Rebirth in Japan: The Heiress Who Conquered the World

Early November 1989

Shinbashi, Minato Ward, Tokyo — Saionji Information System (SIS) Headquarters, B2 Core Server Room

Industrial exhaust fans deep in the ceiling hummed at a low frequency, constantly pulling away the ozone from hundreds of running servers. The climate control held the room at exactly twenty-two degrees Celsius. Rows of black server racks lined the space, their countless indicator lights blinking in the dimness and casting shifting shadows across the anti-static floor.

Saionji Satsuki sat in a wide leather swivel chair.

Today she wore a minimalist cream cashmere turtleneck, her long hair pinned back with a deep blue tortoiseshell clip. She held a bone china teacup, her fingertips tracing the rim.

At the edge of the console, the indicator on the red encrypted phone—a unit with complex dials—began flashing rapidly.

Satsuki reached out with her free hand and hit speakerphone.

”Boss,” came Frank’s slightly raspy voice. The transpacific fiber-optic line added a faint crackle of static.

”The results from the initial micro-position test are in. Market depth on long-dated deep out-of-the-money puts is exactly as thin as we expected. Market makers are dumping these contracts like they’re trash.”

Frank paused. She heard him swallow.

”We’ve hit physical resistance, though. David’s actuarial team just sent the execution report. Manual order-splitting by traders is too slow. Worse, professional traders have behavioral tells they can’t suppress.”

”They default to round lots—ten, fifty. And their order timing shows clear biological rhythm. A dozen traders on keyboards might be safe for a day. But over time, that human ’heartbeat’ will create an overlapping waveform in the exchange’s data pool. Quant models at Goldman or Morgan will spot it instantly.”

Satsuki listened, silent. She lifted her teacup and took a small sip of warm black tea.

”Then cut manual ops,” she said. Her voice was clear, unhurried. ”Machines do machine work. Stay on the line, Frank.”

She turned slightly and looked across the console at Shimomura Tsutomu.

The genius hacker the Saionji family kept on retainer was cross-legged in an ergonomic chair with a broken armrest. He wore a faded gray hoodie and chewed gum hard.

Beside him, Sayuri in her dark maid uniform set down a fresh espresso.

”Shimomura,” Satsuki said. ”How long to write a fully automated high-frequency order-splitter for the New York desk?”

Shimomura stopped chewing. He grabbed the espresso and downed it. The bitterness hit his system and his eyes lit up.

”Two hours.”

He handed the empty cup back to Sayuri, cracked his knuckles.

”A basic TWAP or VWAP bot? Five minutes. But that kind of pseudo-randomness still has human fingerprints. Wall Street quants could reverse-engineer our total capital from the timeline.”

He turned to his modified Sun workstation, hands hovering over the mechanical keyboard.

”I need time to tap the weather radar on this roof. I’ll pull atmospheric electromagnetic noise—minute-level fluctuations—and use that physical entropy as the RNG seed.”

”I’ll use nature’s disorder to shred those dollars of yours that stink of money.”

Keys exploded.

Clack-clack-clack—

It sounded like rain hammering the server room floor.

”Boss, start the clock. I’m about to make those New York traders obsolete.”

Satsuki nodded once. She leaned back in the leather chair and watched C code scroll across the screen.

...

Two hours and forty-five minutes later.

The compile bar hit 100%. A green dialog popped up.

Shimomura blew a bubble, popped it.

”Build done. UNIX executable. Sending to New York via SIS encrypted channel now.”

He hit Enter. The router’s data light began blinking fast.

Across the globe — Midtown Manhattan, New York.

Inside S.A. Investment’s trading floor, central air blew cold across rows of flickering Bloomberg terminals.

Frank and Chief Actuary David stood at the main console.

On screen, a package named ghost_protocol.tar.Z sat in the inbox.

David wiped sweat from his forehead and typed the decryption key.

”David, transfer trading permissions for all one hundred Umbrella Trust accounts to this program,” Frank said. One hand in his suit pocket.

David swallowed.

Handing control of over a billion in cash to fresh external code violated every instinct he had as an actuary.

But orders were orders.

He hit execute.

Across the floor, dozens of trader terminals locked. Manual input fields grayed out. A green-on-black code interface seized every machine.

The algorithm started.

In milliseconds, over a billion in short-selling capital was fed into the program they’d named ’Ghost’.

The capital was shredded.

Three lots, seven lots, two lots, eleven lots. Fragmented buy orders for CME and SIMEX long-dated puts scattered across the global network like dust.

No logic. Sometimes twelve orders fired in three seconds. Other times, minutes of silence. Routes jumped: London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong.

It mimicked amateur retail traders with tiny accounts, spread across time zones.

On the New York floor, manual typing stopped. Dozens of traders sat frozen, watching their screens.

Green data streams flickered and flowed.

This capital, masked by the algorithm, was silently inhaling every cheap Japanese put on the market with mechanical, unstoppable momentum.

...

2:15 PM. Broadway, New York.

Headquarters of a top-tier Wall Street investment bank.

Inside the Risk Control Center, phones rang and traders shouted.

Senior Risk Officer Robert sat at a cutting-edge analysis terminal.

His desk was stacked with printed vol charts. A cold Americano sat untouched.

Beep— A yellow warning popped bottom-right.

****

Robert frowned.

He set down his sandwich, wiped his fingers on a napkin, and double-clicked the alert.

Screen flipped to Level 2 data.

Robert scanned the dense trade prints.

Nikkei had ripped past 35,000. The whole market was long calls. A volume spike in long-dated puts usually meant a big player knew something macro and was hedging or positioning.

He opened the capital-source analyzer to map the flow.

Progress bar crawled.

He sipped cold coffee to stay sharp.

Results popped.

Confusion flickered in his eyes.

No blocks. Not even one order over fifty lots.

Just particles.

Two lots from an obscure London retail broker...

Five lots from a Chicago ag hedge account...

Seven lots from a Geneva private wealth terminal...

Execution times random. Prices scattered. No sweep pattern that signals institutional entry. Cheap option premiums hadn’t moved despite the volume.

”Robert, catch any whales?” his supervisor asked, passing by with a report.

Robert shook his head, scrolling more prints. Same fragmentation.

”Nothing,” Robert said, voice dry. He rubbed his eyes. ”Nikkei long-dated put volume ticked up. I pulled the details. It’s all retail scraps worldwide.”

The supervisor glanced at the screen and chuckled.

”Japan’s mooning. You’ll always get small money with height sickness buying deep OTM puts as lottery tickets. Micro-hedging noise. Happens daily. Won’t move anything.”

”Keep your eyes on USD-JPY. That’s the real war.” The supervisor clapped Robert’s shoulder and walked off.

”Understood.” Robert gripped the mouse again.

He watched the green prints still flickering—two lots, three lots.

Logic said fragmented global retail couldn’t have a unified brain. No desk would use hundreds of channels to buy pennies.

World’s big. Plenty of weirdos.

He moved the cursor to the yellow box’s X.

His finger twitched.

Click.

The mouse gave a faint snap.

The warning closed.

The screen filled again with green—stocks going up.
