The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The wagon changed everything without making anyone safe.

For the first time since the expedition had descended beneath the western forest, Tovin did not have to be carried by four exhausted people over every root, incline, and broken patch of stone. Bastin’s charcoal wagon was ugly, old, and still leaned slightly toward the wheel they had dragged from the mud, but once the empty baskets were stacked along the sides and blankets were folded beneath the wounded, it became the most valuable thing on the road. Tovin lay nearest the front where the healer could walk beside him and reach his chest without climbing into the wagon. Lysa sat against the opposite rail with her injured ankle elevated, while Derren occupied the rear corner and complained that the charcoal dust beneath the blankets was entering places charcoal had no business reaching.

Bastin looked over his shoulder from the driver’s bench. ”You spent days missing underground and came back complaining about my wagon?”

Derren shifted, winced, then made the mistake of attempting to look dignified while lying beneath two blankets with half his body bandaged. ”I complained before I disappeared too. Consistency is important.”

”That is the first true thing you’ve said since I found you.”

”I knew you missed me.”

Bastin faced the road again. ”I missed Nella.”

The humor vanished without anyone choosing to remove it.

Derren’s face settled.

The wheels rolled through another pair of muddy ruts before he answered. ”So did I.”

Bastin nodded once.

Nothing else needed saying.

Kael walked beside the wagon for several minutes after that, close enough to hear Tovin breathe and far enough from Bastin that the older man did not feel obligated to entertain a prince. The charcoal road had widened as they traveled east, but the forest remained thick on both sides. Tall pines mixed with broader trees whose roots had lifted parts of the road into uneven ridges. Old charcoal markers appeared every few hundred paces—blackened posts, shallow drainage channels, and once the remains of a stone shelter that had lost its roof long before Kael ever inherited Blackwood.

He had owned this land for months.

He had never seen most of it.

That thought bothered him more now than it once would have.

Owning a territory on paper was easy.

Walking through it was different.

The road dipped.

Bastin slowed the wagon.

Darius moved automatically toward the lower wheel and placed one hand on the frame in case it slipped. Rask took the opposite side without being asked. The two men did not look at each other.

They simply did the work.

Kael noticed.

So did Galahad.

Neither commented.

Ahead, Iris disappeared around a bend, then returned less than a minute later.

”Clear for another quarter mile.”

Galahad nodded. ”Anything moving?”

”Deer. One fox. No drakes.”

Milo walked several paces behind them and raised his head. ”I would like to officially recognize the fox for respecting boundaries.”

Sera glanced at him. ”You’re jealous of a fox now?”

”It is not carrying anything, protecting anyone, being chased by altered drakes, or walking toward a camp that will probably have another problem.”

”You don’t know that.”

”I have learned the pattern.”

Bastin looked back again. ”Camp has stew.”

Milo stopped.

Everyone behind him nearly walked into him.

Sera caught his sleeve and pulled him forward. ”Keep moving.”

Milo stared at Bastin as if the older charcoal worker had revealed the location of an ancient treasure. ”What kind?”

”Whatever was left in the pot.”

”That is not an answer.”

”That’s how stew works.”

Milo looked at Sera. ”We need to protect this man.”

”You were already protecting him.”

”Now there is purpose.”

Kael smiled.

The System opened quietly near the edge of his vision.

[Environmental Scan]

Immediate large hostile signatures: none detected

Draconic movement: low within current scan radius

Geothermal activity: persistent

Distance from high-output southwestern disturbances: increasing

Good.

Not safe.

Better.

Kael shifted the scan toward the wagon.

[Tovin Marr]

Condition: critical

Circulatory stability: fragile but holding

Foreign residue activity: moderate

Mana-channel stress: severe

Recent destabilization trend: reduced

Kael released a breath he had not realized he was holding.

The healer noticed.

”You checked him again.”

Kael looked toward her.

She walked beside the front wheel with one hand resting on the wagon rail.

”Yes.”

”How many times since we found the road?”

He considered lying.

