Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 558: Chapter 553: One Question

Location:Denvahr’s Holding, four days East of Zhū’kethara

Date/Time:20 Sparkfall 9943 AZI, Hammerday

Realm:Upper Realm

The spoil heap had been growing for nine days, and it smelled of nothing.

That was the part Ren could not stop coming back to. Ordinary ground has an opinion about being opened. Turn a field over, and it gives you something — wet mineral, root, the sourness where a thing has been rotting quietly at two feet and did not expect company. This came up out of the shaft in baskets, dry and pale and fine as flour, and a man could stand with his face in a basket of it and get nothing at all, and the diggers had stopped noticing by the second day.

He noticed every time.

The shaft head stood a hundred and twenty paces out from where the well had been. That distance had been Kaelen’s, arrived at over four evenings with a rule and a piece of string and an argument with himself, on the reasoning that the field had taken the well because the well was a door the field already knew about, and that a hole cut somewhere the field had no history with might be permitted to stand long enough to be useful.

It was a guess dressed as a method. Kaelen had said so himself, in front of witnesses, the way he said everything.

Nine days. Two hundred and forty feet.

Denvahr came out at the third hour with water for the line, as he had every day, and stood at the lip with Ren and looked down it.

Denvahr was not a big man. Four generations on a holding at the dead edge of the eastern margin had bred a short, wide, unhurried kind of person out here, and Denvahr had the hands of somebody who had been pulling stones out of a yard since he could walk, and he had lost a well and a field and had not once asked when he would get either of them back.

”Two hundred and forty,” he said.

”Two hundred and forty-one, at the sixth bell.”

”How deep was the other one?”

”A thousand,” said Ren. ”Perhaps more.”

Denvahr took that without any change of expression at all.

”So this is nothing,” he said.

”This is not nothing. This is the first two hundred and forty feet of it.”

”Da’Ren.” Denvahr put the bucket down. ”I’ve a boy of eleven who could do that arithmetic, and he’s not clever. Nine days for two hundred and forty, and there’s near a thousand under us.”

”There is a second shaft going in at Thalvek and a third being surveyed at Dur’aketh,” Ren said. ”I am not doing this one hole at a time because I am hopeful about this one hole.”

”No,” Denvahr agreed. ”You’re doing it because you’ve got nothing else to do with the men.”

Ren let that stand, because it was not far enough from true to argue with.

Vorthen came down the line at the fourth hour, which he did every day at the fourth hour, and looked into the shaft for about as long as it takes to look into a shaft.

The plate had not come off in twelve days. He wore it on a holding where the most dangerous thing in four days’ ride was a man with a mattock, and he wore it while he ate, and nobody had asked him about it, because there was nothing to ask. The answer was visible.

”Still two-forty?”

”Two-forty and some.”

”Mm.” Vorthen crouched at the lip with his forearms across his knees. The jade over his old scars had gone silver-white in the flat eastern light. ”You know what you are doing here.”

”I know what I am doing here.”

”Then I will put it out loud anyway, because nobody else on this field is going to. You are digging a well. It is a very good well, and that man will have water out of it in a year if the ground allows, and he is owed it, and I have no argument with any of that.” A piece of the pale spoil came up between finger and thumb, got rubbed, and went down again. ”It is not a way in. You cannot cut a shaft a thousand feet through ground that eats holes and come out inside a chamber you cannot survey, and you know that, and Kaelen knows it, and the men in that hole do not, which is the only reason the hole is still moving.”

Ren let that go past him.

”And they are slow,” Vorthen said, ”and you have not said it out loud yet, so I will. Nine days. Nine days, and every one of those men is Apexblight or better and working Terracore the entire time, and they have moved two hundred and forty feet of soft ground. There is nothing wrong with them. They are doing it correctly. That is the problem.”

”I am aware.”

”You are aware. I watched it happen.” The old man got a fistful of spoil this time and held it. ”There was a stretch of about forty thousand years where a demon who wanted ground had to take it off another demon who also had three essences and considerably better manners than anything you have got now, and hold it afterward, and build something on it that would still be standing when his grandsons were arguing about the roof. Do that for long enough, and you do not get diggers.” He opened his hand. ”You get architects. Best on this world. Ask anybody.”

”We cut the Hall out of a mountain.”

”You did, and there is not a race alive that can cut stone against you, and there never has been, and you have slept under four floors of it your whole life without once wondering how the ceiling stays up.” Vorthen brushed his palm off on his thigh. ”Cutting is not moving. Give a demon a mountain and a thousand years, and he will hand you back something you could show a god. Ask him to shift eight hundred feet of sand by Restday, and he will do it correctly, and slowly, and you will bury somebody.”

”And dragons dig.”

