The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

”Clear the collapse.”

Galahad did not raise his voice when he gave the order. He did not need to, because the fourth impact from the Ash-King’s claw struck the gallery mouth before the words had finished echoing, throwing broken basalt across the floor and reminding everyone that hesitation had already become expensive.

Kael turned away from the entrance and faced the rear obstruction. The collapse filled nearly the entire gallery from wall to wall, a mass of black stone, broken support timbers, old iron braces, and gray ash that had filtered through cracks over time. Some of the rocks were small enough for two people to move. Others were larger than Kael. Above them, fractured stone pressed downward in layers that made the obstruction look less like debris and more like a wall the mountain had built accidentally.

Seven survivors waited between that wall and the Ash-King.

One man could not put weight on his left leg. Another had a bandage around his head darkened by old blood. A woman near the back held her left arm tight against her ribs while two others coughed into cloth masks gray with ash. None of them looked ready to cross the open basin again, and none needed to be told what happened if the gallery entrance failed before the rear route opened.

Kael called the System without looking away from the collapse.

[Structural Scan]

Obstruction depth: variable

Primary load-bearing compression points detected

Secondary void: probable beyond obstruction

Warning: removal of highlighted upper stones may trigger progressive collapse

Geothermal heat source beneath lower-right debris field

Recommended action: controlled excavation

Better than nothing.

Kael pointed toward the upper section. ”Nobody touches those three stones.”

Vance followed his finger. ”Why?”

”They’re carrying more than they look like.”

”You sure?”

”Moderate confidence.”

Vance gave him a hard look. ”Moderate.”

”That is what I have.”

The Ash-King struck the entrance again.

Darius turned before the stone finished falling. He moved toward the gallery mouth with his sword already in hand, placing himself just behind the remaining basalt lip rather than directly inside the opening. The position let him see enough of the creature outside without giving its claws a straight line to his body.

Vance looked at him, then at Kael. ”You trust moderate confidence with seven lives?”

Kael crouched beside the first movable slab. ”More than pretending certainty.”

Something changed briefly in Vance’s expression.

Then he bent and took the opposite side of the stone.

”Lift.”

They lifted.

Pain stabbed under Kael’s ribs immediately. He changed his grip rather than dropping the weight, got his legs beneath him, and helped Vance shift the slab far enough for two survivors to drag it aside.

Galahad divided the work without wasting time. ”Three on debris. Two move what we clear. Injured stay against the left wall, away from the ceiling fracture. Iris, find me another weakness in that blockage. Sera, entrance support. Veyra, do not use that focus unless someone is about to die.”

Veyra’s hand stopped over the metal rod beneath her cloak. ”You’ve become possessive.”

”I’ve become interested in not collapsing the tunnel.”

”Reasonable.”

She went to the injured instead.

Sera moved beside Darius with one arrow already nocked.

Seven usable arrows remained in the quiver after the drake fight and the earlier shot beneath the jaw. She had not drawn another yet. Kael knew the number because he had watched her lose one, not because she had announced it.

Outside, the Ash-King moved through its own cloud.

Only fragments of it appeared through the entrance.

A black foreleg.

Part of a skeletal jaw.

Smoke leaking from hollow spines.

Then nothing.

The creature had learned that its body could not fit.

That did not mean it had stopped trying.

Darius shifted his stance.

No flourish.

No wasted movement.

His injured shoulder remained lower than normal, but the sword stayed between the opening and everyone behind him.

The Ash-King’s claw came through.

Three talons scraped stone.

Darius did not meet the strike head-on.

He stepped diagonally, caught the inside line of one talon with Aura-reinforced steel, and turned the limb just enough that the claw struck the right wall instead of sweeping across the gallery.

Stone exploded.

Darius’s boots slid six inches.

His wounded shoulder jerked.

He did not chase the retreating claw.

He reset.

Sera watched the opening.

”No shot.”

Darius nodded once. ”Good.”

Kael heard both of them while pulling loose rock from the collapse.

The difference between survival and panic had become strange things now. A sword angle. One saved arrow. A stone left untouched because the System only had moderate confidence.

