....

Adele turned from the vanity mirror she’d been staring into for what felt like hours when the door creaked open.

Her heart slammed against her ribs, twisting cold and fast hen she saw who opened the door.

Her father stepped inside without a word, the air around him sharp and heavy. She froze, one foot still tucked behind the other, as if stepping forward might draw his wrath.

Her pulse thundered, and instinctively, she stood up, and her body bowed low. She pressed her hands together, chest rising and falling with quick, shallow breaths.

Her father’s gaze swept the room. ”What happened tonight?” His voice was low, lethal, the kind that made air itself shrink.

Adele’s stomach twisted. She pressed her hands tighter together, held her head down, and murmured, ”We had dinner.”

The words barely left her lips before his hand struck h nearly. Her cheek with a sharp backhand. Pain flared, hot and shocking, and her wolf whimpered in panic as she crumpled to the floor, with one hand clutching her burning skin.

”Play dumb with me one more time, and watch me break and rebuild you,” he hissed, voice thick with threat. ”What happened tonight?”

Adele pushed herself up, jaw tight, as she forced her hands to stop trembling. She cracked her neck slowly, and looked him in the eyes.

”I failed to capture the Alphas’ attention,” she said, her voice low, and controlled, but laced with the venom of frustration.

”You failed,” he said, voice low but laced with venom. ”And in front of them. Did you think the Alphas would forget that?”

Adele’s jaw clenched. She bent slightly at the waist. It was a bow of obedience but her mind whirred with every word.

All her life, she was raised to become a Luna. She acted like one, eat all the right things, and did all the right things.

Yet, Aire didn’t even try.

Her fingers pressed into the soft silk of her dress. She could feel the weight of her father’s expectations pressing down on her, as if his very presence threatened to crush her into a perfect mold.

”You are weak,” he continued, stepping closer. Each footfall was deliberate, and each movement a reminder of the power he wielded over her life. ”Do you understand what happens to the weak in this world?”

Adele’s throat tightened. She swallowed, forcing a calmness she did not feel. ”Yes, Father,” she murmured, her voice steady.

”He’s a bustard. How long are we to endure this?” Her wolf stirred up in protest, then let out a soft whimper when Adele ignored her.

Blackfen’s eyes flickered, calculating and assering her existence. ”Weakness is not forgiven. Weakness is punished. And what you did tonight was more than weakness. It was an insult to me. A mockery. Right before you, they sat with a cursed wolfless girl.”

She felt the heat rise in her chest, a mix of fear and anger. She had studied every courtly gesture, every trick, and every word her father might use to manipulate or humiliate her. And yet, standing before him now, she felt the truth of it—the full weight of Alpha Blackfen’s wrath.

He always surprised her with his next words and none has ever been less cruel than the last.

”Tomorrow,” he said, his voice low but cutting like glass, ”we will try again. And you will get it right this time. Every eye must fall on you and every man must see only what I intend for them to see.”

Adele’s lips pressed into a thin line. She reminded herself to pretend. She had lived her life behind masks, smiles, glances, and silence. She would do it again.

”What if... what if I focus on finding my real mate?” she murmured, letting the words slip just enough to be heard. ”It’s proven that the Alphas aren’t for me.”

Blackfen’s hand shot out like lightning, slamming against the table beside her. The sound cracked through the room, echoing off the walls.

He leaned close, so close she could feel his breath. ”You have no mate,” he spat. ”And no power to choose. Everything you want, everything you desire, is mine to grant or take. You stupid girl.”

Adele’s wolf whimpered quietly in protest, a sound only she heard, but she forced it down. She straightened, meeting his gaze directly.

The silk of her dress clung to her, but her posture was controlled, and precise.

’Do not give him a weapon,’ she thought. ’Do not give him the satisfaction.’

”Very well,” she said softly. ”Then I will do as you command.”

Alpha Blackfen’s eyes narrowed. There was satisfaction in obedience but only for a moment.

His mind was a predator’s, always circling, always probing. ”You will do more than command,” he said. ”You will perform. You will seduce. You will show them the Luna I am shaping you to be. And make no mistake, Adele... fail again, and I will break you.”

Adele mind raced at the thought of what he might do to her.

”Tomorrow, you will wear the dress I choose. The maids will prepare everything. Your hair, your posture, and your eyes must shine. Every detail must be perfect. Every man’s attention is mine to command, and yours to exploit.”

She felt the coldness in his words, the cruelty that ran through every syllable.

”You will learn, Adele,” Blackfen said, turning sharply toward the door, ”that beauty and attention are weapons. And if you cannot wield them properly... you will be nothing.”

Adele’s hands clenched at her sides. The sting on her cheek pulsed again. She flinched as her healing ability worked its magic.

Then, she let the silence stretch between them, filling the room with the unspoken promise that she understood.

When the door finally clicked shut behind him, she allowed herself the smallest, sharp exhale.

Her wolf’s low growl reverberated through her chest.

Adele straightened fully, walking back to the vanity mirror. Her reflection stared back at her, pale, poised, and calculating.

Her dark oiled hair gleamed against the candle light. She touched her rosy cheek. ”I’m not ugly.” she murmured, staring far out of the mirror before her.