”Three.”

”Five.”

Kael frowned. ”Then why ask?”

”To see if princes lie badly when tired.”

”What did you learn?”

”That this one does.”

Milo called from behind, ”I could have told you that.”

Kael turned. ”Nobody asked you.”

”That has never stopped me.”

The healer smiled despite herself, then looked back toward Tovin.

”He’s holding. Stop spending attention you may need later.”

Kael understood the point.

The System did not cost mana every time he looked at something, but attention still mattered.

So did anxiety.

He dismissed the display.

The road leveled again.

For several minutes, the only sounds came from wheels, boots, birds, and Kel complaining because Rask had refused to let him ride in the wagon.

”You put Derren in there.”

”Derren has broken ribs.”

”I have a broken rib.”

”Probably one.”

”That makes mine more efficient.”

Rask kept walking.

Kel leaned harder against him. ”You’re cruel.”

”You told me that already.”

”I am reinforcing the lesson.”

Mara looked over from the wagon. ”You can trade places with Tovin.”

Kel immediately straightened as much as his ribs allowed.

”No.”

”Then walk.”

He walked.

Kael looked away before Kel saw him smile.

The group stretched across nearly forty paces now. Galahad and Iris remained ahead. Darius alternated between the wagon and the front line. Sera took the higher side of the road when terrain allowed, using the slope for visibility. Milo remained deliberately separated from Tovin, though every time the wagon hit a rough patch his eyes moved toward it.

Kael noticed that too.

Guilt had found him.

Milo hid most emotions behind jokes because jokes were fast and cheap.

Guilt moved slower.

Sera seemed to understand.

She had not told him that Tovin’s earlier mana reaction was not his fault.

She had simply stayed near him.

Kael was beginning to realize those were not the same kind of kindness.

The road curved around a low ridge.

Bastin raised one hand.

”There.”

At first Kael saw only smoke.

Not dangerous smoke.

Cooking smoke.

Thin gray streams rising between trees.

Then roofs appeared.

The camp did not resemble one of Blackwood’s permanent villages. It was smaller, rougher, built around work rather than families settling for generations. A dozen timber buildings formed an uneven crescent around a large packed-earth yard. Charcoal sheds stood farther downhill, blackened from years of dust. Two broad kiln fields occupied a cleared section beyond the camp, though only one kiln smoked now. Wagons sat beside stacked timber. Tools hung from covered racks. A bell tower barely taller than a house rose near the eastern edge.

Then someone saw them.

A man carrying a bundle of split wood stopped.

The bundle fell from his arms.

He shouted.

Everything changed at once.

Doors opened.

Workers emerged.

Someone rang the bell.

Not Bastin’s confused one-two-one.

Three rapid strikes.

Pause.

Three again.

The response rippled through the camp.

People came running.

Not soldiers.

Workers.

Women.

Old men.

Two children who were immediately caught by an older woman and pulled behind her.

A young worker sprinted toward them, stopped halfway, and stared.

His eyes found Bastin first.

Then Derren.

He shouted a name Kael did not catch.

People surged closer.

Galahad raised a hand.

”Slow!”

The word carried enough authority to stop the first rush.

Barely.

Bastin stood on the driver’s platform.

”Give the wagon room!”

That worked better.

The crowd split.

The expedition entered the yard.

Kael had walked into battlefields with less emotion waiting for him.

Some people cheered when they recognized missing workers.

Others searched faces.

That was worse.

A woman pushed through the crowd, scanning the wagon.

”Where’s Mara?”

Mara stepped from behind Rask.

”Here!”

The woman broke.

Mara caught her before she reached the wagon.

They hit each other hard enough to stagger.

No elegant embrace.

No words at first.

The woman grabbed the back of Mara’s coat and held on.

Mara’s face disappeared against her shoulder.

Kael turned away.

Across the yard, another worker reached Derren.

The man climbed onto the wagon without permission and grabbed Derren’s face between both hands.

”You idiot.”

Derren stared.

Then smiled.

