Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 501: Chapter 496: The Homecoming

Location:Dragon estate — main room

Date/Time:2 Frostforge, 9942 AZI (evening)

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

There were not enough cups.

That was the first thing Jayde noticed, and it was the thing she would remember about the whole evening afterward — not the war stories, not the questions, not the moment the room went quiet. The cups. Green had been hoarding the good tea for an occasion that deserved it, and had brought it out, and had then discovered that the estate owned eleven cups and there were rather more than eleven people in the main room.

So Heiteng drank out of a soup bowl.

The Black Dragon King of eighteen thousand years sat cross-legged on a cushion that was much too small for him, holding a chipped kitchen bowl in both hands, mercury-silver eyes half-lidded in the heat coming off the brazier, and did not comment on it once.

The room was not the operations room with the map wall. It was not the cellar. It was the low table and the cushions and the iron brazier Yinxin kept burning through the cold months because the wyrmlings ran warm and the humans did not. Somebody had cooked far too much food. Somebody else had put it on the floor, because the table had run out of surface an hour ago.

Jayde sat with her back against the wall and let it happen around her.

Eden was beside her with Zhi draped across her lap, the small serpent’s scales a calm untroubled blue for the first time in a year. Green had taken the cushion nearest the brazier with her feet tucked under her, fractured emerald eyes watching Jayde over the rim of her cup. White stood — White always stood — with his shoulder against the doorframe and the bone-handled whip still at his belt, because he did not take the whip off, not even for tea.

Yinxin sat across the table with the wyrmlings. Huaxin in her lap. Shenxin beside her, close enough that his shoulder touched her arm, which was as much contact as Shenxin permitted in company. Tianxin cross-legged and slightly apart, bronze-copper eyes muted behind the pendant, wearing the fierce expression of a three-year-old who intended to stay up late and was daring anybody in the room to raise the subject.

Xinglong had folded himself into the corner beside the door and said nothing for the better part of an hour, which was the eldest of the quintet’s usual contribution to a room. Yinglong and Xingteng had come in late, argued briefly about who was sitting where, and settled.

And in the courtyard beyond the window, Canirr and Amaya lay full-sized in the dark, because they could not fit through the doorway and would not have come through it if they could. The link carried everything said inside. They listened the way Panthera listened — completely, and without needing to be invited.

Isha’s light filled the room. Not the blazing diagnostic intensity of the cellar that morning. The warm ambient glow of a keeper settling into a space and quietly making it his — the temperature adjusting, the corners softening, a being who maintained things finding something new to maintain.

”Start from the beginning,” Green said. ”Not the military beginning. The falling.”

***

Jayde told it as a story.

Not a briefing. The way you tell your family about something that happened to you — the version that keeps the shape of the truth and leaves out the parts that would stop the people who love you from sleeping.

”We landed in the Mid Ring,” she said. ”Which was not ideal.”

”Not ideal,” Isha repeated.

”One zone deeper than students are meant to go.”

”The recorded survival rate for that zone is zero,” Eden said pleasantly, into her cup.

”Eden.”

”What? They asked for the beginning.”

Green’s cup did not move. Her eyes did.

”It was manageable,” Jayde said.

”That is the first time you have used that word,” Isha said. ”I am going to keep count.”

”You don’t have to keep count.”

”I keep records. It is my entire function. You may consider it inevitable.”

So she went on, and Isha kept count, and it became apparent within about ten minutes that the two of them had settled into an arrangement neither had negotiated: Jayde told the story light and quick, and Eden — mild, unhurried, absolutely without mercy — supplied the parts Jayde had trimmed off.

The tunnel navigation. Eden’s medical knowledge keeping them fed and watered on what the containment provided. The data dump that had come through in Isha’s last three minutes.

”The information dump was helpful,” Jayde said.

”The information dump nearly killed her,” said Eden.

”That seems an excessive reaction to my filing system.”

”She could not stand for three days. I carried her.”

Green set her cup down.

”You carried her,” she said.

”She’s lighter than she looks.”

”She is thinner than she should be. We covered that this morning.” Green’s fractured eyes came back to Jayde. ”Two. He is counting the word. I am counting the omissions. Continue.”

***

She told them about the dead zone.

