The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Kael reached the Adventure Guild before sunrise and found Galahad waiting for him with a registration ledger under one arm and a cup of something hot enough to steam in the cold morning air. The Guild hall had not fully awakened yet, but it was no longer quiet. Boots crossed the floor behind the open doors, someone dragged a crate across the rear room, and two early contract parties stood near the board whispering over notices while trying not to stare at the prince standing outside with a cane.

Galahad looked first at Kael, then at the cane, then back at Kael. His expression carried enough judgment that Kael almost preferred Anwen’s.

”You brought it.”

”Apparently I enjoy avoiding arguments before breakfast.” Kael adjusted his grip on the cane and glanced toward the horses waiting beyond the Guild yard. ”Is everyone ready?”

”They were ready before you arrived.” Galahad extended the ledger instead of answering anything else. A small metal marker rested against the leather cover, plain except for the registration number stamped into it. ”And before you start thinking this makes you an adventurer of any particular standing, it doesn’t.”

Kael took the marker between two fingers. ”I remember.”

”I know you remember. I am making certain everyone else hears it.” Galahad raised his voice just enough that the nearest clerk, two adventurers by the board, and Mira near the doorway could hear him. ”Kael Aurelius Asterion is registered with the Blackwood Adventure Guild. He currently possesses no Guild rank.”

A man near the contract board looked down at his boots with sudden interest. Mira failed to hide a smile.

Kael slipped the marker into the inside pocket of his coat. ”Satisfied?”

”Not remotely.” Galahad shut the ledger. ”Your assessment begins during this arc.”

Kael’s hand stopped halfway from his coat.

Galahad continued before he could answer. ”Stonebrook does not replace the formal assessment. You will still complete Guild procedure, contract law, reporting, threat classification, party conduct, civilian protection, evidence handling, and the practical portions when Anwen clears you. But field judgment matters, and I would be an idiot to ignore what you do on an actual investigation while deciding whether you can be trusted on Guild work.”

”So you are evaluating me today.”

”I am evaluating everyone today.” Galahad took a drink from his cup. ”The difference is that Iris already has a job. Perrin already has a job. Tavin already has a job. You are the only one who owns the road, funds the Guild, is an Imperial prince, and still somehow needs to prove he knows when not to interfere.”

Mira turned her face away, shoulders moving once.

Kael looked at her. ”You are enjoying this.”

”More than I should.” She gathered two folded reports from a side table and brought them over. ”The road foreman sent another update before dawn. No new collapse since the last measurement, but the western approach sank another finger’s width overnight. No one went near the crack. The watchers obeyed.”

That mattered more than Kael wanted to admit. Yesterday, ordering men away from a danger had been simple. Trusting them to remain away when fear, pride, and curiosity pushed in the opposite direction was something else.

He opened the first report. ”Farmhouses?”

”Both closest households moved to relatives for the night.” Mira tapped the second page. ”No livestock losses. The road remains closed from both approaches. Perrin has already arranged the morning detour for grain and passenger wagons.”

Kael looked toward the yard again.

Perrin Vale stood beside a bay gelding near the gate, speaking with two wagon drivers. His cavalry saber hung at his hip, but he had one hand on the horse’s cheek while the other traced an alternate route in the air. He did not look like a man preparing to investigate sabotage. He looked like a man preventing thirty irritated merchants from creating a second problem while everyone stared at the first.

Good.

Tavin stood farther back with his shield slung over one shoulder, helping one of the engineers secure measuring rods along the side of a packhorse. He was not offering opinions about bridge construction. He was making certain the equipment would arrive intact.

Better.

Iris was nowhere in sight.

Kael frowned. ”Where is Iris?”

”Left fifteen minutes ago.” Galahad did not sound concerned. ”She decided the road would tell her more before twenty people walked over it.”

Of course she had.

Kael refolded the reports and handed them back to Mira. ”Then we leave now.”

Galahad caught his sleeve before he turned. ”One more thing.”

Kael looked down at the hand.

Galahad released him. ”You are House authority at Stonebrook. That gives you the right to close roads, evacuate land, requisition labor in an emergency, order guards, and make decisions affecting Blackwood property. It does not make you the engineer.”

