The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The lower-station warning did not stop.

Three fast strikes.

Pause.

Three more.

Then another bell farther west answered with the same pattern.

The entire second kiln station changed around Kael.

The healer who had been preparing Derren’s litter abandoned the knot she was tightening and crossed immediately toward a wall cabinet. One of the route workers pulled heavy shutters across the western windows. The older guide moved to the doorway with his spear while the lookout above the roof shouted something Kael could not make out over the bells.

Whatever the signal meant, these people had practiced for it.

That disturbed Kael more than panic would have.

Galahad stepped toward the older guide. ”You said something came out of the hatchery. What does that mean?”

The man looked west instead of answering.

Another scream rolled through the forest.

Not the Ash-King.

This one was sharper, higher, and joined halfway through by several smaller cries that overlapped until Kael could no longer separate them.

The route worker finally looked back.

”It means the lower barriers failed.”

Darius’s expression hardened. ”Barriers around what?”

”Drakes.”

”How many?”

The man hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Galahad stepped closer. ”How many?”

”I don’t know what got through.”

”That was not the question.”

The guide’s jaw tightened.

”Dozens are kept below the ridge.”

The room went silent.

Milo stopped leaning against the wall.

Sera’s hand moved immediately toward her bow.

Kael stared at the man.

”Dozens?”

”Not all grown.”

”You keep them there?”

”No.”

That answer came too quickly.

Darius noticed.

”Explain.”

The guide looked toward the healer, then the workers around the station, as if deciding how much he could still avoid saying.

”We harvest what comes down from the caldera. Hatchlings. Young drakes. Injured ones. Sometimes eggs.”

Kael felt something cold settle beneath the heat.

”Caldera.”

The man nodded once.

”Obsidian Caldera.”

There it was.

A name.

A place.

And judging by the fear in the room, not merely a location on a map.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

The Guild leader’s attention had sharpened too.

”Where?”

”Beyond the western ridge.”

”How far?”

”Half a day if the lower route is open.”

”And the hatchery?”

”Closer.”

Darius asked the more important question.

”Why are dozens of drakes contained below the ridge if you claim you do not keep them?”

The guide’s mouth tightened.

”Because they nest there.”

”Then what are the barriers?”

”Stone channels. Iron gates. Heat trenches. Old work from before my time. We keep them repaired because if the young drakes come down all at once, they spread east.”

Kael looked around the station.

The alarm lines.

The marked roads.

The workers.

The lookout bells.

What had first appeared to be a secret harvesting operation was becoming something more complicated.

Not innocent.

Not necessarily hostile.

But larger than Blackwood had understood.

The bells continued.

Derren stirred on the bed.

The healer turned.

”He needs to move.”

Galahad looked toward her. ”Can he?”

”With the litter.”

”Then prepare him.”

The older guide shook his head.

”You cannot take the east road while the hatchery alarm is active.”

Galahad’s gaze hardened.

”We are not leaving an injured man here if this station is about to be overrun.”

”That is exactly why I am telling you not to move.”

”Then tell me what is coming.”

The answer came from the roof.

”Three!”

Everyone looked up.

The lookout shouted again.

”Three through the lower cut! More behind!”

The guide cursed.

Darius was already moving toward the doorway.

Galahad grabbed his arm.

”Commander.”

Darius stopped.

”Mission lead.”

A brief exchange passed between them.

Not disagreement.

Confirmation.

Galahad asked, ”Can this station hold?”

The guide answered.

”Against three young ones? Yes.”

”And the ones behind?”

Silence.

That was enough.

Galahad turned toward Derren.

”Scout, help secure the litter. Archer, roof. Mobile, doorway. Commander with me. Prince—”

Kael’s vision changed.

Not dramatically.

A faint translucent window appeared at the edge of his sight.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

Environmental anomaly detected.

Temperature increase: accelerating.

Airflow shift detected from western corridor.

Probable incoming heat source.

Kael’s head snapped toward the western wall.

”Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

He could not explain the System.

He did not need to.

”The heat is rising too fast.”

The guide frowned.

”What?”

Kael pointed west.

”Not outside generally. Through that approach.”

Darius looked toward the doorway.

”Why?”

Kael forced his eyes to the room.

The System window changed.

[Structural Analysis]

Stone shelter integrity: moderate.

Western wall: heat-stressed mortar.

