Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 441: Chapter 436: Landing

Location:The Harrowing — Unknown Zone

Date/Time: 1 Frostforge, 9941 AZI

Realm:Vel’thari Containment (sealed dimension)

She hit ground.

Not stone. Not dirt. Something between — gritty, granular, the texture of crusite that had been ground to coarse powder and compacted by age. The impact drove the air out of her lungs. Her shoulder took the worst of it — the left one, the one that had been leading when the push sent her over the edge. Pain. Real. Immediate. The kind that meant bone was bruised but not broken, and that distinction mattered because the part of her mind that cataloged damage was still running even though the rest of her was—

She vomited.

Not a choice. Not a warning. Her body convulsed, and everything in her stomach came up — porridge, tea, bile, the physical cost of having the entire contents of a Solari archive hammered into her essence channels in three seconds. The emergency transfer had done exactly what Isha warned it would do. Her essence channels had been stretched far beyond their limit. Not broken — overloaded. Swollen with data they weren’t designed to carry, every pathway from her core to her extremities burning with the residual heat of information that had been forced through them at a bandwidth meant for emergencies, not for a seventeen-year-old body that had been falling through a portal when it hit.

She vomited again. Hands and knees on the gritty ground. The world was spinning — not the environment, her. Her inner ear, her spatial orientation, her ability to determine which direction was up. All of it scrambled by the portal transit and the info dump and the impact.

Her hand was still locked on Eden’s wrist.

That registered. Through the nausea, through the spinning, through the pain in her shoulder and the fire in her essence channels. Her right hand. Eden’s left wrist. The grip she’d locked when Isha screamed and hadn’t released through the fall, through the portal, through the impact. Her fingers were cramped. The tendons ached. She couldn’t open them.

”Jayde.”

Eden’s voice. Close. The specific, controlled tone of a woman assessing a situation she didn’t understand and defaulting to the thing she did understand: a patient on the ground in front of her.

”Jayde, I need you to breathe. You’re hyperventilating. Slow it down. In through the nose.”

The instructions arrived from far away. Jayde tried. The breathing hitched — another wave of nausea, the ground tilting, the gritty surface pressing into her palms. She retched. Nothing came up. Empty.

”Okay. Okay, that’s okay.” Eden’s free hand — the right one, the one Jayde wasn’t crushing — was on Jayde’s back. Not healing. Not channeling essence. Just a hand. Warm. Steady. The physical contact of a doctor grounding a patient through touch. ”You’re having some kind of essence reaction. Your channels are inflamed — I can feel the heat through your skin. What happened?”

Jayde couldn’t answer. The headache was a living thing — not pain exactly, more like pressure. The kind of pressure that came from a container being filled past capacity. Isha’s data was in her mind. All of it. The Vel’thari’s architecture. The zones. The predators. The safety bases she couldn’t access. The water sources. The exit formation. The warning — you cannot use your cultivation, not a thread, not a spark — and the awakening sequence, burned into her memory like a brand.

All of it competing for space in a mind that was also trying not to drown in its own nausea.

”Jayde. Stay with me. Can you hear me?”

She nodded. The motion made the headache worse. She stopped nodding.

Eden’s hand moved to her forehead. Cool against the heat. The doctor’s instinct — temperature check, pupil response, the basic diagnostic sequence that didn’t require essence and didn’t require understanding and worked in every realm and every dimension because bodies were bodies and damage was damage.

”Your temperature is elevated. Pupils reactive but sluggish. The vomiting is your body rejecting an overload — whatever hit your channels is still processing. You need to be still. Don’t try to stand.”

Jayde didn’t try to stand. Standing was a concept that belonged to a different version of reality — the one where the ground was solid, and the Pavilion hummed in her chest, and Isha was there.

Isha was not there.

The silence hit harder than the ground. She reached for the Pavilion — the automatic gesture, the thing she’d done ten thousand times in two years, the reaching inward toward the space behind her sternum where the formation network lived and the fox watched, and the bench was warm. She reached for it the way you reached for a wall in the dark.

Nothing.

Not the hum. Not the pulse. Not the ambient awareness of a living space maintaining itself around her. Not Isha’s voice, dry or urgent or gentle or any of the registers she’d cataloged over two years of being kept by a fox who’d deny it. Nothing. The space where the Pavilion lived was dark. Cold. Silent. The specific, absolute silence of a system that had been shut down, and the silence was worse than the nausea because the nausea was physical and the silence was the absence of something she hadn’t known she depended on until it was gone.

He shut down. He told me he would. He pulled the thread and went dark and I’m—

She retched again. Dry. Painful. Her body trying to expel something that wasn’t in her stomach.

”Jayde.” Eden’s voice. Firmer now. The doctor cutting through the panic with the authority of a woman who’d spent sixty years managing patients in crisis and knew that the voice was sometimes more important than the medicine. ”Look at me. Eyes on me. Right now.”