”I know.”

”It does not make you the tracker.”

”I know.”

”It does not make you the healer either.”

Kael’s mouth tightened.

Galahad watched him for a moment. ”That one bothered you.”

”Because I know.”

”Good. Then demonstrate it.”

Kael stepped away from him and headed for the horses. His calf pulled beneath the bandage by the time he crossed the yard, not pain exactly, but a hard reminder from healing muscle that he had already been standing longer than Anwen would approve.

He kept the cane.

That was becoming its own form of discipline.

The ride to Stonebrook took longer than Kael would have allowed before the Caldera.

Perrin set the pace.

Kael noticed it within the first mile, when the road widened between two harvested fields and offered enough clear ground to move faster. Perrin did not increase speed. The mounted escort remained spread around the engineers and equipment wagon, with the horses kept at an even pace that spared the axles and gave everyone time to watch the roadside.

Kael brought his horse alongside him. ”You know we are not escorting treasury gold.”

Perrin glanced at the measuring equipment bouncing gently in the wagon behind them. ”Replacement costs money.”

”The missing man matters more than the instruments.”

”Which is why I am not breaking an axle and stranding the engineers three miles from him.”

Kael looked ahead again.

Perrin shifted one hand on the reins. ”If you want to race, Your Highness, I can point out a flat field when we come back.”

Kael ignored the title deliberately. ”I used to race.”

”I have heard.”

”From whom?”

”People with money.”

That answered far too much.

Kael let the horse fall half a length behind.

Tavin rode on the other side of the wagon. He had strapped his shield behind his saddle so it would not strike the horse’s flank, and every few minutes his eyes moved from the road to the load, checking knots and balance.

No one needed Kael to tell them how to do their jobs.

He had spent enough of the last year believing leadership meant being the first hand on every problem. The Caldera had taught him where that ended.

Theron’s records.

A sealed room.

A man deciding his own rules were inconvenient.

Kael tightened his fingers around the reins until the leather pressed into his palm.

Not this.

Stonebrook was not the Caldera. A missing road worker was not Joren. A cracked riverbank was not a volcanic descent, and an old tunnel was not a mountain full of ash and dead men.

He would not force one disaster to become the shape of every danger that followed.

The western road into Stonebrook had been closed with two wagons turned sideways across it.

Beyond them, the bridge sat lower than Kael remembered.

The change was small enough that someone passing without knowledge might have missed it. Kael did not. The western end of the timber deck sloped toward the river by several visible inches, enough to distort the railing line. One support beneath the near side leaned where it should have stood straight, and fresh cracking ran through the packed earth beside the western stone footing.

No wagons waited at the barricade.

Perrin had already done his work.

A handful of villagers stood farther back anyway. They kept enough distance from the crack to obey the order while still being close enough to see whatever happened.

Among them stood a woman gripping the shoulders of a boy old enough to understand why adults kept looking toward the river and young enough that nobody should have expected him to.

Kael did not ask who they were.

He knew.

The road foreman came forward before Kael dismounted. Mud covered his boots to the calf, but the rest of him looked as though he had not allowed himself to sit since yesterday.

”No change for the last two hours, my lord.” He pointed toward three stakes driven into the earth beyond the bridge. Thin cords stretched from them toward measuring marks near the western footing. ”We marked the bank during the night. The crack widened before dawn, then stopped.”

Kael handed his reins to one of the escort guards and lowered himself carefully. The first step sent a sharp pull through his calf.

Perrin noticed.

Kael pretended not to notice Perrin noticing.

”Where is Iris?” Kael asked.

The foreman pointed toward the river without looking away from the bridge. ”Downstream. She told us not to follow.”

That sounded like Iris.

One of the engineers came up beside Kael and crouched near the first crack without crossing the warning stakes. He was older, broad across the shoulders, with gray dust permanently worked into the lines of his hands. The second engineer remained near the wagon unloading tools.

Kael watched the first man’s eyes move across the bridge.

”Do you want people off the entire bank?”

”I want people off whatever part can kill them.” Kael gestured toward the stone footing. ”Tell me where that starts.”

The engineer did not answer immediately.

Good.

