Immortal Ascension Through Marriage: Investing in My Wife Get Returns

The official invitation from the town magistrate hung proudly on the wall of the main hall, its golden seal catching the morning light. One thousand taels of silver. Absolute imperial protection.

For the Azure Swallow School, this was not merely a martial arts tournament; it was the definitive end to their desperate, clawing survival. With that kind of money, Lin Yuan could buy the dojo outright, repair the rotting roof, and ensure that his son, Lin Fan, would never again have to shiver through a winter fever or look at an empty rice bin. With imperial protection, thugs like the Black Tiger Gang would never dare step foot on their street again.

Because the stakes were nothing short of life and death, Lin Yuan transformed into a ruthless, unyielding taskmaster.

The spring air in the courtyard was thick, and filled with the sharp thwack! of wooden practice swords striking each other. Lin Yuan pushed his three disciples to the absolute brink of human endurance. He drilled them from the moment the sun crested the horizon until the evening shadows completely swallowed the courtyard.

”Again!” Lin Yuan barked, his voice hoarse, leaning heavily against his staff to take the weight off his still-healing shoulder. ”Your footwork is sloppy, Zhao! If you drag your heel like that in the arena, a real opponent will sweep your leg and shatter your kneecap! Do it again!”

Zhao gritted his teeth, and launched himself back into the forms.

While the grueling training consumed the courtyard, a quiet, lingering shadow watched from the edges.

Lin Fan was now ten years old. He was a quiet, observant boy, possessing his mother’s delicate features and gentle disposition. But physically, he was slight and fragile, lacking the dense bone structure and aggressive instinct required for the martial path.

As Fan sat on the wooden porch, dutifully mending a torn training tunic with a needle and thread, he watched Zhao execute a breathtaking, spinning high kick. Lin Yuan offered a rare, brief nod of approval.

A heavy, suffocating knot of inadequacy tightened in Lin Fan’s chest. He looked down at his own thin hands. He remembered the blood pouring from his father’s shoulder after the fight with the gang. He remembered the desperate look in his father’s eyes when the cupboards were bare. His father was a warrior, a protector who bled for their survival. And what was he? A fragile burden who could only sweep the floors and boil water.

In the cultivation world, a master’s worth was directly tied to the strength of their legacy. An immortal patriarch demanded supreme talent from his heirs, casting aside the weak to ensure the sect’s survival. Subconsciously, Lin Yuan’s intense focus on his three talented students projected that same suffocating expectation onto his young son, even though he never intended it.

The sun finally set, and the exhausted disciples bowed deeply before dragging their bruised bodies home. Lin Yuan ate a quick, silent dinner, his mind entirely consumed by tournament brackets and combat strategies, before retiring to his room to rest his aching shoulder.

Late that night, when the moon hung high and full over Qingshui Town, Lin Yuan was pulled from a fitful sleep by a strange sound echoing from the courtyard.

Thud. Thwack. Thud.

It was faint, but unmistakable. Someone was hitting the wooden training dummy.

Lin Yuan silently rose from his bed, slipping into the dark hallway. He stepped out onto the porch, the cool night air biting at his skin, and looked toward the center of the yard.

It was Lin Fan.

The ten-year-old boy was standing before the heavy, iron-wood training dummy. He was barefoot, wearing only thin sleep-pants. He was throwing punches and palm strikes against the unyielding wood with frantic energy. His form was completely wrong—his wrists were bent, his footing was uneven, and his shoulders were tense.

Thud!

Lin Fan struck the wood again, letting out a sharp gasp of pain. He pulled his fist back, and even in the pale moonlight, Lin Yuan could see the dark, glistening streaks of blood painting the boy’s knuckles. The skin had been completely rubbed raw, the wood splintering against his fragile flesh.

Yet, instead of stopping, the boy let out a frustrated, heartbroken sob and raised his bleeding fists to strike the dummy again.

”Fan’er,” Lin Yuan spoke, his voice soft but carrying across the quiet courtyard.

Lin Fan froze, his narrow shoulders violently flinching. He turned around, hiding his bleeding hands behind his back, his face pale with terror and shame. Tears were streaming freely down his cheeks.

”Father... I... I was just practicing,” the boy stammered, his voice cracking.

Lin Yuan walked slowly down the wooden steps. He didn’t look at the dummy; he looked directly into his son’s terrified, grieving eyes. He reached out, gently taking the boy’s small arms and pulling them forward, exposing the bruised, bloody knuckles.

A profound, agonizing realization struck Lin Yuan’s mortal heart. He had been so entirely focused on saving the school and preparing for the tournament that he had completely blinded himself to the silent suffering of his own child.

”Why are you doing this, Fan’er?” Lin Yuan asked, his voice thick with emotion. ”You know you do not have the bones for this style. You are only destroying your hands.”