Roof support above western quarter: weakened.

Risk: localized collapse under impact or sustained heat.

There.

Useful.

Not an answer.

A warning.

Kael pointed immediately.

”Do not put Derren beneath the western roof.”

The healer stared at him.

”Why?”

”Move him.”

Something in Kael’s tone convinced her.

Iris and the healer shifted the litter toward the eastern interior.

Milo looked up.

”Prince?”

”Western roof is weaker.”

Darius did not ask how Kael knew.

Not now.

The first drake hit the building seconds later.

The impact shook dust from the ceiling.

A claw punched through one shutter, ripping away wood.

The worker beside it stumbled backward.

Sera loosed an arrow from the roof.

A shriek answered.

Then fire exploded across the western wall.

Heat rolled through the room.

The weakened mortar cracked exactly where the System had warned Kael.

A roof beam shifted.

The section where Derren had been moments earlier dropped half a foot and showered stone dust onto the floor.

Milo stared at Kael.

”That was useful.”

Kael drew his sword.

”Complain later.”

”Was not complaining.”

The second impact came from above.

This one heavier.

The roof shook.

The lookout screamed.

Then disappeared from view.

Sera’s voice followed.

”Two airborne! One ground!”

Darius moved through the doorway.

Galahad went with him.

Kael followed.

The guide started to object.

Galahad pointed back inside.

”Protect the injured.”

Then he was gone.

Outside, the station had become a kill zone.

One young drake lay near the western wall with Sera’s arrow through the throat. It was smaller than the one they had killed at the first kiln but still large enough that its tail struck the ground hard enough to scatter stones.

A second circled above the roof.

A third had landed near the road.

The ground drake opened its jaws.

Kael saw the chest expand.

Then the System moved again.

[Combat Analysis]

Target behavior pattern detected.

Heat buildup precedes discharge.

Vulnerable interval: throat expansion before ignition.

Kael did not think.

He acted.

”Archer! Throat when it swells!”

Sera turned.

The drake inhaled.

Its neck expanded.

She fired.

The arrow entered beneath the jaw.

The flame discharge came anyway.

Wrong direction.

The drake jerked sideways as the arrow struck, sending fire across the road instead of into the station.

Darius was already inside its reach.

His sword cut through the front leg at the shoulder.

The drake collapsed.

Galahad drove his blade into the exposed side.

Milo moved in only when the head turned away, struck once across the eye, and retreated before the jaw could snap closed.

Kael came from the opposite side.

The System highlighted nothing.

Good.

It was not going to hand him every answer.

He used what he already knew.

The creature’s chest had to expand before fire.

The wing joint remained less armored.

The neck was vulnerable beneath the jaw.

Kael stepped inside the tail sweep and cut upward.

His sword bit between scales.

The drake screamed.

Then the aerial one dropped.

Sera shouted.

”Above!”

Kael looked up too late.

Darius did not.

He drove Kael sideways with one shoulder.

Claws struck where Kael had been standing.

Stone cracked.

The drake beat its wings once, trying to rise.

Darius caught one leg.

Not with his hands.

With Aura.

A dense pressure burst outward from his blade and struck the joint.

The leg buckled.

The drake crashed sideways into the station wall.

The weakened western roof finally failed.

Timber and slate collapsed outward.

One route worker screamed from inside.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Then Iris shouted from the doorway.

”Clear! Everyone moved!”

Good.

The earlier warning had mattered.

For half a second, Kael felt relief.

Then the System flashed again.

[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]

Rapid movement detected: northwest.

Multiple heat signatures.

Count: unresolved.

Recommended action: reposition.

Kael looked northwest.

Nothing.

Trees.

Smoke.

Then branches broke.

”More coming!”

Galahad turned toward him.

”How many?”

”I don’t know.”

Not a lie.

Not exactly.

He knew enough.

”More than three.”

The guide went pale.

”Lower cut opened.”

Darius looked toward him.

”How many can come through?”

”Too many.”

That was when the A-rank mission truly began.

The forest erupted.

Four young drakes burst from the lower road almost together.

Two on the ground.

Two gliding between the trees.

Behind them came more movement.

Not visible yet.

Heard.

Claws on stone.

Wingbeats.

Screams.

Galahad looked once at the station.

Then at Derren inside.

Then at the road.

”Commander.”

Darius understood.

”We hold the choke.”

