Ember Legion

The next day, they went back down.

Chen Jin folded the order and tucked it into his sleeve. Zhou Zhengting hadn’t come; the form was still the one from two days before—a survey order, six names with the word loan written after each, and a note underneath: labor doesn’t offset the levy, paid by the day. Closed on completion, the form reclaimed. Xiao Mao pulled the old chart from his chest, checked its corners against the morning light—paper not creased, ink not bled—and tucked it back.

”Due today,” he said.

”Return it when we’re done,” Chen Jin said.

Eight lamps, lit and checked one by one, every one bright. Liu Dahe nested them in the padded basket and said the pit rule again: ”Lamps in, lamps out. However many go down, however many come up—one for one. Miss one, and the man stays below till it’s found.” Chen Jin’s addition went with it: ”Nothing comes up under the paper but the paper. Not one stone.”

Wen Heng stood outside the white-chalk ring, not stepping in. Steam rose from the pots at the tent. She passed towels hand to hand; each man got a bowl of salt water to rinse his throat, water boiled. No wounds, so the little book stayed closed. Fewer watchers than yesterday; a few still stood past the alley mouth, but the guard hadn’t moved the rope outward again.

The lamps went down one by one, counted to eight. Four down, four up. Xiao Mao first down the frame, the old stonemason second, Liu Dahe third, Chen Jin last. Two Ember Guards above—one at the frame, one at the rope.

The frame creaked under their weight, the same frame they’d set yesterday, its feet clear of the stake lines. Below, the lamp light reached ten paces and stopped.

Fifteen steps, the lamp sockets along the walls layered with soot, the worn groove bright with use. At the landing, the brass reflectors still caught the light—the lamp left in the lowest slot yesterday carried it up the wall into the dark, to a pale gray edge at the end. Xiao Mao didn’t look long; he carried his lamp on. The old stonemason pressed more fresh oil into the pivot cup, finger driven in, the oil soft, worked in and pulled back.

”A door that opens and closes every day,” he said.

The stone door still stood open an arm’s width, the seam the same seam. Four men stepped through, none of them pausing. The air from inside came cool, without smell, same as yesterday.

The hall was quieter than yesterday. Footsteps were swallowed the moment they entered; you had to stand close to be heard. Two rows of stone cradles, twelve a side, twenty-three still under oil-cloth, the wax seals intact, dust only on the cloth—only the first cradle east had been opened, showing the gun, its muzzle to the shaft overhead. The lamp lifted, lit the front row; the second row inward was only outline, the third and beyond was black.

The hard floor ran from the door straight into the hall, true to the step. Only their four sets of prints were fresh, laid over years of dust—yesterday’s entry still there, untouched.

The cradles stood in two lines down the hall, and the lines ran straight to the door—whoever set them had worked to a measure, the same as the gun cradles outside. Dust on the cloth, none on the floor between. The place had been left, not abandoned.

They didn’t go deep. Chen Jin pushed the lamp toward the near side of the door—yesterday they had been busy with the gun, hadn’t looked close at this stretch. The light found a man seated against the wall.

Not fallen. Kneeling, back to the wall, facing the gate. The armor still on him, iron-gray, the same color as the hard face outside, not a speck of rust from collar to groin, a dull glimmer under the lamp, the same as the gun. The hand bones locked on the hilt, locked so hard they wouldn’t pry. The blade laid before him, tip to the floor; he had sat, and stopped breathing, and never let go.

The armor plates were laced one into the next with thongs, the thongs long since ash, the plates still biting together. The boots under him had worn through at the heel—he had stood, stood till he could stand no more, then sat. The blade was straight, no fuller, the edge notched once, worn down, worked.

A man didn’t end like this by accident. He’d chosen the wall, chosen to sit with his back to it and his face to the door, and chosen not to leave. The blade in his hands was the last thing he’d held.

Xiao Mao’s lamp hung in the air and stopped.

Four men stopped, no one speaking.

The hall ate sound. The lamp held, light on the skeleton, showing the plates still in order, showing the locked force between hand bone and hilt, showing the blade’s long water-rubbed shine, earned by long use. For a few breaths there was no water sound, no insect sound, not even their own breathing—the stone took it. Chen Jin crouched, looked at the armor, then the hands, then the blade.

The stone was cold. The armor was cold.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

He didn’t speak. He reached and straightened the blade in the dead man’s grip a little—the blade hadn’t left the hand, only tilted, and he set it true. Finished, he drew his hand back and wiped it on his lapel.

Chen Jin crouched, fixing in his memory what he could: how many plates, how long the blade, which way the man faced. He didn’t keep accounts for the dead, but someone had kept this man’s—the row of punch marks at the collar matched the ring on the gun cradle, count for count.

The old stonemason crouched too, close to the armor below the collar. He ran a finger along a row of small pits, one after another, even depth, counted—the same hand as the ring on the gun cradle yesterday.

”Same hand as the stakes,” he said.

Xiao Mao pulled the rubbing of the gun-cradle punch marks from his chest, set it against the row on the skeleton’s armor by the lamp. Charcoal line met line, count met count. He said nothing, rolled the rubbing up, and looked once more at the skeleton, at the way it knelt—upright at its post, back to the wall, face to the gate, blade before it.