Jayde looked. Eden’s face. Close. Blue eyes steady. Dark brown hair escaping the practical knot — the transit had pulled it loose. A scrape on her jaw from the landing. Dirt on her cheek. But the eyes were clear. Focused. Afraid — yes, afraid, the fear was there in the tension around her mouth and the rapid pulse visible in her throat — but functional. Eden was afraid and functional, and that combination was the most useful thing in the world right now.

”Good,” Eden said. Seeing the eyes focus. Seeing the patient come back. ”You’re having an acute essence channel overload. I don’t know what caused it. The vomiting is a purge response — your body is trying to discharge excess. The headache is intracranial pressure from the overload. Both will pass. But you need to stay still and let it process. Can you do that?”

”Pushed,” Jayde said. The word came out cracked. Thin. ”We were pushed. Into the Harrowing.”

Eden went still. Not the stillness of fear — the stillness of information arriving. The doctor processing a diagnosis.

”The Harrowing,” she repeated. ”The sealed dimension. The one the students just entered.”

”Yes.”

”We don’t have bracelets.”

”No.”

”We weren’t prepared.”

”No.”

Eden looked up. Away from Jayde. At whatever was around them — the environment that Jayde hadn’t been able to assess yet because the ground and the nausea and the silence where Isha used to be had consumed everything.

Jayde watched Eden’s face change. The fear didn’t increase — it reorganized. The eyes moving across the landscape with the systematic scan of someone cataloging terrain, threat vectors, available resources. Not Eden the student. Not Eden the healer. The Doc. Years of Federation medical corps behind those eyes, assessing a hostile environment the way she’d assessed a hundred hostile environments in the life before this one.

”There’s a treeline forty meters north,” Eden said. Her voice had changed. Not warmer. Not colder. Precise. ”Rocky outcrop to the east — defensible. The ground we’re on is exposed. Open. Flat. If there’s anything in here that hunts, we’re visible.”

”Eden.”

”We need to move to cover.”

”Eden. Listen.” Jayde forced the words through the headache. Through the nausea that was receding but not gone. Through the silence in her chest. ”We can’t use cultivation. Either of us. Not a thread. The things in here — they feed on anomalous energy. Our essence signatures will draw them. Every formation, every healing technique, every thread of cultivation we channel is a signal. We have to survive on physical skills only. Body and mind. Nothing else.”

Eden stared at her. Her eyes processing.

”For how long?”

”However long we’re in here.”

A silence. The environment — whatever it was — pressed in around them. Sounds that Jayde couldn’t catalog yet. A quality of air that was different from the Academy’s mountain cold — thicker, mineral, carrying a taste that sat on the tongue like copper.

”No cultivation,” Eden said. Flat. Absorbing it. ”No healing techniques. No diagnostic essence-threads. No formation work. Nothing.”

”Nothing.”

”I’m a healer who can’t heal.”

”You’re a doctor, Doc. Doctors existed before cultivation. You told me that.”

Something shifted in Eden’s face. Small. The fear reorganizing again — not disappearing, never disappearing, but finding a shape it could work with. A shape that had a name from a previous life, from a career that had existed in a world where cultivation wasn’t real, and medicine was practiced with hands and knowledge and tools that didn’t require essence to function.

”I’m a doctor,” Eden repeated. Quietly. To herself.

”And I’m a soldier who can’t use formations. We work with what we have.”

Eden looked at her. Looked at the treeline. Looked at the rocky outcrop. Made a decision — the specific, visible moment where assessment became action and hesitation became movement.

”Can you stand?”

”Give me a minute.”

”You don’t get a minute, Commander. Open ground. Unknown hostiles. We move now.” Eden was already pulling Jayde’s pack toward her — checking what they had, the automatic triage of a field medic assessing resources before moving a patient. She stopped. Looked inside. Looked at Jayde. ”There are two bags in here that you weren’t carrying. And a ring.”

”Isha,” Jayde said. Through the headache. Through the nausea. The name was enough.

Eden didn’t ask. She shouldered both go-bags, slung Jayde’s pack over her other arm, pocketed the ring, and extended her free hand. ”Lean on me. Forty meters to the treeline. You can vomit on the way.”

Jayde took the hand. Stood. The world tilted. Steadied. The headache pounded. The silence in her chest where Isha lived was vast and cold and empty.

She had Eden. She had the supplies Isha sent. She had the data in her overdrawn channels, and the awakening sequence burned into her memory and sixty years of military experience in a body that couldn’t use any of the weapons it had been trained to channel.

Eden was already moving. Toward the treeline. Forty meters of open ground between the landing point and cover. The doctor had made the call — move first, assess later, survive the next five minutes before worrying about the next five hours.

Jayde followed. One foot. Then the other. The gritty ground beneath her boots. The copper taste in the air. Eden’s hand pulling her forward. The headache pounding. The silence in her chest where Isha lived — vast, cold, the emptiest thing she’d ever carried.

Forty meters. Thirty. Twenty. The treeline growing closer — dark trunks, canopy, shadow. Cover. The word meant something specific to the Commander: concealment, defensible position, a place to stop and breathe and assess. Cover was the first priority in any hostile insertion. Get off the open ground. Get into cover. Everything else came after.