”Dragons dig,” Vorthen agreed, ”because a dragon who wants ground takes it and walks away, and never in his life has to justify the hole to anybody. It is not a talent. It is not even work to them. One of them would put this shaft in between his breakfast and the dark and be bored doing it.”

Ren stood and looked at two hundred and forty feet of nine days.

”I have a realm of architects,” he said, ”and a hole to dig.”

”Yes.”

Ren said nothing.

”Then I will ask the only question I have,” said Vorthen, ”and then I will go back up the line and not ask it again today. What are you going to do about the two that are awake?”

Ren looked east, because east was where the other two circles were, and because he had been looking east for twelve days.

”I do not know yet.”

”That is an answer. It is not a good one, and I am not going to pretend I like it, but it is an answer, and it is honest, which is better than most of what I got out of the last one of you.”

”You keep saying that.”

”I keep meaning it.” Vorthen stood. ”He would have had half the margin on this, and a speech about it, and the speech would have been the point.”

***

It went at the sixth hour.

Ren was forty paces off with Kaelen and a survey board when the note of the windlass changed. That was all it was to begin with — a rope under a load turning over a drum makes a particular sound, and the sound went flat, flat as a struck thing goes when what it is fastened to has stopped being solid.

Everything after that took less time than it takes to read about it.

The shaft did not collapse inward, which is what a shaft does. It went down. The whole cut of it, two hundred and forty feet of cased hole with timber every eight, dropped straight along its own line as though somebody had removed the thing the bottom had been standing on, and the ground came together above it in a long soft exhalation of pale dust, and where there had been a shaft head with a windlass and a crew of nine there was a dish in the sand about twenty paces across.

Ren was in it before the dust was.

There was no thinking in it, and he would not afterward have been able to give an account of the first four seconds. Three men had gone down with the head. Four had gone into the dish on the slide and were under a foot of spoil and were shouting, which was the best sound available. Two had been thrown clear.

The four came out fast, because a foot of dry spoil is nothing, and the men on either side of them dug like animals with their hands.

The three took until dark.

They got the first one at the ninth hour, alive, with a shoulder that was going to be a matter for Sarvhek and a great deal of luck. They got the second an hour later, alive, unmarked, and unable to speak for most of a day afterward. The third was called Hadrek and had been at the bottom of the hole when the bottom went, and they got him at full dark, and by then everybody on that field knew what they were digging for and dug for him anyway and did not stop until they had him.

Ren carried him up out of the dish himself.

There was no injury on him of any kind. Two hundred and forty feet of collapsing shaft had come down on top of him in a hole, and he had come out of it dusty, which is what always happens, and he stood in a field in the eastern margin at full dark holding a dead man who had been alive at the sixth hour, and there was nothing on him to show for it.

That was the arrangement. It had been the arrangement for a very long time.

***

Kaelen came to him near midnight with a lamp and did not open with an apology, which Ren noticed and was grateful for and did not say.

”The distance was wrong,” Kaelen said.

”You do not know that.”

”A hundred and twenty paces was not far enough. That much I have. What far enough would be, I do not have, and there is no way of finding out except by putting another shaft and another crew somewhere further and waiting.” He set the lamp on the survey board. ”Which I will do, if you tell me to. I want to be clear that I will do it. I also want it on the record that I do not think there is a distance.”

Ren said nothing for a while.

Out past the lamplight, the men were sitting in ones and twos around three fires, not talking much. Somebody had laid Hadrek out under a cart with a coat over him because a cart is what there is.

”That is not all of it.”

”No.” Kaelen turned the survey board face down, which was the nearest he came to temper. ”The field is not falling in. I have been on this ground nine days, and I have watched it three times now, and it does not fall in, and a thing that falls in leaves an edge. This closes. There is a difference and it matters, because a thing that falls in has run out of strength and a thing that closes has not.” A pause. ”We are not fighting a hazard, Da’Ren. We are working against something that is doing a job. And I do not know whose job it is or when it was set, and there is no scroll in that cellar that has ever heard of it.”

”Vorthen?”

”I asked him yesterday. He has nothing.” Kaelen let that sit exactly long enough. ”He had never stood on a dead field in his life until you brought him to one. Everything he knows about what is under it, he learned in his own yard twelve days ago, from you. He is two hundred and fifty thousand years old, and on this he is a fortnight behind me.”

***

Ren stood at the edge of the dish for a long time after Kaelen had gone.

The arithmetic was not complicated, and that was the trouble with it. Laying it out anyway, one piece at a time, the way he had trained himself into on the day he understood how many people were downstream of how he thought.

His realm had been given three, in the last war, and three was all it had ever had. They had not spread, and they had not multiplied, and all three of them were cold, and for two years he had let his people write nothing living on that and take comfort from it, and the comfort had been worth exactly what it cost. Nothing had defended his margin. Two animals had woken up under it and eaten what was delivered to them and gone back to sleep, in two places he could now name to within a mile.