”You got uglier.”

The man punched his shoulder.

Derren screamed.

The healer spun.

”What are you doing?”

The man froze.

Derren clutched his shoulder.

”You absolute bastard.”

”You said I got uglier.”

”You hit the injured side.”

”You have an uninjured side?”

The healer pushed the man out of the wagon.

Several people laughed through tears.

Kael heard another voice.

”Lysa?”

Lysa’s head snapped up.

A thin older woman stood near the crowd’s edge.

For a moment neither moved.

Then Lysa tried to climb down.

Her injured ankle folded.

Mara caught her.

The older woman crossed the distance instead.

Lysa whispered, ”Auntie.”

The woman slapped her.

Everyone nearby went silent.

Lysa stared.

Then the woman pulled her into an embrace so tight Lysa made a small sound of pain.

”You stupid child.”

Lysa started crying.

”I’m sorry.”

”You disappeared.”

”I know.”

”You disappeared.”

”I know.”

The older woman repeated it until the words stopped sounding like anger.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

The Guild leader stood completely still.

This was part of the mission too.

Not the monsters.

Not the evidence.

This.

People coming home to someone.

Then another family approached the wagon.

They did not find who they wanted.

Kael knew before anyone spoke.

A woman scanned the wounded once.

Twice.

Her face went pale.

A younger boy stood beside her.

”Rellan?”

No one answered quickly enough.

That was the answer.

Galahad moved.

Kael watched him cross the yard.

The woman looked at the Guild insignia on his coat.

”No.”

Galahad stopped a respectful distance away.

Her head shook.

”No.”

The boy looked between them.

”Where is he?”

Galahad’s expression changed.

He had probably done this before.

That did not make it easier.

”Rellan Dorr was found in the lower works.”

The woman covered her mouth.

The boy stared.

Galahad continued.

”He was dead when we reached him.”

The boy’s face went empty.

The woman swayed.

Someone behind her caught her shoulders.

Galahad did not move forward unless invited.

Good.

Kael did not either.

The woman forced out a question.

”Did he run?”

Galahad’s brow furrowed.

”What?”

”Did he leave them?”

Lysa heard.

She pulled away from her aunt.

”No.”

Everyone looked toward her.

Lysa’s voice shook.

”He came back.”

The woman stared.

Lysa continued.

”He could have run. He came back for us.”

Tovin moved in the wagon.

His eyes remained closed.

His voice barely carried.

”Nobody gets left.”

The woman broke.

Not loudly.

She folded around the grief as though struck in the stomach.

The boy stood beside her, still too shocked to cry.

Galahad lowered his head.

”We had to leave Rellan’s body marked where we found him. We could not carry him without risking the living wounded.”

The woman looked at him.

Kael expected anger.

Maybe Galahad did too.

Instead she asked, ”Can you bring him back later?”

”Yes.”

Galahad did not hesitate.

”When the route is safe enough, we recover him.”

That was a promise.

Kael heard the weight.

So did Galahad.

The woman nodded.

Once.

Then she looked toward Lysa.

”Tell me everything.”

Lysa’s aunt took her arm.

”Not now.”

”I need—”

”You need to sit.”

”I need to know.”

Lysa looked toward Galahad.

He answered gently.

”You will.”

Not today.

Not in a yard full of people trying to understand who had returned and who had not.

The camp had one healer.

An older woman with white hair braided tightly behind her head, hands stained with herbs, charcoal, or both.

She took one look at the expedition and swore.

Then she took command of the entire camp.

”You, clear the sorting shed. You, boil water. Not warm. Boil. Get every clean blanket you can find. Move those children away from the wagon. Who put that splint on?”

The Guild healer raised her hand.

The camp healer inspected the man’s ankle without introducing herself.

”Good work.”

”Thank you.”

”Still ugly.”

”I know.”

The two women looked at each other.

Something passed between healers.

Respect, perhaps.

Or recognition of another person accustomed to being ignored until someone started bleeding.

Tovin was moved first.

