...

With a soft, mechanical click, a hidden, highly secure compartment slid open from the base of the throne. It was a secret safe built by Liu Ye, known only to Lie Fan himself. He carefully placed the two black sealed scrolls into the velvet lined compartment and pushed it shut, locking it seamlessly back into place. ’It must become an oral tradition, bound to the deathbed,’ Lie Fan finalized in his mind.

He would create a strict, unbreakable imperial law within the royal family. On his deathbed, when his final breaths were approaching, he would clear the room of all physicians, guards, and concubines. He would summon only his chosen heir.

In those final, private moments, he would whisper the mechanical secret of the throne and the existence of the scrolls, binding the Crown Prince with a sacred oath to only read them upon his ascension, and to repeat the exact same deathbed ritual when his own time came to pass the crown.

It was the only way. A whispered chain of absolute power, stretching down through the millennia, keeping the Black Dragon always one step ahead of history.

With his ultimate legacy firmly secured, Lie Fan let out a long, grounding exhale. The apocalyptic visions of the future receded, replaced by the immediate, demanding reality of his present empire. He rolled up his sleeves, sat back down at his desk, and seamlessly resumed his work, diving back into the endless mountains of documents, taxation reports, and military logistics that demanded the attention of the most powerful man in the world.

While the Emperor secured the future in the quiet, sunlit sanctuary of his study, a vastly different scene of profound, culture shocking revelation was unfolding on the outskirts of the capital.

The air within the sprawling, heavily fortified walls of the Imperial Workshop was thick, hot, and suffocatingly loud. It was a chaotic, deafening symphony of industrial progress. Massive drop hammers slammed into glowing iron ingots, shaking the dirt floors. Furnaces roared with white hot intensity, and the sharp, metallic tang of sulfur and burning coal hung heavy in the yellow dust.

Walking through this mechanized hellscape, flanked by heavily armored imperial halberdiers, was Lady Himiko.

The former Shaman Queen of Yamatai was accompanied by the brilliant strategists Sima Yi and Guo Jia. Following closely behind them was a terrified Funan scholar who had been rapidly trained as a translator, sweating profusely in the intense heat of the workshop.

Himiko wore a simple, yet elegant dark blue silk robe, her raven hair tied back in a practical braid. As she was guided deeper into the industrial complex, her beautiful, analytical eyes were wide with a profound, existential shock.

For her entire life, she had been a living god. She had ruled the Wa archipelago by cultivating an aura of mystical, untouchable divinity. She had convinced her people that her rudimentary knowledge of chemistry, the extraction of sulfur for primitive flas powders, the forging of bronze, the use of toxic roots, were divine miracles granted only to her by the spirits of the earth.

But looking around this sprawling complex, her entire worldview was being violently, ruthlessly shattered.

She saw massive, organized rows of towering blast furnaces producing steel of a quality she couldn’t even fathom. She saw complex, gear driven waterwheels powering massive saws that cut through timber like paper. And in the distance, partially obscured by scaffolding, she saw a colossal, iron clad carriage hissing with trapped steam, attended by hundreds of soot stained mechanics.

She realized, with a crushing, humiliating certainty, that her ”magic” was nothing but the ignorant parlor tricks of an isolated islander. The Hengyuan Dynasty did not worship the spirits of the earth, they had enslaved them, binding fire and water in cages of iron to do their bidding.

The sheer, unfathomable scale of the mainland’s scientific advancement made her feel incredibly small, yet simultaneously, it ignited a burning, insatiable curiosity deep within her analytical mind.

Sima Yi walked beside her, his hands clasped behind his back, observing her silent, awe-struck reactions with a cold, calculated amusement.

”The world is much larger than your island, Lady Himiko,” Sima Yi remarked, pausing as the translator frantically converted his words. ”Here, we do not rely on prayers to shape the earth. We rely on mathematics, metallurgy, and the Emperor’s will.”

Himiko did not respond immediately. She watched a massive iron gear lock into place, turning a heavy conveyor belt. ”It is terrifying,” she finally answered softly, her voice carrying a mix of dread and deep fascination. ”But it is beautiful. You have stolen the power of the gods.”

”Gods are a luxury for those who cannot build,” Guo Jia chuckled, taking a sip from a small porcelain flask of wine he carried in his sleeve, completely unfazed by the roaring machinery around them. ”And we are a nation of builders.”

