

The Wigan players gathered inside their own half, Dawson speaking quietly to the group before clapping each player on the shoulder as they broke away.

Across from them, Ange Postecoglou stood with his arms folded, watching his own players complete their pre-game sequence before sending them toward the halfway line with a nod.

Only then did the main commentator begin.

”Good afternoon and welcome to the DW Stadium, where the Premier League leaders welcome Tottenham Hotspur in what already feels like one of the standout fixtures of the season.”

The camera settled behind one of the goals before slowly panning across the packed stadium once more.

”The atmosphere has been building here all afternoon, and you can understand why.

Wigan come into today with seven wins from seven, sitting proudly at the top of the Premier League, while Tottenham know victory would cut that four-point gap considerably.”

”Quite the occasion,” the co-commentator replied.

”Top against third. Two managers who’ve made outstanding starts to the season. And perhaps the biggest talking point before a ball has even been kicked...”

The main commentator nodded.

”Leo Calderon.”

As if on cue, the broadcast immediately cut to the Wigan bench where Leo sat zipped into his navy puffer jacket.

And the slightly lighter white dressing that the previous one along the side of his head was impossible to miss as he watched his teammates take their places.

”Not in the starting eleven this afternoon.”

”He’s named among the substitutes, so he’s available if needed, but after that collision against Burnley last weekend, Shaun Dawson has decided not to risk him from the opening whistle.”

”And that changes things significantly,” the co-commentator said.

”This Wigan side has revolved around Leo for most of the season.

Not because they’re incapable without him. That’s far from the truth, but because he’s the player who dictates almost everything.

He controls the rhythm, he breaks lines with his passing, he sees danger before everyone else.

You can’t replace that with another player, so I guess all that Dawson is doing today is to find a way to compensate for it or find very vastly different avenues of attack as well as defensive covers!”

The camera switched to Max Power exchanging a few final words with Tiehi near the centre circle.

”Max Power comes into that holding midfield role. He’s dependable. He’ll work.

He’ll organise people around him. But he isn’t Leo Calderon, and nobody here expects him to be.”

”And Tottenham have adjusted as well,” the main commentator continued.

”Pierre-Emile Højbjerg drops to the bench, while Yves Bissouma comes in alongside Pape Matar Sarr.”

”A more athletic midfield,” the co-commentator agreed.

”They’ll press harder. They’ll cover more ground. And if I’m Ange Postecoglou, I’m telling those three to make life uncomfortable for Wigan immediately.”

”So you’re expecting Spurs to start quickly?”

”I think they have to,” the co-commentator answered as he glanced down from the gantry.

”They’ve spent all week preparing for Wigan, though it might not seem much, but for a professional side like Tottenham, I think it is enough.

They’ve seen what Burnley managed to do by disrupting Leo’s influence, and they’ll believe this is the best opportunity anyone has had so far to expose Wigan’s weaknesses.”

While the two commentators went at it on the gantry, the broadcast followed Dawson and Postecoglou as the two managers met briefly near the technical area.

A firm handshake was seen, followed by a couple of quiet words and then two knowing smiles before each returned to his own dugout.

”A quick look at the two starting elevens,” the commentator said as a graphic for the lineup of the home side appeared.

”For Wigan, Ben Amos starts in goal. O’Shea partners Whatmough in central defence, with Seriki and Bennet occupying the full-back positions.

Max Power anchors the midfield alongside Tiehi, with Reyes operating just ahead. Ezra starts on the right, Carlo on the left, and Jake replaces Will Keane in the starting lineup for the first time in a while.”

”As we can see, not much has changed tactically aside from Leo’s absence!”

”And Jake’s presence,” the co-commentator added right before the graphic shifted again.

”For Tottenham, Vicario starts in goal. Porro, Romero, Van de Ven and Udogie make up the back four.

Right at the base of midfield, Bissouma and Sarr sit behind Maddison, who is in that attacking midfield role, while Kulusevski and Richarlison support captain Son Heung-min from the flanks!”

”I’ll be watching Son’s positioning,” the co-commentator added.

”If Postecoglou shifts him out to the left and lets Richarlison move through the middle later in the game, that creates a completely different problem for Wigan.”

A moment later, Son appeared behind the ball at the kickoff spot, kicking the game off after losing the toss to Wigan.

The referee glanced toward both assistants while Son placed one boot lightly on top of the ball.

Around them, thirty thousand voices merged into one continuous wall of sound until individual chants disappeared completely beneath the noise.

The referee raised the whistle, and a moment later, one sharp blast pierced the afternoon as Son rolled the ball backwards.

The match was underway.