The camp healer stopped the litter team before they carried him inside.

”What happened to him?”

The Guild healer answered.

”Blood loss, puncture trauma, burns, broken ribs, ankle fracture, dehydration, and foreign magical exposure affecting his mana circulation.”

The camp healer stared.

Then looked at Tovin.

Then back at her.

”I can handle four of those.”

”So can I.”

”And the rest?”

Kael stepped closer.

”We stabilize.”

The camp healer looked at him.

Recognition came slowly.

Then abruptly.

”Oh.”

Milo leaned toward Sera. ”He gets that a lot.”

Sera whispered, ”Quiet.”

The healer bowed.

Not deeply.

Mostly because she appeared too busy to care.

”Your Highness.”

”Kael.”

She stared.

”That is not how this works.”

”Today it is.”

She considered him for half a second.

Then pointed toward Tovin.

”Can you keep him from dying?”

”For now.”

”That is enough to get him indoors.”

Kael liked her immediately.

They carried Tovin into the sorting shed.

The building had probably been intended for weighing charcoal sacks and organizing loads. Within minutes it became a treatment room.

Tables were pushed aside.

Blankets covered the floor.

Windows opened.

Water arrived.

The wounded field-team members occupied one side.

Derren was forced onto another bed despite complaining that he could sit.

Lysa received her own space beside him.

Kel tried to disappear.

Rask caught the back of his coat.

”No.”

Kel looked wounded.

Emotionally.

”My rib hurts less.”

”That is because you’re lying.”

”You cannot prove that.”

The healer pointed.

”Bed.”

Kel looked at Rask.

Rask smiled.

Kel muttered something about betrayal and obeyed.

Kael remained near Tovin.

The System opened.

[Tovin Marr]

Physical condition: critical

Foreign residue activity: moderate

Mana-channel instability: persistent

Environmental threat reduced

Immediate recommendation: rest / hydration / controlled mana environment / continued circulatory monitoring

The healer began cutting away bandages where blood had seeped through.

Kael looked toward the room.

Too many people.

Too much mana.

Milo remained outside.

Good.

Veyra too.

Interesting.

Kael stepped back.

”He needs as little active magic around him as possible.”

The camp healer frowned.

”Meaning?”

”His foreign residue reacts to mana surges.”

She looked at the other wounded.

Then toward the door.

”How far?”

”Unknown.”

”Useful.”

”That’s becoming popular.”

She did not smile.

Then she cleared half the shed.

No argument.

Good healer.

Kael stayed until Tovin drank three small mouthfuls of water and kept them down.

Then Galahad appeared at the door.

”Need you outside.”

Kael followed.

The yard had changed again.

The first emotional rush was giving way to organization.

Workers moved equipment.

Families took recovered people aside.

Bastin argued with two men about the damaged wagon wheel.

Mara remained with the woman who had embraced her.

Rask’s seven recovered field members had gathered near one of the sheds.

Veyra stood alone beneath the bell tower.

And Milo had acquired stew.

Kael stared.

Milo sat on an overturned bucket holding a wooden bowl in both hands.

”You found food.”

Milo looked offended.

”It found me.”

Sera sat on a log beside him with her own bowl.

”You followed the smell across the entire camp.”

”A tactical skill.”

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”Is this why you needed me?”

”No.”

”Disappointing.”

Galahad led him toward the eastern edge of camp.

Darius was already there.

So was Iris.

Bastin joined them after shouting something about an axle.

The charcoal road continued east toward Blackwood’s permanent settlements.

Another road branched south.

The bell tower stood at the junction.

Galahad looked toward Bastin.

”Nearest guarded post?”

”Westbrook road station.”

”How far?”

”Little over an hour with a healthy horse. Two on foot.”

”Can someone ride?”

Bastin nodded.

”I sent a boy when the bell first rang.”

Good.

That meant Blackwood would know.

Darius looked toward Kael.

”Captain Rolan should receive word before sunset if the station sends immediately.”

Kael calculated.