The lower road narrowed between black stone outcrops fifty yards west of the station.

If the drakes reached the open station area, they could attack from several directions.

At the choke, fewer could enter at once.

Galahad pointed.

”Scout, get the wounded ready to move east. Archer, elevation. Mobile, support the retreat path. Prince with Commander. We hold until the litter is moving.”

Kael nodded.

No argument.

No heroics.

Objective first.

Darius ran for the choke.

Kael followed.

Heat intensified with every step.

The System flickered.

[Environmental Analysis]

Air quality deteriorating.

Combustion gases detected.

Extended exposure risk: increasing.

Wind direction: eastward.

Kael looked toward the station.

Smoke would follow them toward Blackwood if this spread.

That mattered later.

Not now.

The first ground drake reached the choke.

Darius met it alone.

Kael had seen him fight before.

He had seen why people called him one of the greatest swordsmen in the Empire.

This was different.

There was no audience.

No tournament measure.

No need to preserve appearances.

Darius’s Aura compressed around his blade until the air itself seemed to tighten.

The drake lunged.

Darius did not retreat.

He stepped inside the jaws.

Kael’s heart stopped.

The blade moved once.

A short diagonal cut beneath the skull.

The drake’s head continued forward.

Its body did not.

Momentum carried the carcass past Darius and into the stone wall.

Before it finished falling, he had already turned toward the second.

That one learned.

It stopped before entering reach and released fire.

Darius shifted.

Not away.

Sideways.

The flames filled the choke.

Kael threw out one hand.

Ice formed instinctively.

Not a wall thick enough to stop everything.

A curved barrier.

The flame struck it.

Steam exploded.

The ice began melting immediately.

The System flashed.

[Magic Efficiency Warning]

Current Ice barrier loss rate: severe.

Environmental temperature reducing stability.

Recommendation: concentrate structure; avoid broad-area formation.

Kael gritted his teeth.

Useful.

He changed the spell.

Instead of maintaining a wide shield, he compressed the ice around the hottest center of the flame path, creating a smaller angled wedge that forced the fire upward.

Darius moved beneath it.

His sword struck the drake’s throat.

The creature recoiled.

Kael followed.

Aura and Ice together.

Magic Swordsman.

Not one after the other.

Together.

Frost raced along the lower half of his blade.

He cut across the wounded throat.

The ice entered the open wound.

The drake’s body jerked.

Its next breath failed.

Darius finished it.

”Better,” he said.

Kael stared at him.

”Now?”

”Yes.”

Another drake screamed.

Darius turned.

Kael almost laughed.

Almost.

The aerial pair came next.

Sera’s first arrow missed.

That alone told Kael how difficult the fight had become.

The drake twisted between the trees at the last moment.

Her second arrow struck the wing but did not penetrate deeply.

The creature folded one side and dove.

Not at Sera.

At the litter.

”Litter!”

Milo moved.

He did not try to fight the drake.

He ran directly across its descent path.

The creature adjusted toward him.

Exactly as Galahad had predicted Milo would make enemies do.

At the last moment, Milo dropped and rolled beneath a fallen beam.

The drake overshot.

Sera’s arrow entered its flank.

Iris shot from beside the doorway.

Her arrow struck the eye.

The drake crashed.

But the second aerial one reached the roof.

Its claws struck the remaining support.

Stone broke.

The healer screamed.

The eastern half held.

The western half did not.

Kael looked toward Derren.

Still moving.

Two workers had lifted the litter.

Good.

Then something enormous struck the trees beyond the choke.

Not entering.

Landing.

The ground moved.

Kael felt it through his boots.

Darius stopped.

For the first time since the attack began, his expression changed.

The younger drakes changed too.

They did not charge.

They scattered.

One fled north.

Another launched upward.

The wounded one near the station dragged itself away.

Even the creatures attacking them were afraid.

Galahad saw it.

”That isn’t the Ash-King.”

The guide, standing near Derren’s litter, looked west.

”No.”

Kael turned toward him.

”What?”

The man’s face had gone gray.

”That’s one of the brood guards.”

Milo stared.

”One of?”

The answer came from the trees.

A massive head pushed between two black trunks.

Kael had expected larger.

He had not expected this.

The creature stood taller at the shoulder than a warhorse. Its body was thick rather than lean, covered in dark volcanic scales with dull red lines between them that looked almost like banked coals.