He walked ten paces along the marked boundary, lowered himself near the earth, and pressed one measuring rod into the soil. Then he shifted farther away and repeated the test.

Kael waited.

The woman behind the barricade did not.

”Are you going under there?”

Her voice crossed the road sharper than the morning cold.

Kael turned.

The boy beside her stared at his boots.

The woman looked exhausted rather than frightened now. Fear left visible marks after enough hours—red eyes, stiff shoulders, hands that could not remain still. ”He was supposed to be home before supper.”

Kael stepped toward her, then stopped when his calf objected.

The cane tapped against packed earth.

Her eyes dropped to it.

Kael almost hated the thing for that.

”We are going to find him,” he told her. ”The bridge comes second.”

”You said that yesterday.”

”I meant it yesterday.”

”And today?”

”Today I have people here who know how to reach him without burying anyone else.”

The woman swallowed. Her grip eased on the boy’s shoulders by a fraction.

Kael did not promise that her husband was alive.

He wanted to.

That was precisely why he did not.

A whistle came from downstream.

Every head turned.

Iris climbed over the low riverbank fifty yards below the bridge, bow strapped across her back and mud streaked up one sleeve. She walked toward them with something pinched between two fingers.

”Nobody step on the lower path.”

The foreman froze. ”Why?”

”Because I spent twenty minutes finding the tracks your crew didn’t destroy, and I would like to keep them.” Iris stopped beside Kael and opened her hand.

A curl of pale wood lay across her palm.

Freshly cut.

Kael looked toward the bridge.

Iris followed his gaze. ”Same wood as the replacement beams.”

”You are sure?”

”No.” She closed her fingers. ”I am sure it looks like the same wood. The engineer can tell me whether I am right.”

Kael almost smiled.

That was Iris.

She had never been afraid to know something, and she had never been embarrassed to admit when she did not.

The older engineer took the shaving, rubbed it between thumb and forefinger, then smelled the cut edge.

”Oak.” He looked toward the bridge supports. ”Same stock we used.”

”That proves it came from oak,” Iris answered. ”Not that it came from your bridge.”

The engineer gave her a brief look that contained both irritation and respect.

”Exactly.”

Kael glanced downstream. ”Tracks?”

”Several.” Iris crouched and used one finger to sketch in the mud beside the road. ”Road crew. Villagers. Two dogs. Perrin’s advance rider from last night. Those are easy. One set is not.”

”Why?”

”Different sole. Narrower heel. Square iron nails around the outer edge, but no center hobnails.” She added a second shape beside the first. ”Your road workers use broad-soled boots. The unknown prints start near the bank downstream, disappear on stone, then appear again near the western footing.”

The foreman stepped closer. ”None of my men?”

”I asked you yesterday how many were under the bridge.”

”Six.”

”I checked six pairs of boots this morning.”

His face tightened. ”You checked their boots?”

”I like evidence.”

Kael looked toward the bridge again. ”Did the prints go into the crack?”

”No.” Iris stood. ”They go toward it. Then the ground stops being kind enough to remember.”

A hollow sound interrupted them.

Three knocks.

Kael stopped breathing.

The noise had not come from the bridge deck.

It came lower.

Deeper.

Stone carried it strangely, turning each impact into something that seemed to come from the bank itself.

Three knocks.

A pause.

Then three more.

The woman near the barricade made a sound through her teeth and clutched the boy against her.

Kael moved before he decided to.

The cane struck the road once, twice.

Tavin stepped directly into his path.

”My lord.”

Kael stared at him.

Tavin did not move.

He was not defiant. That somehow made it harder to ignore him.

”The engineers have not cleared the bank.”

Kael looked past him toward the crack.

Another three knocks came from below.

Alive.

Someone was alive.

His body had already decided what came next.

Go.

Find him.

Pull him out.

The thought was so familiar that for one ugly heartbeat ash filled Kael’s mouth instead of river air.

Joren beneath stone.

Blood on black rock.

Darius shouting.

A litter carried uphill through heat.

Kael’s fingers tightened around the head of the cane.

Tavin remained in front of him.

Not blocking a prince.

Holding a line.

Kael breathed once through his nose.

Then again.

”You are right.”

Tavin’s shoulders lowered by less than an inch.