Black Dragon.

House guards.

Healers.

Wagons.

Supplies.

They were finally within reach of their own people.

A part of him wanted to sit down and stop thinking.

Instead Galahad asked Bastin another question.

”How many people in camp?”

”Fifty-eight today. More when both kiln crews are here.”

”Defenses?”

Bastin looked around.

”Axes.”

Milo, from thirty paces away, called, ”I HAVE A SPOON.”

Sera smacked his arm.

Bastin stared.

Kael covered his face.

Darius looked toward the sky as if asking patience from something larger than himself.

Galahad ignored it with impressive discipline.

”Any wall?”

”No.”

”Watch?”

”Two people each night.”

”Drakes ever come this far?”

Bastin’s expression changed.

”Not mature ones.”

There.

Galahad looked toward Iris.

”Tracks?”

”None recent inside the camp perimeter.”

Darius crossed his arms.

”We should not assume the road keeps them away.”

”No.”

Galahad looked toward Kael.

The expedition was technically not finished.

They had reached a camp.

Not Blackwood proper.

Not secure walls.

Not a garrison.

Still, this was the first place with food, shelter, water, and a reliable line toward House territory.

Kael understood what Galahad wanted.

”We stay long enough to stabilize the wounded and establish contact with the station.”

Galahad nodded.

”No one goes back west today.”

Rask approached.

”That includes us?”

Everyone looked toward him.

His face gave nothing away.

Galahad answered first.

”Yes.”

Rask’s jaw tightened.

”My people still have positions west.”

”Your full field team is here.”

”Other teams.”

”Not this team’s mission.”

Rask stared.

Galahad did not move.

Rask looked toward Darius.

Darius gave him nothing.

Then toward Kael.

Kael understood what he was asking.

Not permission.

Perhaps judgment.

”You already know what happens if you go back exhausted.”

Rask’s expression hardened.

”I know what happens if no one does.”

Kael looked toward the sorting shed.

”Tovin is alive because people stopped long enough to carry him.”

Rask followed his gaze.

Kael continued.

”Kel is alive because you didn’t jump after him without thinking.”

Kel’s voice came faintly from inside.

”I HEARD THAT.”

Rask closed his eyes.

Milo shouted, ”REST.”

Someone in the camp laughed.

Rask almost did.

Almost.

Kael continued more quietly.

”Wanting to go back is not wrong.”

”No.”

”Going back like this would be.”

Rask looked west.

For a long time.

Then nodded.

”Until morning.”

Galahad shook his head.

”Until we know what morning looks like.”

Rask did not like that.

He accepted it.

That was progress.

Kael watched him walk back toward his people.

Galahad exhaled.

”You’re getting better.”

Kael looked at him.

”At what?”

”Telling armed men no.”

Darius answered before Kael could.

”He has practice.”

Kael looked at him.

”Was that a joke?”

”No.”

Galahad smiled.

”It was.”

Darius walked away.

Kael stared after him.

”He’s getting worse.”

Galahad nodded solemnly.

”Milo.”

”Definitely.”

The humor faded when Iris unfolded a scrap of cloth on a crate between them.

She had collected it from the altered drake at the survey cut.

Dark residue marked the scale fragment wrapped inside.

Bastin stepped away immediately.

”What is that?”

”Something you do not touch.”

”Good enough.”

Iris looked toward Kael.

”We need this sealed before transport.”

Veyra’s voice came from behind them.

”I can do that.”

Nobody had heard her approach.

Darius’s hand moved toward his sword.

Not drawing.

Ready.

Veyra stopped.

”I said seal it. Not steal it.”

Milo had also wandered closer with his bowl.

”You continue appearing exactly when something magical becomes interesting.”

Veyra looked at him.

”You continue eating.”

”I am rebuilding.”

”With stew?”

”Foundational material.”

Sera followed more slowly, carrying her own bowl and an extra one.

She handed the extra to Kael.

He stared.

”What?”

”You haven’t eaten.”

Kael accepted it.