Iris crawled onto the lower left side of the debris rather than climbing over it. She pressed one ear near a narrow gap, listened, then pushed a knife blade between two stones.

”Air.”

Galahad looked over. ”Beyond?”

”Yes.”

”How much space?”

”Enough that the ash is moving through.”

That was good and bad.

The collapse was not solid.

There was an opening beyond.

It also meant the Ash-King’s gas could eventually follow them through.

Iris withdrew the knife and pointed at a timber trapped beneath three smaller rocks. ”This beam isn’t carrying the ceiling anymore.”

Kael scanned.

[Support assessment: degraded / non-primary]

”System agrees.”

Vance glanced over. ”Moderate?”

”High.”

”Better.”

Rask would have laughed if he were there.

Kael almost did.

Another impact struck the gallery.

This one came lower.

Darius stepped back as the Ash-King’s talon broke through a section of the left lip. Sera moved with him, keeping the bow raised while gray ash rolled through the new opening around the creature’s claw.

The air changed immediately.

Kael smelled it from the rear.

Dry bitterness.

Sulfur.

Hot stone.

Galahad pulled cloth over his mouth. ”Cover up.”

Everyone did.

The seven survivors already had theirs ready.

That worried Kael more than if they had hesitated.

They had practiced this.

Darius struck.

Not at the claw.

At a cracked piece of stone above it.

His blade hit the fracture.

Aura drove through.

The slab dropped onto the Ash-King’s forelimb.

The creature jerked.

The motion tore the claw out of the gallery and carried half the broken lip with it.

A sound came from outside.

Not a roar.

A deep, dry vibration that Kael felt through his hands where they rested against the debris.

Sera drew.

The creature’s head appeared.

Black eye.

Tiny white pupil.

Too brief.

She released tension without firing.

Vance saw.

”You had the eye.”

”No.”

”It was visible.”

”For half a second.”

”That can be enough.”

Sera kept watching the opening. ”Not for that shot.”

Vance looked at her.

Then back outside.

He did not argue.

Kael grabbed the timber Iris had marked.

”Help me.”

One of the less injured survivors joined him.

Together they dragged.

The timber shifted three inches.

Stopped.

Kael changed angle.

His ribs screamed.

The survivor planted both boots.

”Again.”

They pulled.

The beam tore free.

Three smaller rocks dropped into the space it had occupied.

Nothing above moved.

Good.

A dark gap appeared.

Iris immediately went flat and looked through.

”What?”

Galahad asked from behind her.

”Passage.”

”How big?”

”Not enough.”

Vance came over, breathing harder now. ”Can we make it enough?”

Iris touched the stone around the gap. ”Maybe.”

Galahad looked toward Kael.

Kael opened the scan wider.

The highlighted pressure points changed.

A stone near the center glowed in the System’s overlay.

Not dangerous itself.

Locked between two that were.

If they removed it, the upper weight might settle.

If they cracked it incorrectly, the whole face could come down.

Kael stared.

Vance followed his gaze.

”You found something.”

”Maybe.”

”You keep saying that word.”

”Everyone does.”

The Ash-King’s chest began to glow.

Sera saw it first.

”Breath!”

Everything stopped.

Darius turned.

Through the broken gallery mouth, pale light pulsed under cracks in the Ash-King’s neck.

Not ember-red.

Brighter.

Too bright.

Vance moved instantly.

”Get away from the entrance!”

Darius did not.

Of course he did not.

He grabbed a broken basalt slab leaning against the wall and dragged it across the narrowest part of the opening.

Vance joined him.

Together they shoved.

The slab scraped over stone.

Too heavy.

Not enough time.

Kael ran toward them.

Galahad caught his arm.

”Kael.”

”We need a barrier.”

”I know.”

Kael looked at the slab.

Then at the floor.

Then understood.

Not a wall across everything.

An angle.

”Milo would redirect it.”

Galahad stared at him.

”Milo isn’t here.”

”No.”

Kael pulled free.

”I am.”

He reached the slab and drove both hands toward the floor.

Cold ripped through his arms.

”Ice Wedge.”

Ice burst from the stone beneath the slab, not straight upward but diagonally.

The basalt shifted.

Darius understood first.

He pushed with Aura.

Vance threw his weight beside him.