Their procession finally halted near a highly specialized, heavily guarded sector of the workshop dedicated to volatile chemistry and alchemy. The air here smelled sharply of acid and raw sulfur.

Working over a massive, complex array of glass distillation tubes and brass pressure scales were the veteran engineers Liu Ye and Huang Chengyan. Both men were covered head to toe in black soot, their hands stained with chemicals.

When they saw the high command approaching, accompanied by the beautiful, exotic foreign woman, Liu Ye wiped his brow with a greasy rag, leaving a dark streak across his forehead. He and Huang Chengyan stepped away from their benches, offering brief, respectful bows to the two strategists.

”Master Sima Yi, Master Guo Jia,” Liu Ye greeted, his voice raspy from the smoke. His sharp eyes immediately darted to Himiko, narrowing with deep, protective suspicion. He recognized her from the military briefings. ”To what do we owe the honor of this visit? And why, by all the heavens, have you brought the captive Queen of Yamatai into the most classified sector of the imperial foundries?”

Huang Chengyan crossed his arms, equally skeptical. ”This is not a viewing gallery for defeated royals. We are handling highly volatile black powder components here. A single misplaced spark, and this entire wing goes up in flames.”

Sima Yi smiled, a thin, patronizing expression that always managed to irritate the pragmatic engineers.

”Calm yourselves, gentlemen. We are not here to sightsee,” Sima Yi stated smoothly. ”We are here on the direct, absolute orders of His Majesty the Emperor.”

Sima Yi gestured toward Himiko. ”The Emperor, in his infinite wisdom, has recognized that while this woman’s political ambitions were a nuisance, her mind is a valuable resource. She maintained her rule through a surprisingly advanced, albeit primitive, understanding of sulfur extraction, alloy tempering, and chemical toxins. His Majesty has decreed that such talent will not rot in a prison cell.”

Guo Jia took another sip of wine, leaning casually against a wooden pillar. ”Exactly. She is no longer a Queen, Liu Ye. She is your newest alchemist and metallurgical consultant.”

Liu Ye’s jaw dropped slightly in sheer disbelief, his eyes darting between the delicate, silk clad woman and the brutal machinery of his lab. ”You expect me to work alongside a foreign captive? She doesn’t even speak our language! How is she supposed to assist with the thermodynamic extraction of nitrate compounds?”

”That is what the translator is for,” Sima Yi replied, gesturing to the sweating Funan scholar, who bowed nervously. ”He will be assigned to her at all hours. He will translate your technical manuals, your orders, and her insights. Furthermore, while she is working here, she will be meticulously learning the Hengyuan language. In time, the translator will no longer be necessary.”

Huang Chengyan stepped forward, his veteran eyes evaluating Himiko with a harsh, uncompromising glare. ”And what is to stop her from intentionally sabotaging our formulas? What is to stop her from mixing the wrong compounds and blowing us all to ash out of spite?”

Before Sima Yi could answer, Himiko, who had been listening to the rapid exchange through the whispered translations of the Funan scholar, stepped forward. She did not cower before the soot stained engineers. She met Huang Chengyan’s glare with the unwavering, intense pride of a scholar.

She spoke rapidly in her native tongue, waiting for the translator to convey her words.

”Tell them,” Himiko ordered, her voice steady and commanding, ”that I am a scientist, not a suicide assassin. I have seen the magnificent, terrifying things you build here. I have spent my entire life working with raw earth, fire, and stone in isolation. I wish to learn the secrets of your thunder. I wish to understand the mathematics behind your iron beasts. I will not sabotage my only chance to touch the true edge of human knowledge. Give me the raw sulfur from my home islands, give me your glass tubes, and I will show you how to purify it faster than your current methods.”

The translator finished, wiping his brow.

Liu Ye and Huang Chengyan looked at each other, their engineering curiosity mildly piqued by her bold claim regarding the sulfur purification.

”She has spirit, I’ll give her that,” Liu Ye muttered, picking up a heavy brass caliper. He turned back to Sima Yi. ”Fine. If it is the Emperor’s will, she works. But she does not touch the primary black powder reserves until I have personally verified her extraction methods. And she is watched. Every second of every day.”

