Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 566: Chapter 561: The Adit

Location:Denvahr’s Holding, four days east of Zhū’kethara

Date/Time:7 Scorchwind 9943 AZI, Kindleday

Realm:Upper Realm

You could hear it from the top of the track, which was the part nobody had prepared him for.

Ren came over the rise at the ninth hour with Ilvaren behind him and the whole margin laid out flat and pale in front, and stopped, because there was a sound coming up out of Denvahr’s holding that had not been there in four years and possibly not in forty. Not loud. Under the goats and under the wind and under a man calling to somebody about a gate, and once you had it you could not stop having it.

Water, moving, and not stopping.

He stood on the rise a moment longer than a king needs to and then went down.

***

It is not a well.

Kaelen had been extremely firm about that in the reporting and had made everybody else be firm about it too, on the grounds that if you let a thing be called the wrong name for a season you will be correcting scholars about it in nine hundred years. It is an adit. It is a gallery driven into a hillside on a very slight rise, eleven hundred paces back into the shoulder of the margin, and it comes out of a stone face above the holding with a lip cut on it, and the water runs out of it and has been running out of it since the twenty-ninth of Ashbloom and shows no sign whatsoever of stopping.

Nobody dug down.

That was the whole of it, and it had taken Ren eight days after Hadrek to arrive at, and the arrival had been the worst eight days he had spent in a long while, because the answer had been standing in front of him the entire time in Vorthen’s own words, and he had heard them as an insult instead of an instruction.

Cutting is not moving.

The question had been the wrong one for a month. How do we get down. Down was a question about a hole, and a hole is a thing you move ground to make, and demons do not move ground. A realm of architects, and he had taken them and set them to be laborers and had buried a man doing it.

The right question, when it came, had come in an ordinary voice from a mason called Bervik on the second crew who had been listening to Kaelen say shaft for nine days and had finally put his hand up.

Where is the water, Da’Ren?

Not under the field. It has never been under the field. It comes off the range and runs east through the shoulder of the margin in rock that has been carrying it since before anybody was here, and the holders’ wells have always gone down to it and it has never once come from below. Denvahr’s great-grandfather did not find water by going deep. He found it by going deep in the right place.

So do not go down.

Go across.

***

Four hundred and ten demons cut that gallery in thirty-one days and did not move a basket of spoil that they did not choose to move, and they were bored by the end of it.

That was the part Ren had not been ready for and had thought about a good deal since.

It was not work. It was the thing they do. A man puts his hand on a face and takes stone out of it in the shape he has decided on, and another man behind him squares what has been taken and cuts the seat for the timber that is not going to be needed, because they had put timber in anyway out of a habit ten thousand years deep and had all agreed it was ridiculous and had done it. They had argued about the fall. They had argued about the fall for four evenings — one in a hundred, one in a hundred and twenty — and had settled on one in a hundred and ten and had then cut the whole length of gallery to one in a hundred and ten from end to end, in the dark, by hand, and the water had come out of the lip within a thumb’s width of where a man had said it would on a slate a month earlier.

The thing that had killed Hadrek in nine days had been two hundred and forty feet of sand.

This was eleven hundred paces of rock, and it had cost them nobody.

***

Denvahr was at the lip with his hands in his belt.

Most days since the twenty-ninth he had been at that lip, by all accounts, and was affecting not to be. There was a boy with him who had positioned himself exactly where the spray came off the cut stone and was pretending that was an accident.

”Da’Ren.”

”Denvahr.”

They looked at the water together for a while, because that is what the water is for.

”It doesn’t stop,” Denvahr said.

”No.”

”I keep coming out at night.” He said it as a complaint. ”I have gone out to that yard with a bucket on a rope and an opinion about the rope since before your house had this margin, and now there’s a thing on my hill that runs all night whether I’m looking at it or not, and I come out to check it’s still doing it, and it is.”

”It will go on doing it.”

”That’s what the mason says.” Denvahr turned his head. ”He says there’s a fall in it, and the fall is what does it, and the fall doesn’t get tired. He drew it for me on a door.”

”Bervik drew it on your door.”

”On the inside,” said Denvahr. ”He asked first.”

The boy had got both hands into the run now and had given up pretending.

”That’s Tevan,” said Denvahr. ”He’s eleven, and he’s a great fool.”

Ren looked again and understood the whole of it in one go, because the boy was too small for his age and his ears came to a point, and there is not a demon child on this world above a year old.

”He came across with the eight hundred thousand.”

”His mother did. She lasted two winters.” Denvahr’s face did not do anything at all, which is how Ren knew. ”Theron’s people had him on a list for the western holdings, and I had a holding and no one on it, and nobody has ever come back about the list, and I have stopped writing to ask.”

”He is standing in the water.”