The slab tilted across the gallery mouth like a shield instead of a door, leaving space beneath and along one side.

Not sealed.

Deflected.

The Ash-King exhaled.

The impact hit like a building falling.

Ash slammed into the angled slab.

The whole gallery shook.

Kael’s Ice Wedge cracked instantly.

Heat tore through the stone.

A gray stream blasted through the lower gap and rolled across the floor.

”UP!”

Veyra shouted from the rear.

The survivors climbed onto the higher debris edges and wall shelves rather than crouching low.

Toxic gas followed the ash along the floor.

Darius braced one foot behind him.

The slab moved.

One inch.

Two.

Kael reinforced the wedge.

Ice formed.

Melted.

Formed again.

His mana drained faster than it should have.

The Caldera devoured cold.

Sera stood fifteen feet behind Darius with the bow fully drawn.

Nothing to shoot.

Gray.

Only gray.

The ash blast continued.

Kael’s eyes began watering.

His sleeve covered his mouth.

Useless against gas.

Better against particulate.

He saw Darius’s boots sliding.

Vance’s face turned red from effort.

The slab moved again.

”Kael!”

Galahad pointed toward the collapse.

They could not spend everything holding the front.

Kael knew.

He hated it.

He cut the Ice Wedge.

”Darius!”

”I have it.”

”Vance?”

”Move!”

Kael moved.

He ran back through ankle-deep ash, climbed the lower rubble, and dropped beside the System-marked stone.

The central block was roughly the size of his torso.

Too large to lift cleanly.

Too tightly wedged to pull.

Iris crouched beside him.

”Crack it?”

”Yes.”

”Where?”

Kael examined the System overlay.

A thin line appeared along the right edge.

[Existing fracture]

Propagation direction: favorable if force remains controlled

He touched it.

Hot.

Too hot.

Then the solution came.

Not brute force.

Temperature.

Kael placed two fingers against the fracture.

”Cold Snap.”

Frost raced into the crack.

The stone clicked.

Once.

Iris immediately moved back.

Kael held the cold.

The outside of the block cooled faster than the deeper rock.

Thermal stress built.

The fracture widened.

Not enough.

Kael pushed harder.

Pain throbbed behind his eyes.

The crack snapped another inch.

Vance shouted from the entrance.

”Slab!”

Sera answered, ”Moving!”

Kael did not look.

He could not.

If he looked, he would leave the stone.

If he left the stone, the seven might die even if Darius held the Ash-King forever.

Galahad knew it too.

”Stay on the collapse!”

The ash blast weakened.

Not stopped.

Weakened.

Sera shifted left.

For the first time, a line opened through the gray.

The Ash-King’s mouth.

Still open.

Pale glow inside.

Sera released.

The arrow disappeared.

A heartbeat later the Ash-King jerked its head.

The ash stream broke sideways.

Not stopped.

Disrupted.

The pressurized cloud slammed into the outer wall instead of directly into the gallery.

Darius and Vance shoved.

The basalt slab moved back into position.

Sera lowered the bow.

Six arrows.

She did not look at the quiver.

Not yet.

Darius coughed hard.

Vance wiped ash from his eyes.

”Good shot.”

Sera nocked another arrow.

”I know.”

Milo would have been proud.

Kael almost smiled.

Then the central stone cracked.

”Iris.”

She moved.

They wedged a pry bar into the split.

Kael did not know where it had come from.

Someone had found one.

Good enough.

Iris leaned.

Kael took the other side.

The stone separated.

A piece dropped inward.

Hot air rushed through.

The gap widened.

A person could crawl through.

Barely.

Galahad saw.

”First survivor.”

The man with the injured leg shook his head.

”Others first.”

Galahad pointed at him.

”You first.”

”I can wait.”

”You cannot run.”

The man’s face hardened.

Galahad stepped close.

”This is not honor. It is traffic. You move slower, so you go while the opening is still stable.”

That argument ended.

Two survivors helped the injured man into the gap.

He crawled.

Slowly.

Painfully.

The passage beyond sloped downward for several feet, then widened enough that someone on the other side shouted that there was room.

One through.

The Ash-King struck the entrance again.

