Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 575: Chapter 570: Fourteen Carts

Location:Kaelport — The Granary Yard

Date/Time:10 Blazepeak 9943 AZI, Quenchday, The Seventh Bell

Realm:Lower Realm

The dust in that yard gets into everything, and Heiteng had stopped minding it in the first month.

It comes off the drying floor and hangs at about the height of a man’s chest all afternoon, flat and sweet, and it settles in the seams of a shirt and in the corners of the eyes and on the surface of every cup of water anybody sets down and does not drink within the minute. Four years of it. There was a black coat somewhere in a chest that had not been out since the second winter, and when he thought about that coat at all, which was not often, what he thought was that it would be full of this by noon.

Heiteng came back down the yard at the seventh bell and the haulage man was still standing by the weighbridge with the tally in his hand.

”Fourteen,” the man said.

Heiteng put his hand on the rail and looked at the tally without taking it.

”You said eleven.”

”I said eleven and you said fourteen, and fourteen is what we are doing, and you were right about it. Bring them Temperday.”

The man looked at him.

Orun had been bringing grain onto that ground since the first season, and he had spent four years being beaten in arguments by a large foreign man who did not raise his voice, and he had come to enjoy it in the particular way of somebody who knows he is being taught something and cannot work out what.

”You’ve gone somewhere,” Orun said.

”I have been at the storehouse.”

”You’ve gone somewhere,” said Orun again, and did not push it, because he was not a fool, and wrote fourteen on the tally and went to find his carts.

***

It does not cross.

That is the whole of it, and Heiteng had known it since he was old enough to be told, and had lived on the far side of it for four years without once finding it interesting.

There is no word for the thing. Black dragons do not discuss it and never have, and he had asked his grandmother once, at an age when a boy asks everything, and she had looked at him for a while and then said you will not need a word for it, and had gone back to what she was doing, and he had not needed a word for it. It is not speech. It is not sight. It is not a bond in the way the humans on this continent use the word, with their oaths and their formalities and their idea that a thing becomes true when it is said.

It is presence.

You have it with one person. Not chosen, not built, not ever explained. It sits behind the ribs being unremarkable, the way the floor of your own hall is unremarkable, and you do not think about it any more than you think about the floor, and then you go a world away, and it is not there, and you find out what it was.

Four years.

It had gone out under him on the road down, somewhere in the middle of that passage, and he had kept walking, because he had decided to keep walking and because there had been a thing at the bottom of it that mattered more. That is the whole of what he had done about it. A road walked down, and the floor of his own hall had gone out from under him, and he had gone on down, and he had been right.

So the absence was a thing he knew the taste of.

And he knew, with a certainty that had nothing to argue with in it, that if she had come down onto this continent on the twelfth of Sparkfall the floor would have come back. Not a whisper of it. Not a hint. The whole thing, at once, like a lamp in a room, and he would have been in the air before the feeling finished arriving.

And he had felt nothing.

Not on the twelfth. Not since. Not standing in a storehouse at the sixth bell with his hand on a stone and his sworn brother reading a dwarf’s letter at him across a world.

***

Work until dark, because the work was there.

Fourteen carts. The east store’s second bay, which had a sill that wanted lifting before Frostforge and had wanted it since Ashbloom. A dispute about weights with a factor from the Kessig side of the water that took forty minutes and should have taken four, and which Heiteng let take forty, because a man who has been argued out of a position in four minutes tells everybody he was cheated and a man who has been argued out of it in forty tells everybody he changed his mind.

Ordinary work. Ordinary, and he had come to like it more than he was ever going to admit to anybody on the ground he came from.

And under all of it, all afternoon, the nine lines.

He could say them. Written on the twenty-fourth of Ashwhisper at a table in a room he had been given, with the ink she had sent him two years ago because she had decided the ink on this continent was an insult, and he had written them short because he did not know how to write them long.

Cangwei. I am not held. I came down of my own will, and I stay of it. Whatever you have decided you saw, you did not see it. Do not come. — H.

Seven lines and a letter. They had been counted at the time, and called nine ever since, to everybody who asked, because nine sounds like a man who has tried.

It had been read back twice, and the thought had been: that is enough. She will be angry, and she will be right to be, and she will come to me about it in a year with the whole thing written out on three sheets in order, and I will let her have all of it, and that will be the end of it.

And then he had sent it to her house.

***

The thing he did not look at, all that afternoon, was in the inside pocket of his shirt where it had been for four years.

It is not large. It is dwarf work, and it looks like nothing — a flat gray token the size of two thumbnails with a mark on one face that a man could take for a scratch, and it weighs what a coin weighs, and he had carried it through a passage and out the far side and it had done the thing it does, which is nothing, visibly, at all.

He was High Apexblight standing in a granary yard on a world whose Laws stop at Peak Blazecrowned.

Nothing had been taken off him. Nothing had been held and given back. The Laws had gone over him in that passage and had not found him, and he had come down the road into an arrivals hall and been written in a book as a large man with no cargo, and had walked out into the thin air of a world he was not built for and been entirely himself.

Ren had put it in his hand the night before he went.

There had been no conversation about it. There had been a table and a cup neither of them drank, and a demon king who had said take this and had not explained what it was, because Heiteng had known what it was, and had taken it, and had said nothing that a man would want written down.

