Rise Of The Lesser-Blood

Julian brought his hands down, the absolute gravity well descending like a falling mountain.

The dark crimson sphere greedily swallowed the surrounding air currents, the sheer, crushing mass of the Crimson Void warping reality itself as it raced toward Thomas’s skull. Pinned against the cold face of the monolithic awakening crystal, Thomas could only watch the incoming void through his swollen, blood-masked eyes, his system progress bar still frozen at an excruciating three percent.

He lacked the speed to dodge. He lacked the density to block.

Vrk—t!

The strike did not connect.A sudden, sharp displacement of air tore through the center of the ring. There was no theatrical flash of light or thunderous impact. In a single microsecond, a figure appeared directly in front of Julian, stepping into the absolute path of the falling mountain with a terrifyingly fluid grace.

The man wore a long, dark trench coat, its high collar pulled up to meet the bottom of a cold, expressionless devil mask. Only a pair of calm, piercing grey eyes could be seen through the eye slits of the visage. Across his shoulders, a sleek mana rifle was leveled with absolute, unyielding precision, its barrel etched with glowing crimson runes that pulsed fiercely against the dimming sky.

It was Peter, the legendary Ghost of Samra. He stood as a towering, unshakeable wall between the two freshmen, his presence alone completely halting the downward trajectory of the gravitational well.

”Stand down, Julian,” Peter said. His voice was soft, almost feminine in its gentle, melodic undertone, yet it carried an underlying, bone-chilling weight that instantly caused the air pressure across the stadium to plateau.

Julian’s arm froze mid-motion, his striking ebony eyes narrowing into slits as he stared down the barrel of the crimson-runed rifle. A look of supreme, unadulterated arrogance and fury twisted his handsome features. He let out a harsh, venomous sneer.

”Today must be my lucky day,” Julian answered, his elegant voice dripping with a dangerous, dark bloodlust. ”Another lesser dares to step into my path and challenge me.”

”F**k around and see.” Peter responded.

Before the standoff could fracture into a bloody exchange of super-tier talents, Instructor Cross violently stepped forward on his elevated marble platform. He did not let the confrontation stretch a single second longer, his battle-scarred face hard as he violently snapped his arm downward.

”Match concluded! Winner: Julian of Class 1-A!” Cross’s magically amplified voice boomed across the wind-swept summit, cutting cleanly through the suffocating tension. ”The final bracket is settled!”

The official announcement resonated across the thousands of quiet spectator benches, but neither of the two figures at the center of the sand moved. The standoff between Julian and Peter remained so incredibly intense that the ambient mana between them crackled like static electricity. Julian’s fingers twitched against his recursive geometric patterns, his Grade S core humming with an aggressive, volatile density as he stared directly into the Ghost of Samra’s cold grey eyes.

He was looking at a hero, a lesser-blood, one of the very few in the kingdom who had bypassed the rules of power.

For five grueling seconds, the silence stretched. Then, Julian let out a sharp, irritated hmph, violently sweeping his hand sideways to withdraw his attack. The massive crimson gravity well dissolved into a faint, swirling mist of red energy, the crushing weight lifting from the arena floor as he turned his back on them completely.

Thomas slumped slightly against the monolithic stone, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps as the blue status lines of the system interface quietly dimmed beneath his eyes. He had been completely outclassed, his body shattered and his progress bar reset, but as he watched the trench-coated lesser hero lower his rifle, a cold, dangerous focus settled deep within his fracturing mind.

He had barely survived the pinnacle of power as far as High-bloods went.

Julian turned his back on the arena floor, his white uniform immaculate as he walked toward the exit tunnels without a single glance backward. The suffocating gravity that had pinned Thomas against the monolithic awakening crystal finally dissipated, leaving the cold high-altitude wind to howl across the fractured sand.

Peter slowly lowered his sleek mana rifle, the glowing crimson runes along the barrel fading into a quiet, dormant dark. The legendary Ghost of Samra stood perfectly still for a second beneath the open sky, his trench coat fluttering slightly in the gale. Then, with a fluid, calculated motion, he turned his devil mask completely toward the back row where Thomas lay.

Through the narrow eye slits of the visage, his calm grey eyes locked onto the battered freshman. Peter didn’t offer a dramatic speech or a patronizing word of comfort to his fellow lesser-blood. He simply gave Thomas a slight, respectful nod a silent validation of the sheer, unyielding grit it took to stand face-to-face with a sovereign elite.

Whoosh.

Before the spectators in the vaulted stone benches could even blink, Peter vanished from the black sand. There was no trace of his energy left behind; he simply ceased to exist in the ring, reappearing instantly back in his isolated section of the stands alongside the other four Horsemen of Calamity, his posture returning to its usual lazy, unbothered stance.

Thomas watched the empty sand where the hero had just stood, his vision blurring rapidly into a dark, pulsing haze of violet and grey. The intense adrenaline that had kept his fractured limbs functioning was flatlining completely. His broken ribs shifted painfully against his lungs, and the long, weeping laceration across his forearm throbbed with a freezing, white-hot heat that threatened to tear his consciousness apart.

Yet, looking at the vacant sand, a genuine, quiet smile broke through the dried crimson masking his face. He didn’t care about the broken bone density or his shredded uniform. He had looked directly into the absolute pinnacle of their world, and he had survived.

His knees buckled, his unrefined balance failing him entirely as his fingers lost their grip on the cool grains. Thomas tipped over sideways, his body crashing heavily onto the black sand as his mind violently slipped into total darkness.

The roaring drone of the thousands of High-blood spectators faded into a dull, distant hum behind his ears. The world turned completely black, his system interface dissolving into a faint blue mist beneath his eyes. But right at the absolute threshold of his consciousness, just before his senses shut down entirely, a soft, familiar weight caught his shifting shoulders.

”It’s okay, I got you, freshman,” a familiar, raspy voice murmured softly directly beside his ear.

The faint, soothing scent of old paper and ink was the absolute last thing Thomas registered before his mind completely flatlined, entering the deep, protective void of emergency hibernation.