The angled slab jumped.

Darius’s sword came up.

The creature’s claw punched around the edge.

He met it with a Glacial—

No.

Kael stopped the instinctive thought.

Darius.

Sword.

Aura.

Not his technique.

Darius cut across the smallest joint between two talons.

The blade did not sever anything.

The Ash-King’s hide was too dense.

But the strike changed the angle.

The claw hit the floor.

Darius stepped on the inside line.

His sword drove downward into a thinner crease.

The Ash-King pulled.

Darius let it.

He did not cling to the attack.

Preserve decisions.

The blade came free before the claw could drag him through the opening.

Second survivor through.

Then the woman holding her ribs.

Third.

The ash level on the gallery floor deepened.

Each step raised gray clouds.

The seven had become six.

Then five.

Kael stayed near the collapse, widening loose edges with his knife instead of magic.

Galahad controlled order.

”Head wound next.”

The bandaged survivor crawled.

Fourth.

Veyra helped the coughing man behind him.

”Slow breathing.”

He laughed weakly. ”Excellent advice.”

”Would you prefer difficult advice?”

”No.”

”Then crawl.”

Fifth.

The Ash-King vanished from the entrance.

That was worse.

Sera lowered her bow slightly.

”Where?”

Vance moved toward the gap.

Darius caught his shoulder.

”Wait.”

Vance looked at him.

Darius listened.

Nothing.

The ash outside shifted.

No wingbeat.

No claw.

No breath.

Vance’s face changed.

”Above.”

The ceiling exploded.

Not the whole ceiling.

A section near the entrance.

The Ash-King had climbed onto the ridge over the gallery.

Its weight fractured the basalt from above.

A slab dropped.

Darius moved before anyone else.

He struck the falling stone sideways with Aura.

Not to stop it.

To change where it landed.

The slab smashed into the right wall.

Fragments flew.

One hit Kael across the cheek.

Another struck a survivor in the thigh.

The man screamed and collapsed.

Galahad was there instantly.

”Can you move?”

”I—”

”Can you move?”

The survivor tried.

His leg folded.

Blood spread through torn cloth.

Kael reached him.

The wound was not arterial.

Probably.

He opened Blood Sensing.

Heat.

Pulse.

Flow.

His perception narrowed to the injured leg.

[Bleeding: moderate]

[Major vessel compromise: not detected]

Kael grabbed the wound.

”Hold him.”

Veyra held the survivor’s shoulders.

Kael used Emergency Coagulation.

Blood slowed.

Not healed.

Controlled.

The survivor groaned through clenched teeth.

Kael’s own head spun briefly.

Too much fatigue.

Too many systems.

”Can he crawl?”

Galahad asked.

Kael looked at the wound.

”Yes.”

The survivor stared at him.

Kael corrected.

”With help.”

Better.

Galahad nodded.

”Two with him.”

Sixth survivor entered the gap supported by another.

That left one.

No.

Two.

One injured man and one woman refusing to leave until he did.

Galahad pointed.

”You.”

The woman shook her head.

”He can’t—”

”He is going.”

”We go together.”

Galahad looked at the narrow opening.

”One at a time.”

Another ceiling crack snapped.

The Ash-King’s weight moved overhead.

The entire gallery groaned.

No time.

The injured man grabbed the woman’s wrist.

”Go.”

She stared.

He tightened his grip.

”Go.”

She crawled.

Seventh through.

Now the injured man.

Galahad and Kael got him to the opening.

He tried to bend his damaged leg.

Failed.

The gap was too narrow.

”Armor,” Iris said.

The man wore a reinforced leather hip guard with iron plates.

Kael cut the straps.

The guard dropped.

Still tight.

”Turn him.”

They rotated him onto his side.

The man screamed.

Kael heard the ceiling crack again.

Darius shouted, ”MOVE!”

Kael shoved.

Galahad pulled from the other side as far as the opening allowed.

The man stuck at the hips.

”Again.”

Kael pushed.

The survivor screamed.

Stone broke above.

The Ash-King’s claw came through the ceiling.

Not the entrance.

The ceiling.

Three black talons tore downward fifteen feet behind them, punching through rock and dragging a rain of stone into the gallery.