That part she did not gloss, because it was the good part — a stretch of tunnel where every Charling signal went silent, where the corruption flatlined, where nothing could receive colony instruction because there was no colony chemistry to carry it. Everything inside that zone was running on whatever was left of its own biology.

”A zero-energy field,” Isha said, and the light sharpened with the unmistakable delight of a scholar who had temporarily forgotten to be worried. ”Naturally occurring?”

”Eden thinks the energy is depleted at a boundary between rock types. It cannot cross.”

”That is fascinating.”

”That is where we found the mantis.”

The room shifted.

”A Charling,” White said. Flat.

”A different kind of Charling. It had been cut off from the colony. Its instinct architecture had gone quiet long enough for something else to grow in the gap.” Jayde turned her cup in her hands. ”It could think. It made choices. It decided I was worth following.”

”It decided,” Isha said.

”It was right.”

Tianxin had come off her cushion without anybody noticing and was now on her knees at the edge of the table.

”You made friends with a Charling,” she breathed. Not horrified. Enthralled. The face of a child hearing the single best thing she had ever heard in her life.

”I rode a Charling,” Jayde said.

The effect on the wyrmlings was immediate and total. Tianxin’s eyes went round. Shenxin’s head came up so fast that his shoulder left his mother’s arm. Huaxin twisted in Yinxin’s lap and stared with her mouth open.

”You rode it?”

”For most of the year. It’s very fast.”

”How fast?”

”Faster than anything with legs has a right to be.”

”Does it have a name?”

”Not yet,” Jayde said. ”It hasn’t picked one.”

Tianxin looked genuinely scandalized. ”It has to have a name.”

”It will. When it wants one.”

Yinxin’s hand settled on Huaxin’s shoulder with the gentle downward pressure of a mother who had felt a launch being prepared. ”Later,” she said. ”Let her finish.”

***

She glossed the arming.

”The fabricator produced crossbows. We trained the students. We put in some defenses.”

”Some defenses,” Eden said.

”Eden—”

”She built kill corridors. Shield walls. Ballista emplacements. A pheromone barrier network.” Eden took an unhurried sip. ”She turned a mountain into a fortress with a machine, an instructor, and eighteen hundred frightened people who had never held a weapon.”

White pushed off the doorframe.

”Crossbows,” he said. ”What design?”

”Light for the squads. Heavy for the big castes. Ballistas at the terminus positions.” A pause she did not quite make small enough. ”And siege lances.”

”Siege lances.”

”Fixed emplacements. Compressed essence-springs driving an alloy rod fast enough to vaporize chitin.”

White looked at her for a long moment, and what was in the steel grey eyes was not concern. It was something Jayde had never once seen there and did not have a name for — the expression of a man who had taught a girl footwork and whip-work and grip strength, and had just been informed that she had gone away and invented artillery.

”Show me the specifications tomorrow,” he said, and sat down.

White sat down. Yinglong made a small noise into her tea.

Eden had gone very still for an entirely different reason.

”Tell them about the ships,” she said.

”There isn’t much—”

”Tell them about the ships, Jayde.”

So she told them about the two Federation vessels that a dimensional tear had deposited inside a sealed containment. About stripping the Resolute to its bones for raw material. About the fabricator, and the orbital probes, and the shuttle she had taken apart piece by careful piece and packed into a ring for later.

The probes, Canirr said from the courtyard, with the clipped precision of a reconnaissance specialist whose professional interest had been engaged against his will. Their range.

”Orbital. High enough up, they can map the entire Lower Realm from above.”

A pause.

The entire Lower Realm.

”Yes.”

We spent a year mapping it on foot, Canirr said. The tone was completely level. On foot. Through mountains. In the rain.

”Your map is better,” Jayde said. ”The probes cannot read pheromone trails or essence signatures. Your data covers everything the technology cannot.”

That is very gracious. A longer pause. I would still like to see the probes.

”Everyone can see the probes.”

”The shuttle flies,” Eden said, to nobody in particular.

”I know it flies.”

”I want to fly it.”

”You will fly it.”

”When?”

”After some things get handled.”

”That is not a date,” Eden said, and Zhi flickered a bright interested green at her throat, and Green laughed out loud for the first time that evening.

***

”And then?” Green said, when the laughing had run out.

”Then the army came.”

The room went quiet. Even Tianxin.

”How large?” Isha asked.

”Large.”

