Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 574 -569: The Part That Came After

Location: Zhū’kethara — The East Gate, then the Storehouse

Date/Time: 10 Blazepeak 9943 AZI, Quenchday

Realm: Upper Realm

Dwarf paper has a smell, and Ren knew it before he knew what the letter said.

Mineral, and faintly of smoke, and under both a dryness that no paper made in the Upper Realm ever has, because nothing made in the Upper Realm has ever been kept a thousand feet under a mountain in air that has not moved since the Sundering. Kaelen brought it into the east gatehouse at the third bell, folded once and sealed with a mark Ren had seen exactly twice in his life, and put it on the table in front of him, and did not sit down.

“Two of them brought it,” Kaelen said. “Dwarves. They came on foot from the gate, and they will not come in, and they will not leave until somebody tells them it has been read.”

“Who is the mark?”

“Thorgrund. The clan signatory.”

Ren looked at the seal for a moment longer than a seal needs.

“Nine days out of the Mid Realm,” Kaelen said, “and the courier told the gate it was over a signatory’s mark. I have never in my life heard a dwarf use that phrase to a gate.”

***

It was short.

That was the first thing, and he understood it before he understood anything else. Four lines and then a fifth, in a square unhurried hand, with no greeting that was not also information and no courtesy that was not also a warning.

Da’Ren. My clan-sister has written to you already and you may not have it yet. This is the part that came after.

Ren stopped there and looked up.

“There is another letter.”

“Not at this gate.” Kaelen did not need to be told what that meant and had already begun working through it. “Nothing from the clans since the turn of the year, and nothing at the west gate either, or I would have it. If it went out in Emberrise, it is four months on a road.”

“It did not go by the deep road, then.”

“Nothing that leaves dwarf ground does.”

The rest got read.

Then he read it again, because the first time he had been reading for the fact and the second time he wanted to read for the man who had written it, and the man who had written it had spent most of an hour deciding how few words he could use.

A black dragon of the house of Heiteng came to Vor Hakkun on the working days of this year and asked for a Realm Seal to the Lower Realm. She would not say why, at any price.

She was refused, because a holding cannot issue one. The matter came to me, and I granted it on the eighteenth of Sparkfall.

She did not go home. She went down on the twelfth, without it.

I am told what going down without one does. I am telling you because my clan-sister wrote the word unconditional on a page in Emberrise, and I find that it means I do not get to decide that this is not your business.

Ren put it down on the table and put his hand flat on it.

***

The twenty-third of Ashwhisper.

She had stood in his hall. Taller than he was, with the mercury in her eyes and a bolt of gray twill over one arm that she had turned back at the corner with two fingers to show him the wrong side, and she had not asked him anything she could not have been refused. She had asked if Heiteng was held, and he had said no. She had asked if Heiteng was alive, and he had taken rather too long about saying yes. And she had asked the one thing that mattered, which was what is down there, and he had said that is his to tell you.

It had been. It still was. It had been meant, and it had been correct, and she had thanked him for it in the flat courteous voice of a woman who has been told nothing and knows exactly how much nothing she has been told, and had gone.

And Heiteng, on the stone that same night, had said: She will go home. She is not a woman who argues in a hall that is not hers. She will go home, and she will wait for me to write.

She had gone to a dwarf mountain instead.

And then she had gone down.

“Kaelen.”

“Da’Ren.”

“Say the whole of what a Seal is. Not the part everybody knows.”

Kaelen was quiet for a moment, which from Kaelen, is a paragraph.

“Everybody knows it caps you,” he said. “Down at Apexblight, about on the ground as Blazecrowned, and every demon who has ever crossed has grumbled about the months of it. What nobody says out loud, because it is dwarf business and dwarves do not explain, is the other half. The Seal does not take it. It holds it. It keeps the whole of what is over the line somewhere safe, and it gives it back at the top of the road, and you come up what you went down as.” He turned one hand over. “It is a loan. There is a return written into it. That is the entire reason they are worth what they are worth.”

“And without one.”