”Thank you.”

Milo looked hurt.

”You brought him one.”

”You already have one.”

”Favoritism.”

”You followed the pot.”

Veyra crouched near the wrapped scale.

Her focus remained dark.

No glow.

She did not touch the sample.

”What are you sealing it against?”

Iris answered.

”Leakage.”

Veyra nodded.

”Waxed charcoal paper.”

Bastin frowned.

”What?”

”The wrapping you use for wet powder.”

His eyebrows rose.

”We have that.”

”Two layers. Ash between them.”

Iris looked toward Kael.

He scanned.

[Containment Estimate]

Suggested method may reduce direct residue contact and environmental exposure

Effectiveness against unknown magical properties: uncertain

Kael nodded.

”Worth doing.”

Bastin fetched the materials.

Veyra stepped back.

Milo watched her.

”You knew that quickly.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because I have worked with unstable magical residue.”

There.

Everyone went quieter.

Veyra realized it a moment too late.

Milo stopped smiling.

Kael lowered the stew bowl.

”What kind?”

Veyra looked at him.

”Many kinds.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the one you get.”

Darius stepped closer.

”Were you involved with the lower works?”

Veyra’s expression changed immediately.

”No.”

No hesitation.

Kael watched her.

The System did not detect lies.

It was not built for that.

Good.

They would have to think.

Rask had approached again.

He heard enough.

”Then why do you know containment?”

Veyra looked at him.

”Because your people are not the only ones who experiment with things they shouldn’t.”

That landed badly.

Rask’s face hardened.

”My people?”

Veyra glanced toward the sorting shed where Joren was not.

Where Lysa was.

Where Tovin was.

She did not apologize.

Rask took one step forward.

Darius shifted between them.

Not dramatically.

Enough.

”Later.”

Rask looked toward him.

Darius’s voice remained flat.

”You are injured. She is tired. We have wounded twenty paces away. Later.”

Rask stepped back.

Veyra looked toward Kael.

”You want answers.”

”Yes.”

”I want food.”

Milo lifted his bowl.

”Finally, common ground.”

Veyra almost smiled.

Kael looked at her.

”Eat.”

She blinked.

”We talk afterward.”

Her expression tightened.

”You’re ordering me?”

”No.”

That seemed to bother her more.

Kael returned to his stew.

It was too salty.

He ate all of it.

The camp changed over the next hour.

A horse left east with a written message carrying Galahad’s expedition status, Kael’s seal, and Darius’s request for healers, transport wagons, and an armed escort. Bastin insisted on sending two riders instead of one. Darius approved.

The dead were counted.

The living were counted twice.

The number mattered.

Rellan remained marked below.

Nella remained dead.

Other confirmed dead from the scattered workers were named quietly and written down.

Kael did not know all of them.

That bothered him.

He asked for the names anyway.

Galahad recorded them.

Mara helped.

Rask did too.

No politics.

No factions.

Just names.

When the list was finished, Kael read every one.

He did not make a speech.

He did not know enough about them to deserve one.

Instead he signed beneath Galahad’s record as witness.

That felt more honest.

Near sunset, the children emerged again.

At first they stayed near buildings and watched the strange collection of armed strangers occupying their camp.

Milo ruined the distance.

He was sitting beside the cookfire when one boy stared at his bandaged hand for too long.

Milo lifted it.

”Drake.”

The boy’s eyes widened.

Sera looked over.

”You cut that on metal.”

Milo lowered his hand.

”Why would you destroy this?”

”Because lying to children is bad.”

”You told him earlier the stew had carrots.”

”It did.”

”Those were turnips.”

The boy looked between them.

”Did you fight a drake?”

Milo considered.

”Yes.”

”How big?”

Sera immediately answered, ”Do not.”

Milo spread his hands.

”Approximately the size of this camp.”

The boy gasped.

Sera threw a piece of bread at him.

Milo caught it.

”Thank you.”

”That was not a gift.”

”Intent does not change nutrition.”

The boy laughed.

