The Scientific Alchemist

Section I: The Silent Docking Bay

The hydraulic hiss of the Aether-Wing’s atmospheric seal echoed through the small cabin, sounding less like a homecoming and more like a tomb locking shut. Fifty-two days of drifting through the frozen silent sea of space had brought them back to Zenith Station, but the massive orbital ring hanging over the blue curve of Earth offered no sanctuary.

Docking Bay 4 was completely shrouded in a thick, sulfurous haze of emergency fuel vents and cold iron dust. Instead of the bustling guild cartographers, refueling crews, and vibrant trade barges that usually packed the central slipways, the bay was deathly empty. The main overhead luminaries had been cut, replaced by the ominous, revolving amber glare of military warning beacons.

Suspended along the high iron catwalks surrounding their berth were six heavy Vanguard Dreadnoughts, armored skiffs equipped with twin-barreled auric cannons, their targeting reticles glowing with a hungry, violet heat as they locked onto the Aether-Wing’s forward quartz viewport.

”Elias...” Jacob growled, his massive hands gripping the secondary throttle levers until his knuckles turned as white as bone. ”Those aren’t repair tenders or dock master skiffs. That’s the High Council’s heavy assault fleet. Every single cannon is pre-charged to five thousand ergs.”

Marcus scrambled up to the optical sights, his brass-rimmed spectacles slipping down the sweat-slick bridge of his nose. He pressed his face to the glass, his fingers flying across the mica ledger strapped to his thigh as he tried to read the serial numbers stamped across the armored skiffs. ”Look at the double-headed iron raven crest on their hulls! That isn’t the Zenith Cartel Guild or the Transit Authority. It’s the Apex Triumvirate, the military coalition from the deep iron mines of the southern hemisphere!”

Lira stood at the center of the control console, her claws digging deep into the soft copper trim. Her thick coat bristled, static electricity popping in tiny blue sparks along her spine. Her forehead crystal, which had radiated a soft, serene amber hue throughout the quiet homeward drift, suddenly flickered, darkening into a sharp, erratic crimson pulse.

”They didn’t come to inspect our logs, Marcus,” Elias said softly. He stood in the navigation well, his eyes unblinking as he looked past the dreadnoughts toward the heavy iron blast doors sealing off the main concourse. His fingers rested lightly against the inner pocket of his wool tunic, where the fused auric-titanium slide rule lay cool against his ribs. ”They came to execute a seizure.”

Section II: The Triumvirate Mandate

Before the ship’s landing legs could fully settle onto the magnetic cradle, the outer airlock hatch shrieked as heavy iron crowbars forced the pneumatic seals. A sharp blast of pressurized, ozone-tainted air swept into the cabin, carrying with it the cold smell of scorched oil and industrial lime.

Eight Enforcers stormed through the portal, clad in interlocking plates of dark-titanium armor that absorbed the ambient amber light. They moved with military precision, their heavy magnetic boots striking the deckplates in deafening, synchronized stomps. In their gauntleted hands, they held short-barrel shock-pikes, the tips vibrating with lethal, high-frequency electrical arcs.

Behind the vanguard stepped High Prefect Vane. He was a tall, gaunt man whose pale skin looked as though it had never felt natural sunlight. A single monocle forged from polished blue quartz sat over his left eye, anchored by a delicate silver chain that pinned to his crisp, double-breasted coat of iron-threaded wool.

”Elias Vance,” Vane said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, echoing off the cabin’s curved bulkheads like stone dragging across stone. ”On direct authority of the Apex Triumvirate, you, your crew, and this vessel are under immediate military arrest for high treason against the planetary cartels.”

Marcus slammed his mica ledger shut, stepping between Elias and the advancing line of Enforcers. ”Treason? Are you out of your mind, Vane? We just returned from the Main Asteroid Belt! We successfully stabilized the Third Array and averted a total extra-solar kinetic collapse that would have shattered the outer rim!”