”Do not worry, Master Liu,” Sima Yi assured him, a cold, ruthless edge entering his voice as he looked at Himiko. ”She is under heavy watch. The Imperial Guards stationed at the doors have strict orders. If she attempts to manipulate your staff, if she attempts to steal a single blueprint, or if she deviates from your assigned tasks, she will be executed on the spot without trial. Her life is entirely dependent on her scientific utility.”

Himiko did not flinch at the threat. She simply bowed her head respectfully toward Liu Ye and Huang Chengyan, accepting her new reality. She was a captive bird, but the cage was made of the most fascinating knowledge the world had ever seen. She was ready to work.

The transition from divine sovereign to imperial captive was a profound psychological shock for Himiko, but the sheer, overwhelming intellectual stimulation of the Imperial Workshop provided a desperate, consuming anchor for her restless mind.

Within days of her arrival, Himiko was thrust into the grueling, highly disciplined routine of the alchemy and metallurgy sectors. Initially, Liu Ye and Huang Chengyan, still harboring a deep, protective suspicion of the foreign queen, assigned her what they considered menial, low level tasks.

She was tasked with grinding raw sulfur stones into fine powder, cataloging vast shipments of mainland saltpeter, and monitoring the rudimentary distillation of basic acids. It was work meant for apprentices, carefully selected to keep her away from the highly volatile black powder reserves or the sensitive theoretical blueprints.

However, Himiko did not complain. She did not throw royal tantrums or demand better treatment. She approached every single task, no matter how menial, with a terrifying level of seriousness and a flawless concentration that quickly caught the attention of the veteran engineers.

She stood for hours over the grinding stones, her fine silk robes quickly becoming stained with yellow dust and gray ash. She meticulously measured compounds using the brass scales, her movements precise and deliberate. Through her Funan translator, a nervous young scholar named Kael, she constantly asked penetrating, highly technical questions about the mainland’s methods for measuring heat and pressure.

It wasn’t just her work ethic that surprised them, it was the sheer, untapped trove of traditional knowledge she possessed. One afternoon, while observing an apprentice struggling to temper a batch of experimental bronze for a valve casing, Himiko stepped forward.

Speaking rapidly to Kael, she instructed the apprentice to stop using pure charcoal and instead mix in a specific ratio of crushed, dried kelp and a rare volcanic ash she had identified in their stores.

”She says the sea salt and the ash will bind to the impurities in the molten tin,” Kael translated nervously, sweating under Liu Ye’s skeptical gaze. ”It changes the breath of the metal as it cools, making it resistant to shattering in the cold.”

Liu Ye frowned, crossing his arms. ”Let her try it. But if it ruins the batch, she cleans the crucible.”

Himiko personally oversaw the mixing and the pouring. When the bronze finally cooled and was struck with a heavy testing hammer, it did not shatter or warp; it rang with a clear, perfect resonance, proving to be incredibly resilient.

Liu Ye and Huang Chengyan exchanged a loaded glance. It was traditional, almost instinctual knowledge, born of isolated experimentation on a volcanic island rather than rigid mainland mathematics, but it was undeniably effective. There were concoctions, natural binders, and temperature control techniques she knew that they had never even heard of. Slowly, the initial hostility began to thaw into a cautious, mutual scientific respect.

A few weeks into her integration, the dynamic of the workshop shifted again.

Zhuge Liang and Huang Yue Ying, having just completed a grueling diagnostic run on the newly built steam carriage prototype, wandered into the alchemy sector seeking a specific solvent to clean a fouled piston ring.

Liu Ye immediately flagged them down, a rare smile breaking through the soot on his face. ”Master Zhuge Liang, Lady Yue Ying. Come. I want to introduce you to our newest, and arguably most frustratingly competent, apprentice.”

Zhuge Liang and Yue Ying walked over to the distillation benches. Himiko looked up from a bubbling glass flask, her eyes widening slightly as she took in the legendary Sleeping Dragon and the brilliant woman beside him. She had heard the whispered rumors of the steam carriage and the minds that had birthed it.

”This is Himiko,” Liu Ye introduced, gesturing vaguely. ”Former Queen, current headache, and surprisingly adept at alloy tempering.”

Yue Ying stepped forward, her eyes bright with genuine fascination. The idea of having a female foreign ruler, one who had supposedly controlled her people through primitive chemistry, working right here in the Imperial Workshop was incredibly intriguing to her.

”It is an honor to meet a fellow scholar,” Yue Ying said, bowing respectfully, ignoring the fact that Himiko was technically a prisoner.