Its wings were folded.

Not because it could not fly.

Because the trees were too tight.

Four hooked claws dug into the soil with each step.

Kael saw the marks immediately.

Four grooves.

Spacing.

Height.

The pine near Derren.

Same general size.

The System reacted.

[ANALYSIS AVAILABLE]

Kael focused.

The window sharpened.

Species: Unknown Drake Variant

Classification estimate: insufficient data

Observed traits:

Heavy thermal resistance

Dense frontal armor

Wing-assisted mobility

High body mass

Recent activity pattern matches partial claw evidence

Warning: frontal engagement unfavorable

Not a full answer.

Enough.

Kael shouted.

”Do not fight it from the front!”

Darius glanced at him once.

The brood guard charged.

Fast.

Far too fast for its size.

Darius stepped aside.

Kael moved the other direction.

The creature did not choose between them.

It used its wing.

One massive wing snapped outward.

The impact caught Darius across the side.

Kael saw the commander leave the ground.

Sir Darius Valen hit the stone wall hard enough to crack it.

Everyone froze for one terrible fraction of a second.

Darius fell to one knee.

Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

Kael’s mind went cold.

There.

A-rank.

Not because people called it that.

Because one mistake had just thrown one of the Four Imperial Shields through stone.

The brood guard turned toward Darius.

Kael moved before fear finished forming.

Light burst from his free hand.

Not enough to harm the creature seriously.

Enough to blind.

The flash struck its face.

The drake recoiled.

Kael ran between it and Darius.

Darius looked up.

”Move.”

”No.”

”Move.”

The brood guard shook off the light faster than Kael expected.

The System flashed.

[Combat Analysis]

Visual disruption duration: limited.

Thermal buildup increasing beneath cervical plates.

Probable flame discharge.

Kael looked at the neck.

There.

Thin red lines brightening between overlapping scales.

”Throat!”

Darius saw it too.

He stood.

Too slowly.

Injured.

Still dangerous.

The brood guard inhaled.

Kael raised Ice.

The System warning appeared immediately.

Broad barrier inefficient.

He did not use one.

Instead, he drove Ice into the ground.

A narrow ridge erupted diagonally between the drake and the station.

Not to stop the fire.

To redirect it.

The brood guard discharged.

The flame struck the ice ridge.

Steam exploded.

The angled surface split the fire into two streams.

One passed north.

The other south.

The center opened.

Darius went through it.

Kael barely saw him move.

His sword struck beneath the glowing neck plates.

The blade entered.

Not deeply enough.

The brood guard roared and snapped sideways.

Darius withdrew.

Kael attacked the same point.

His sword struck the wound.

Ice followed.

The creature convulsed.

The System flashed.

[Pattern Confirmed]

Thermal plates open during discharge cycle.

Temporary armor reduction detected.

Kael shouted.

”After it breathes fire! The neck opens!”

Sera heard him from the station.

She fired.

The arrow struck one of the glowing seams.

Penetrated.

The brood guard screamed.

Milo looked from Sera to Kael.

”That is extremely useful!”

”Less commentary!”

”I cope verbally!”

The brood guard turned toward Sera.

Bad.

Very bad.

It spread its wings.

The station had no roof strong enough to survive a direct landing.

Galahad saw it.

”Move the litter! East now!”

The workers started.

Derren groaned as the litter shifted.

The healer ran beside him.

Iris moved ahead to clear the route.

Milo peeled away from the fight to cover them.

Good.

Mission first.

Kael looked back at the brood guard.

Darius stood on one side.

Kael on the other.

The creature wanted the retreating group.

They had to stop it.

Darius wiped blood from his mouth.

”You wanted to come.”

Kael stared at him.

”This is when you say that?”

”Yes.”

The creature crouched.

Kael tightened his grip.

The System flickered at the edge of his vision.

Not an answer.

Data.

Direction.

Timing.

Enough.

He smiled despite himself.

”Fine.”

Darius’s Aura rose.

Kael let Ice run along his sword again.

The brood guard launched.

This time, they were ready.

The fight that followed did not look like a duel.

It looked like survival.

Darius took the creature’s attention first, striking the front plates just hard enough to force its head toward him. Kael attacked the flank and discovered the scales there were thinner but still dense enough to turn a careless sword.

The System marked no magical weak point.

So Kael made one.