Vane’s eyes narrowed behind his quartz monocle as he stepped forward, his heavy leather gloves resting on the silver pommel of his ceremonial saber. ”You cut off eighty-two percent of the global power grid!” he snapped, his composure breaking into a sudden, venomous spit. ”By sealing the Third Array’s core, you locked the outer siphon lines. The ground cartels in New London, Cairo, and Hong Kong have lost their primary power draw. Cities are operating on rationing schedules. The heavy steel foundries are cold. The Triumvirate has classified your actions as an unprovoked declaration of economic warfare.”

”The Third Array was never built to feed your endless industrial appetites, Vane,” Elias said coolly, stepping up beside Marcus. His posture was completely relaxed, his golden eyes reflecting the harsh glare of the Enforcers’ shock-pikes. ”It was constructed by Master Julian as a protective shield to deflect deep-space kinetic anomalies. If we had left the siphon lines open, the entire planetary field would have been torn apart by the Roaming Magnetic Sink.”

”The Triumvirate cares nothing for historical ghost stories or dead cartographers,” Vane sneered, gesturing with his hand. ”Seize the vessel. Strip the navigation desk of all charts. Secure the crystal creature... and take the slide rule.”

Section III: The Corrupted Frequency

Two Enforcers stepped forward, raising their shock-pikes to shoulder height, the blue arcs crackling as they aimed for Elias’s chest.

SKRRRRR-BANG!

Lira didn’t wait for the guards to close the distance. She vaulted off the navigation console and landed on the optical tripod, her small body arched like a drawn bow. She opened her jaws and emitted a high-frequency acoustic screech that bypassed human hearing entirely, striking the cabin as a sheer wave of physical force.

The glass lenses on Marcus’s rangefinder shattered instantly. The quartz monocle over Vane’s eye imploded into a shower of harmless dust. The eight Enforcers stumbled backward, clutching their helmets as their shock-pikes short-circuited in bursts of yellow sparks.

Her forehead crystal blazed into a blinding, jagged crimson light. But the energy radiating from her wasn’t coming from the Aether-Wing’s internal battery, nor was it drawing from the Third Array millions of leagues away in the void.

Deep within the structural core of Zenith Station, three miles down in the ancient crystalline mainframe that anchored the orbital ring, a hidden First Era receiver began to sing back.

THUUUUUUUM.

It was a sound that didn’t travel through the air; it vibrated directly through the structural iron skeleton of the station. The floorboards of Bay 4 buckled upward with a sickening metallic groan. The six Vanguard Dreadnoughts suspended from the roof began to sway wildly on their mooring chains like pendulums in a storm. The revolving amber emergency lights flickered, died, and were instantly replaced by a deep, pulse-like blood-red illumination that bled from the very walls.

Vane hit his knees, clutching his ears as his coat was dusted with powdered quartz. ”What... what did you do?” he screamed, his voice cracking with panic as he looked up at the ceiling plates, which were beginning to rain rivets onto the bay floor. ”The station’s core reactor... it’s surging past maximum thermal threshold!”

”That isn’t a power surge, Vane,” Elias said, his voice deadly calm as he felt the unnatural, erratic cadence of the vibration through his boots. He reached into his vest and pulled out the fused auric-titanium slide rule. The permanent emerald light locked inside its scale was fighting violently against the crimson pulse bleeding through the deck. ”When we fired the kinetic lance to deflect the Roaming Magnetic Sink... a parasite frequency hitched a ride on our return signal. It didn’t destroy the station. It infected it.”

Section IV: The Breach of the Parasites

The iron floor in the center of Docking Bay 4 split wide open with a sound like a mountain shattering in half.

A violent eruption of dark kinetic static surged upward from the ruptured maintenance shafts beneath the deck. It wasn’t smoke or fire, it was an expanding swarm of black, crystalline tendrils, thick as tree trunks, creeping across the metal bulkheads with terrifying speed. Where these tendrils touched the station’s copper wiring and iron plating, they devoured the raw electrical current, leaving behind brittle, grey dust.