Kael rapidly translated the greeting. Himiko bowed in return, immediately sensing a kindred spirit in the soot stained, brilliant woman standing before her.

From that day forward, Yue Ying chose to work closely with Himiko whenever she could spare the time from the steam engine project. Despite the language barrier and the constant presence of the nervous translator, the two women formed a unique, highly productive bond. They communicated through the universal language of mathematics, chemical reactions, and physical demonstrations.

During one of their long, complex conversations regarding heat retention and fuel efficiency, a spark ignited in Yue Ying’s brilliant mind.

Himiko was explaining, through Kael, how the ancient shamans of Yamatai would build specific, dome like clay kilns that forced the heat from a small fire to circulate violently, maximizing the internal temperature without wasting fuel.

”The fire must chase its own tail,” Himiko explained, drawing a spiral in the ash on the workbench. ”If the heat escapes upward too quickly, it is wasted breath. You must force the heat to wrap around the stone before it leaves.”

Yue Ying stared at the spiral in the ash, her mind racing at a million miles an hour. She looked toward the massive doors of the workshop where the steam carriage sat.

”The boiler,” Yue Ying whispered, her eyes widening. She grabbed a piece of charcoal and rapidly began sketching over Himiko’s drawing. ”Zhuge Liang and I built the boiler as a simple, open cylinder. The coal burns, the water boils above it, and the excess heat escapes straight out the smokestack. It’s inefficient.”

Yue Ying looked at Himiko, her face glowing with realization. ”If we redesign the internal combustion chamber... if we run a series of coiled iron pipes through the water tank itself, forcing the exhaust heat to circulate through the water before it escapes...”

”You trap the breath of the fire,” Himiko finished, understanding the concept instantly. ”You boil the water twice as fast with half the coal.”

Yue Ying dropped the charcoal and grabbed Himiko by the shoulders, completely forgetting imperial decorum. ”You are brilliant! A multi-tubular boiler! I must find Zhuge Liang immediately!”

As Yue Ying sprinted out of the alchemy lab, leaving a bewildered Kael and an amused Himiko behind, the former Queen of Yamatai felt a strange, profound sense of satisfaction. She was no longer a god commanding fear; she was a scholar shaping the future. And for the first time in her life, it felt real.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, the sweltering, humid delta of Samatata was undergoing a radical, invisible transformation.

Just a couple of months into the Hengyuan Dynasty’s subtle, shadowy occupation, the kingdom had profoundly changed. On the surface, the green and gold banners of King Samudrasena still flew over the capital of Karmanta. But beneath the facade of native rule, the iron will of Lie Fan was rapidly reshaping the society into a weaponized, highly efficient buffer state. ℯ𝓵.

The first, and perhaps most shocking, mandate enforced by Huang Zhong and Xun You was not military, but medical. The Hengyuan commanders were deeply paranoid about the tropical diseases that thrived in the delta’s suffocating humidity.

By strict, uncompromising decree, hygiene became the absolute top priority. The chaotic, muddy streets of the cities and the sprawling rural villages were forcefully ordered to be cleaned. Deep, stone lined aqueducts and sewage channels were hastily constructed by massive teams of local laborers, directed by Hengyuan engineers operating in the shadows. The practice of dumping refuse directly into the vital drinking rivers was violently outlawed, punishable by immediate public flogging.

Within weeks, the overwhelming stench of raw sewage that had plagued Karmanta for centuries began to dissipate. The rampant spread of dysentery and cholera plummeted, reducing the chance of diseases decimating the hidden Hengyuan garrisons and the newly formed native puppet armies.

This medical revolution was immediately followed by a massive, ruthless restructuring of the Samatata bureaucracy.

Xun You, sitting in his hidden command center deep within the palace cellars, found the native system of governance to be an archaic, disorganized nightmare. It was a bloated system of wealthy nobles holding hereditary positions, relying on verbal agreements and incredibly sloppy ledgers.

Xun You tore it down.

Working through King Samudrasena’s terrified decrees, Xun You implemented the rigid, efficient Hengyuan administrative model. He introduced standardized imperial weights and measures, double entry bookkeeping for all tax collections, and a strict, merit based system for lower level magistrates. To ensure optimal government work, thousands of native clerks were forced to learn the Hengyuan abacus under the threat of losing their livelihoods.