“Without one, nothing is holding anything.” Kaelen’s voice did not change at all, which was how Ren knew he had thought about this before today. “The Laws take it. All of it that is over the line, all at once, and what they take goes down into the world, and the world keeps it. There is no clause about giving it back. Not on the road up. Not ever. And a core does not lose that much that fast without tearing, and a torn core does not refill.”

“So it is both.”

“It is both. She is under the ceiling for the rest of her life, and she is damaged for the rest of it as well, and the second one is the one that will matter, because the first is only a number.”

Ren sat with that.

The eighteenth of Sparkfall. The twelfth. Six days.

A dwarf had spent weeks deciding to give her the thing she had asked for, and she had not waited for it, because she had not known it was coming, because nobody had told her anything, because the only person on this world who could have told her why she did not need to go was on the far side of a passage that counts what goes through it and had written her nine lines and a signature.

***

“Tell the dwarves it has been read,” Ren said. “Tell them it has been read by me, in person, and that I would like to thank the signatory, and that I will write it myself before they go back.”

“They will not wait for a letter.”

“Then the thanks go by the gate after them.” He stood. “And then find me a man for the other end of the stone. I do not care what Heiteng is doing. Tell him it is not the grain.”

+++

It took until the sixth bell.

That is the thing about a stone that nobody who has not used one understands. It is not a voice in the air. It is two men standing at either end of a world, each with a hand on a piece of the same rock, and the one on the far end has to be there — walked to it, told why, stood at it — and the man on the far end that afternoon had been, by the account of whoever fetched him, a very long way down a granary yard having an argument about carts.

Ren waited in the storehouse with the door shut and the light going.

The letter was on a grain sack beside him. There had been no need to look at it again since the gatehouse, and he looked at it anyway, twice, which he noted, and did not stop himself doing.

Then the stone warmed under his hand, and the breathing on the other end of it was Heiteng’s.

“Brother.”

“Brother.” Low. Unhurried. Irritated, faintly, in the way of a man who has been fetched off a job he was enjoying. “Your man said it was not the grain.”

“It is not the grain.”

“Then what is it. I have fourteen carts standing in a yard and a haulage man who believes I have gone to consult a higher authority, which I suppose I have.”

Ren did not waste any of it.

“A letter came from the clans this morning. Thorgrund. Over his signatory’s mark.” He kept his voice exactly level. “Cangwei went to Vor Hakkun on the working days after the turn of the year. She asked for a Realm Seal to the Lower Realm. She would not say why. She was refused. She did not go home.”

Nothing from the stone.

“She went down on the twelfth of Sparkfall,” said Ren. “Without one.”

***

The silence went on long enough that he thought for a moment the stone had failed.

Then Heiteng said: “No.”

Not loudly. Not angrily. The way a man says the name of a street he has lived on his whole life, when a stranger tells him it is called something else.

“It is in the signatory’s hand, Heiteng. I have it in front of me.”

“I do not doubt the signatory’s hand. I doubt the dwarf. He did not see her. He was not there. You have just told me he granted a Seal six days after she was supposed to have gone down without it, which means he spent weeks deciding a question about a woman he had never met, and then somebody told him she had gone, and he believed them.” A pause. “Who told him?”

“He does not say.”

“He does not say. So it is a dwarf’s word about another dwarf’s word about a woman neither of them has ever seen.”

“It is a signatory’s word that he thought it serious enough to put over his mark and send nine days to a foreign king. I have been king a long time, brother. That has never once happened to me.”

The stone was quiet again.

“She went home,” Heiteng said. “I wrote to her in Ashwhisper. I put nine lines on a sheet, and I told her I was not held and that she was to stay where she was, and she did not answer, and I know what her not answering means. If she had disagreed with me, I would have heard about it from four feet away.”

And Ren, standing in the dark with his hand on a stone, did the arithmetic that he had not done in the gatehouse because he had not had the last piece.

“Where did you send it?”

“To her house.”

“When did it leave you?”

“The end of Ashwhisper.”