Ten meters. Five. They crossed into the treeline. Eden pulled her behind the nearest trunk — wide, dark-barked, the kind of tree that offered solid concealment from multiple angles. Jayde leaned against it. Let the bark take her weight. Breathed.

”Okay,” Eden said. Already scanning. The Doc’s eyes moving through the shadows beneath the canopy, cataloging sight lines and approach vectors with the reflex of a woman who’d served in combat zones in a life that this world didn’t know about. ”We’re in cover. You need to rest. Five minutes. Then we—”

Jayde wasn’t listening.

The data was moving. Isha’s information dump — the shattered, overloaded mass of knowledge that had been hammering her essence channels since the portal — was sorting itself. Not through her effort. Through the Commander’s instinct. The part of her mind that had spent sixty years in the Federation military, the part that filed data automatically, unconsciously, the way a predator’s eyes tracked movement before the brain registered what was moving.

The data was matching.

The trees. The bark — dark, ridged, a pattern that didn’t match any species in the Academy’s botanical catalogs but matched a description in Isha’s data. The soil — the gritty, granular composition that she’d landed on, that she’d vomited on, that she’d crawled across. The copper taste in the air that had been sitting on her tongue since the portal spat them out.

She knew this zone.

Not from experience. From the data. From the Vel’thari archive that Isha had hammered into her skull. The archive that classified the sealed dimension into concentric rings — Outer, Mid, Deep, Abyss — each one more dangerous than the last, each one defined by specific environmental markers that the Solari had documented with the meticulous precision of beings who understood that knowledge was the difference between survival and extinction.

Dark-barked trees with ridged patterns. Granular soil with high mineral content. Copper trace in the atmospheric composition.

Mid Ring.

Not the Outer Ring, where the Harrowing’s entering students were deposited. Where the bracelet-linked safety bases were. Where the threats were manageable, and the fifty-year culling was designed to operate. Not the zone where 2,500 students and ten instructors were right now, beginning the structured trial that the Academy had been running for centuries.

The Mid Ring. One zone deeper. The zone where, according to Isha’s data, the things that lived here were faster and more numerous and hunted in organized patterns instead of random territorial aggression. The zone where students died — not the Outer Ring students who made mistakes, but the ones who went too deep, who pushed past the boundary markers, who didn’t know the difference between the zones or didn’t respect it.

The zone the Academy’s survival briefings described in two sentences: Do not cross the boundary markers. If you see dark-barked trees, you’ve gone too far.

The portal hadn’t deposited them in the safe zone. The portal had dumped them past the first boundary and into the hunting ground.

”Eden,” Jayde said. Quiet. The Commander’s voice — the one that carried information without inflection because the information was bad enough without adding panic. ”We’re not where the other students are.”

Eden looked at her. Her eyes reading Jayde’s face the way a doctor read a patient’s vital signs — not the words, the expression behind them.

”How bad?”

”We landed one zone too deep. The zone where people die.”

A silence. The canopy above them. The dark-barked trees around them. The copper air. The sounds that Jayde was only now beginning to catalog — not the sounds of wind or weather or the ambient noise of a natural environment. Something else. Something rhythmic. Something that came from the ground rather than the air, a vibration that sat just below the threshold of hearing and pulsed with the regularity of a heartbeat that wasn’t theirs.

”Can we move back?” Eden asked. ”Toward the other students?”

”I don’t know where the boundary is. The data has markers, but I need time to process it. Time and—” She pressed her palms against her temples. The headache. The data still sorting. The Commander’s mind trying to build an operational picture from fragments while the body that housed it was running a fever from essence-channel overload. ”I need time I don’t have and skills I can’t use.”

Eden was quiet for three seconds. The Doc’s processing speed — the specific, rapid assessment of a woman who’d been making triage decisions for sixty years and knew that the fastest path to survival was the one that skipped the stages between understanding the problem and acting on it.

”Then we survive here,” Eden said. ”In the zone where people die. Without cultivation. Without bracelets. Without anyone knowing we’re here.” She looked at Jayde. Not afraid — past afraid. In the place on the other side of afraid where the only options were function or collapse, and collapse wasn’t available. ”What do we have?”

Eden unslung the bags. Two go-bags — compact, heavy, packed with the meticulous care of a keeper who prepared for things that would never happen. She pulled the ring from her pocket. Held it up. The space ring that Isha had ported alongside the bags and whatever the fox had crammed into it during those final minutes.

”We have these,” Eden said. ”Two go-bags. Whatever’s in this ring. And each other.” She looked at Jayde. ”And whatever we remember from a world that doesn’t exist anymore.”

The pulsing in the ground continued. The dark-barked trees stood silent around them. The copper air tasted of metal and time and the quality of a place that had been sealed for longer than civilizations had names.

The Pavilion was dark. Isha was gone. The Harrowing was real. They were in the wrong zone with no cultivation and no backup and no way home except through.

Eden looked at the ring. Looked at Jayde. Looked at the dark trees.

”Okay, Commander,” she said. Quiet. Steady. The Doc, in the worst place she’d ever been, choosing to function. ”Let’s see what the fox packed us.”
