Eternal Forge: Starting with a SSS Rank talent and a Myth Rank Class

Chapter 121: Chapter 121- Leo’s affinity with Undead.

The buffs to mana density and regeneration had returned in full. The mana vein had truly reawakened this time.

The whole chamber felt different now, the atmosphere thick with mana, richer and heavier than it had been even moments before.

Hugh spoke up again. ”It’s back. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappear again like last time.”

Elona shook her head. ”I don’t think it will. This feels permanent.”

She raised one hand and flexed her fingers slowly, watching as a faint warmth shimmered visibly across her palm. ”It’s much denser than before,” she said.

Rook let out a low grunt. ”So the brat really is lucky, then.” He’d asked himself that same question earlier, and now, apparently, he’d settled on an answer.

Elly, meanwhile, worked quietly in the background, cataloguing the new data streaming in and storing it carefully within her database. She turned to Leo. ”Master, the Death Mana Vein has now been registered as a fully active guild facility.”

She paused, checking something further, then continued. ”Both the lightning and undead affinity zones of the fortress are now fully operational and officially part of our guild’s holdings.”

Leo nodded at her report, though his attention had already drifted back to the guardian standing before them.

He had a mountain of questions building up — about the Forge Holders, about whatever ”work” she kept referencing, even about the nature of these affinities themselves.

”How are you so certain I have undead affinity?” Leo asked her directly.

”Oh, you really don’t know?” the guardian said, sounding almost amused. ”I can tell you’ve already been dabbling with the dead for quite some time now. I can sense the presence of soul lingering in your armor, in your boots — and yet you’re still playing dumb about it?”

Leo froze. Suddenly, everything clicked into place.

Soul forging — that was a branch of forging he’d already been quietly working with, one that inherently involved the dead. He understood now, with sudden clarity, exactly what she meant.

The guardian sighed. ”Undead mana and affinity isn’t only about raising the dead, or necromancy in the narrow sense people imagine. It’s far more than that.” She turned toward the well and gestured toward it. ”Look at it properly this time.”

Leo followed her suggestion, turning his forge sight toward the well once more. This time, the heavy weight of death mana had lifted from the chamber, so his forge sight picked up on details he’d completely missed before.

The structural joints of the well weren’t simple seams at all — they were souls, bound directly to the guardian spirit herself. Every single seam carried some trace of deliberate intent behind it.

Even the formations carved throughout the chamber weren’t merely drawn onto the stone. They’d been woven, thread by thread, directly into the very material that made up the chamber and the basin itself.

The guardian spirit continued. ”The Sovereign built all of this herself. As you can see, she didn’t rely on raw mana alone to construct this place.”

Leo’s throat went dry.

He turned back to face her. ”I’ve worked with souls before,” he admitted. ”When I did, I could always feel something inside them. I assumed it was just some kind of energy — soul energy, I called it.”

The spirit guardian shook her head slowly. ”That energy is only where it begins.” Her voice trailed off briefly before she continued. ”Essence gives that energy existence. Memory gives it history.” She waved a hand, and the mana within the well responded, vibrating and pulsing in time with her words. ”Will gives it the capacity to choose. Identity gives it individuality.”

She paused once more, her eyes fixed on Leo. ”And potential — potential gives it everything it’s still capable of becoming.”

Leo stood there, completely dazed, her words echoing through his mind over and over. He felt like he was standing right on the edge of understanding something profound, yet somehow the words managed to make both perfect sense and no sense at all, simultaneously.

His thoughts drifted, unable to settle.

Understanding a soul intellectually was one thing. Actually working with one, shaping it, was an entirely different matter.

While Leo remained lost in thought, the death guardian suddenly appeared directly in front of him without warning. She raised a single finger, glowing with intense purple light, and pointed it straight toward the center of his forehead.

Rook, who’d been watching everything unfold with careful attention, reacted instantly. His sword was already drawn as he moved, arriving in front of Leo and the guardian in the space of a heartbeat, his blade slashing toward the hand reaching for Leo’s head.

An invisible barrier snapped into place and blocked the strike completely. Hugh moved a half-second later, black flame bursting from his hand as he attacked from the opposite side — only to be stopped by the very same barrier.

The guardian let out a dismissive scoff at both attempts. ”Hmph. If I actually wanted you guys dead, all of you would already be dead. You’re nothing but ants standing in front of me.” She sounded genuinely irritated now. ”Relax. I’m not trying to harm him. This is a gift, not an attack.”

With that, her fingertip finally made contact with Leo’s forehead.