”Jayde.”

”Every caste. Every ring. The Queen moved them as one force. It had never happened before in the containment’s history.”

”How long?” White said.

”Sixty days.”

Nobody spoke. The brazier crackled and spat. Huaxin pressed back into her mother. Shenxin’s hands went flat on the floor — three years old, and running the number sixty against everything he understood about warfare, which was a great deal more than most grown men.

”Sixty days,” Green said. ”With no cultivation.”

”We had crossbows.”

”You had crossbows.”

”And ballistas. And barriers. And—” Jayde stopped, because Eden had drawn breath. ”Don’t.”

”She rode into a breach at a full sprint,” Eden said to the room, ”and cleared it. Seventeen Ravagers in about half a minute. And then she gave the squad three instructions and left, as though she had done nothing more interesting than cross a street.”

”That soldier exaggerated.”

”That soldier was Zheng Wei, who has never exaggerated about anything, and who told me the same story three separate times because she needed somebody to confirm it had actually occurred.”

Isha’s light had been brightening throughout. Not with warmth.

”Casualties,” White said. Quietly. The mentor’s voice.

”One hundred and ninety-seven,” Jayde said. ”Out of sixteen hundred.”

The number sat down in the middle of the room and stayed there.

Green’s hands did not move on her cup. White’s arms folded. Yinxin’s golden eyes held very steady, in the specific way of a dragon carrying somebody else’s grief so that its owner would not have to hold all of it alone.

”I had the fabricator build caskets,” Jayde said. ”We brought every one of them home.”

Heiteng spoke for the first time all evening. He had not moved. The soup bowl was still in both hands.

”That has never been done,” he said. The deep-water register, unhurried, coming up from somewhere far below the room. ”Not in this world. Not in mine. Armies leave their dead where the ground takes them, and we call it necessity, and it is not.”

He drank.

”You changed a thing that had never been changed. Remember that you did that. On the days when the number is the only part you can remember.”

Tianxin’s fierce expression had gone somewhere else entirely. She was looking at Jayde with the wide, grave attention of a child who had just understood that a person she loved had been somewhere terrible and had come back carrying it.

”Were you scared?” she asked.

The room held its breath.

”Every day,” Jayde said.

Tianxin nodded once, as though that were exactly the answer she had needed — as though brave and scared were the same thing, and she had always suspected it, and had simply wanted somebody to confirm it out loud.

***

”Four,” Isha said.

”What?”

”’Manageable.’ Four times. ’Not ideal,’ twice. ’Some defenses,’ once, which I am counting double.” The light turned toward her. ”I mention this only so that you understand that nobody in this room was fooled at any point, and that we allowed it because you clearly needed to tell it that way.”

Jayde looked into her tea.

”Thank you,” she said.

”You are welcome. I am still going to read the actual casualty logs.”

”I know you are.”

***

”The Queen,” Isha said. ”You said the Queen directed them. How do you know that?”

”She told me.”

The stillness that followed was a different stillness from the war one. Sharper.

”She told you.”

”On the last night. She reached into my head and spoke.”

”The archives describe the Queen as a biological nexus. A coordination node. Not a mind.”

”The archives are incomplete.”

”The archives predate me.” A pause. ”You are telling me there has been a thinking thing under that mountain since before I existed.”

”A thinking thing that counts her own children into their graves to keep the seal whole. That sent the mantis into the dead zone so one of them could see something. That pulled her entire army back for ten days so we could bury ours.” Jayde’s voice was quiet. ”She is the loneliest thing I have ever met. And I know a fox who shut himself off in an empty room because the alternative was worse.”

The golden light flickered. Once. Isha weighing the comparison, finding it accurate, and not enjoying how accurate it was.

”I gave her my word I would not tell the Academy,” Jayde said. ”If they learn she thinks, they will go down there to win. And then the balance breaks and everything above the stone dies.”

”Then we do not tell them,” Isha said.

Simply. The first simple sentence he had produced all evening.

***

”That creature,” he said, after a while. ”The one in the dead zone. Extraordinary. If the archives are wrong about the Queen they may be wrong about caste plasticity generally, which has implications for—” The light paused. ”What became of it?”

”I brought it out with me.”

The room did not react, because most of the room already knew.

Isha’s light did not move at all.

”...I beg your pardon.”