Then another child came closer.

Then another.

Soon Milo was surrounded.

Kael watched from the sorting shed doorway.

Sera sat nearby repairing one of her arrow bindings with thread Bastin’s wife had found.

Nine usable arrows.

One cracked.

She had not counted them in front of Kael since reaching camp.

Maybe she still did when nobody watched.

That was fine.

Healing did not have to perform.

Milo’s story grew more absurd with every question.

”How many drakes?”

”Forty.”

Sera did not look up. ”No.”

”Thirty.”

”No.”

”Several.”

”Better.”

”Did Prince Kael kill them?”

Milo looked toward Kael.

The children followed his gaze.

Kael immediately regretted standing where he could be seen.

Milo smiled.

”No.”

Kael blinked.

Interesting.

Milo continued.

”We did.”

The children looked confused.

Milo pointed with the spoon.

”Prince. Darius. Sera. Iris. Galahad. Me. Workers. People who probably should have been somewhere safer. Everybody.”

Sera looked up.

No joke now.

Milo shrugged.

”Heroes who do everything alone are usually lying about who carried their bags.”

Kael stared.

Milo noticed.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”Stop stealing my phrase.”

Sera smiled.

A little girl looked toward Darius.

He stood near the road, speaking with Galahad.

”Is he the strongest?”

Milo considered.

Sera watched him.

This answer could become dangerous.

Milo nodded.

”Yes.”

Darius heard.

He looked over.

Milo continued.

”And incredibly boring.”

Darius turned back to Galahad.

Sera laughed.

Kael laughed too.

Then Tovin called his name.

Not loudly.

Kael entered the shed immediately.

The camp healer sat beside him.

Lysa had fallen asleep nearby.

Derren snored.

He absolutely snored.

Tovin’s eyes were open.

Clearer than before.

Kael approached.

”How do you feel?”

Tovin looked at him.

”Bad.”

”That seems accurate.”

A faint smile.

Then his eyes shifted toward the window.

”Road?”

”Charcoal camp.”

”We’re out?”

Kael hesitated.

”Out of the lower works.”

Tovin understood the distinction.

”Rellan?”

”Still marked.”

Tovin’s mouth tightened.

Kael continued before he had to ask.

”We’re bringing him home.”

Tovin closed his eyes briefly.

”Good.”

Silence.

Then:

”Lysa?”

”Right there.”

Tovin turned his head enough to see her sleeping.

He relaxed.

Kael noticed.

Tovin looked back.

”Joren?”

Kael’s expression changed.

”Missing.”

Tovin’s eyes sharpened despite exhaustion.

”He knows.”

”What?”

Tovin swallowed.

Pain crossed his face.

The healer immediately leaned closer.

”Don’t push.”

Tovin ignored her.

”He knows who came.”

Kael crouched.

”Who came where?”

Tovin frowned.

Memory.

Not certainty.

Kael waited.

Tovin whispered, ”Lower rooms.”

Lysa stirred but did not wake.

Tovin continued.

”Before they moved us.”

Kael’s pulse changed.

”Who?”

Tovin shook his head.

”Didn’t see.”

”Then what do you remember?”

”Joren scared.”

That mattered.

Kael had not seen Joren scared until the drakes and steam release.

Tovin closed his eyes.

”Not of us.”

”What did he say?”

Tovin struggled.

The healer touched Kael’s arm.

”Enough.”

Kael almost stopped.

Then Tovin spoke again.

”Called someone…”

He swallowed.

”Commander?”

Kael did not react outwardly.

Too broad.

Could mean anything.

”What else?”

Tovin’s brow tightened.

”Nothing.”

The healer pushed Kael backward this time.

”That is enough.”

Kael stood.

Tovin’s breathing had accelerated.

The System appeared.

[Stress response increasing]

Recommendation: discontinue questioning

Kael nodded.

”Rest.”

Tovin’s eyes opened once more.

”Prince.”

”Yes?”

”He was scared.”

”I heard you.”

”No.”