Kael turned toward the engineers. ”How close can we get?”

The older engineer looked at the western bank. ”Not directly under the bridge. The crack is telling us the soil beside the footing has lost support. If there is a void beneath it, putting men on top could bring the rest down.”

The younger engineer had finished unloading a coil of rope and two short support braces. ”We can approach from downstream if the lower bank is solid.”

Iris shook her head. ”Not along the obvious path.”

”Why?”

”Tracks.”

The engineer stared at her.

Iris stared back.

Kael pointed downstream. ”Then mark the tracks first. After that, the rescue takes priority over preserving them.”

Iris nodded once. No argument.

That was the balance.

Evidence mattered.

The man mattered more.

They moved downstream in stages.

Perrin stayed near the road with the escort and began pushing the villagers farther back when more people arrived from Stonebrook. He did it without shouting, using wagons and horses to turn the safe area into a clear boundary rather than expecting frightened people to respect an invisible line.

The engineers went first along the lower route after Iris marked the unknown footprints with small sticks placed well outside each impression. Tavin followed with rope over one shoulder and his shield on his arm, not because he expected an attack, but because the broad face gave him something solid to brace against unstable ground if he needed it.

Kael came behind him.

The slope made the cane nearly useless.

He hated every step of it.

The river ran dark beneath the bridge, swollen from recent rain but not high enough to cover the old stonework along the western bank. From below, the damage looked worse.

One replacement beam had shifted sideways where it rested against the stone support.

Another bore a dark line near its underside.

The older engineer stopped so fast Kael nearly walked into him.

”There.”

He pointed.

Kael followed his finger.

The line across the timber was too straight.

Iris crouched beneath it without touching. ”That is not a split.”

”No.”

The engineer leaned closer. ”Saw cut.”

The words settled heavier than they should have.

Kael had expected it.

Expectation did not make evidence less ugly.

”How deep?”

”Not enough to break immediately.” The engineer traced the air beneath the mark. ”Someone cut from the underside where it would not be visible from the road. Maybe a third of the way through, then let load and water do the rest.”

The foreman had followed as far as the safe boundary. ”New timber.”

The engineer looked at him. ”Yes.”

”We replaced that beam.”

”I know.”

”Three weeks ago.”

”I know.”

The foreman’s face changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

Someone had not merely damaged a bridge.

Someone had taken the work of his crew and turned it into a trap.

Kael understood that anger better than he wanted to.

Iris moved several feet farther along the beam and pointed toward another mark. ”Here too.”

The second cut ran diagonally beneath a brace.

The older engineer cursed under his breath.

Kael crouched despite the pull in his calf. He kept one hand on the cane and leaned close enough to see pale wood beneath the weather-dark surface.

Fresh.

Not yesterday fresh, perhaps, but recent enough that moisture had not darkened it evenly.

”Can normal load explain the rest?”

The engineer nodded toward the shifted footing. ”Once the brace weakened, every wagon worked the cut wider. Then the support moved. The riverbank probably started settling because the load stopped spreading the way it should.”

”Probably?”

”Until I know what is under the bank, that is the word you get.”

Kael looked at him.

The engineer lifted his chin.

Kael nodded. ”Good.”

Behind him, Tavin made a quiet sound of approval.

Kael ignored that too.

The knocking came again.

Closer from here.

Three.

Pause.

Three.

Iris turned toward the bank.

”What if we answer?”

Kael looked at her.

She picked up a loose stone.

The engineer caught her wrist before she could strike the wall. ”Not there.”

Iris raised an eyebrow.

He pointed several feet away at exposed old masonry. ”There. That section is independent of the cracked footing.”

Iris moved to it.

Kael watched the bank.

She struck the stone three times.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Everyone waited.

Three knocks answered.

The woman above the road cried out.

Kael felt something inside his chest loosen.

Iris raised one hand before anyone spoke.

Then she struck four times.

Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock.

Silence.

Kael counted heartbeats.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four knocks answered from beneath the bank.

Tavin exhaled.

The younger engineer whispered, ”Someone is thinking down there.”

”Someone is alive down there,” Kael corrected.