Veyra moved.

Her hand went to the damaged focus.

Galahad shouted, ”NO!”

She stopped.

Good.

One thermal shot into a fractured ceiling would kill all of them.

Iris grabbed the survivor’s belt.

”Push on three.”

Kael nodded.

”One.”

They pushed on one.

The man slid through.

Galahad fell backward with him.

Eight rescued.

No.

Seven from this gallery.

All seven.

Kael turned.

Now the rescuers had to leave.

The claw ripped sideways.

Stone screamed.

The rear gap narrowed as debris shifted above it.

Iris went first.

Then Veyra.

Sera backed toward the opening without lowering her bow.

Darius remained at the front.

Vance beside him.

Galahad looked at Kael.

”You.”

Kael shook his head.

”You.”

Galahad’s expression became dangerous.

”I am mission lead.”

”And you need to be on the other side organizing them.”

”You need to stop arguing with correct orders.”

The ceiling groaned again.

Kael hated him.

”Fine.”

He crawled.

The passage scraped over his armor.

His ribs felt like someone had placed a knife between them and twisted.

He reached the other side.

Galahad followed.

Then Sera.

Darius and Vance remained.

Kael turned immediately.

”Darius!”

Darius did not look back.

”Move them.”

Kael swore.

The Ash-King’s head appeared at the ruined gallery mouth again.

Too much of it this time.

One black eye.

The cracked scales of its cheek.

Smoke pouring around its neck.

Its tiny white pupil fixed on Darius.

The chest began to glow.

Vance saw.

”So much for leaving.”

Darius shifted his sword.

”Go.”

”You first.”

”No.”

Vance laughed once.

Even there.

Even then.

”You really are exactly as annoying as the stories.”

Darius looked at him.

”What stories?”

”Later.”

The glow brightened.

Sera crawled halfway back toward the opening.

Kael grabbed her boot.

”What are you doing?”

”Shot.”

”No.”

”Throat.”

”You have six.”

She looked over her shoulder.

”Then I have six chances to matter.”

The words hit something deeper than the moment.

Kael released her boot.

Not because he liked it.

Because she was right.

Sera pressed herself beside the gap.

Could barely see.

Ash moved.

The Ash-King drew breath.

Darius and Vance ran.

Not toward the creature.

Toward the collapse.

Sera waited.

Kael watched her hand.

No shaking.

The pale glow inside the Ash-King’s mouth intensified.

Sera drew fully.

She had perhaps one second.

Maybe less.

The head shifted.

Wrong angle.

She did not fire.

The breath started.

Sera moved the bow two inches.

Released.

The arrow crossed the gallery as a dark line through gray.

It struck inside the lower throat.

The Ash-King’s head jerked.

The breath detonated early.

Ash blasted into the ceiling.

Rock disintegrated.

Darius dove through the rear opening.

Vance came behind him.

The gallery collapsed.

Stone slammed into stone.

Hot air punched through the passage.

Kael threw one arm over his face.

Ash rolled through the remaining gaps.

Then darkness.

No Ash-King.

No entrance.

Only the sound of stone settling behind them.

Sera lay on her side.

Bow still in hand.

Five arrows remained.

She stared at the collapsed opening.

Kael stared at her.

She did not count.

Not yet.

Darius coughed.

”Everyone?”

Galahad answered from farther down the passage.

”Move before we find out the mountain dislikes this tunnel too.”

Good enough.

They moved.

The passage beyond the collapse was older than the gallery.

Narrow.

Steep.

Air flowed from somewhere ahead.

That mattered more than comfort.

The rescued survivors formed an ugly line through the dark.

Those who could walk helped those who could not.

Veyra supported the man with the head wound.

Iris took the front.

Galahad moved between the injured instead of leading from one end.

Kael stayed near the survivor whose leg he had coagulated.

Darius and Vance took the rear.

Sera moved between them and Kael.

Five arrows.

The number lived in the silence whether she said it or not.

After ten minutes, the passage reached an old maintenance junction.

Mara’s mechanical line was there.

Broken.

No signal.

Iris inspected the floor.

”Traffic.”

Vance came forward.

”Recent?”

”Yes.”