Leo saw everything happening around him with perfect clarity, but he found himself completely frozen, unable to move a single muscle, forced to simply watch as her finger closed the last bit of distance.

The moment her fingertip touched his skin, Leo instinctively closed his eyes, bracing for pain. But for one brief instant, nothing happened at all. He opened his eyes again, blinking in confusion.

Then—

BOOM.

Leo felt like his skull was about to split open. He wanted to scream, wanted to drop to the ground and clutch his head, but his body simply refused to obey him, locked completely still.

His mind went utterly blank shortly after.

The sudden flood of an enormous amount of data and knowledge, all pouring in at once, was more than enough to overwhelm him completely.

The others watching could see blood beginning to drip from Leo’s nose, his eyes flushed red from the sheer intensity of the pain.

Still, nobody dared move, not with the guardian’s finger still pressed against his forehead.

Knowledge poured into him relentlessly — a deep, layered understanding of death mana and every conceivable use for it.

Eventually the sensation grew so overwhelming that Leo could no longer tell which thoughts were genuinely his own and which had just been poured directly into his mind moments earlier.

Vision after vision flashed through his consciousness.

Then, gradually, everything faded, and a single clear vision emerged in their place.

He saw a soul — though not the simple glowing orb of energy he’d always perceived souls to be before. Instead, he saw something layered, intricate, built from countless threads woven together into a single structure.

Essence. Memory. Will. Identity. Potential...

Each element existed as its own distinct piece within the soul, and yet none of them could exist independently of the others. They were bound together, inseparable.

He saw souls corrupted and twisted by dark influence. Souls worn thin and weakened by the passage of time. Souls carrying foreign energy lodged deep within them. Souls that had passed through cycles of reincarnation. Souls reshaped again and again by thousands of accumulated experiences. And then he saw death mana flowing around each of them, wrapping them gently in its embrace.

The death mana wasn’t controlling them, wasn’t destroying them. It was preserving them instead — holding together whatever fragments remained of who they’d been while still alive.

Then the knowledge shifted toward the concept of a vessel for the soul. A soul, he understood now, needed something to anchor it — a container of some kind, whether that was a body, a construct, or some other object capable of holding its existence stable.

Vessel and soul were deeply interconnected, each essential to the other. But true compatibility between the two was rare and difficult to achieve. Some vessels simply couldn’t accept certain souls, while some souls proved far too powerful for the vessel meant to contain them. The two needed careful balance, genuine compatibility, in order to coexist without one eventually destroying the other.

The knowledge ended there. No forging techniques were given to him directly. No necromancy spells, no step-by-step instructions on how to raise the dead. And yet Leo somehow understood, with quiet certainty, that he could figure out how to resurrect the dead in his own way, given time.

...

Leo’s vision slowly returned to normal.

The guardian had already stepped back by the time he came to. Leo staggered, his head still spinning, blood still trickling from his nose. Rook and Hugh caught him quickly before he could collapse to the ground.

”Are you okay?” Hugh asked, the rest of the party crowding around him, checking him over with obvious concern.

”I’m fine, guys,” Leo reassured them, steadying himself and finally standing upright on his own again.

He turned and gave the spirit guardian a deep, respectful bow. ”Thank you for your teaching.”

The guardian waved a hand dismissively. ”Don’t mention it. Honestly, I’m a little surprised you didn’t pass out entirely. You’ve got good mental fortitude.”

Leo looked up at her. ”But... there was no actual knowledge in there about raising the undead, or creating them?”

The guardian scoffed. ”What, do you want to change your class to necromancer now?”

”No,” Leo said quickly.

”Good.”

She pointed toward his chest, where his eternal flame still pulsed steadily. ”You already have your own path laid out. What I gave you was just the foundation to get you started. The rest of the path, you’ll have to walk yourself.”

Leo understood exactly what she was getting at. He knew — the Death Sovereign had been the kind of genius that only appeared once in a thousand years. She’d possessed pure affinity for death mana and the undead alone, and every piece of knowledge Leo had just witnessed had been knowledge she’d gained entirely on her own. No one had taught her any of it. She’d carved that entire path by herself, transforming what should have been an impossibly complex natural phenomenon into something structured enough for ordinary people to eventually follow.

The nature of souls was considered far too complicated for most to grasp, and yet she’d mastered it anyway, alone. Something in Leo stirred at the thought, a quiet fire kindling beneath his ribs.

As the knowledge fully settled into him, a fresh series of notifications appeared.