Iris looked at him. ”Those are not the same conclusion.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

She held his gaze. ”We know someone answered. We do not know who.”

The correction annoyed him because she was right.

”Fine.”

”That sounded painful.”

”It was.”

She almost smiled.

The older engineer walked along the exposed stonework, knocking sections with the wooden handle of a tool. The sounds changed as he moved downstream.

Solid.

Solid.

Then hollow.

Everyone stopped.

He struck the same stone again.

Hollow.

The younger engineer came beside him and cleared mud from the lower edge with a short shovel. Beneath the soil lay another line of stone.

Not natural.

Cut.

Squared.

Kael moved closer.

The visible section formed part of an arch no more than four feet high, most of it buried beneath years of sediment and riverbank growth.

The foreman stared down from above. ”That wasn’t there.”

The engineer scraped more mud away. ”It was.”

”I have worked this road fourteen years.”

”And it was here longer than that.”

Kael studied the stones.

Old mortar.

River staining.

Roots pushed between joints.

Not a hidden temple.

Not some impossible buried city.

Infrastructure.

Forgotten because nobody alive had needed to remember it.

”What was it?”

The engineer rubbed mud from one stone. ”Could be an old drainage channel. Could be part of a previous bridge approach. Maybe maintenance access for older supports.”

”Can we enter?”

”Not from here.”

He pointed downstream.

The old masonry continued beneath the bank.

Iris was already moving.

They found the entrance thirty yards farther along where part of the bank had collapsed years ago and brush had grown over the depression.

Without the knocking, Kael might have walked past it.

Without Iris, he certainly would have.

A curtain of roots covered a narrow opening between two old stone walls. Mud and dead leaves filled the bottom. The air that came from inside smelled of wet earth, stagnant water, and something metallic.

The engineer crouched at the entrance.

Kael waited behind him.

Every part of him wanted to ask the same question every few seconds.

Can we go?

He did not.

The engineer tested the first several stones, checked the arch, then used a long rod to probe the floor.

Iris knelt beside the opening and closed her eyes.

Kael watched a strand of loose hair lift beside her cheek.

Wind.

Not enough to move leaves.

Enough for her.

”There is airflow.”

The engineer glanced at her.

”From inside,” Iris continued. ”Weak, but it is moving.”

”No trapped gas pocket near the mouth, then.”

”That is not what I said.”

He rubbed his jaw. ”You are difficult.”

”I practice.”

Kael almost laughed.

The engineer pushed farther inside on hands and knees, inspected the first ten feet, then backed out.

”The entrance is stable enough for one person at a time. The arch farther in looks intact from here. No one touches loose stone. No one leans on the walls. If I tell you out, you come out.”

Kael met his eyes. ”Agreed.”

The man glanced at the cane. ”You should stay outside.”

There it was.

Kael looked into the dark opening.

The knocking came again, faint now that they were near enough to hear the direction.

Someone waited inside.

He looked back at the engineer. ”Because I am lord?”

”Because you are injured.”

Tavin looked carefully at the river.

Iris developed sudden interest in a root.

Kael hated all of them.

”Can I enter without creating additional risk?”

The engineer considered him. ”If you can crawl the first section and walk after the arch rises. Slowly.”

”Then I am going.”

”If your leg fails, I am not stopping a rescue to carry you.”

”Then I will make certain it does not.”

The engineer pointed at him. ”That answer is exactly the kind of answer that makes me regret agreeing.”

Kael shifted the cane under one arm and lowered himself toward the entrance.

His ribs objected immediately.

Good.

At least his body remained committed to honesty.

They entered in order: Iris first after the engineer, then Kael, then Tavin. The younger engineer remained near the entrance with rope while Perrin stayed above coordinating the road and keeping civilians clear.

The first section forced Kael onto one knee.

Cold mud soaked through his trousers.

His calf tightened when he pushed forward.

He ignored the urge to rush.

Ten feet.

Fifteen.

Then the old arch rose enough for him to crouch.

Farther in, he could stand.

The tunnel was exactly what it looked like from outside.

Old.

Practical.

Ugly.

A narrow stone service passage ran beneath the riverbank, with a shallow drainage channel cut along one side. Water covered parts of the floor to the ankle. Rotting wooden brackets clung to the wall where pipes or support tools might once have been stored.