“She left Vor Hakkun the morning after the Void Days,” said Ren. “On foot. East. And she did not go home.” He let that sit exactly as long as it needed. “Your letter went to a house she was not in, brother. It went to a house she had left to a steward. I do not know where it is now. But I do not think she has ever read it.”

***

He heard Heiteng breathe out.

It went on for a long time, and it was not a sound Ren had ever heard him make, not in nine thousand years of standing next to him in worse places than a storehouse. It was the sound of a very large animal that has been struck somewhere it did not know it could be struck, and has not yet decided whether to fall down.

Then it stopped.

“Her steward would have sent it on,” Heiteng said.

“To where?”

No answer.

“Heiteng. To where. She went east from a dwarf mountain on foot, and nobody saw her take to the air. Where does a steward send a letter for a woman in that?”

“I would know.”

Ren waited.

“If she had come down,” said Heiteng, and his voice had gone very low and very flat, the deep-water voice, the one he uses for things that are not going to be argued with, “I would know. Four years I have not had her, because she has been on the other side of the world and it does not cross. If she had come down, it would have come back the moment she landed. I would have felt it on the twelfth of Sparkfall wherever I was standing, and I would have been in the air before I had finished feeling it, and I would have been there by nightfall.”

“And you have not felt it.”

“I have not felt anything. Not on the twelfth. Not since. Not today.” A breath. “That is not a thing I can explain to you, brother, and I am not going to try. But it has never once in my life been wrong.”

“Then what you are feeling is nothing.”

“Yes.”

“And nothing is not the same as her not being there.”

The stone went very quiet.

“It is for us,” said Heiteng.

***

Ren did not push again.

Nine thousand years is long enough to know the exact moment at which a man stops being argued with and starts being argued at, and it had arrived, and he was not going to spend the rest of what he had on the far side of it. He stood in the storehouse with his hand on a stone and his brother breathing on the other end of a world, and he said the only other thing he had.

“The signatory wrote one more line. It is his own, not the record. I will give it to you as he gave it to me.”

Nothing. ℯℯ𝑙.

“I am told what going down without one does.”

It landed. Ren heard it go into Heiteng and not come back out again.

“There is no return written into it, Heiteng. Not a cap. A taking. It goes into the world, and the world keeps it, and the core tears on the way.”

“I know what it does.”

“Then you know why a dwarf wrote to me.”

“I know why he wrote,” said Heiteng, very quietly, “and I know that she is at home, and I know that I would feel her if she were not, and I am going to go back out into that yard now and finish the argument about the carts, because the alternative is to believe you, and if I believe you then I have done a thing I cannot undo, and I am not going to do that on the word of a dwarf who has never seen her face.”

“Brother—”

“Thank the signatory for me,” said Heiteng. “Tell him it was kindly meant.”

The stone went cold.

***

Ren stood in the dark for a long time.

Not once in nine thousand years had Ren heard Heiteng refuse to know a thing. Heiteng was the one who went and looked. That was the whole of him — the man who went down to a rubbish heap on a feeling and stayed four years because the feeling turned out to be right, who had put his hand on a silver queen’s cloth and his whole house’s name behind a woman nobody had heard of, who could be wrong about a great many things and had never once in his life been wrong by declining to look.

He was declining now.

And Ren understood — standing in a storehouse with the light gone and a dwarf’s letter on a grain sack — that the thing Heiteng was declining to look at was not the letter. It was the nine lines. The ones he had sent in Ashwhisper and taken such comfort from not hearing back about.

Because if she had never read them, then she had gone down believing whatever she believed when she stood in Ren’s hall with a bolt of cloth over her arm.

And the only person on this world who knew what that was, was Ren.

That is his to tell you, he had said to her.

Ren picked up the letter, and folded it along the fold Thorgrund had made, and put it inside his coat.

Then he went to write to a dwarf he had never met, to thank him for a thing that had cost him weeks and got him nothing, and to tell him — because it was owed, and because the man had kept a word his clan-sister wrote — that it had been kindly meant, and that it had not been believed.