Liu Dahe stood to the side, hand drifting to the dog tag at his neck. The tag was still on its cord, its back to the light. He turned it over, looked, didn’t pull it free, let the hand drop, throat working, no sound.

Chen Jin saw, and didn’t ask.

The lamp moved down to the skeleton’s feet. Beside them sat an oil bowl, empty. No ash in the bottom; a ring of burnt black around the rim, same as the ones in the landing. Xiao Mao saw it first, looked a moment longer, and moved the lamp away.

The lit lamps had been gathered. The last man out had gathered them, left this one at the dead guard’s feet—lamps taken, dark left. That was why the deep hall held only dark: there had been lamps, but they had been gathered, and the man who gathered them had kept a place for every one who held his post to the end.

Xiao Mao understood it before he could name it—the empty bowl at the dead man’s feet was the same kind as the ones in the landing, and the landing’s bowls had been emptied by the same hands. The last to leave had walked the hall once more, gathering light, and left this one burning for the man who couldn’t.

Chen Jin stayed crouched. He looked at the skeleton a long time—at how the plates laced into a body, at how the blade laid before him tip to floor, at the hand bones still locked on the hilt—the hands had gripped all their lives, and not loosened in death.

”He never got relieved,” he said.

His own men stood at doors like this—on the wall, at the sluice, in the pit. The day relief didn’t come, this was how they would sit, hands not loosening.

He swallowed the words back, said no more. The hall was so quiet he could hear the swallow.

Liu Dahe crouched to the other side, rubbed a finger over the ash on the armor plate—ash loose, the iron under it sound, not eaten. He looked at the skeleton’s jaw—set, still biting something at the end. After a while he nodded at the skeleton. Pit rule: when you meet a man dead at his post, you nod. He didn’t speak, let the lamp travel once more over the body.

”Let him keep it,” Chen Jin said, voice flat.

That was the disposition, not a regret. No blade taken, no tag taken, no body moved—yesterday one gun opened, today one man seen, enough. What was inside the door was left to those who watched it for them.

Before leaving the hall, Chen Jin gathered the lamps from the cradles, eight of them, lit and carried out. Past the door, he counted them against the frame. Eight, none short—Liu Dahe’s rule, one for one, miss one and the man stays below.

The old stonemason came out last, pushed the door back to its place, the seam the same seam. He worked more fresh oil into the pivot cup, pressed it in.

”A door that opens and closes every day,” he said again. ”The men inside used to walk it every day. This one didn’t make it out.”

The sun was past noon aboveground. Wen Heng’s people boiled water at the tent; she stood outside the white-chalk ring, looking each of the four over as they came up: hands, face, whether they walked steady. No one hurt. Steam off the pots; towels passed hand to hand, no one allowed to take his own. She said one thing: ”Soot in the throat, out the same day or it stays. Each man a bowl of salt water, rinse the throat. Water—boiled.”

The little book stayed closed.

The sun leaned west; the watchers past the alley mouth had gone, the guard’s rope half taken in. The white-chalk ring at the sinkhole, brushed by wind, its edge fainter, but the breath inside still held.

Xiao Mao pulled the old chart from his chest, folded it, and handed it to the works crew. Borrowed three days, due today; not a line added, not a line lost—the line he had matched yesterday, its tail to the west, the same bearing as the shafts, he had kept in his head, not put to paper. The man who took it nodded and locked it in the box, drew a stroke in the ledger with his pencil.

Zhou Zhengting came at dusk, again not stepping into the ring, only standing beyond it a moment, eyes from the stake tops to the frame, then down to the form in his hand. He read it slow, folded it, tucked it into his sleeve, walked two steps, didn’t turn:

”Those six names on the form—keep using them.”

At night, the arsenal’s hammer was silent. Under the lamp, three rubbings lay side by side—the punch marks from the first cradle east, the marks from the skeleton’s armor, and Liu Dahe’s tag, unrubbed. Xiao Mao looked at the first cradle’s; Liu Dahe looked at his own tag; the middle one lay open, no one touching it.

Xiao Mao finished the first cradle’s, reached into his collar, pulled Liu Dahe’s dog tag out a little, and read the row of punch marks on its back by the lamp. Yesterday it had only matched the gun cradle’s hand; today he understood—this hand was called the Candlebearers, and it ran in the same vein as the dead man at the door. The tag came down through Sergeant Lei’s line; Sergeant Lei’s grave was outside the city, his tag long surrendered, but the hand still lived in the pit men’s grip, lived on this skeleton’s armor.

The hand was older than the city above. Sergeant Lei had carried its echo; Liu Dahe carried its shape. And now, in the dark below, it was written on a dead man who’d held a door no one else had held.

He looked up at Liu Dahe. ”Who taught you this hand?”

Liu Dahe rubbed the tag, and after a long moment said, ”My master. He said it’s the old soldiers’ mark—what to keep, what to count.”

Xiao Mao didn’t answer. He tucked the tag back under Liu Dahe’s collar, drew his hand back, and trimmed the lamp wick. Chen Jin gathered the three rubbings, folded them, and put them away. The dog tag, Liu Dahe kept himself.

Under the lamp, the tag still hung on its cord. Yesterday it had been a piece of iron on Liu Dahe’s neck; today it joined the same hand as the skeleton at the door—one dead inside and never out, one still living, hung on a living man’s neck.