No carvings.

No ancient statues.

No convenient prophecy.

Kael found that almost comforting.

Iris raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

She pointed down.

A boot print marked the mud.

Then another.

Fresh.

Kael lowered the lantern.

The print was narrow.

Square nails around the heel.

The same pattern Iris had drawn outside.

She looked at him.

This time neither of them needed to speak.

The unknown person had been here.

The knocking came again.

Louder.

Three impacts.

Then three.

”Answer,” Kael murmured.

Iris used the flat of her knife against the stone wall.

Four knocks.

Four returned.

”Closer.”

They moved.

The tunnel bent beneath the bank and passed under what Kael guessed was the western approach to the bridge.

Fresh damage appeared everywhere once he knew how to look.

Mud disturbed along the drainage channel.

A scrape on the wall where something heavy had been dragged.

A piece of rope fiber caught against a broken bracket.

Then wood.

A chunk of oak lay half submerged in brown water.

The older engineer picked it up.

His expression hardened.

”Bridge timber.”

Iris crouched beside him. ”Certain now?”

”Certain.”

A squared notch had been cut from one end.

The other bore three shallow scratches.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

”The wedge.”

Iris looked back toward the entrance. ”Same markings.”

The strange piece recovered yesterday had not been random debris.

It had come from here.

The tunnel narrowed ahead.

Then stopped.

A collapse filled most of the passage with stone, mud, and broken timber.

The knocking came from the other side.

Kael moved closer.

”Can you hear me?”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice, rough and weak.

”Yes.”

The word nearly emptied Kael’s lungs.

”Are you the road worker who went missing beneath Stonebrook Bridge?”

A cough came through the rubble.

”Would be embarrassing if I wasn’t.”

Tavin laughed once behind Kael.

It was not a joke worth laughing at.

They laughed anyway.

Kael lowered himself near the collapse. ”Are you injured?”

”My ankle. Maybe my leg. Stone caught it when this came down.”

”Are you bleeding?”

”Not anymore.”

That answer did not comfort Kael.

”How long since you drank?”

The man took several breaths before answering. ”Since yesterday morning.”

Kael looked toward the engineer.

”We open enough to pass water first.” The man was already inspecting the collapse. ”Slowly. Nothing from the top. Those stones are carrying weight.”

Tavin stepped forward. ”Tell me what can move.”

The engineer looked at his shield, then at Tavin’s stance. ”You hold what I tell you to hold. Nothing else.”

”Good.”

No pride.

No pretending.

Tavin planted himself where directed.

The work took nearly an hour.

Kael hated every minute.

They removed stones one at a time.

The engineer chose each piece.

Tavin braced a leaning timber while Iris cleared loose mud with a small shovel. Kael carried stone backward when the weight was safe enough, despite the ache building in his ribs.

Twice the engineer ordered him to stop.

Twice Kael stopped.

That may have been the most irritating part.

A gap opened.

Iris slid a waterskin through.

The man drank.

Then they widened the opening enough for Iris to crawl through first.

Kael waited.

He could hear movement beyond.

A low groan.

Iris’s voice.

”Your ankle is ugly.”

”Thank you.”

”I am not a healer.”

”I had guessed.”

She reappeared at the opening. ”Alive. Conscious. Left ankle trapped under a timber, swelling up the lower leg. I don’t see active bleeding. There is dried blood near the shin.”

The engineer nodded. ”We need the timber lifted, not dragged.”

Tavin looked through the opening.

”I can fit.”

The engineer measured him with his eyes. ”Shield stays.”

Tavin removed it immediately.

He crawled through.

For the next twenty minutes, Kael could do almost nothing.

That was worse than carrying stone.

He listened while the engineer directed from the opening. Tavin wedged his shoulder beneath the trapped timber while Iris cleared mud around the worker’s leg.

Kael wanted to enter.

There was no room.

So he stayed out.

When the timber shifted, the worker screamed.

Kael’s hand closed around the cane until his knuckles hurt.

”Easy,” Tavin called from the other side. ”I have it. Move the leg now.”

”I am moving it.”

”That is not moving.”