”He’s stood in it every day since it came.” The old man sniffed. ”He’d never seen it come out of the ground. Not once, not on this world nor the other one. Water’s a thing in a bucket, and there’s never enough of it, and you don’t put your hands in it. He got them wet the first morning, and he looked at me, and he didn’t know what to do with his face.”

Ren watched an eleven-year-old soak both sleeves to the elbow on the eastern margin.

”I will have the fall explained to him properly,” he said.

”He’ll want that. He’s been asking me, and I’m no use.” Denvahr rolled his shoulder. ”I’ll tell him it’s the king’s business and he’ll be insufferable for a month.”

***

Vorthen came up the hill at midday without the plate.

It was over one shoulder in a roll, which is not the same as not having it, and Ren noted that and noted that he was not going to mention it, and the two of them stood at the top of the cut and looked down the line of it into the dark.

”It is a good gallery,” Vorthen said.

”It is.”

”It is a very good gallery. I have been in four hundred of them, and I have been in perhaps nine that were cut like that, and two of those were royal, and one of them was mine.” A hand went flat on the face where the lip had been dressed. ”Four hundred and ten of them, thirty-one days, and not one of them thinks they did anything. I asked the mason what the difficult part had been, and he had to go away and consider it and came back and said the fall.”

”It was the fall.”

”It was not the fall. The fall was four evenings of argument between competent men, and that is not difficulty, that is a Hammerday.” The hand came off the rock. ”Do not let them tell you it was easy because it was easy for them. That is a thing a race does to itself and then wonders in nine thousand years why nobody wrote anything down.”

Ren turned that over.

”Kaelen is writing it down.”

”He is writing down a gradient.” Vorthen shifted the roll on his shoulder. ”Get somebody to write down that you had a realm of men who could do this and you did not know it. That is the part that will be useful to whoever is standing here after you.”

They walked back down together.

Halfway, Vorthen said, without changing anything in his voice: ”It is still not a way in.”

”I know.”

”I want to be certain you know it, because there is water on that hill and a boy standing in it and a man who has stopped going out with a bucket, and it would be very easy to come up this track and feel that something had been solved.”

”Nothing has been solved. There are two of them awake under my ground and I have no door into either, and I have had none since you told me they were there.” Ren did not slow down. ”What I have is four hundred and ten men who know something I did not know a month ago, and I will be asking them what else they can cut, and I will be asking them properly this time.”

Vorthen made a sound that was almost approval and did not commit to it.

***

Bervik was at the third turning with a rule and a lamp, checking a fall that had not moved since the water came and was not going to.

He was perhaps four hundred years old, which in a mason is nothing, and he had a flat sort of face and a way of holding a rule that suggested he had not put it down since he was a boy. He straightened when Ren came down the gallery and did the small stiff thing a working man does instead of a bow.

”Da’Ren.”

”You asked where the water was.”

”I did.” Bervik looked mildly ill about it. ”I would like to say I had thought it through.”

”Had you?”

”No. I had heard the word shaft nine days running, and I had got tired of it.” He turned the rule over in his hands. ”It is what you say to an apprentice, that. First thing you say. Where is the water, and then where is the stone, and then you may have an opinion about a hole. I have said it four hundred times and I had never once heard anybody not say it.”

”Nobody in that yard said it.”

”No.” A pause of the correct length. ”And I did not say it for nine days either, Da’Ren, and I would like that in whatever gets written, because a man died in the meantime and it was in my mouth the whole time and I kept it there because there was a king standing at the top of the hole.”

Ren stood in the dark with water going past his boots.

”Say it faster next time.”

”Yes.”

”That is not a reprimand. That is an instruction, and it is the only one I have for you, and I would like you to hold me to the other half of it.” He looked at the mason properly. ”Which is that I will be easier to say it to.”

Bervik thought about that for a while and then went back to his fall, which was the right answer.

***

Hadrek’s name went on the lip.

Not a monument. Kaelen had drafted three and Ren had refused all three and had then, at the end of a long evening, explained why — that a monument is a thing you put up when you have finished, and that he had not finished, and that he was not going to stand in front of a stone about a man who died in a hole that was never going to work.

So: the lip of the adit, where the water comes out, cut small into the dressed face at about chest height, in the plain register a mason uses for a date.

HADREK. 20 SPARKFALL 9943.

Nothing else. No rank, because he had not had one worth the cutting. No sentence, because Ren had not been able to write one that was not about himself.

Ren put two fingers on it on the way past and did not stop walking.

The boy would ask about it eventually. Somebody would tell him. That was the arrangement and it was a better one than a stone in a yard nobody visits, because a thing with water running past it gets looked at every day by people who are not thinking about it, and that is how a name lasts.

***

Kaelen was waiting at the bottom with a slate and a face.

”Heiteng wants you on the stone. He has been asking since the second bell, and he will not tell me what it is about.”

Forty-seven days. Ren had put it out of his head twice a week for forty-seven days with a discipline he was not particularly proud of, and had told himself the number was reasonable — a stone at each end that two men have to be standing at, a yard on the other side of the world, and a woman who has a continent to run and no obligation to him whatsoever.