Tovin stared.

”Joren was scared before they came.”

Kael held his gaze.

Then nodded.

”I understand.”

Tovin let his eyes close.

Within minutes, sleep took him.

Kael stepped outside.

The camp had turned gold beneath late sunlight.

He found Galahad and Darius near the road.

Iris joined before he finished explaining.

None of them overreacted.

Good.

Galahad folded his arms.

”Commander could be rank.”

”Yes.”

”Could be nickname.”

”Yes.”

”Could be misunderstanding.”

”Yes.”

Darius looked toward the western road.

”But Joren feared someone arriving.”

”If Tovin remembers accurately.”

Iris nodded.

”That is still worth recording.”

Kael agreed.

No conclusions.

One more piece.

Galahad rubbed his jaw.

”We do not act on it tonight.”

”No.”

Kael looked toward the camp.

”We get everyone home.”

Darius glanced at him.

”Good.”

Something in the word mattered.

Approval?

Maybe.

Kael did not need to ask.

A bell rang from the eastern road.

Once.

Then twice.

Bastin came running.

This time nobody laughed about the code.

”Riders!”

Everyone capable of holding a weapon stood.

Iris moved first.

Sera was already reaching for her bow when Kael noticed she stopped.

Her hand hovered near the quiver.

Nine.

Then she lowered it slightly.

Not because she was unprepared.

Because she heard the next sound.

Hooves.

Organized.

More than two.

A black banner appeared between the trees.

Silver dragon.

Blackwood.

Kael exhaled.

The riders rounded the bend.

Twelve House guards came first.

Behind them rolled two covered wagons.

A healer rode beside the first.

Another wagon followed farther back carrying supplies.

At the head of the escort rode Captain Rolan.

Not Darius.

Not Grom.

Rolan.

Exactly the person who should have come.

He saw Kael.

His face changed from professional control to something dangerously close to anger.

He dismounted before his horse fully stopped.

”Your Highness.”

Kael smiled.

”Captain.”

Rolan looked him over.

Bruised face.

Damaged armor.

Bandaged shoulder.

Blood.

Mud.

Ash.

Then Darius.

Then Galahad.

Then the wounded.

His jaw tightened.

”You look terrible.”

Kael glanced at Darius.

”Everyone keeps saying that.”

Rolan stared.

Then pulled Kael into a hard embrace.

Kael froze.

Rolan released him immediately, as though realizing halfway through that he had just grabbed an Imperial prince in front of half the camp.

”Apologies.”

Kael stared.

Then laughed.

”No.”

Rolan looked confused.

”No?”

”You don’t get to apologize after doing it.”

Milo called from the fire.

”HE’S RIGHT.”

Rolan looked toward him.

”Milo.”

Milo raised the spoon.

”Captain.”

Rolan stared at the bowl.

”Of course.”

Sera laughed.

The tension finally broke.

Blackwood had reached them.

Not a fortress.

Not safety forever.

But their people.

Their wagons.

Their guards.

Their healers.

Their road home.

Captain Rolan looked toward Galahad.

”Report.”

Galahad’s posture changed immediately.

Mission lead again.

”Long.”

”I brought paper.”

”Good.”

Rolan looked toward Darius.

”You?”

Darius glanced west.

”Later.”

Rolan followed his gaze.

His expression changed.

”Not finished.”

”No.”

Kael looked toward the same road.

The western forest waited beyond the camp.

Rellan still waited below.

Joren remained missing.

The lower records Mara knew about remained underground.

Someone had experimented on Tovin and Lysa.

Altered drakes carried unstable foreign power.

Veyra knew more than she had admitted.

Something had frightened drakes out of the lower slopes.

And now Tovin remembered a frightened Joren waiting for someone he called Commander.

They had made it back to people.

They had not made it to answers.

Kael looked toward the covered wagons.

”Get the wounded home first.”

Captain Rolan nodded.

No hesitation.

That was why Kael trusted him.

The questions could wait one more night.

The living had already waited long enough.