”I am aware.”

Iris cut through both of them. ”On three. One, two, now.”

The worker screamed again.

Then Tavin grunted.

”Clear.”

The engineer moved.

They widened the opening another few inches.

A rope went through.

Then, inch by inch, the missing worker emerged from beneath the collapse.

Mud covered him from chest to boots. One trouser leg was torn. His left ankle had swollen badly above the boot, and dried blood darkened the cloth around his shin.

But he was alive.

Kael put one hand under his shoulder.

Tavin took the other side.

Together they moved him back through the tunnel.

The return took longer.

Every jolt hurt the man’s leg.

Every narrow section forced them to stop, reposition, and move again.

When daylight finally appeared ahead, the worker made a sound Kael would remember longer than the knocking.

Not relief.

Something smaller.

A breath that broke.

They carried him out.

The woman came down the safe path before Perrin could stop her.

She reached her husband as the younger engineer and two escort men lowered him onto a blanket.

The boy stopped several feet away.

For a moment, he stared at the mud-covered man as though he did not recognize him.

Then his father lifted one hand.

The boy ran.

Kael stepped away.

That belonged to them.

Perrin crouched near the injured ankle, not touching. ”Transport wagon is ready. Slow route back. No jolting if we can avoid it.”

Kael looked toward the road. ”Healer?”

”Sent for one when you went into the tunnel.”

Of course he had.

Kael nodded.

The worker caught his sleeve before he could move away.

”My lord.”

Kael crouched carefully.

The man’s eyes remained on his family for another second before turning back. ”There was someone down there.”

Kael stilled.

Iris came closer.

”Tell us exactly what happened,” she told him. ”Not what you think happened.”

The worker swallowed.

”Yesterday, me and another man went under the bridge to look at the western support. We saw the brace had shifted. I heard something from inside the bank. Thought it was water.”

”Where?”

”Near the crack. Lower than the footing.” He pointed toward the river with a shaking hand. ”I found the opening downstream. Didn’t know it was a tunnel. Went in because I thought maybe water was cutting under the bridge.”

The foreman closed his eyes.

Kael understood.

A reasonable decision.

A dangerous one.

”What happened inside?” Kael asked.

”I saw a light.”

”Lantern?”

”Covered lantern. Hooded. Someone farther ahead.” The worker rubbed both hands over his face. ”I called out. Asked who was there.”

”And?”

”They ran.”

Iris leaned forward. ”Could you see the person?”

”No face. Coat maybe. Dark. Average height. I don’t know.”

”Man or woman?”

”I don’t know.”

”Weapon?”

”I don’t know.”

”Boots?”

The worker looked at her.

Iris shrugged. ”Worth asking.”

”I heard them. Hard soles.”

”Direction?”

”Deeper in.”

That mattered.

Kael glanced toward the tunnel entrance.

The passage did not end at the collapse.

It continued.

”What caused the collapse?” he asked.

The worker shook his head. ”I followed. Stupid.”

His wife made a sound.

He looked at her. ”I know.”

Kael waited.

The worker continued. ”I heard wood scrape. Then something snapped. The wall moved. I jumped back. Didn’t get far enough.”

”Did you see what they touched?”

”No. There were timbers along the side. Old ones. Some newer.”

The engineer looked sharply toward the tunnel.

The worker noticed.

”That part wasn’t all old.”

Silence settled over the riverbank.

Iris stood.

”I want to see deeper.”

Kael did too.

Immediately.

The desire came clean and hard.

Someone had sabotaged his bridge.

Someone had used forgotten tunnels under Blackwood.

Someone had nearly killed a worker and then fled deeper underground.

The answer might be fifty yards away.

Kael looked at the injured man on the blanket.

Then at his wife.

Then at the bridge.

Yesterday he would have called the pursuit urgent.

Perhaps it was.

Urgency did not make every action correct.

Kael stood.

”No pursuit.”

Iris studied him.

Tavin did too.

The foreman looked surprised.

Kael pointed toward the tunnel. ”We know someone used it. We know it continues. We do not know its condition, length, exits, air quality, or whether the person is still inside. We have one injured civilian, an unstable bridge, and a bank that may still collapse.”