***

He took it alone, in the storehouse, with the door shut.

”She says no,” Heiteng said.

”No.”

”No. Not one since the first. Not one nest, not one chamber, nothing that had been emptied by anything.” The low voice came up out of the stone, entirely level. ”Her words were that if there is such a thing on this continent, she has not put a foot in the same county as it.”

Ren stood with the stone in his hands.

”She went and checked,” Heiteng said. ”That is why it is forty-seven days and not nine. She did not answer you out of her head. She went back through every one of them, and she put people on the ones she was not sure about, and then she told me to tell you no.”

”That is an answer.”

”It is the answer you asked for. You will notice she gave you the one you did not want.”

”I noticed.”

There was a pause at the other end, and it was a demon’s pause, and Ren knew the shape of it, which is the shape of a man deciding how much of a thing he is permitted to hand over.

”There is a second part and she made me say it back to her twice.” Heiteng did not hurry it. ”Ask her again in a year.”

”Why a year?”

Nothing from the stone.

”Heiteng.”

”Because she has a way of looking now that she did not have in Sparkfall, and if there is one on this continent she expects to find it from a direction nobody here has ever looked from, and if she finds it she will tell you the same day.”

”That is her phrasing.”

”That is her phrasing, and it is all of the phrasing you are getting.”

Ren waited. He was good at that and had been for a very long time, and he let it run out to the end of what it was worth, and got nothing back but a stone in his hands and his brother breathing on the other side of a world.

”I have seen it,” Heiteng said at last. ”I am not going to tell you what it is. Do not ask me again and do not send Kaelen at it sideways, because he is clever and I will know.”

”I will not send Kaelen.”

”Good.”

”Is it hers?”

”Everything down here is hers,” said Heiteng, ”and that is also all of the phrasing you are getting, and I am aware of exactly how that sounds, and I am saying it anyway.”

Ren let it stand.

”One more,” said Heiteng. ”She told me to say it in the order she said it, so I am. Thank you for asking it that way. Most people do not.”

And then nothing, because Heiteng is not a man who decorates a thing after he has put it down.

Behind Ren’s ribs the Vor’kalth moved.

Not much and not far. It had been standing in one place with its head toward the eastern gate since Ashwhisper, awake, aware, entirely turned away, and had taken nothing he offered it in four months — not the shaft, not the windlass, not Hadrek under a cart at full dark.

Now it turned its head.

Two breaths, perhaps three. It put the whole of its attention on the stone in his hands, and it was not the attention of a thing being shown something. It was the flat total attention of a thing that has heard a sound it knows.

Then it went back to the east, and stood where it had been standing, and would not come when he called it.

Ren did not move for a while.

He had spent four months offering that animal a war and a dead man and the whole margin, and it had not so much as blinked. Nine lines of somebody else’s arithmetic, read out of a stone by his brother, and it had turned round.

He put that with the other things and did not look at it either.

Except that he did not get off the stone.

Ren waited. Nine thousand years is long enough to know the difference between a man who has finished and a man who is standing in a room with something in his hands.

”Say it.”

”This part is mine, not hers.” A breath came up out of the stone. ”Four days ago she took me somewhere and showed me something.”

Ren did not ask where and did not ask what.

”I have stood next to that woman for four years and argued with her about carts,” Heiteng said. ”I thought I had the size of her. I did not have the size of her. I was not within a continent of the size of her, and I have spent four days finding that out, and I have not slept properly since, and I am telling you this because there is nobody else alive I am permitted to tell.”

Ren turned the stone over in his hands and did not say anything.

”You are a fortunate man, brother. You do not know how fortunate and I am not able to explain it to you.” A pause, and then, in the flattest voice Ren had ever heard him use: ”Whatever you have got in your head about that woman — it is not big enough.”

The stone went quiet.

Ren stood in the dark with it for some time, and eventually put it down on a grain sack, and did not manage to make any of it mean anything at all, and filed the whole of it in the place where he kept the things that were not his to have, which was becoming crowded.

***

Ren stood in a dark storehouse for rather longer than he had intended to.

A direction nobody has ever looked from. He turned that over the way he turned everything over, and got nothing out of it, and filed it where he filed the things that were not his to have — and found, slightly to his irritation, that what he was actually holding was not the puzzle at all.

Forty-seven days, one question, and somewhere in the middle of the answer a woman he had never met had stopped and taken the trouble to say that.

He wrote the whole of it out that evening, in his own hand, and got it word perfect, because he had not been doing anything else since the second bell.

Then he wrote it out a second time, and put that one somewhere that was not the book, and did not examine the reason.

Then he went back up the hill, because there was a boy up there who wanted to know about the fall, and a demon king who has been given an afternoon and cannot spend it on anything better than that has been doing the job wrong for a very long time.