”Human?”

”Mostly.”

That word again.

Mostly.

Kael almost complained.

Didn’t.

They followed.

The route bent north.

The air became cooler.

Not cool.

Less murderous.

A faint metallic strike came through stone.

One.

Pause.

Two.

Pause.

One.

Vance stopped.

Mara’s signal.

He struck a support beam with the pommel of his weapon.

One.

Two.

One.

The answer came faster.

Alive.

Connected.

Galahad exhaled.

”How far?”

Vance looked at the old markings.

”Forward hold, maybe thirty minutes with wounded.”

Nobody celebrated.

Thirty minutes was still thirty minutes in the Caldera.

They walked.

The mountain gave them two more tremors.

Neither caused a collapse.

One survivor vomited from gas exposure.

Another nearly fainted.

Kael used no more magic than necessary.

Darius’s shoulder bled through the fresh bandage.

Vance’s right hand shook once when he thought nobody was watching.

Kael saw.

Stored it.

Sera’s bowstring had collected ash again.

She cleaned it while walking whenever the passage widened enough.

Five arrows.

Still five.

The forward hold heard them before seeing them.

People came to the junction.

Mara first.

Rask behind her despite being ordered to rest.

Milo farther back, upright only because he was leaning against the wall.

Mara counted.

Not the expedition.

The rescued.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

Her face changed.

”All?”

Galahad nodded.

”All seven.”

The hold broke.

Not into cheering.

Something quieter.

People sat down.

People covered their faces.

Someone laughed.

Someone cried.

One of the rescued survivors walked directly into another person’s arms and nearly knocked both of them over.

Mara closed her eyes.

Rask looked toward Vance.

Vance nodded.

Nothing else.

Milo found Sera.

His eyes went first to her face.

Then bow.

Then quiver.

She noticed.

”Don’t.”

Milo leaned against the wall.

”I didn’t say anything.”

”You were going to.”

”Five?”

Sera stared at him.

He smiled weakly.

”I accept my death.”

She almost smiled.

Then her expression changed.

Her fingers touched the quiver.

Five.

Not eight.

Not nine.

Not thirty-six.

Five.

Milo watched.

Sera took her hand away.

”Five.”

He nodded.

No joke.

Not this time.

Kael saw it.

Something was building there.

Not magic yet.

Need.

Memory.

A problem that would eventually demand an answer.

Mana Weaving did not awaken because someone wanted a stronger attack. Advanced ranged fighters gathered ambient Mana Motes and shaped those motes into temporary ammunition only when they actually reached that power, and some could spend an entire life without doing so.

Sera was not there yet.

But she was getting close.

The System appeared.

[Deep Caldera Rescue Objective Updated]

Ventilation Station: recovered

Transfer Cut: recovered

Service Pocket: recovered

Lower Gallery: recovered

Confirmed living personnel remaining in listed rescue sectors: 0

Kael stared.

Zero.

For the first time since the missing-person search had expanded into the lower Caldera, there was no confirmed living person still waiting in one of the mapped rescue sectors.

Rellan remained dead below.

His body still needed recovery.

Joren remained missing.

Veyra’s teacher remained unresolved.

Those were real.

But the people Vance had said would die if they waited?

They had them.

Kael closed the System.

Finished.

One part.

Actually finished.

Galahad looked toward Vance.

”We evacuate.”

The room changed again.

Vance did not answer.

Kael noticed immediately.

Darius did too.

Galahad repeated himself.

”The rescue is complete. We move everyone toward the upper routes while they still exist.”

Vance looked at the map.

”No.”

Rask straightened.

Mara stopped.

Kael’s hand did not move toward his sword.

Not yet.

Galahad’s face hardened.

”Explain.”

Vance rested both hands on the table.

”If we leave now, the Ash-King does not stay here.”

Milo looked tired enough to be angry about thinking.

”What makes you sure?”

Vance pointed toward the drake-movement marks.

”It has already expanded farther from the inner basin than it has in years.”

Iris came closer.

”That could be geothermal pressure.”

”Yes.”

”Could be territory pressure.”

”Yes.”

”Could be both.”

”Yes.”

Vance looked at Kael.