Iris nodded. ”Agreed.”

The answer relieved him more than it should have.

”We document what we can reach safely,” Kael continued. ”Then seal nothing until we know whether water needs that passage. Put a watch on the downstream entrance from outside the collapse zone. Nobody enters alone.”

The older engineer looked toward the bridge. ”I need to inspect the rest of those supports before anyone thinks about reopening the road.”

”You have it.”

”Perrin needs the detour kept active.”

”Perrin?”

From the road, Perrin raised one hand. ”Already doing it.”

Kael stared at him.

Perrin looked offended. ”Did you think I was waiting for permission to stop wagons from driving onto the broken bridge?”

”No.”

”Good.”

Kael turned toward Iris. ”You get the tunnel.”

Her eyes sharpened.

”Mapping only as far as the engineers clear today,” he added.

The sharpness dimmed.

”That was less generous.”

”Survive the disappointment.”

She gave him a thin smile. ”I will attempt it.”

The worker was loaded carefully into the wagon.

His wife climbed beside him.

The boy sat near his father’s shoulder, one hand clenched in the man’s muddy coat.

Kael watched the wagon leave before returning to the tunnel.

The second inspection took less time because they did not need to move a casualty through it.

The collapse where the worker had been trapped remained dangerous, but the engineers found a narrow section along one side where the old arch still held. They cleared enough loose debris to look beyond without widening the breach.

Iris slipped through first.

Kael followed only after the engineer checked it again.

His body had begun to complain in several languages.

His calf throbbed.

His ribs ached whenever he bent.

Mud had dried stiff across one knee.

The cane clicked softly against stone as they moved deeper.

The tunnel widened beyond the collapse.

Not much.

Enough.

The air changed too.

Less stagnant.

More movement.

Iris crouched beside the drainage channel.

”More prints.”

Kael raised the lantern.

Several tracks crossed the mud.

Not one person.

At least three different sizes.

Iris pointed without touching.

”This one is the narrow heel from outside.”

Another print overlapped it.

Broader.

Then another.

”These are recent?” Kael asked.

”Recent enough that the last water didn’t erase them.”

The engineer looked upward. ”The roof here has been repaired.”

Kael followed his gaze.

Two stones differed in color from the rest.

New mortar filled the joint.

Not new as in yesterday.

New compared with everything around it.

Someone had maintained the passage.

They went farther.

Twenty feet.

Thirty.

Then Iris stopped beside the wall.

Fresh tool marks ran across a wooden support fitted between old stone pillars.

The timber had been cut cleanly to size.

Not rotting.

Not forgotten.

On the floor beneath it lay pale curls of wood.

Oak.

The engineer picked one up.

”Same stock.”

Kael stared at the support.

Someone had brought modern bridge timber into an abandoned tunnel beneath Stonebrook.

Or taken timber from the bridge and used it here.

Neither answer improved his morning.

Iris moved her lantern toward the far wall.

A rope ran through an iron ring.

The ring itself was old.

The rope was not.

Mud beneath it had been worn smooth by repeated dragging.

Kael followed the line with his eyes.

It disappeared around another bend.

Iris looked at him.

”The worker was right.”

Kael nodded.

She pointed toward the wall.

There, beneath decades of grime, fresh scratches crossed the stone at shoulder height.

Not random damage.

Marks from tools.

Repeated use.

Someone had been moving through this tunnel often enough to repair it, brace it, carry timber through it, and wear channels into the mud.

The bridge was not the mystery.

It was the door someone had chosen to close.

Kael stood in the damp passage and listened to water move beneath Stonebrook.

Yesterday, the problem had been a failing bridge.

This morning, it had become sabotage.

Now he knew something worse.

The sabotage had been done by people who knew what lay beneath his land better than he did.

He looked at Iris.

”Document everything.”

She nodded and pulled a small charcoal stick from her field pouch.

Kael turned back toward the fresh tool marks. His leg hurt, his clothes were muddy, and somewhere above them the western road remained closed.

But the missing man was alive.

That came first.

Now the rest belonged to them.

Someone had wanted Stonebrook’s road closed badly enough to cut its supports from underneath.

Tomorrow, Kael intended to find out who benefited from that decision.