”Enforcers! Fall back to the blast doors! Fire at will!” Vane shrieked, scrambling backward on his hands and knees as a tendril lashed out and dissolved the titanium armor of his lead sergeant in three seconds flat.

The remaining Enforcers panicked, unleashing a chaotic volley from their heavy sidearms. Bright bolts of auric energy tore through the bay, striking the ceiling struts and sending a thirty-ton Vanguard Dreadnought crashing down into the deck floor in a catastrophic explosion of diesel and twisted metal.

”Jacob! We’re pinned!” Marcus yelled over the deafening roar of collapsing catwalks and roaring energy bolts. He grabbed a pneumatic rivet gun from the workbench, leaned out the airlock door, and began firing four-inch steel spikes into the advancing line of black tendrils to buy them inches of space.

”The main docking clamps are locked from the station’s exterior terminal!” Jacob shouted back from the engine pit, his muscles bulging as he threw his shoulder against the manual mechanical override lever. ”The Triumvirate engaged the primary magnetic deadbolts! I can’t bleed enough pressure to release us without going out onto the gantry!”

”You won’t survive two seconds on that gantry!” Elias shouted over the chaos. He stepped to the open airlock hatch, his slide rule held tightly in his right hand, its translucent cursor set to an extreme parabolic angle. ”Lira, with me!”

Lira leaped onto Elias’s shoulder, her claws pinning into his wool coat. Her crystal locked onto the tip of the slide rule, focusing her crimson energy into a single, needle-thin beam of pure white counter-harmonic light.

”Marcus, hold the hatch! Jacob, prepare full reverse throttle on the main turbines!” Elias commanded.

Elias leaned out into the screaming abyss of Bay 4. Below them, the floor was entirely gone, replaced by a churning vortex of black crystalline tendrils and blood-red energy. Ahead, two six-inch solid auric iron clamps were clamped around the Aether-Wing’s starboard hull, anchoring them to the dying station.

Elias slid the cursor across the titanium scale with mathematical precision. ”Phase angle seven point two! Disruption vector locked!”

ZAAAAAAAAP!

A concentrated blade of harmonic light shot from the slide rule, striking the first magnetic clamp. The six-inch solid iron bolt didn’t melt, its atomic bond shattered instantly, turning the massive lock into a cloud of metallic sand that blew away into the dark void.

”First clamp dissolved!” Marcus cheered, firing three rapid rivets into a tendril creeping up the landing gear.

”Second clamp target locked!” Elias shouted, his hair flying in the pressure wind as the station’s hull integrity failed. He adjusted the slide rule scale by two micro-degrees and fired again.

CRACK-THUMP!

The second clamp disintegrated.

”We’re free!” Jacob screamed, slamming the primary kinetic throttle straight through the safety gate.

The Aether-Wing’s twin magnesium-auric turbines roared with apocalyptic fury. The ship shot backward out of Docking Bay 4, clearing the collapsing blast doors by a fraction of an inch just as the entire gantry collapsed into the abyssal, infected heart of Zenith Station.

Outside, in the cold shadow of Earth, Zenith Station was no longer a shining beacon of human cartography. Its three-mile iron ring was wrapped in a terrifying web of glowing crimson light and crawling black crystal.

Inside the cockpit, Elias stood breathless, his golden eyes reflecting the nightmare unfolding across the station.

”Course, Elias?” Jacob panted, his hands trembling on the flight controls. ”Where do we go? Earth’s cartels want us hanged, and the orbital station is dying!”

Elias looked down at his titanium slide rule. The emerald light inside was pulsing in rhythmic harmony with Lira’s crystal, pointing away from both Earth and Zenith Station, down toward the ancient, uncharted First Era ruins buried deep beneath the Antarctic ice cap.

”We go down,” Elias said. ”To where this infection was born.”