”The Caldera is destabilizing. Its old territory is becoming harder to remain in, so it moves outward. Every drake beneath it moves outward too.”

Kael remembered the mature track near Westbrook.

The dead vegetation.

The western roads.

Bastin’s camp.

”If we evacuate everyone,” Kael said, ”the creature may eventually follow the same direction as the displaced drakes.”

”May.”

Darius used the word deliberately.

Vance met his eyes.

”Yes.”

Good.

No false certainty.

Galahad folded his arms.

”That does not automatically mean we fight it today.”

”No.”

Vance looked around the hold.

”Today we breathe.”

Milo lifted one hand weakly.

”My favorite strategy.”

Vance ignored him.

”Then we prepare the fourth attempt.”

There it was.

Kael looked at the rescued people.

Then the wounded.

Then Darius.

Sera.

Milo.

Iris.

Galahad.

Veyra.

Rask.

Mara.

Vance.

The fourth attempt.

Not a rescue improvised under pressure.

Not running through ash because someone remained trapped.

A deliberate decision to kill the thing creating the disaster around them.

Kael looked toward Vance.

”You tried three times.”

”Yes.”

”You lost people every time.”

”Yes.”

”And now you think adding us changes that.”

Vance’s eyes moved over Kael’s group.

”Not by itself.”

”Then what changed?”

Vance looked toward the inner-Caldera map.

”We know the landing weakness now.”

Darius said nothing.

”We know more about the airflow.”

Milo sighed.

”We know the throat can be disrupted during an ash discharge.”

Sera’s fingers touched the bow.

”We know where not to fight it.”

Galahad watched him.

Vance continued.

”And we know the mountain is giving us less time than we thought.”

Kael studied him.

All true.

Not necessarily complete.

Theron Vance had wanted the Ash-King dead before Kael arrived.

That had not changed.

Kael still did not know every reason why.

But the creature was moving outward.

The drakes were already reaching Blackwood routes.

The Caldera was becoming less stable.

And if they simply walked away now, they might only be moving the battlefield east.

Kael looked at Galahad.

Not Vance.

Galahad understood.

”We rest first.”

Vance’s mouth tightened.

”How long?”

”Long enough to stop pretending the people in this room are fresh.”

”Hours?”

”Yes.”

”The mountain may not give us hours.”

”Then we adjust if the mountain changes.”

Vance stared.

Galahad stared back.

Then Theron nodded.

”Three.”

Galahad shook his head.

”Four.”

”Three.”

”Four.”

Milo whispered to Sera, ”Here we go.”

Sera whispered back, ”Quiet.”

Vance looked at Darius as though seeking sanity.

Darius said, ”Four.”

Vance’s expression flattened.

Kael smiled.

”Outvoted.”

”You are a prince.”

”Apparently that doesn’t help here.”

”It shouldn’t.”

The answer came too quickly.

Kael’s smile faded slightly.

Interesting.

Vance noticed.

Neither man pursued it.

Not yet.

Galahad put both hands on the map.

”Four hours. During those four hours we eat, treat injuries, inspect equipment, study every route and every failed attempt, and decide what the fourth attempt is actually trying to do.”

Vance looked at him.

”Kill it.”

Galahad shook his head.

”That is an outcome.”

Silence followed.

Galahad tapped the map.

”I want the plan.”

Theron Vance stared at him for several seconds.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

But genuinely.

”Fine.”

The Ash-King moved somewhere beyond the walls.

They could not hear it.

That was worse.

But for the first time since Kael learned the creature existed, nobody in the forward hold was still waiting for rescue in the mapped lower sectors.

They had finished that work.

Now came something different.

Five arrows remained in Sera’s quiver.

Milo could barely cast.

Darius’s shoulder was open again.

Kael’s ribs hurt every time he breathed too deeply.

Galahad had been limping for days.

Veyra’s focus had one dangerous shot left.

The Iron Vanguard had already failed three times.

And somewhere in the inner Caldera, a corpse-like giant walked through gray ash while smoke leaked from its spine and the mountain cracked beneath its feet.

The fourth attempt would not begin until they understood exactly what they were asking exhausted people to survive.

Then, and only then, they would go kill the Ash-King.