”I brought it out. It’s in the yard.”

There was no transition. The golden presence simply stopped being in the main room, and the room dimmed by half, and the temperature dropped a degree.

”Did he just—” Eden started.

Jayde was already up and moving.

***

She caught him in the courtyard, which is to say she arrived several seconds after he did, out of breath, in time to watch a ninety-eight-thousand-year-old artifact spirit confront the practical realities of the situation.

The mantis had been asleep. It was not asleep now. It had risen onto its forelegs in the lamplight with Green’s compound dried pale along its flank, sensory pits aimed at the blazing gold presence that had appeared in its yard without warning, and its assessment of that presence had taken about a second and a half and concluded in not a threat, possibly food-adjacent, unclear.

Canirr and Amaya had withdrawn to the far wall. Giving the fox room.

Every diagnostic Isha possessed was pointed at the creature at once.

”It is enormous.”

”Yes.”

”The blade-arms would take a formation anchor off at the base.”

”They have.”

A long silence. The light cycled through several intensities that had no names.

”You are proposing to bring that,” Isha said, ”into my Pavilion.”

”Yes.”

”Into the Pavilion. Which I have maintained since before there were nations. Which contains the Queens’ Chamber, the seedling, and a garden that Green will genuinely fight you over.”

”Yes.”

”It is a Charling.”

”It’s my Charling.”

Isha said nothing at all for a good while.

She could feel him working. The framework being taken out, examined, found insufficient, and rebuilt around a shape it had never been designed to contain — ninety-eight thousand years of prohibitions written by Pyratheon himself, all of them entirely correct, all of them arriving at a courtyard in Obsidian City where the thing they had been written about was standing quietly with bandaged arms waiting to find out if it was in trouble.

”You rode this,” Isha said.

”Most of the year.”

”Into battle.”

”Against other Charlings. Which it was extremely good at.”

”On its back.”

”There isn’t really anywhere else to sit.”

And that was the sentence that did it.

The golden light made a sound Jayde had heard perhaps twice in the whole time she had known him.

Isha laughed.

Not loudly. The helpless, undignified laughter of a being whose capacity for outrage had been comprehensively exceeded, who had gone looking for somewhere to put the feeling and found only the absurdity, and had discovered inside the absurdity something that was very close to pride.

”There is nowhere else to sit,” he repeated. ”There is nowhere else to sit. She says this to me. In a courtyard.”

”Isha.”

”I need a moment.” The light was still shaking. ”I have been conscious for one day. One. And in that day I have learned that my contractor held a mountain for sixty days without cultivation, buried a hundred and ninety-seven soldiers she named herself, has been having private conversations with something older than my archives, and is now going to keep a Charling.”

He looked at the creature. The creature looked back with flat, unbothered interest.

”This is going to take some adjusting,” Isha said.

”Take as long as you need.”

”I intend to take a great deal. Every diagnostic I own runs on this animal before it goes anywhere near my wards. I will complain throughout. I will be documenting all of it for whoever keeps this place after me, so that they understand what was done to me here.”

”Understood.”

”And Jayde.”

”Yes?”

”If it sits on the bench, we are going to have a conversation.”

***

Behind them, the door had filled up with children.

Three small faces. Pendants glowing faintly. Eyes enormous.

”Can we touch it?” Tianxin whispered, which was the quietest anyone in the household had ever heard her be about anything.

The mantis turned its sensory pits toward the doorway and read three small signatures, and filed them where it filed everything that belonged to the woman who had chosen it.

Hers.

”Gently,” Jayde said.

They crossed the courtyard with the reverent, careful, wide-eyed caution of children approaching something holy.

Huaxin got there first. She put her hand flat on the warm compound-treated plate along the flank that Green had worked on the night before.

The mantis hummed. Low. Deep. The sound it made when the world was quiet and warm and its human was nearby.

Huaxin’s whole face opened.

”It’s warm,” she said.

”Yes,” Jayde said. ”It is.”

Behind her, in the doorway, Green had come out to watch, and Yinxin was standing at her shoulder, and White had followed them both and was standing in the lamplight with his arms folded and no expression whatsoever, which from White was approximately shouting.

Somewhere east of the city, moving fast and not stopping, a shadowbeast and a Lightning Panthera were closing the last of the distance.

They would be here by morning.