”Because I have to!” Lin Fan suddenly cried out, the dam of his insecurities breaking completely. ”Zhao is so strong! The other students are strong! They are going to win the tournament and make you proud! But I can’t do anything! I can’t protect the school! I can’t inherit your legacy! I’m completely useless, Father!”

The words hit Lin Yuan hard.

In the real world, the pursuit of a legacy was one of the driving force of the Great Dao. Cultivators spent thousands of years grooming successors to carry their name into eternity. It was a toxic, crushing weight that treated individuals as mere vessels for a greater ambition.

But this was not the Great Dao. This was a muddy courtyard in a mortal town, and the weeping boy before him was not a vessel. He was his son.

Lin Yuan knelt in the dirt, ignoring the dampness seeping into his robes. He pulled a clean linen cloth from his pocket and gently began to wrap Lin Fan’s bruised and bleeding hands.

”Fan’er, look at me,” Lin Yuan commanded softly.

The boy sniffled, forcing his tear-filled eyes up to meet his father’s gaze.

”A martial arts school is just wood and stone. A legacy is just a story told by old men,” Lin Yuan said, his voice carrying a truth that resonated deep within his mortal heart. ”I do not care if you never throw a single punch in your entire life. I do not care if you become a scholar, a merchant, or a farmer. Your worth is not measured by how hard you can strike a piece of wood.”

Lin Yuan finished tying the bandage, his hands enveloping his son’s small, trembling fingers.

”I am a martial arts master to Zhao and the others,” Lin Yuan whispered, pulling the boy into a fierce, protective embrace. ”But to you, I am only a father. I do not need a martial successor, Fan’er. I just need my son. Your happiness is the only legacy I will ever care about.”

Lin Fan buried his face in Lin Yuan’s shoulder, finally letting go of the suffocating weight he had been carrying for months, sobbing freely into his father’s robes until exhaustion pulled him into sleep.

Lin Yuan gently carried his son back to bed, feeling his Mortal Heart expand with each passing moment.

He had successfully separated his own ambitions from his child’s path. His son did not need to become another version of himself, nor did he need to inherit his ambitions or burdens.

In that moment, Lin Yuan saw the beauty and fragility of an individual mortal life, and the importance of allowing someone to choose their own path.

Two weeks later, the day of the Provincial Martial Arts Tournament finally arrived.

The tournament was held once every three years, and martial arts schools across the province spent years preparing for this single event. For many of them, it was more than just a competition. It was a chance to gain fame, attract talented disciples, and secure valuable opportunities for the future.

For some schools, this tournament could even determine whether they would continue to thrive or slowly fade into obscurity.

The grand arena in the center of the provincial capital was a spectacle. Massive red and gold banners fluttered in the wind. Thousands of spectators filled the wooden bleachers, their roars deafening as the regional magistrate took his seat in the elevated viewing box.

Lin Yuan stood at the edge of the central fighting ring, his three students standing nervously behind him.

Directly across the ring, standing under the dark banners of the Iron Palm School, was Lei Meng. The giant brute caught Lin Yuan’s eye and offered a cruel, mocking sneer. But Lei Meng was not fighting today.

Stepping forward from the shadows of the Iron Palm canopy was a young man, no older than eighteen. He was completely devoid of the bulky, excessive muscle typical of the Iron Palm style. Instead, he was lean, pale, and possessed a pair of dead, hollow eyes that sent a sudden, chilling spike of genuine alarm down Lin Yuan’s spine.

”The first match!” the referee bellowed, raising a colored flag. ”Azure Swallow School versus Iron Palm School!”

Lin Yuan sent forward his eldest, most dependable student, Li

Li stepped onto the raised wooden platform, bowing respectfully to the pale prodigy. The prodigy did not bow back. He simply stared at Li’s kneecaps.

”Begin!” the referee shouted, dropping the flag.

Li moved forward, initiating a standard, cautious probing strike.

What happened next was too fast for the spectators to truly comprehend, but Lin Yuan and other martial artists caught every horrifying detail. The Iron Palm prodigy didn’t just counter the strike. He slipped inside Li’s guard with the lethal intent of a venomous snake.

There was no martial honor. There was no sparring.

The prodigy’s palm struck Li’s extended elbow at a devastating angle. A sickening CRACK echoed through the arena as Li’s arm was instantly shattered, the bone splintering violently under the skin.

As Li screamed in agony, falling backward, the prodigy didn’t stop. He stepped forward flawlessly, driving a merciless, downward heel kick directly into the side of Li’s knee. The joint completely inverted with a wet crunch.

Blood sprayed across the pristine wooden platform. Li collapsed, brutally crippled in less than three seconds of combat.