It did not come out of the pocket. There had been no need to look at it in four years.

But he knew it was there all afternoon, and he did not look at it, and the not-looking took a kind of effort that he had not had to spend on anything since the second winter.

***

She had come to the house in the year the west gallery burned.

Heiteng had been nineteen hundred and some and had not been anything yet, and the thing he remembered was not the fire. It was the room afterward. His father’s steward had put a child in one of the small rooms off the second stair, and there had been no ceremony and no explanation and nobody had told him anything, because nobody told anybody anything in that house, and he had gone along the corridor on the third morning and found the door open and a very small black dragon sitting on the end of a bed that was too big for her, entirely upright, with her hands in her lap, waiting to be told what she was.

Nobody had ever told her.

The house had fed her and taught her and given her work, and she had got extremely good at it, and in sixteen thousand years not one person in that building had ever sat down opposite her and said this is what you are to us. That was not cruelty. It was the house. It had been the house for nine thousand years before he was born and it had been the house when he took it, and it was the house now, and he had inherited the whole of it including the part where nobody says anything, and he had never once in his life improved on it.

A thing had been decided about her a long time ago and never told her either.

There had been meaning to. There had always been a reason not to yet — a season, a matter, a thing to settle first — and the seasons had gone past in the way they do when you are going to live forever, and then he had gone down a road, and the floor had gone out from under him, and the reason not to yet had become a whole world’s width of water.

Nine lines to a house she was not in.

That was the first thing he had ever told her.

***

Jayde came through the yard at the ninth bell with her coat over one arm and dust to the knee, back from wherever she had been for six days, and stopped.

”You look like somebody has died.”

”Nobody has died.”

She looked at him a moment longer than that deserved. Four years, and she had never once pushed at a thing he had not opened, and she did not push now — but she waited, which is different, and harder to stand.

”If it becomes my business,” she said, ”tell me before it becomes everybody’s.”

”It will not become anybody’s.”

”That is not what I asked for.”

”No,” said Heiteng. ”It is not.”

She went on up the yard.

He watched her go and thought, with the clarity of a man who has just failed at something small, that she had given him the door twice in nine words and he had shut it twice, and that this was the whole of what was the matter with his house, and that he had carried it across a world in his own chest and set it down in a granary yard and gone on living in it.

***

Heiteng stopped work at full dark and went up to the top of the yard, where the ground falls away toward the water, and stood there with his hands in his belt.

That happened most days. Jayde had never once asked him what he was looking at, which was one of perhaps four reasons he could still stand to be in a room with her after four years of being a foreigner in it.

Nothing, was the answer to what he was looking at. That was the answer, and nobody had ever needed to hear it.

If I believe you, he had said to his brother, then I have done a thing I cannot undo.

Heiteng turned it over in the dark and found it was still true and still not the whole of it.

The whole of it was this: there was no version of believing the dwarf that did not also require him to believe that she had stood in a hall four feet from a demon king, asked three questions, been given nothing, and gone out of that hall and across a realm and down a road with a torn core and a woman’s name she had invented for herself — and that every single door on that road had been shut by somebody who loved her and had decided she did not need to know.

Him. Ren. The house. All of them, in order, doing the correct thing.

And there had been a fold of paper going up that road in Ashwhisper with nothing in it but seven lines and a letter, and a piece of dwarf work in his shirt the size of two thumbnails that would have carried her down whole.

He turned that one over as well, and went all the way to the bottom of it, which he had been declining to do since the sixth bell.

If the token had gone up the road with the letter, it would not have been in his shirt.

And a man who sends it away is a man who goes home the way she would have come — the long way, through the counting, with the Laws all over him and a core that does not refill.

He had never once considered it. Not in Ashwhisper, not in four years, not for the length of a breath.

That was the part he stood in the dark with.

***

There was not much sleep that night, and in the morning he did a thing he did not call anything.

The belief was not there. He wanted that understood, and there was nobody to understand it, so he understood it himself, standing in the dark at the fourth bell with his hand flat on the cold rail of the weighbridge: I do not believe it.

But he watched.

Not for her. There was nothing to watch for; if she had landed he would have known, and he had not known. He watched as a man watches a wall he has been told has a crack in it that he cannot see. The arrivals lists at Kaelport, which Ryo keeps, got read — a month of them in an afternoon, and what was in them was fishermen and factors and a man from the Kessig side with a bad debt. A word went to two of the dragons about the eastern road, phrased as a question about weather. He stood at the top of the yard at dusk with his hands in his belt for rather longer than he usually did.

And every morning, out of a habit he had not had since the second winter, he reached for the floor of his own hall.

Every morning it was not there.

Which is what it had been for four years, and what it would be for as long as she was a world away and safe, and by the eleventh day he had stopped noticing that he was checking, and by the twentieth he had stopped checking.

The month went past.

Nothing came up the eastern road. Nothing came off the arrivals lists. No dwarf wrote to him, because dwarves do not write to people twice. Hilgrund’s letter had been four months on a surface road since Emberrise and would arrive at Zhū’kethara when it arrived, and nobody on this world knew that it existed.

He was wrong about the safe, and about the world away, and he had the width of it wrong by nine days’ walking.

Heiteng finished the month, and the sill in the east store got lifted, and the carts came on Temperday.

And he did not think about the token in his shirt again until the day he had to.