He drove Ice into the same seam twice.

Then three times.

The first strike left frost.

The second spread it.

The third caused the heated scale to crack from the temperature change.

The System flashed.

[Material response detected.]

Rapid thermal cycling reducing scale integrity.

Kael understood.

Heat.

Cold.

Not simply overpowering the armor.

Stress it.

”Commander! Make it heat the left side!”

Darius did not ask why.

He pressured the creature from the right.

The brood guard turned.

Kael moved left.

The drake inhaled.

Kael waited.

That was the hardest part.

Every instinct told him to move earlier.

Darius had spent months teaching him not to spend decisions before the opponent forced them.

The red seams opened.

Kael threw Light into its face.

The head jerked.

Flame swept left.

Kael raised a narrow Ice ridge again.

Steam.

Thermal shock.

The already-frosted scales cracked wider.

Darius’s blade struck the opening.

Once.

Twice.

The third cut entered deep.

The brood guard screamed and slammed one wing into him.

Darius blocked.

Still moved several feet.

Kael stepped inside.

His sword entered the same wound.

Aura surged.

Ice followed.

The drake convulsed.

Its flame sac ruptured internally.

Heat flashed beneath the scales.

The System screamed a warning.

[CRITICAL THERMAL SURGE]

BACK!

Kael did not question it.

He threw himself away.

”Back!”

Darius moved too.

The brood guard’s neck erupted.

Not explosively enough to destroy the station.

Enough to send fire and fragments of black scale across the choke.

Kael hit the ground.

Something hot cut across his shoulder.

Pain.

Real.

He rolled.

Stopped.

For several seconds, he heard nothing except ringing.

Then Darius’s hand closed around the back of his coat and dragged him farther from the burning carcass.

”Up.”

Kael blinked.

His shoulder burned.

Blood.

Not much.

Enough.

”I’m up.”

”You are lying down.”

Kael pushed himself to one knee.

The brood guard collapsed.

Dead.

Darius stood beside him breathing harder than Kael had ever seen.

Armor dented at the ribs.

Blood at his mouth.

One sleeve torn.

Alive.

Still standing.

The younger drakes had fled.

The station remained damaged but not destroyed.

Derren’s litter had reached the eastern road.

Galahad stood halfway between the retreating group and the fight.

He looked at the dead brood guard.

Then Darius.

Then Kael.

”Can you move?”

”Yes,” Darius said.

Kael nodded.

Galahad looked at his shoulder.

”Can you fight?”

”Yes.”

Darius glanced at him.

Kael frowned.

”What?”

”Do not answer automatically.”

Kael looked at his arm.

Movement.

Painful.

Functional.

”Yes.”

Better.

Galahad nodded.

”Then we withdraw with Derren.”

The guide stared.

”What about the hatchery?”

Galahad looked west.

More cries echoed from the lower route.

Not as close.

Still there.

”That is no longer today’s objective.”

The man’s face tightened.

”If those gates are open—”

”Then your people need to leave too.”

”We cannot.”

”Why?”

The guide looked west.

”The eggs.”

Kael stopped.

”What eggs?”

No answer.

Darius’s gaze hardened.

”What eggs?”

The guide looked at the dead brood guard.

Then at the burning choke.

Finally, he said it.

”Ash-King’s.”

Silence.

Milo, several yards away, slowly turned.

”You harvest the Ash-King’s eggs.”

The guide shook his head.

”Not us.”

”Then who?”

The bells changed again.

One long strike.

Then another.

Farther west.

The workers at the station went still.

The guide’s expression became something Kael had not seen from him yet.

Pure fear.

Sera looked toward the sky.

”What does that signal mean?”

The guide swallowed.

”He’s coming back.”

Kael looked west.

The air above the ridge darkened.

Not from clouds.

From smoke.

And something much larger moved inside it.

The dead brood guard at their feet had been enough to injure Darius, force Kael to rely on the System repeatedly, damage the station, and nearly break their evacuation.

It was not the Ash-King.

Not even close.

Galahad looked at Derren’s litter.

Then the eastern road.

”Move.”

Nobody argued.

The A-rank expedition retreated east with its first recovered survivor while the bells behind them began ringing across the western forest one after another.

Not warnings anymore.

An alarm spreading from station to station.

And for the first time since entering the controlled territory, the people living beyond the perimeter were running too.