Three was never the work.

The work went into the ground on the other side of the world — a breeding pair, buried on a continent nobody in the Upper Realm has ever bothered to think about, at a depth and a spacing that were decided on by somebody with a plan. Not to take the Lower Realm. Nobody wants the Lower Realm. It was put there to drink out of Ala, slowly, for as long as it took, so that when she went down she would stay down longer than she ever had — and the war that is coming, the one his grandchildren would have fought if he had any, would arrive on a world with nothing awake in it to object.

The better part of sixty years to that, if they came on the hour.

They had never once come on the hour. A decade early was as likely as a decade late, and both had happened, so: fifty, or seventy, or any morning in between, and nothing on this world that could narrow it further than that.

He had put the year at the head of the survey draft that morning without once looking at what his hand was doing, as he had put it at the head of everything since he was old enough to be given a pen, as every clerk and every factor and every child in three realms put it at the head of every page they will ever fill.

Nine thousand nine hundred and forty-three years after.

After. It had said after for as long as there had been anybody to write it down, and every soul alive had read it that way and gone on with their morning, and it had been quietly saying before for a very long time.

And on that continent, standing between a sleeping world and the thing that had been drinking from her for nine thousand years, there was a woman closing them one at a time.

How, he did not know. He had gone at it twice, in the roundabout way a man goes at a thing he has no standing to ask about, and had got back exactly as much as he had put in, which is what happens when both parties are careful. What he had was the shape. Half a year of it, and still going, and still one at a time. Not a method that scales, or it would have scaled by now. Not a method with any slack in it, or the pace would be better than it is. And somewhere in the middle of it, a cost that nobody on that side would put a name to, which told him more about the size of the cost than a number would have.

The answer to her war was under his own feet.

There was no getting to it, and no lifting it, and no putting it in a crate, and if he could have put it in a crate he could not have put the crate down a passage that counts what goes through it, and if he had somehow got it down there he would have been handing a woman he had never met a blind thing that eats in a straight line and cannot be told where to stop.

And that was assuming it would live down there at all, in an ambient a fraction of what it had gone to sleep in.

Every door in it was shut. Every single one, and he had spent twelve days walking the length of them with a lamp.

The wind came off the dead field and up over the lip of the dish and had nothing in it.

Behind his ribs the Vor’kalth stood exactly where it had stood for months, head east, awake, aware, entirely turned away. He offered it the shaft and the windlass and Hadrek under the cart, the whole of the day, the way he had offered it everything for ten thousand years.

It took none of it.

But it did not move either, and it had not moved in months, and for the first time it occurred to Ren with any force that a thing which will not turn its head is not the same as a thing which is not looking at anything.

It was facing east.

It had been facing east since Ashwhisper.

***

He wrote the sheet in the small hours, by the last of Kaelen’s lamp, on the back of a survey draft because there was nothing else on that field to write on.

It got a long way in.

The drawing first, because the drawing was the only part that was worth anything — the front edge, the length, the ring and the plates in their inward spiral. Then what it was, in Vorthen’s words rather than his own, because Vorthen’s were better. Then where it came from. Then the part about it having been the least of them, which he wrote out twice and struck out twice and left in the third time.

Then he sat with the pen and did not write the rest.

Because the rest was: there is a thing that would end your war, and it is under my ground, and I cannot reach it, and I could not give it to you if I could, and I do not know whether it would live in your air.

That got read back in his head about four times.

There is a kind of message that is worse than silence, and it is the kind that hands a person a door and then explains, at length and with real feeling, that it is locked. She had a continent, four years of it behind her, and whatever the cost was that nobody over there would name. She did not need to be told that somewhere on another world there was a better way that she could not have. She needed things she could use.

So he turned the sheet over and wrote, on the clean side, in the plainest hand he had:

In all of this work, have you ever come into a nest and found it already empty? Not few. Empty. No shed casing, no midden, nothing dead in it.

If yes — how many, and where, and was there anything in the chamber that did not belong to the worms.

If no, say no. No is an answer and I need it.

Read back: it said nothing about Shaolin, nothing about what was under his ground, and nothing that would put one additional thing on a woman who was already carrying more than he was.

It was one question, and it could be answered in three words, and it was the entire sum of what a demon king with a realm at his back and a standing army and the oldest warrior alive at his shoulder could do about the direction he could not act in.

Folded, it went inside his coat. Kaelen would put it on the crystal at first light, to Heiteng, because there is one channel in the world that reaches that continent, and it has never run to her — everything Ren had ever sent that woman had gone across a yard in another man’s hand, and he had stopped resenting that about a year ago, and had not stopped noticing it.

Then he went and sat with the men at the nearest fire until it got light, because that was the other thing available, and it was not nothing.
